All dogs are susceptible to a variety of diseases, ailments, and other health problems. As a responsible owner, it’s important to learn what the signs are for these health issues as well as how to treat and prevent them.

Although Dachshunds are at risk for certain health problems, they won’t all suffer from serious diseases. The majority of the breed are healthy dogs. The best dog owners are well-informed and prepared to care for their dog to the best of their ability.

Field trials have been a passion of mine since the first time in the field with FC American Pie Hidden Cedars MSP, Amy, in Hempstead, TX. I had NO clue what I was supposed to do and was a terrible handler and I am still learning. My dogs’ skills make me look good!!! Fortunately for me, Amy knew exactly what to do and got a First out of 27 our very first time in the field on 12-13-03. She took another first on 12-14-03 and finished on 2-07-04 in Farmerville, LA with a third. Needless to say, I was hooked.

I usually write about Dachshund trials above and below ground, but a recent experience has prompted me to consider something that many field and den trialers encounter Toxicodendron radicans or Rhus radicans, better known as poison ivy. And it too is active above and below ground.

No, I wasn’t weeding poison ivy on Christmas Eve, but my dogs did have a nice run that day in some very overgrown areas rank with poison ivy. Forty-eight hours after contact is standard reaction time for me, but others may respond in a few hours or even three days afterward.

Heart Screening for Dogs Cardiopet ®pro-BNP Canine by IDEXX Article submitted by Anne Schmidt The Cardiopet proBNP is a simple blood test that was adapted from human medicine and is used to predict the risk of developing congestive heart failure in dogs and cats. This test measures the presence of a particular type of hormone (NTproBNP), which is released into the blood when the heart muscle is stretched or experiences stress. A few reasons the heart muscle could be stressed include: • Stretching of the muscle due to muscular weakness as in Dilated Cardiomyopathy • Thickening of the muscle as in Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy • Stretching of the muscle due to abnormal blood flow as experienced in Mitral Valve Regurgitation, (a leaky heart valve, or DMVD).

Degenerative mitral valve disease (DMVD) is very common in older, small breed dogs including Dachshunds.

Small breed dogs have a genetic tendency to develop pathological changes to their mitral valves. We don’t know exactly why or how it happens, but the valve leaflets that are normally

thin and fit together precisely become irregularly thickened. This thickening prevent the leaflets from closing as they should, and the valve begins to leak, which causes turbulent blood

flow around the valve. The sound of this turbulence is called a heart murmur. In the case of DMVD, the murmur occurs between the normal “lub” and “dub” heart sounds (i.e., a systolic murmur) and can be heard most clearly around a particular point on the left side of the dog’s chest.

Regular annual veterinary checkups may not reveal early heart changes and stress to the heart muscle. Cardiac screenings with Cardiopet ®pro-BNP may help show earlier changes so additional diagnostics can be done. If additional testing shows a heart condition, early treatment is very beneficial before the heart damage is significant, or the heart has gone into failure.

NO ONE is suggesting this test as a substitute for a good clinical workup including a careful history, physical examination, thoracic radiographs, EKG (for arrhythmia evaluation specifically), echocardiography, or specialist consultation.

While the application of the test will undoubtedly evolve, this test should Image from Vet Street, currently consider this as Dr. Marty Becker an ancillary test, i.e. in addition to the aforementioned, or as a screening test, i.e. to screen for heart disease that isn't coming up on history or physical exam.

It’s Not Just Grain-Free: An Update on Diet-Associated Dilated Cardiomyopathy

by Lisa M. Freeman, DVM, PhD, DACVN November 28, 2018 vetnutrition.tufts.edu/2018/11/dcm-update I’m pleased that people are interested in this important issue and trying to learn about it.

But I’ve also found a tremendous amount of confusion and misinformation in the past 5 months including people who doubt that this is a real issue, some who still haven’t heard about it, and people who mistakenly think it’s just grain-free diets or that it’s only related to taurine.

As a result of the continued confusion, some of my cardiologist colleagues and I wrote an article which was published in the latest issue of the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association. This article provides a summary of our current understanding of diet associated dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), how to recognize it, and a recommended protocol for veterinarians to follow when they see dogs with DCM. To be sure this information reaches as wide an audience as possible and to clear up confusion, I thought I’d provide some updates to address the most common misconceptions I’m hearing: 1. It’s not just grain-free. This does not appear to be just an issue with grain-free diets. I am calling the suspected diets, “BEG” diets – boutique companies, exotic ingredients, or grain-free diets. The apparent link between BEG diets and DCM may be due to ingredients used to replace grains in grain-free diets, such as lentils or chickpeas, but 1/5 also may be due to other common ingredients commonly found in BEG diets, such as exotic meats, vegetables, and fruits. In addition, not all pet food manufacturers have the same level of nutritional expertise and quality control, and this variability could introduce potential issues with some products.

2. Most dogs being diagnosed with DCM do not have low taurine levels. Some owners continue to feed a BEG diet but supplement taurine thinking that this will reduce their risk for heart disease. In our hospital, we currently measure taurine in all dogs with DCM, but more than 90% of our patients with DCM in which taurine has been measured have normal levels (and the majority are eating BEG diets). Yet some of these dogs with DCM and normal taurine levels improve when their diets are changed. This suggests that there’s something else playing a role in most cases – either a deficiency of a different nutrient or even a

toxicity that may be associated with BEG diets.

Giving taurine is unlikely to prevent DCM unless your dog has taurine deficiency. And given the lack of quality control for dietary supplements, you can introduce new risks to your dog if you give a supplement without evidence that she needs it.

3. Raw diets and homemade diets are not safe alternatives. Out of concern, some owners are switching from BEG diets to a raw or homecooked diet. However, we have diagnosed DCM in dogs eating these diets too. And raw and home-cooked diets increase your dog’s risk for many other health problems. So, forego the raw or homecooked diets and stick with a commercial pet food made by a well-established manufacturer that contains common ingredients, including grains. If your dog requires a home-prepared diet for a medical condition or you feel strongly about feeding one, I strongly recommend you consult with a BoardCertified Veterinary Nutritionist (acvn.org). However, because home-cooked diets are not tested for safety and nutritional adequacy like good quality commercial diets, deficiencies could still develop.

Current thoughts on DCM Currently, it appears that there may be three separate groups of dogs with DCM (although this may change as we learn more). I am listing them in the approximate frequency that we are currently seeing them in our hospital: 1. Diet-associated DCM with normal taurine levels. While this form of the disease was first identified in dogs of breeds not predisposed to DCM that are eating BEG diets, it appears to also occur in dogs of typical DCM breeds that are eating a BEG diet.

2. Primary DCM in predisposed breeds that is unrelated to diet. This is the traditional, genetically-related DCM in typical breeds, such as the Doberman Pinscher, Boxer, Irish Wolfhound, and Great Dane.

3. Diet-associated DCM with taurine deficiency: This is the least common form we are seeing in our hospital. This appears to happen both in breeds predisposed to DCM and breeds that are not predisposed to DCM.

Common questions We still have a great deal to learn about dietassociated DCM. However, I’m providing answers to some common questions I’ve been getting based on what is currently known: 1. What’s causing diet-associated DCM in dogs?

For the vast majority of dogs, we do not yet know what is causing this disease. There are definitely some dogs with DCM that have low taurine levels, many of which will improve with taurine supplementation and change of diet. For dogs that have normal taurine levels, however, other nutritional deficiencies may be present. continued next page...

Diet-Associated Dilated Cardiomyopathy continued from page 7 Some nutritional deficiencies can affect the heart’s normal function, so an insufficient amount of these nutrients (or reduced bioavailability) in the diet could cause heart disease. Diet-associated DCM could also be due to an ingredient in the food that is toxic to the heart. The FDA and many researchers are actively studying this issue so that it can be solved as quickly as possible.

2. My dog was diagnosed with DCM. What should I do? Ask your veterinarian to measure taurine levels and give heart medications as directed by your veterinarian. If your dog is eating a BEG diet or other unconventional diet (including vegetarian, vegan, or homeprepared diets), I recommend following the steps outlined in my previous post, including switching to a non-BEG diet. Three updates to my previous post are: Taurine supplements: Consumer Lab is expected to release a report on independent quality control testing of taurine supplements in late 2018. Given the lack of quality control for dietary supplements (human and pet), having these results will be very useful to find good quality products for dogs that require taurine supplementation. Your veterinarian or veterinary cardiologist can help you determine an optimal dose for your dog.

Other dogs in the household: We are now recommending that other dogs in the household of dogs with DCM that are eating the same BEG diet be screened by their veterinarian since their

hearts could also be affected (even if they are showing no symptoms).

Outcome: Not all dogs with DCM will improve and improvements in the echocardiogram, when they do occur, can take a long time (often more than 6 months).

3. If my dog is eating a BEG diet but has no symptoms, should I test for DCM or switch to a different diet? It’s unlikely that most dogs eating a BEG diet will develop DCM. However, given the fact that we don’t yet understand why BEG diets are affecting some dogs and because DCM is a life-threatening disease, I recommend you reconsider your dog’s diet until we know more.

Contrary to popular belief, there are no health benefits of grain-free or exotic ingredient diets except in the rare case of food allergy. If your dog is a part of your family and you want to feed him the very best, be sure to base this important decision on more objective factors than marketing and the ingredient list.

Be sure to watch for early signs of heart disease – weakness, slowing down, less able to exercise, shortness of breath, coughing, or fainting. If you notice any of these, get your dog checked out by your veterinarian who will listen for a heart murmur or abnormal heart rhythm (although not all dogs with DCM have any changes that can be heard with a stethoscope). Your veterinarian (or a veterinary cardiologist) may do additional tests, such as x-rays, blood tests, electrocardiogram, and ultrasound of the heart (echocardiogram – the test of choice to diagnose DCM). In the last year there has been a significant increase in the number of dilute coloured dogs being sold in the UK. The majority are being bred by French Bulldog and English Bulldog extreme-colour breeders, many using dogs imported from the U.S.A. or Eastern Europe, presumably as the market for both has passed the peak and they see an opportunity to make significant money from ‘rare’ or ‘coloured’ dachshunds.

The gene that causes the dilute colours can also cause an issue in some dogs called colour dilution alopecia (CDA), where the hair shaft is thin and weak, meaning it can drop out of the follicle and cause baldness. Because the

testing is really up to you. Some owners have measured plasma and whole blood taurine levels or scheduled an echocardiogram to check their dog’s heart size and function. However, given the cost of an echocardiogram, other owners have elected to have their veterinarian do a blood test called NT-proBNP, which goes up when the heart is enlarged. While a normal value doesn’t guarantee your dog has no heart disease, a high level suggests your dog’s heart should be evaluated further.

4. Has diet-associated DCM been seen in cats?

The association between BEG diets and heart disease has only been reported in dogs so far.

However, that doesn’t mean cats are immune. If your cat is diagnosed with DCM and is eating a BEG, vegetarian, vegan, or home-prepared diet, I recommend following the same protocol as described for dogs with DCM. Lastly, if your dog has been eating a BEG diet and has been diagnosed with DCM, please don’t feel guilty. I’ve talked to owners who feel terrible because they wanted to provide the finest care for their dog by feeding them the best diet possible. They often spent a lot of money buying an expensive boutique diet and now that same diet may be associated with their dog’s heart disease. Trying to decide what is really the best food is confusing and difficult because of the many different products available, nutrition fads, and compelling marketing. My hope is that the one bright side of this serious situation is that it will shine a light on the complexities of making safe and nutritious pet food and the importance of nutritional expertise and quality control, rather than just what is new and trendy. !

The breeders are applying similar techniques to those used to promote the Bulldogs. Both pups and studs are being advertised regularly via Pets4Homes and other sites, on Facebook (though the majority of Dachshund-specific groups in the UK have banned any promotion of dilutes), as well as on Instagram. The adverts often refer to isabellas as ‘lilacs’, or as being DNA tested as carrying blue or lilac, or tricolour (i.e. similar language to bulldog ads) and suggest that dogs are of exceptionally high quality (with nothing to back that statement up).

Those that are KC registered are frequently advertised without referencing ‘Colour Not Recognised’ status, at a high price (anything from £2000 - £8000!).

The breeders frequently refute that there is actually any such condition as Colour Dilution Alopecia, claiming it is an outdated and discredited notion, and that dogs of standard colours are equally affected by alopecia. They argue that without recent research to demonstrate the link between dilution and alopecia, there is no reason to stop breeding dilutes, and argue that as the KC permits registration, then that is evidence that there isn’t an issue! continued on page 14...

Kennel Club current position: In June 2017, the Kennel Club issued a press release confirming concern about fashionable and ‘rare’ colours, and made it a condition that breeders must now manually enter the colour of the puppy if the CNR option was selected. The aim is to improve the quality of data on CNR registration across all breeds, and they state that they will work with Breed Clubs to increase knowledge in the area ‘once registrations have been collected for a number of months’. The release states that “special focus will be paid to four breeds that are known to have seen surges in unrecognised colours - Labradors, Pugs, French Bulldogs and Bulldogs” (Is it a coincidence that it was around the same time that Frenchie breeders started moving into Dachshunds?).

Full KC statement here Veterinary Research on CDA: There are a number of papers on CDA in general and a few on Dachshunds in particular, but the majority date back 10 years or more.

However, the majority of articles online about CDA reference Dachshunds in the top 10 breeds most at risk (with very few referencing bulldogs).

This might be behind the colour breeders’ argument that it is an outdated concept. However, Professor Tosso Leeb of the Institute of Genetics in Switzerland is currently undertaking research into CDA in various breeds, with the intention of identifying genetic risk factors.

Helen Geeson, resident geneticist and colour expert on the Dachshund Breed Council’s Health and Welfare sub-committee explains: "The hypothesis is that the gene occurs in more than one version and some breeds have the problem gene whereas others do not. If this hypothesis is correct (and the research is incredibly slow and not progressing rapidly), what we do know for certain is that Dachshunds do have the version that causes CDA. At the moment, there is no DNA test for CDA (There is a DNA test for the dilution gene, but it cannot differentiate between the version that causes CDA and the version that doesn’t). Therefore, at the moment there is no 100% safe way to breed dilute colour Dachshunds

and the people who are breeding them who say they don’t have CDA in their lines cannot possibly know that for certain, as they haven’t been breeding Dachshunds long enough to prove it. They are relying on mainly American breeders and some in Eastern Europe, and I am not convinced I would be trusting them all".

“Despite trying to educate some of these dilute breeders, they do not want to work with the Dachshund Breed Council and try to make out that it is the DBC who have the issue and do not understand the science. I guess when you want to sell puppies for a high price you need to try to convince buyers that you know more than the authorities in the breed!”

CDA Facebook Survey In Spring 2018, Gill Key, one of the Pet Advisers sitting on the DBC’s Health and Welfare sub-committee, ran a simple 10-question SurveyMonkey survey on various Facebook Groups asking dilute dog owners about CDA in their dogs. 53% of respondents were from USA, reflecting the higher number of dilute dogs bred there. 36% of respondents were from the UK, the rest being from Canada, Australia and South Africa. In total, 43% of dogs were reported as showing CDA. However, given the small number of dilute dogs currently in the UK, it is somewhat surprising how many respondents were from the UK and on further analysis, it is interesting to note that overall, 66% of respondents had either bred from their dog already or may breed from their dog. In the UK, this is even higher: 74% have either bred or may bred from their dogs and, of these, there was only one report of CDA. This, combined with the fact that many of the reports of breeding dogs without CDA were consecutive in the survey, suggests that there may have been a deliberate effort to skew the results. If all dogs that have been bred from or may be bred from are excluded, 83% respondents recorded CDA in their dogs (52% if dogs that might be bred from are included). Clearly this might be biased the other way.

In summary, though the survey was limited in numbers and flawed due to the potential skew by breeders with a vested interest, there appears to be a significant number of dilute dogs affected by CDA. !

IMPROVING OUTCOMES FOR DOGS WITH ACUTE SPINAL CORD INJURIES Dr. Natasha Olby, North Carolina State University, D16CA-081 RESULTS: Rehabilitation for dogs following disc herniation is safe, but overall postoperative care may be the key to improving outcomes for canine patients.

Disc herniation is a common cause of paralysis in dogs. Recommendations for the management of dogs following surgery for disc herniation vary from strict rest to intensive rehabilitation, but benefits from these different approaches are unclear.

Morris Animal Foundation-funded researchers at North Carolina State University compared two rehabilitation protocols to see if one outperformed the other in improving clinical outcomes in dogs following disc herniation surgery. The first was a postoperative rehabilitation protocol designed to enhance the strength and coordination in dogs with naturally occurring disc herniation. The second was a more conservative, supportive protocol using passive range of motion exercises, limited sling walking and confinement.

The research team found intensive rehabilitation soon after spinal surgery was safe and well tolerated but did not significantly improve outcomes compared to dogs in basic, in-hospital rehabilitation.

Also, almost all the dogs in the trial lost muscle mass rapidly after injury, regardless of their postoperative treatment. However, muscle mass returned in most dogs over time. This finding suggests that rehabilitation specifically aimed to help maintain muscle mass could benefit dogs recovering from disc herniation surgery.

Another interesting finding was that study dogs that stayed in the hospital for two weeks post-surgery, regardless of which rehabilitation protocol they received, showed improved function over dogs that were directly discharged from the hospital and recuperated at home. This finding suggests a more prolonged hospitalization after surgery can have a significant positive impact on recovery in these patients.

This study provided new information on postoperative rehabilitation and care in dogs with acute spinal cord injury following surgery.

Findings were recently published in the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, April 2018 in a paper entitled “A randomized, blinded, prospective clinical trial of postoperative rehabilitation in dogs after surgical decompression of acute thoracolumbar intervertebral disc herniation.” !

AKC BREEDER OF THE YEAR FOR HOUND FIELD EVENTS Gloria LaTour Hidden Cedars Dachshunds

I

t is all about the dogs for this totally unexpected award of AKC Breeder of the Year 2018 Sport Hound Field events. Thank you AKC for recognizing DACHSHUNDS in this huge Sport Hound Field Events group.

What an incredible journey, that has enriched my life with wonderful talented dogs and the people that bring out the best in those dogs. You need both to be successful. Most dachshunds are born with natural abilities to use their nose. The honing of those skills they are born with is all about exposure to the elements that challenge them and help them learn. It is so much fun to watch them learning and putting it all together. When they reach the end of that slip lead it is ALL about them and their abilities.

with FC American Pie Hidden Cedars MSP, Amy, in Hempstead, TX. I had NO clue what I was supposed to do and was a terrible handler and I am still learning. My dogs’ skills make me look good!!! Fortunately for me, Amy knew exactly what to do and got a First out of 27 our very first time in the field on 12-13-03. She took another first on 12-14-03 and finished on 2-07-04 in Farmerville, LA with a third. Needless to say, I was hooked.

It was so awesome to watch her do what came naturally.

There have been many dogs since then that have fired my enthusiasm for the sport and many people that have shared in this adventure. My sweet boy Jolt, ABS DC Hidden Cedars Sudden Impact MS, was a ton of fun to finish with an absolute. He won my first bronze large plaque by going Absolute over 87 participants. What a great time that was from the Open class and working his way up from being called back in fourth. The rabbit practically running over us right before he went down on the line certainly sparked his resolve. He wore me out, but I was all smiles.

Hidden Cedars has 46 Field Champions to date, with others close to finishing. Cindi and Virginia Scotts CH Hidden Cedars Lines Of Distinction MSB, Merit needs ¾ of a point to be a DUAL… and as we all know Duals Rule!!! Hidden Cedars has 18 Dual Champions, to date, of which I am most proud. Lori Isaacson has shared in this adventure, from the beginning, with her Hidden Cedars field Champion dachshunds both bred by her and myself.

The Buckeye Invitational held in Ohio invites the top 20 field dogs in the US to participate in a double elimination field trial.

ABS FC Hidden Cedars Jango Bling was invited to the Invitational and at 9 years of age won 3rd in 2015. He came back at 10 years of age in 2016 to take 2nd. He has had an incredible career in the field thanks to Lori Isaacsons’ love of the sport and her love of him.

Ziggy Stardust of Hidden Cedars MS, at 2 years old and bred by Lori and I, won the Buckeye Invitational in 2018. Lori, is not only an incredible field trialer but

an accomplished Field trial judge and awesome friend, of which, I am always thankful.

Thank you to her and ALL with Hidden Cedars dogs that spend their time and money to give them the opportunity to do what they were bred to do. This award is shared with ALL those dogs and owners working towards their Field titles and Field Champion dogs from Hidden Cedars, as it could not have been achieved without you and surely would not have been as much fun.

Introducing dachshund owners to this sport is also a passion of mine.

When I sell puppies or young adults, I make sure they know what venues are open to them and their dachshunds. Field trials are at the top of my list. I have also been known to endeavor to educate any dachshund owner willing to listen about field trials. If we wish to keep this incredible venue alive, we need to turn all those newbies into lifers. When I started this project a few months ago, DCA Archives had a total of 11 BOB photos. Going through old magazines I have narrowed it down, now missing only 7 years. Do any members have pictures of the following dogs? It would be nice if it’s a photo of the DCA win, but it doesn’t have to be. A photo scanned and emailed to me would work fine. I don’t need the original photo.

I

usually write about Dachshund trials above and below ground, but a recent experience has prompted me to consider something that many field and den trialers encounter Toxicodendron radicans or Rhus radicans, better known as poison ivy. It, too, is active above and below ground.

This shiny green perennial is quite attractive with its lush, sometimes slightly jagged leaves growing in clusters of three (Fig. 1). Found everywhere, it seems, this very adaptable plant can grow as a shrub, a vine or a ground cover. It is happy in rich moist soil or in dry sandy roadsides. It loves the sun and can tolerate a lot of shade. It’s pretty, too. Its leaves have a lovely reddish hue as they unfurl in the spring. (Fig. 2) By summer it has small white berries (Fig. 3) that are very attractive to birds who sow the seeds widely. In autumn the leaves turn a brilliant scarlet – the better to lure you into touching them (Fig. 4). Most people are aware that the leaves carry an oil called urushiol that 90% of the human population is allergic to.

Notice I said human population – most animals including dogs are not affected. Urushiol bonds to the proteins in the human skin cell membranes to set up an immune reaction, a red blistering rash (see above) that can take from one to four days to appear. By the time you are itchy, you may have forgotten where you encountered it. At this point it useless to wash urushiol off your skin as the chemical change occurring in the skin is impervious to water and soap – you can’t really scrub your cell membranes. Delegate’s Report for the December, 2018 Meeting Held in Orlando, Florida submitted by Larry Sorenson AKC Delegate for Dachshund Club of America This is the highlights of the Delegates’ Meeting; a complete set of Delegates’ Meeting Minutes is located at: http://images.akc.org/pdf/Minutes_Delegates_M eeting_December_2018.pdf Proposals voted on at this Meeting The Chair called on the Executive Secretary to read the proposed amendment to Chapter 3, Section 13, of the Rules Applying to Dog Shows - Dog Show Classification. Ms. DiNardo: This amendment to Chapter 3, Section 13, of the Rules Applying to Dog Shows - Dog Show Classification, clarifies the eligibility of a Winners Dog/Bitch that has been defeated in a non-regular class as well as when Best of Winners is awarded. The proposal was approved by the AKC Board of Directors based on a Delegate Dog Show Rules Committee and Staff recommendation.

Passed easily. LLS The third vote was to amend Chapter 5, Section 2 of Rules Applying to Dog Shows: Ribbons, Prizes, and Trophies, which will allow clubs the option of including the date on class placement ribbons. The amendment was proposed by the Delegate Dog Show Rules Committee and approved by the AKC Board of Directors.

There was a motion to change the word, “except” to “however” in the following sentence: “Except ribbons or rosettes used for regular and non-regular class placements are not required to bear the date of the show and location of the show on the face, at the option of the club.” The motion was seconded and adopted.

This will save clubs money and it is optional. LLS The next vote was on Chapter 7, Section 1 of Rules Applying to Dog Shows: Judges, which converts most of the italicized text to part of the rule while keeping one sentence regarding where eligibility is expanded in italics. The amendment was proposed by the Delegate Dog Show Rules Committee and is approved by the AKC Board of Directors. There was a vote with

two-thirds in the affirmative, and the amendment was adopted.

Italic text was used by the Board for many years as a way to state policy rather than a rule, which the Delegates must approve. The Board is now going back to correct this.

The fifth vote was on Chapter 9, Section 2 of Rules Applying to Dog Shows: Superintendents and Show Secretaries, which takes italicized Board interpretation and makes it into the rules.

Additionally, it clarifies that an individual can only provide services for one All-Breed, or one Group club in a calendar year. The amendment was proposed by the Delegate Dog Show Rules Committee and is approved by the AKC Board of Directors. There was a discussion and amendment to change wording that did not pass.

Mr. Sprung then called for a vote on the original amendment.

There were two-thirds in the affirmative, and the amendment was adopted.

Italic again. LLS The sixth vote was on Chapter 9, Section 4 of Rules Applying to Dog Shows: Superintendents and Show Secretaries, which broadens the requirements regarding which forms the Superintendents and Show Secretary must have available at events. All necessary forms are available on the AKC website, or sent to the Super or Show Secretary, prior to the event. The amendment was proposed by the Delegate Dog Show Rules Committee and is approved by the AKC Board of Directors. There was a vote with two-thirds in the affirmative, and the amendment was adopted.

LLS The next vote was on Chapter 14, Section 5 of Rules Applying to Dog Shows: Measuring, Weighing, and Color Determination When Factors of Disqualification in Breed Standards or Eligibility Under Conditions of a Class or Division of Class Cancellation of Award, requiring the Event Committee or Superintendent or Show Secretary to provide digital scales in addition to wickets.

Additionally, changes were made to consolidate language and change italics to become part of the rule. The amendment was proposed by the Delegate Dog Show Rules Committee and is approved by the AKC Board of Directors. There was a motion, which was seconded to send the rule back to the Committee.

Sent back to committee, we will wait and see how it comes back. This may become an issue as we do have weight in our standard. The amendment was proposed by the Delegates Dog Show Rules Committee and unanimously disapproved by the AKC Board of Directors at the May 2018 Board Meeting. The Dog Show Rules Committee is demanding that this amendment go forward to the Delegate body for a vote, as per AKC Bylaws. There was a motion that was seconded to change the original amendment by adding the words, “by the Trial/Show Secretary or Superintendent”. There was a vote where a two-thirds affirmative majority was not met, and the amendment did not pass.

The Chair called on the Executive Secretary to read the proposed amendment to Chapter 16, Section 1, of the Rules Applying to Dog Shows Championships. Ms. DiNardo: This amendment to Chapter 16, Section 1, of the Rules Applying to Dog Shows - Championships, provides the Best of Winners the opportunity to earn one

championship point if the combined number of regular class dogs for both sexes is the minimum required for one point (usually two competitors total). The proposal was approved by the AKC Board of Directors based on a Staff and All-Breed Club, Dog Show Rules and Parent Club Committees recommendation reviewed at the June Delegate's meeting. The amendment will be published in two issues of the AKC Gazette and you will be asked to vote on it at the December 2018 meeting.

There was a vote on Chapter 11, Section 8-A of the original amendment, without the change.

A two-thirds majority was not met, and the amendment was not adopted. The last vote was on Chapter 11, Section 8-A of Rules Applying to Dog Shows: Dog Show Entries, Conditions of Dogs Affecting Eligibility. This puts the reinstatement process into the rules and removes the possibility of a reinstatement occurring at events. AKC currently provides a list of dogs that have been disqualified. The amendment was proposed by the Delegate Dog Show Rules Committee and unanimously disapproved by the AKC Board at its meeting in May of 2018. The Dog Show Rules Committee is demanding that the amendment go forward to the Delegate body for a vote, per AKC’s rules.

There was a vote and there was not two-thirds majority in the affirmative. The amendment was not adopted.

This proposal goes from easy to very difficult, however the delegates will have an opportunity to make decisions that will guide dog events well into the future. I will get more information from the DCA Board Members to make an intelligent and well thought out vote. LLS

From Gail Binder: Last summer we had a photo taken of 4 of us Dachshund folks and our critters at an obedience/rally trial.

The trials were the Susque Nango Kennel Club all breed trials in Binghamton, New York on July 21 & 22, 2018. I think it must be a record for the most Wirehaired Dachshunds at one obedience/rally trial. We had 7 wires and 1 lonely smooth. I can’t claim that they all took home green qualifying ribbons, but they gave it a good try.

The meeting opened at 9:15 a.m.

In attendance: Carl Holder, Fran Colonna, Vicki Spencer, Cheryl Shultz, Cyndy Senff, Connie Fisher, Kathy Lockyer, Michael Pitisci, Denise Siemssen, Georjan Bridger, Ken Levison, Sandy Arnold, Walter Jones, Deneice Van Hook, Cindy Niles, and Larry Sorenson.

President’s Report: Carl Holder stated he would be giving a report concerning DCA 2019 later in the meeting.

Recording Secretary: Vicki Spencer A motion was made and adopted to approve the Minutes of 5/03/18. *2019 Committee Chairs intentions – Vicki had emailed Board members a list of Standing Committee Chairs and their intentions for 2019.

Denny agreed to stay on as Head of Companion Events, but would like to start training someone for next year. She shared some of her duties as chair of Companion Events.

• She serves as a source of information for the DCA Board if issues arise that impact Companion Events (award plans, entry fees for these events, changes in rules, etc.).

• She assists with planning and logistics (if requested) for the National Specialty and host club’s obedience and agility trials and tracking tests.

• She maintains the DCA merit point programs for obedience and agility and determines if changes or additional merit awards are warranted.

• She makes recommendation to the DCA board regarding proposed changes in AKC regulations.

• She makes the Board and membership aware of any AKC rule changes that might affect DCA specialties.

• She relays membership concerns to the DCA Board.

• She serves as a resource for members interested in these events.

• She serves as liaison for the Versatility and Triathlon programs.

Denny also would like to start training someone to take over the duties for Triathlon.

Motion was made and adopted to appoint the current Chairs of the Standing Committees except for Versatility and Juniors.

Vicki will contact Brenna Potash Carlisle to discuss heading Juniors.

She will also contact Sharon MacDonald to find out if she is willing to oversee Versatility for 2019. Vicki will email the Board as soon as she hears back from these ladies.

Vicki reported she is visiting the AKC Marketplace at least once a month to verify membership of those claiming to be DCA members in their Breeder Profile. She is finding two or three people per month falsely advertising as being DCA members.

Corresponding Secretary: Cheryl Shultz requested Board action on a couple of correspondences she had received.

On 7-23-18 she received an email from Lorraine Bisso, Chair for Specialty & Supported entries at Morris & Essex Kennel Club, offering DCA the opportunity to hold a DCA specialty or support the dachshund entry at the Morris & Essex Dog Show in 2020.

Motion was made and adopted to do a supported entry at the Morris & Essex Dog Shows in 2020 by offering $25.00 for Best of Variety, $20.00 for Best Opposite Sex, and $15.00 for Best of Winners in each variety.

Cheryl will respond to Ms. Bisso.

A 9-25-18 email from AKC shared names of the nominees for the 2018 Lifetime Achievement Awards. The Board chose to vote for Thomas Bradley in the Conformation category and Frank Washabaugh in the Companion Events category. Votes are due back to AKC by 11/02/18.

At the May DCA annual meeting a motion was made and adopted stating that all DCA regional conformation shows must divide the Miniature Open Class by color if the Standard Open Class is divided by color and the wording be exactly as depicted at the DCA National Specialty show. Cheryl has sent information concerning this to Lynne Dahlén to place in the upcoming newsletter. She will also be notifying clubs when they apply for a DCA show. This does not affect local club shows.

DCA Website “Blast” and Bulletin Board – Cheryl expressed a concern with the Bulletin Board. Over the years fewer of the administrators can utilize the Board and some are no longer able to approve new members. She reported the Blast does not seem to be working properly. Lynne Dahlén is not able to get it to work. Charles DeLashmutt has agreed to look into it. A question was brought up asking if it was necessary for members to request to be added to the Blast. A website Blast goes to all members. It was agreed to postpone deciding until we see if Charles can get the Blast working.

A concern was expressed about membership data that is put on the internet. It was noted there is a spot on the membership application asking if the member wants their email address published.

A break was called at 10:07 to tour the hotel and convention center.

DCA 2020 Presentation – Lexa Richmond presented a schedule of events, a layout of the exhibition hall and a list of Dallas Fort Worth Dachshund Club members who will be overseeing specific areas for DCA 2020. She shared that, unfortunately they will not be able to offer tracking. The host club field trial will be held near Ladonia, TX January 28th and 29th followed by the DCA field trial beginning at the end of the DFW trial on the 29th and finishing on the 30th.

Two Earthdog tests will be offered on Saturday February 1st and the DCA test will be held on the 2nd.

DCA agility will be held in Addison, TX on April 26th. Welcome reception at the host hotel will be offered on the 27th followed by conformation shows April 28th through May 2nd.

DFWDC requested an additional $3,000.00 on top of the $2,000.00 DCA commits to hospitality costs. Ken Levison shared that Purina also contributes $2,800.00 to help with the costs of putting on DCA.

Treasurer’s Report: Ken Levison had emailed board members two reports, a Budget to actual 2018 report and an Account Activity report dated 1/01/2018 to 10/01/2018. He noted $15,000.00 had been pulled from savings to meet costs, but he would be transferring that money back to savings soon. He also noted the Trophy Plan was running a $2,800.00 deficit due to ordering trophies to have on hand. DCA 2018 made a net profit of $16,655.45.

AKC Delegate’s Report: Larry Sorenson had emailed two attachments to the Board for review.

He had emailed the Board requesting input on the following items to be considered at the next AKC delegate meeting.

1. Vote on the proposed amendment to Chapter 1, Section 4, of the Rules Applying to Dog Shows – Dog Shows Defined, which would allow clubs to limit their event by the number of dogs or by the total entry.

Vote on the proposed amendment to Chapter 3, Section 16, of the Rules Applying to Dog Shows – Dog Show Classifications, which would specify the order in which awards are presented by a judge at an All-Breed Show.

The amendment was brought forward by the Delegate Dog Show Rules Committee and unanimously disapproved by the AKC Board at the February 2018 Board meeting. The Dog Show Rules Committee is requesting that this amendment go forward to the Delegates for a vote as per the AKC Bylaws.

2. Vote on the proposed amendment to Chapter 5, Section 9, of the Rules Applying to Dog Shows – Ribbons, Prizes and Trophies, which would allow a club to offer a three-time win trophy for Reserve Best in Show.

3. Vote on the proposed amendment to Chapter 11, New Section 16, of the Rules Applying to Dog Shows – Dog Show Entries, Conditions of

Dogs Affecting Eligibility, to address the inappropriate collars and leads at dog shows. The amendment was brought forward by the Delegate Dog Show Rules Committee and unanimously disapproved by the AKC Board at the February 2018 Board meeting. The Dog Show Rules Committee is requesting that this amendment go forward to the Delegates for a vote as per the AKC Bylaws.

Without objection, Larry was instructed to vote No on the first proposed amendment and yes on proposed amendments 2 and 3.

He mentioned three controversial items to be discussed at the December meeting. The first proposed amendment involves allowing clubs the option of including the date on class placement ribbons. The second proposed amendment involves requiring permanent identification for a dog that is disqualified at a dog show, if it is ever to be considered for reinstatement. Along with the permanent identification, a photo would be required to be taken in the ring. Finally, the third amendment proposal involves providing the Best of Winners the opportunity to earn one championship point if the combined number of regular class dogs for both sexes is the minimum required for one point.

Membership Applications Summer/Fall 2018 – Georjan Bridger reported 21 new members joined DCA in 2017 with total membership dues of $37,526.00 received. So far in 2018 there have been 14 new members joining with 10 applicants to be considered at this meeting. Total dues received for 2018 so far have been $36,741.00.

Members who have passed this year are Penny Bergman, Lynn Blackbourne, Arvilla Mayhall and Linda O’Hanlon.

Board went into Executive session at 11:40 to review the current applicants.

Board came out of Executive session at 12:05.

The following people were voted into membership: Arleen & Richard van Elgort Brenda Riemer Susan Thomas-Goodman Noelle Hanson Brenda Adams Sydney Wills (Junior Membership) Karen Ashe Kerri Shandro Board recessed for lunch at 12:15 and came back into session at 1:00.

STANDING COMMITTEES Versatility Committee – Vicki Spencer received an email from Sharon McDonald reporting the committee is still working on hashing out possible revisions. They are trying to determine which spots to include and assign a respective point schedule.

So far Sharon has received 4 Versatility applications that she is processing for 2018.

Special Committees DCA 2020 – Denny Van Hook handed out a list of judges and dates.

She has numerous questions for the Board to clarify what is being done

by DCA and what St. Louis needs to address. A discussion followed concerning RV parking.

A motion was made to charge $35.00 for full hook-up and $20.00 for partial hook-up. Motion failed. DCA will add $10.00 to the Purina RV charges.

Photographer, catalogs, and decorations will be shared. Denny and Cheryl will work together to organize what will be needed for the field trial and earthdog events.

Welcome Bags – Kathy Lockyer requested Board members who are not able to get donated items for the Welcome Bags to donate $35.00 to help buy items for the bags. She will place a note in the bags stating the items

were donated by Board Members. She is also planning to include the new breed standard and a schedule. Carl will send Board members an email explaining where and when to send items to Purina.

Vicki asked about the educational programs being offered. Carl has talked to Dr. Jaime Modiano inviting him to speak on hemangiosarcoma.

Either he or an associate has agreed to come. There is a possibility of a neurosurgeon specializing in IVDD presenting a talk possibly on Wednesday night. Vicki suggested inviting Dr. Frick from Eureka, MO to speak on the benefits of canine chiropractic sessions for the athletic dog, if there is a time available. Fran oversees the educational programs and will get with Denny to work out who and when.

Since St. Louis is not the host club for DCA 2019, Denny asked if the DCA Host Club trophy plan for field trials applied to them. The consensus was since St. Louis is not the host club, they would not be expected to offer the extra plaques as required from a host club.

Carl reported AKC still has not approved our National due to conflicting dates with 2 all-breed clubs. He is still working on obtaining the approval from one of the clubs. Cheryl agreed to help in getting the second club’s approval.

Motion was made and adopted to raise entry fees for the DCA Field Trial to $30.00.

Set up is scheduled to begin on Monday afternoon May 20th.

Cheryl will send out a letter to all local clubs inviting them to host DCA 2021.

The Board ratified the motion to accept the Hampton Inn & Suites, Mesquite, TX hotel contract for DCA 2020.

Unfinished Business: Update on pedigree research transition project: Cyndy Senff reported things are moving forward with getting the project up and running. She has received a great deal of help from Chuck Orange from Pedwin who has cleared up a lot of the problems. He has upgraded the program to allow for many more titles to be added to the dogs in the pedigree base.

All titles from June 17 forward will be automatically added to the pedigrees. Automation has been set up, but a tech person is still needed to get the interface done. Cyndy reported Mr. Orange has worked many hours on his own time to get our program ready to go. A motion was made and adopted to increase the Pedigree Research Committee budget by $1,000.00 for this year. A motion was made and adopted to give Charles Orange $1,000.00 in appreciation for all the software work he has done for DCA. Cyndy will send Ken an invoice to reflect this cost.

DCA Trophy plaque pricing – The vendor for our 5-inch plaques had initially reported a price increase from $79.32 to $120.00. Sheila Parish was able to negotiate a price of $87.50. She has purchased enough 5-inch plaques to last through 2019. Without objection prices of plaques will not be increased to local clubs for 2019.

It was noted the Board has not heard back from PEC concerning possibly creating a Performance ROM. Vicki will email the Board Denny’s suggestions for a Performance ROM. Vicki will also send it to Tracy asking for PEC thoughts and recommendations. Discussion was postponed until the next meeting.

Approved Mentor List – Kathy Lockyer asked how someone gets on the list. She was told there is a form potential members need to fill out and send to Ken Levison.

Member Survey – Kathy Lockyer reported she has been working on questions and should have suggestions after the DCA 2019.

New Business: DCA Judge for BOB and Misc. classes – Fran Colonna asked about hiring a judge for Best of Breed at DCA. After a discussion it was decided since the three judges are elected by the membership, the Board should not choose a judge for BOB, that honor being reserved for one of the elected judges.

AKC dachshund program – Fran reported to the Board aware that AKC had released a video about dachshunds for the public. She felt the video was well done. continued on next page...

DCA Board Minutes continued from page 47 DCA Obedience Trophy wording – There had been an email received from a DCA member expressing a concern over the wording for the awarding of the obedience trophy. Denny noted the wording is not in compliance with AKC. In our current wording, a plaque or medallion (depending on number of entries) is presented for High In Trial. AKC states the award goes to Highest Scoring Dog in Regular Classes. In 2011 the Board approved both regular and optional titles would be counted in deciding the size of the award to be given. Preferred classes were not available at that time.

A motion was made and adopted to add language to the Obedience Trophy Plan to state, “Highest Scoring Dachshund in Regular Classes”.

A motion was made and adopted to strike out the word “alternative” in the sentence which states “The entries in Regular and Preferred/Alternative and Optional Titling classes are counted in the determination of awards.”

A motion was made and adopted to add the words “in Regular Classes” to the end of the sentence stating “If a dog competes in more than one class, only the highest score achieved by the dog will be considered so that the same dog cannot be awarded both the Highest Scoring Dog and Second Highest Scoring Dog. The Board ratified the motion that the Winter DCA Newsletter be dedicated to Producers/Studs with a discounted rate of $150.00 for a full color ad and $75.00 for a black and white ad which would include one picture.

The Board ratified the motion to donate $10,000.00 each to two Hemangiosarcoma studies. numbers 02234 and 2510 for a total of $20,000.

The Board ratified that due to #02234 already being fully funded a motion was made to donate $15,000.00 to project #2510 and not donate $10,000.00 to #02234 using funds from the DCA CHF account.

2510: Identification of Novel Synthetic Lethal Partners to Optimize PI3K Targeted Therapies in Canine Hemangiosarcoma Principal Investigator: Cheryl A. London, DVM, PhD; Tufts Medical Center Total Grant Amount: $168,857 Grant Period: 3/1/2018- 2/28/2021 Project Abstract: Hemangiosarcoma (HSA) is a cancer of the cells lining the blood vessels that is very aggressive and has nearly always spread by the time it is diagnosed. HSA accounts for 5-7% of all cancers in dogs resulting in approximately 25,000-50,000 new cases per year. The treatment of choice is surgical removal followed by chemotherapy administration.

I hope all of you are surviving this nasty winter and looking forward to a great spring - including the 2019 Nationals. Don’t forget that the latest updates for the Nationals are on the FB page “DCA 2019”. Again, sadly, I won’t be able to attend, but all of those who are going, enjoy and have a wonderful time!

First, I want to remind all of our members of the very serious threats to dog breeding that some state legislators are contemplating. Please be very much aware of the various proposals that may become law across the country. If passed, these laws will desperately impact the dog fancy.

Unfortunately, despite aggressive therapy, the majority of dogs diagnosed succumb to their disease within 6-8 months. Virtually no improvements in outcome for affected dogs have occurred in the past 30 years despite multiple clinical trials and research efforts. More recently a new therapy has been developed targeting two receptors on HSA cells. However, the majority of dogs still died, by 10-12 months after treatment. The molecular pathway known as the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway has previously been implicated in the pathogenesis of many forms of cancer including HSA. Indeed, inhibitors of PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway have some activity against HSA cell lines in the laboratory. The investigators have generated data showing that a subset of canine HSA tumors possess genetic mutations in PI3K that are known to activate the pathway in cancer cells. In this study, they will fully characterize the expression and function of PI3K in canine HSA tumor cell lines and tumor samples. This information will then be leveraged to identify new ways to block the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway using a combination of small molecule inhibitors that are most effective at killing tumor cells. These data will then be used to design future clinical trials in dogs with HSA. The Board ratified the motion for DCA to pay for an airline ticket for Carl to visit Purina Farms.

DCA had donated a 100-year Bronze to the AKC Museum. A suggestion was made to contact the museum to ask what has happened to our donation. If it is not being displayed, we will ask for it back.

Without objection Cheryl and Larry will compose a letter to the AKC museum curator.

A motion was made and adopted to copyright the Dachshund Standard.

Ken agreed to look into the process.

A suggestion was made that the Nominating Committee send out a card to all Board members stating who is being nominated. Without objection, once the Nominating Committee has selected their slate, the Board will be notified of their selections.

Without objection, the Earthdog Nomination card will not imply four judges will be hired. The number of Earthdog judges hired each year will depend on the anticipated need for that particular year. Without objection, two judges will be hired for DCA 2020 Earthdog.

A question came up concerning the need for earthdog and field trial judges nominated to judge DCA to declare a willingness to judge. Cheryl explained she wants confirmation so that a lot of time is not spent with contacting people who do not want to be nominated. She will accept an email confirmation.

Next Meeting: Our next meeting will be held in Orlando, FL on January 26th.

the following: (1) Mandatory – Bench Championship, Field Championship and titles in Earth Dog, Obedience, and/or Agility and (2) Two of the following: Titles in Rally, Trick Dog, Scent Work, Tracking and/or CAT. WWII DACHSHUND MASCOT Contributed by John Gallun

The statue here at Fort Benning is a monument to the 551st Parachute Infantry Battalion from WWII. It is located on Sacrifice Field on Main Post on Fort Benning. The dachshund on the monument is in tribute to the 551st’s mascot during WWII, a pup they “acquired” prior to shipping out to Panama – they named her “Furlough” and she was with the 551st from December 1942 until she was lost during the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium in January 1945.

Its initial cadre came from Company C of the 501st Parachute Infantry Battalion, while the rest of that battalion was absorbed into the 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment. Its first draft of new men was gathered in the Frying Pan Area of Fort Benning, Georgia, on 30 October 1942. Those personnel were trained as paratroopers through the Parachute School Replacement Pool in November–December 1942.

Leaving Fort Benning on 11 December, they passed through Richmond and staged at Camp Patrick Henry, near Newport News, Virginia, arriving there on 13 December. While at Camp Patrick Henry, the men picked up a unique mascot, a short-haired black and tan dachshund puppy they stole from the yard of the port commander. They named her Furlough, which was the thing the men most desired. Under strict orders of secrecy, they could not wear their hard-won airborne insignia, had to hide their newly acquired tattoos that revealed their military affiliation, and were prohibited from leaving the base.

The 551st Parachute Infantry Battalion (551st PIB) was, for many years, a little-recognized airborne forces unit of the United States Army, raised during World War II, that fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Originally commissioned to take the French Caribbean island of Martinique, they were shipped instead to Western Europe.

With an initial strength of 800 officers and enlisted men, the remaining 250 members of the Battalion were ordered on 7 January 1945 to attack the Belgian village of Rochelinval over open ground and without artillery support. During the successful assault the unit lost more than half its remaining men. The Battalion was inactivated on 27 January 1945 and the remaining 110 survivors were absorbed into the 82nd Airborne Division.

Virtually nothing of the unit's history was known to the American public until the 1990s when renewed interest prompted its veterans to seek recognition for their costly success at Rochelinval. In times of need, dachshund friends step up!

February 13, 2019: Sometimes in this world it is difficult to believe that miracles can happen. Two nights ago we got our own miracle here in Poulsbo, WA. We have had major snow (for us), over 2 feet here at the house. Our dog yard roof collapsed from the weight of all the snow. Our two standard breed-down girls from GCH DC Solo's Voodoo Queen SL (Burnie & Marie) were let outside to the 40 x 25 foot dog yard for a potty break before bed and Jeff had just come in through the main door to the garage (only 1-2 steps in) when there was a loud noise and house shook when the roof collapsed over the yard.

Debris was wedged against the door, but he was able to force his way out where Marie came bolting inside unhurt. But where was Burnie?

We started digging shoveling snow and moving sections of the roof I would say for well over an hour with no success finding her. We were just sure she was gone, but we decided we had to keep searching to recover her.

We reached out to Eline Koolhaas-de Groot and her husband Wouter Koolhaas, but they could not get out of their house. They got a neighbor with a 4x4 to bring them out here.

The roads are about impassable, given we are down a private drive, it was not plowed. They did make it and immediately pitched in and

started digging at the far side of the dog yard and after some time Wouter calls out “I’ve found her and she is alive!!”

Through some miracle, she was under a roofing panel that was covered in snow but supported by a metal beam that had fallen and did not crush her but was close enough to her to provide enough room and air to keep her alive. She was cold and wet so we put her in a warm bath, blow-dried her off, and she acted as if nothing at all happened!

We look at the mess and still cannot believe that both were unharmed and are so grateful to our friends for dropping everything and braving terrible conditions to come out and assist us. We cannot thank Eline & Wouter enough.

A nice bottle of cheer is in their (and our new friend Jeff, their neighbor, who drove them here) future when we can dig ourselves out enough to make it to the store.

I would say it is ok to believe in the power of God and Miracles and of course good friends!

It was scary! As her traveling companion and friend I stayed behind (as she went to the hospital) to care for the dogs and to prepare for Monday knowing she would want her dogs shown if at all possible. I wanted to show Luna as well. I am writing this post on Facebook recognize some true angels who came to my assistance at a very stressful time. Trudy Kawami was by my side for the entire afternoon helping and finding ways to make things work. Cheryl Edwards (Gordon Setters) immediately came to me and asked what I needed done! Ben and Amy Perez (Gordon Setters)moved into action and not only helped me organize all our things so I could get our 6 dogs back up to the room but volunteered to take our benching

crates, Randy’s purple trolley, my grooming table and supplies, a chair and bedding for all the dogs to Pier 92 and set it up at our benching! Just wow! Randy’s daughter, Courtney Eltringham drove down to be with her mom at Greenwich Hospital and get her safely back to the hotel late that night and then helped me ex the dogs both that night and the next morning in addition to loading the van, etc!

When we arrived at the Piers, another group of angels appeared!! Rafn Karlsson and Gísli Sigurðsson Gröndal (who came all the way from Iceland to get one of my puppies), Constance B. Fisher and Kandice Kostic all helped get the dogs from our van into the building and to the benches! We got all together and made it to the ring by the hair on our chinny chin chins!! And we did well! (Randy’s Annabelle - 1st AOM under Dr. Donald Sturtz, my Luna - Select Bitch!). As I write this, I am tearing up with gratitude to all who not only helped Randy in her moment of crisis, but also for making a dream come true for me with Luna, a wonderful win, my first at Westminster, with my own homebred dog.
