Introduction

Boat shet in Giudecca Island, Venice, Italy

The boat shet is an interesting building typology, where their purpose is to store boats protecting from the elements. It is a single structure with a single function. It can be judged as a structure with a simple expression stemming from its simple function. From an architectural perspective, judging it through the sole photograph, they have characteristics of rectangular, slender and hollow. These are qualities that the structure expresses at a glance. The reasoning behind the characteristics is to understand the expression that the boat shet brings. Rectangular, slender and hollow qualities are the shet first expression that it gives to the viewer. These are the essential qualities needed to have a basic understanding of the structure

Analysis

Exploded axonometry of the boat shet

The boat shet is an interesting building typology, where their purpose is to store boats protecting from the elements. It is a single structure with a single function. It can be judged as a The groundwork of the structure is a solid and monolithic concrete base. This base is meant to give stability to the whole structure while at the same time protecting the wood from the water of the lagoon. The framework is composed of a series of wood beams that create a light structure that blends with the context. Over this structure, tiles and wood boards protect the wood structure from the elements. This contrast between concrete and wood is what inspired the design of the artifact.

Asingment

Artifact Model

The artifact is meant to express the contrast between concrete and wood. This contrast is not only reflected on the materiality but also in the stability of the structure. The base and the top of the artifact are meant to be stable and heavy while the body is assembled using branches. This creates a strong relationship between stable and dynamic. Furthermore, the base and the top of the artifact are treated as monolithic elements while the branches in the body are left in their natural state, this creates a new contrast between precision and chaos.

Process

1.- Making the molds

2.- Pouring the gypsum

3.- De - casting the mold

Final Result

The end goal is achieved, the contrast between the two materials is not only physical but also structural. The body of the artifact struggles to maintain the weight of the top. The branches bend under the forces but the base maintains its solid-state. This effect makes an emphasis on the different characteristics of the materials. The union between dynamic and stable, between heavy and light is achieved.

Reflections

In conclusion, it was interesting to see that you can create objects in response to structures from photographs and extracting its characteristics to be used in the same manner. Even though the qualities are similar, the outcome results in completely different expressions, due to the discrepancy in the material. It was quite interesting to see the contrast and the differences the two made. Concerning the given literature, it made me realize the contrast it makes from the use of different materials and their texture, qualities, and characteristics. How the materials were used to their strengths to express something that only the material could. Materials are the medium we use to create and the medium determines how we create.
