Inspired by the beamdrop of Chris Burden, infopunt is conceived as a flat concrete roof that is dropped on a forest of I-beams of different lengths. The I-beams at times penetrate the concrete and at times remain untouched, which generates a field of tension between the functional and the esthetical. The concrete volume can be used as
a shelter, a bench or an info point, but also allows a new experience of the environment by means of a ‘promenade architectural’.

Beach cabins (Dutch: strandcabine) are a poetic, but also a space consuming form of leisure infrastructure. Therefore the task was to design a structure that offers a less dispersed alternative to the individual cabins. Strandcabien became a thirty meter long box that floats above the beach and is reminiscent of an early flying machine. Much attention was
paid to the design of the wooden trusses. The rhythm of the vertical beams that of the cabins and interferes at the same time with that of the Royal Galleries. The diagonal beams disrupt the rhythms inside the box and filter the light in a playful way.

On a plot of 15 by 15 meter full of trees, each student was asked to design a small type of holiday home that can be built in series to form a fictional resort. My goal was to give inhabitants a feeling of living outside on the inside. To achieve this, I designed a compact glass house intersected by two large terraces. These ‘floating’ terraces contain holes,
so trees can grow around and in the house. The terraces are placed 90 cm above the ground and continue into the interior, becoming worktops and shelves, and so blurring the division between outside and inside. A floating fence surrounds the plot, ensuring that the house is not entirely disconnected and creating the feeling of living in your own forest.

The assignment was to create a family home with a practice space. I saw this as an opportunity to design both my own home and future architectural office. D.a.n.d.i, stands for dirty architecture ‘n’ design institute. I began with a simple box and divided it into four equal cubes. The first contains the office, the second a patio, and the third and fourth the
house itself. Fully glazed, the box also reflects the way I live and work, and serves as a sort of ‘business card’. But it also respects the privacy of the other inhabitants and neighbours by using different sorts of glass, screens and even the image of Le Corbusier.

How to redesign an out-dated hockey hall housed in a former riding school with limited historical value? Students were given the choice: reconversion or demolition. I was charmed by the massive sidewalls in warm masonry and convinced of the historical value of the neoclassical façade, so I went for the first. I started off by removing everything
but the three outer walls to create a ruin-like space. This felt like the ideal playground for hockey. The sidewalls were over-dimensioned, so I installed the utilities on the roof in the form of a ‘cloud of steal’. A skylight provides a visual connection between the hall and ‘the cloud’.

With a team of four students we proposed a green masterplan for the redevelopment of a 1,7 ha brownfield site into a residential neighbourhood. Because the site is significantly lower than its surroundings, it is partly submerged and covered in water plants. This ecosystem gave us the inspiration for ‘the creek’: a large man-made wetland that crosses the site
and forms a ‘green passage’ for pedestrians and cyclists. The creek also provides natural drainage and ensures grey-water purification for the entire neighbourhood. The new housing blocks are situated on both sides of the creek, but instead of continuing they ‘alternate’, so each block forms a visual end for an open space of the other side.

The blocks have a typical section: tree duplexes are stacked on top of each other, the lowest have their accesses at street level and the other two are accessed by two galleries and share a ‘night-level’. +1.90
In phase two of project Scheutveld, the team was split up into two duos that each had to further develop an area of the masterplan. My partner and I had a fascination for brutalism (think Chandigargh or the work of Bob Bardi and de Rocha). We decided to find out if it was possible to adapt brutalism to the requirements of a passive house, in

Maggie’s centres are the fulfilling of the last wish of a broadminded woman called Maggie, who wanted to find a peaceful place after being diagnosed with cancer. With this in mind, I opted for a safe haven, without concealing the building’s function. I designed an ‘open bunker’. That’s perhaps why, during final deliberation, someone described the design as ‘a
bit cold’ and ‘not really cosy’. But that was actually the purpose. The building is designed to let people focus on the outside. The openings demonstrate the beauty of the surroundings: the horizon, a sunset, rabbits playing in the grass,… And inside, one can also discover the warm sand-tones in the concrete or the the changing patterns in the wooden panels.

Again: teamwork. With the aid of two other architecture students and a student in structural engineering, we transformed an old mill along the canal Brussels-Charleroi into a congress centre and offices. We regarded the two existing building as being actors, each fighting for their spot by the canal. The first one gives the one in the back ‘a kick’ with a leg

The building in front features a ‘crack’ that lets in more light and creates an interesting entrance hall.

A.r.g.o. stands for ‘Architecten Rust-, Groeps- en Ontspanningsruimte’. It’s a getaway for architecture students and consists of two parts ‘the boat’ and ‘the sauna’. The boat contains a reading area, a bar/worktable and a kitchen. The sauna is set aside for meetings. ‘Do call me Huib!’ is a side-project aimed at the decoration
of leather cushions with Warhol-like portraits of the architectural heroes of the students.

I viewed my thesis an opportunity to further develop the concept of care-housing (co-housing + care = carehousing). I began with case studies in the residences of four wheelchair-users and implemented my findings in the further design process. The backbone of the project is a big L-shaped building containing 112 housing units, offices,
artist studios, commercial premises and a communal area. This building acts as a noise barrier that protects to protect a green inner area with 107 residences. This area is rounded off by a communal swimming pool featuring a cafeteria and a dance-, fitness- and judo-room.

I want to focus on the group house in my thesis, because it provides a specific answer to the research question ‘what should care-housing look like and how can architecture be helpful in assisting a person in a wheelchair?’. The group house consists of seven housing units that are stacked in an interesting way, encompassing four different housing-

I was twelve years old, when I was leafing trough the ‘Phaidon Atlas of Contemporary World Architecture’ and my eye fell on a shocking box in rusted steel. It was warm and tempting. The pictures weren’t big, but the impact was enormous. I believe nothing has had more influence on my architectural views and direction than the discovery and
copying of maison Bordeaux. I can talk for hours on the subject, but I’ll be brief: a mas-ter-piece!

A wink to Duchamp. Wasn’t that practical after all. Next time a wider base.
OW_02_tsak
I remember Tsak started off as something Donald Judd could have made. Then things started to slip. Why? Because all books topple after in the end.
OW_03_caféexistenz
During the existenzweek, architecture students take over an old building and transform it into a creative platform for all sorts of arts: street art, dance, sculpting, light art and of course a large dose of architecture. I was responsible for the design of the café. I was inspired by Café Aubette. In Aubette the centre is a dance floor, here it is the floating
table Bangk. On both sides arise the seating areas. On the left a salon comfy granny-corner complete with sofa’s and carpets, and on the right holiday-chairs overlooking the skyline of Leuven. A DIY-piano finishes the cabaret-like feeling. The bar is made of changing lockers and topped with plates of eucalyptus-multiplex.
OW_04_zwaailamp
Since buying twenty ProuvĂŠ-lamps was slightly over budget, I designed a kind of tribute to the famous wall lamp with some planks, cable and some big black lampshades we found in the empty building across the street.
OW_05_badkamer01
The bathroom is situated in a house that provides a nice example of the garden city movement. She wanted a bath, he preferred a rain shower. And I wanted to incorporate the garden city movement in, and wanted to give by giving them the impression of bathing in a forest. To achieve this, I placed a freestanding bath in the room and gave the
ceiling a print of foliage. I put a wall made out of wooden planks in front of the sloping wall, creating a secondary space with a toilet and a rain shower.

Also the false ceiling has to be removed and the windows should be restored to their full size. To end, I introduced a more soft and subtle palette of materials.

The social housing company ‘’Vooruitzien’’ requested 48 apartments on a site that was 1/3 dry, 1/3 covered with puddles and 1/3 mangrove-like. After making massstudies we quickly came to the conclusion that the entire program could be realized using only the dry part. So we triplicated the program and proposed a new masterplan. In
this masterplan, we divided the site into three zones based on the prevailing soil conditions. Then, we introduced a different typology for each zone: the urban villa, the circular commune and the residential tower block. For ecomonical reasons we designed one appartement-type that can ‘build up’ all the different typologies at once.

How to go from A to B? In this case ‘A’ is Leuven and ‘B’ is Kessel-Lo, a peripheral municipality of Leuven. At the moment the two are like Romeo and Juliet, close but tragically separated by a powerful institution, in this case Leuven’s central station. To remedy this, we created the ideal bicycle-spiral: perfect bicycle-slopes and optimal
bicycle-turning-circles. Let the cycling begin!

a connection to the island and is ’s shaped like a bowl so it takes up as little space of the river as possible, but can at the same time hold the pool and a water purification plant! As a solution for the flooding-issues, we proposed a stepped embankment, which can be opened during extreme weather to allow the waterpark to act as an additional expansion zone for the river.
