Brahmacharya is attained through tenacious determination

Conti. Issue No.: 63

EDITORIAL In this current time cycle, the illusory attraction (moha) for sexuality is so rampant and many people are very tired of taking the beating because of this moha of sexuality but they do not find a way to become free from it. One does not find a liberator who can grant the permanent freedom from it. Many young men and women, who did not want to get married at all, used to come to Dadashri, but due to ignorance of how to move forward in life afterwards, their lives were ruined by ongoing conflicts in the family and entering into married life against their desires. When such young men and women come to the Gnani Purush Dadashri, at that time they were eligible for marriage and they are confused as what to do? Yes, if such young men and women do have the intense desire to accomplish brahmacharya (freedom from sexuality in mind, speech and body), they can attain that, provided they get the critical guidance of the exact way to brahmacharya. The young person who has attained the Self from Gnani Purush Dadashri, now does not want to get married, but lacks the true understanding about brahmacharya. Where and how does he begin? The thoughts that oppose brahmacharya will continue to arise. The intellect will show how it would be so difficult to live a life without anyone else. Everyone has married, so they must have done so with understanding. I have a heavy stock of sexuality so I will not be able to conquer it. Countless such thoughts will delude you. Therefore, revered Dadashri shows him ways, one by one. Nature supports the one who has strong resolve and wants to follow brahmacharya (absolute freedom form sexual impulses through mind-speech-body). Unflinching determination saves even if one is caught in all the traps of circumstances. Therefore, one needs to make the determination more and more strong, so that one remains unyielding even in adverse circumstances that are adverse to brahmacharya. Along with this, one needs to have the special attentiveness that any deception and insincerity (pol) in his matter will destroy the determination (nischaya). When one remains constantly sincere to the determination, and that determination verily becomes the goal, then it is possible to win the entire world and its interactions. Along with this, Dadashri gives a beautiful key, ‘I have experienced the same experiences that people have experienced.’ Using this key one should make his decision strong by studying with critical vision (nirikshan) what pleasure-pain is there in the married life, and then he will not remain inexperienced. And on the basis of this Gnan, if the brahmacharya is practiced under the shelter of the Gnani, then one can become the greatest evidentiary instrument (nimit) for the salvation of the world and he can attain safe side forever for moksha. And the Gnan shaktis (energies of the awakened Self) can manifest in this life and one can attain the clear distinct experience (spashta vedan) of the Self. ... continue on next page Printed & Published by : Dimple Mehta on behalf of Mahavideh Foundation, 5, Mamtapark Society, Bh. Dadashri states that the reason for weakness in brahmacharya is due to the lack of one’s pratignya (absolute sincerity) to the Agna (decision to follow the Gnani’s instructions). That is why it is said in the kramik path (step by step path to liberation), that take poison and die if you have to but do not violate your vow of brahmacharya. One can get the full energy and strength from the Gnani for brahmacharya, but one’s own pratignya for the same must be very strong and beautiful. It should be without construction-destruction (ghadbhanj), lalacha (subtle underlying greed), dushmanavat (impurities in the mind leading to animosity). In this Dadavani, the keys and warnings against the mistakes related to sexual attraction, force of sexual thoughts, and the understanding of that which is beneficial and that which is harmful; are understood and experienced by the seeker under the living guidance of the Gnani, and these represent the final assessment of what the Gnani Purush Himself had experienced. This then will make firm the determination of the seeker to practice brahmacharya and is thus gets the graced by the Gnani Purush to accomplish and attain brahmacharya. ~ Jai Sat Chit Anand

Brahmacharya is attained through tenacious determination { Please note that ‘S’ Self denotes the awakened Self, separate from the ‘s’ worldly self. The Self is the Soul within all living beings. The term pure Soul is used by the Gnani Purush for the awakened Self, after the Gnan Vidhi. The absolute Soul is the fully enlightened Self. The worldly soul is the self. In the same manner, ‘Y’ You refers to the awakened Soul or Self, and the ‘y’ you refers to the worldly self. This differentiation is unique to critical understanding of the separation of the Self from the self a/k/a the non-Self complex that is accomplished in the Gnan Vidhi of Akram Vignan.}

Conquer sexuality by staying subservient to the Gnani Questioner: I have heard that it was worth getting married in the Satyug (era characterized by unity in mind, speech and actions), but not in the Kaliyug (The current time cycle, characterized by lack of unity in mind, speech and actions). Dadashri: What is the worth in getting married? One gets married because he lacks understanding, otherwise he would not. Questioner: I have noticed one thing that people are searching for a path of brahmacharya (absolute freedom from any sexual impulses through mind, speech and body) but they cannot find it. Dadashri: Yes, they cannot. You have to have someone above you and that too with energy of words. You cannot do it on your own. It is because of ‘our ’ energy of words (vachanbada) and vision of the path that you 2

are able to practice brahmacharya. And once you practice it, you are a king; king of the whole world! Questioner: Yes, at the time of getting married one declares, ‘I am now done for!’, but the poor man does not have any other path. Dadashri: He does not like the beastliness of it, but what can he do? There it is all unwanted beastliness. Sexuality is open beastliness. There is no choice in it, is there? It is enough if one conquers just this. Hence, decide daily, that you want to conquer it just once, nothing else. And it is winnable right now. Under the grace of Dada, it is all winnable. For the one who decides not to get married Questioner: I do not wish to get married at all, but my parents, friends, and relatives are pressuring me to do so. So, should I get married or not? Dadashri: If you definitely do not wish January 2011

DADAVANI

to get married then, because of this Gnan that you have taken, you will fulfill your goal of human life. Everything is possible with the energy of this Gnan. I will explain how to conduct yourself and with that understanding, if you remain afloat, then you will reach the shore of salvation. You will be blessed.

side in no time. Even God will not question such a safe side. You have been given all the freedom to eat and drink whatever you please, have you not? Had I objected to all that, many people would not come here. That is why ‘we’ (the Gnani Purush and the absolute Self within) have given the freedom.

Questioner: So many people are putting a lot of pressure on me to get married.

The perpetuation of the cycle of the worldly life is based on sexuality (vishaya). There are only five vishaya (five senses here), but vishaya of woman (sexuality) is very dangerous. It produces very dangerous vibrations. Our Gnan is so good that nothing will touch a person and all his past will be erased, if he remains within the parameters of Gnan. But he has to maintain awareness towards sexual matters. One has to maintain the opinion ‘there is no pleasure in it (sexuality) and it is entrapping.’ It is not a garden; it is a trap. You will become free if you maintain such awareness. But one does not have such awareness, does he? How aware will a person be where there is a trap? And what is it like if one is taking a stroll in the garden? There is joy walking in the garden, whereas one is anxious to get out of a trap, is he not? Therefore, ‘You’ should tell ‘Chandresh’ (name of the young man Dada is addressing, substitute your name here)’, ‘Chandresh, when will you get out of this? This is a trap. It is not worth falling into it!’ But one does not see it as a trap and so he feels safe there, does he not? He can find a solution if he completely changes his understanding.

Dadashri: Have you understood vyavasthit (scientific circumstantial evidences) or not? Questioner: I have understood ‘vyavasthit’. Dadashri: Then no one is going to be able to do anything outside of vyavasthit. So leave it all to vyavasthit, and make a firm decision (nischaya) that you do not want to get married. But what will you do without getting married? Questioner: In which life have I not experienced that? Dadashri: You are right in stating in which life you have not experienced that! No matter where you have been; in a life as a dog, goat, donkey, tiger, you have experienced this, have you not? But it is better if you can be free from marrying if it happens as per your intention. Now, you will have to take the approach of, ‘I have experienced the same experiences that people have experienced’, will you not? Otherwise people will call you inexperienced. Whether to get married or not is under the control of vyavasthit. But tremendous energies will manifest if one practices brahmacharya for five years with the support of this Gnan, and how greatly his body will form! He will not have any disease his whole life. Our science is such that it creates a safe January 2011

Understand it before you enter into it Questioner: I have made the decision today but still a lot of past stock (karmic) remains. Will I be able to get out of this with this decision? Dadashri: You will get out of it if it is a true decision. Nischaya (decision) is the main thing. The world cannot touch a person who has made the decision. Why do you have doubts? 3

DADAVANI

Doubting is indecision itself. Questioner: I am making sure of it by asking you. Dadashri: But no, to have doubts, is verily indecision. Nothing is going to happen. What is going to happen when Dada is looking out for you? Therefore, there is no need to doubt anything. You will be able to practice brahmacharya because of the Gnan you have, otherwise I would have told you ‘no’. I will give people the agna that they will have to get married. It is because of Gnan that I am saying ‘yes’ to you practicing brahmacharya. This is because a person needs something for pleasure, does he not? What pleasure can a dying man live and take support from? This Gnan is such that it keeps you in meditation of the Self (dhyan), and that will give you instant bliss. Or, if you see Shuddhatma everywhere for an hour, see the Self- Atma-the real and the relative (the non-Self), everything will be regular. Will you practice brahmacharya half your life or will you get married? You cannot marry after that, you should not even have thought about marrying. To think that way is a liability. What I am saying is that do not emulate others (about practicing brahmacharya). Hey! At least think about it. This is not something worthy of emulating. Why don’t you get married instead? You will not miss out on moksha if you were to marry. In other religions, you will. One cannot attain moksha by not getting married nor can he attain it by getting married. Some men have become baavas (a hermit; an acetic; a monk; one who renounces worldly attachments) for countless past lives and yet they have not attained moksha. ‘That other man is practicing brahmacharya so I want to do the same’ - do not do that. It does not work like that with brahmacharya. You should test yourself very rigorously. ‘We’ tested some of these young men. They would get scared just hearing about women. 4

They all become terrified even before ‘we’ broach the topic of marrying. So then we realized that women are not part of their karmic effect. This brahmacharya that you are holding on to is a very good thing. But do not follow it out of intoxication. Do it with an understanding, if you are going to do so. If you were to get into kusang (company of that which makes You move away from the Self) from now on, immediately the milk within will turn to ‘yogurt’ (the pure milk within will turn bad). You have to make tea yet from that milk, and that milk will go bad. If you were to place a container of yogurt and milk side by side in your pantry, and even though you have not put the culture of yogurt in the milk, will the milk not turn sour the next day? Does that happen or not? So understand that is how effective this world is. Milk will go bad even though no yogurt is put in it. That is why one has to be very strong. There is infinite bliss in the path of brahmacharya. You will inadvertently continue to receive bliss. However, if you get confused even slightly and slip up, then you will also suffer just as much. That is why ‘we’ caution you. Sexuality is such a thing that it will make one slip. Do not grieve if you happen to slip but be aware that there is a chance of slipping here. Hang on to the firm decision till the end The energy behind a firm decision (nischaya-shakti) is the greatest energy. Say one has to decide whether to cross a river or not. A decision is made to cross it. To cross it means to cross it and to not cross it means to not cross it. You should maintain the force of pratikraman on thoughts of sexuality and if this is maintained, then all that is ‘fractured’ within, will be resolved. You have to keep the spiritual readiness (upaadan) alive and ‘we’ are the nimit (the evidentiary doer), ‘we’ give you our grace and January 2011

DADAVANI

energy of our words (vachanbada), but preserving the firm decision (nischaya) is in your hands. By attaining this Gnan, You have received such a high state, that it is possible to accomplish whatever work you wish. There is no other place where there is danger. This sexuality (vishaya) is the only danger, and if you step on ‘this’ side, there is liberation (mukti). Your work will be done if your firm decision is unshakable. Hence this is the only ‘screw’ you have to keep tightening day and night, because there is no end to the world’s strangeness. You never know when it can entrap you. The slightest of weakness on your part will destroy brahmacharya. If your firm decision is broken even in the slightest, if you do not set the nischaya right to begin with and it gets broken, then you will turn towards sexuality. That will be the end of that. It is good that your mind remains steady this way, otherwise do come and tell ‘us’ when you have a bad thought and ‘we’ will show you a solution for it. ‘We’ will tell you what you will encounter on that path, otherwise you are doomed. You should always have a solution at hand. If you come and tell everything to Dada, your mind will become bound (it will come under control). Thought is such a thing, that a tuber of that thought may remain dormant for four to six months and then it will sprout, then the thoughts will come, but then you should do pratikraman. Sexuality is the direct cause of the greatest misery. It is a bundle of ill repute. Therefore, there should be so much awareness; there should be such an unveiled Gnan that You are able to see to such an extent that you will be able to see before and after situations. Then there is no problem. Mind is separate: You are separate Questioner: Would the mind not January 2011

complain if it does not have any interest in something? Dadashri: Let it complain! Everyone’s mind complains like that. The mind will complain when it is time for it to do so. Do you want to start a dispute with it when it complains? There is nothing after a while when its time is over. After a while, it is as if nothing happened. Then it will not complain the whole day. But once you get trapped, then you are trapped. If you are not, then there is nothing to it. Why don’t you remain strong? Questioner: I am able to remain strong some times. Dadashri: What will your mind tell you? It will say, ‘I do not want to finish my education.’ So should you do that? Questioner: I will do what Dada tells me. Dadashri: Would ‘we’ ever hurt you? You may do things to hurt yourself but ‘we’ can never do that, can we? Once you come in contact with ‘us’, ‘we’ give you all the remedies for your betterment. Then despite that, if your mind does not improve, that is the account of your karma. The ‘medicines’ we give you cures everything but if you are stubborn, then you will not drink it! Questioner: Pinch our nose and pour it in our mouth. Dadashri: Who would pinch your nose? This is not something that can be done by pinching your nose. Were you not telling us that you do not like going to school? Should you not have the nischaya (firm decision) that you want to finish your education? Then you can make plans of ‘I want to do this, I want to do that. I want to stay in the company of spiritual aspirants and practice brahmacharya’ – you can have such 5

DADAVANI

plans. What is the point of living life without plans? Questioner: Even I do not like going to college. Dadashri: You have to go to college. Should you not satisfy everyone’s minds? You can go to moksha having satisfied your father and mother. How can you go to moksha otherwise? Do you think revolting and running away from home solves everything? Will liberation happen that way? So you should not be contemptuous (tarchhod) towards anyone. Questioner: This principle of karma, does it also apply to the matter of brahmacharya? Dadashri: You can maintain brahmacharya if you decide not to get married. If you have manobud (strong mind), then you can maintain it. Our Gnan is such that it helps you maintain it. Other karma are not likely to let you off, are they? How can they let you go? Questioner: Will the karma of marrying not chase us? Dadashri: It will, if it is very sticky. And if it is sticky, you will know it right away. You will smell it. It can be settled with Gnan. Our Gnan is such that it can take care of the karma (getting married can be removed). But these other karma will not go away, will they? No new signature under the influence of sexuality Questioner: I suppress these thoughts but even then they come. Dadashri: What I am saying is that there is nothing wrong with the thoughts coming, but keep ‘seeing’ those thoughts and do not come under their influence. Do not place your signature under its influence. They may tell you, ‘Go ahead and sign in.’ You should say, ‘No, I 6

will not sign anymore. I did sign for many days, but I will not do that any more.’ What ‘we’ are saying is that you should decide that no matter what, you do not want to get into this any more. Remain separate and keep ‘seeing’ them and one day you will be free. Questioner: Do I have to continue ‘seeing’ the thoughts even if they are sexual in nature? Dadashri: You simply have to keep ‘seeing’ them. What else; do you have to accumulate them? Questioner: Should I not throw them out? Dadashri: You have to keep on ‘seeing’. After continuous ‘seeing’ you have to tell Chandresh (‘file # 1’) to do pratikraman. You have to do pratikraman for any sexual thoughts, desires or gestures that happen in the mind, speech or the body. Imagine how much bliss You will experience if you become free from all sexual thoughts? Just imagine how much bliss will be there when they are gone forever. There are four pillars of liberation (moksha), real knowledge (Gnan), real vision (darshan), real conduct (charitra), and inner penance (tapa). Now, when do you have to do penance? When thoughts about sexuality arise and you maintain a firm decision not to give in to them, the Lord has called that ‘penance’. When there is no desire for sexuality at all and when thoughts that lead to desire arise, that is where penance begins. Thoughts of sexuality and abrahmacharya will come, and if in spite of this, one keeps praying for the energy of brahmacharya, it is highly commendable. With these prayers, the seeker will attain the goal over a variable period of two to five years. He, who conquers abrahmacharya (sexuality), conquers the entire world. The governing deities, January 2011

DADAVANI

the celestial protectors of the path of liberation are very pleased with the one who is in brahmacharya. One is walking on the wrong path if he walks according to the world view, is he not? But brahmacharya can be practiced when a Gnani Purush is present, otherwise one cannot. One should not have even a single sexual thought, under any circumstance. The moment his thoughts turn, everything will be ruined. No matter what, not even a single thought of his should turn. Because you have this Gnan, the awareness is there for sure. And because we have the awareness, our thoughts will not turn or change and therefore nothing will happen. Nevertheless, if there is a thought change, pratikraman needs to be done because it is an effect of past karma. You have to pay off the debt that has resulted in this spoilage in this life. Stay as far away as you can from the company of those who are likely to trap you in sexuality, because if you get trapped even once, you will keep on falling into the same trap. So run! You must run as far away from that person as possible. You won’t slip if you avoid places where there is a chance you might slip. In satsang, there is no chance of meeting any other ‘files’ (people who tempt you sexually). People with the same spiritual goals come together here, do they not? When dwelling happens in sexual thoughts What should you do when sexual thoughts arise? Farmers have a practice that when the cotton crop grows to a certain size, they remove all unwanted plants or grass and weeds etc. That process is called ‘nindvoo’. If they see any other plants growing besides the cotton plant, they remove it and throw it away. Similarly, you should remove only the sexual thoughts and throw them away as they arise. Otherwise, if they get to a certain ‘height’, they will produce January 2011

their own fruits, which then turn around and sow more seeds. Therefore, they should be uprooted the moment they sprout, uproot them before they give fruits. Questioner: How is that method for brahmacharya? Dadashri: When a thought changes, can you not tell about what the new thought has started? When that thought comes, you should not let it linger on. That thought should not become dhyanroop (the dominant mode of meditation); let the thought come. Thoughts are bound to arise as they are there within you, but they should not become dhyanroop-make you engrossed in it. You should remove them and throw them away before they become dhyanroop. Questioner: Dhyanroop meaning how? Dadashri: To dwell and play (ramanata) in the same thoughts. When you dwell in just the same thought; that is considered to have become dhyanroop meditation on it only— become the form of the object of meditation. And that leads to inattentiveness on anything else outside. Are there not people who are inattentive on the outside? Don’t people ask ‘Where is your dhyan (attention, meditation)?’ So then you will know where your attention is. It is where ‘Dada’ had said not to dwell on. Dwelling in the same thought and playing there is called dhyan. That dhyan then becomes dhyeya (goal; object of meditation). Once those thoughts turn into dhyan (meditation), then you lose control. There is no problem as long as they do not become your dhyan. Questioner: How can I tell it has not become dhyanroop and that it has been weeded out and removed? Dadashri: You should uproot it and throw it away as soon as it sprouts and then change the 7

DADAVANI

train of thought. You have to change it to something else. Otherwise start doing japa (‘Dada Bhagwan Na Aseem Jai Jaikar Ho’, or ‘I am pure Soul’). As that time passes, its time passes. Everything has a time limit, for example you will have such and such kind of thoughts between 7:30 to 8:00. If you let that time pass through, you will not have any problems. Thoughtful analysis of the beneficial and the hurtful Questioner: So is it true that sexuality will go away through understanding? As the understanding increases will sexuality (vishaya) go away? Dadashri: It goes away only with understanding. This snake is poisonous and the person it bites will die quickly. If such an understanding becomes established, then he will remain away from the poisonous snake for sure. Similarly, one should have the establishment of such an understanding in sexuality. Questioner: Yes. But why does one not get such understanding? Dadashri: It is something he has worshipped from time immemorial; he believes it to be the truth. Questioner: That is true, but the worship of the past and the Gnan of today; why is there still a war going on between the two? Dadashri: One does not have the energy to think in details, does he? Questioner: Is it lack of energy or is it the lack of desire? Dadashri: No, there is lack of energy (shakti); he has all the desire. Questioner: Now, I feel that there is energy for sure. Dadashri: There is all the energy, but it has not manifested, has it? 8

Questioner: So then how can that energy (shakti) arise? Dadashri: Day and night there are thoughts of that; one keeps thinking about it constantly and in that, how much is worth taking up with highest fervor and unity of mindspeech-body (aradhana) and how much of it is worth doing; all this becomes promptly clear as one goes into critical thinking about it. Questioner: So then that means that one should get rid of this worldly interaction (sexuality) one way or the other? Dadashri: That is why one uses the ‘three-vision’, does he not? And if one has thought it through, then he would not even have to apply the ‘three- vision.’ Questioner: The interactions we are faced with during the day are inevitable and mandatory. They verily are the obstacles that prevent the progress because there is simply no time to think about this. Dadashri: So instead of that, the best thing is if your drashti (eyes) gets stuck on anything sexual, then immediately unglue it and do pratikraman; that is all. No engrossment where there is opposition Questioner: Please explain the following: ‘With reference to sexuality between woman and man, One will wander according to the ‘contract’, Therefore oh, mind and intellect, beware!’ You had said that everyone takes it into his own language (interprets in his own way), so then what exactly ‘is as is’? Dadashri: Wherever attraction happens, if one becomes tanmayakar (engrossed, becomes the body-mind form) in that attraction, he is stuck there. The attraction happened, and if he does not become January 2011

DADAVANI

tanmayakar in the attraction, he does not get stuck in it. Then there is no problem if the attraction happens. Questioner: How does one understand that one has become absorbed and engrossed (tanmayakar-becoming the form of the mind and the body) in this that is sexual? Dadashri: There is opposition to it on ‘our’ part. This opposition in itself is our inclination towards not wanting to become engrossed in it. Because we do not want any association with sexuality, that is tantamount to our opposition, is it not? The fact that the opposition is there is indicative of internal separation. However, if by mistake involvement and engrossment happens then pratikraman should be done. Questioner: My objection is there through my nischaya (absolute determination) however even despite this; sometimes circumstances arise which lead to engrossment in it. Please explain what this means? Dadashri: You cannot become engrossed if there is opposition, and if you do happen to become engrossed, then you have stumbled, and for that there is pratikraman. But do not make a habit of stumbling; do not become habituated with the stumbling. Would any man slip deliberately? Do people have a habit of deliberately slipping in wet sticky mud? Why do people slip?

Questioner: It should not become a habit. Dadashri: Slipping is no more under your control. And therefore, the greatest thing is your opposition to it; tremendous opposition. Thereafter, you are not responsible for whatever happens. If you are absolutely against stealing, then you are not guilty of stealing even if you end up stealing. This is because you are against it. Questioner: I am against it, and yet I fall short, what is that? Dadashri: If you miss it afterwards, there is no problem there. God has no problem with that. God does not make a note of that, because one has to suffer the fruit, the direct effect of falling right away. Does he not suffer for that? If he did it for pleasure and because he wanted to, then he would feel happy about it. Questioner: How much of one’s wiseness (self guided will), work in sexuality related matters? Dadashri: All his wiseness is fine if he has attained Gnan. Questioner: Even if one has attained Gnan, a fraction of his prakruti plays a role, does it not? Dadashri: No. Prakruti becomes weaker with Gnan. If you are not in agreement with sexuality, then it becomes weak.

Questioner: That is because he walked on the mud which by nature is slippery.

Questioner: Even when we are not in agreement with it, it still gets drawn into it.

Dadashri: He knows the nature of the mud and that is why he sticks his toes in the mud for anchor or comes up with some other solution. He tries everything so that he does not fall and yet he falls, he slips down, so then the Lord forgives him. But, what can happen if one forms a habit of this?

Dadashri: It will be drawn. You should ‘know’ that too. Besides that you have never made a strong nischaya (firm decision).

January 2011

Questioner: I want it so that it will never get drawn into sexuality. Dadashri: Your nischaya should be such 9

DADAVANI

that ‘this is what my nischaya is’. So then it is not under your control what nature does. It is all scientific circumstantial evidence; there is nothing anyone can do there. Questioner: That means that such circumstances will not arise for me at all? How is that possible? Dadashri: That can never happen, can it? That is not possible, as long as the world is there; as long as there is the worldly life. When can that happen? As you progress ahead, then such circumstances will become fewer and in their place the right state will arrive on its own. Such is the state of the Gnani, and along with it there is the safe side. All one’s circumstances will be right. Questioner: Is His vyavasthit created like that? Dadashri: Yes. But that does not happen suddenly. For you, you will arrive on that road after covering many, many miles. Not everywhere there is a pull (attraction). How many places do you have such a pull? Do you have eighty out of hundred places where you encounter a pull? Exact solution against the force of sexuality If ever there arises an occasion of severe testing of your resolve for brahmacharya, if there is strong sexual attraction and inclination, then you should fast two to three times. When the force of unfolding karma is very strong, fasting can put a stop to it. The other type of fasting turns one into a twig! That fasting does not kill sexual passions. Questioner: So will fasting reduce those other forces? Dadashri: They will all cease. This is all a force of food. All other faults can be tolerated but not this one. This will destroy everything achieved over countless past lives. It will get 10

squandered away! Therefore, if you conquer this much, it is more than enough. If there is energy of brahmacharya, then the tubers of sexuality will stop. So maintain such energy that when the thoughts arise, wash them away; crush them as soon as they arise. Questioner: I have thoughts of only brahmacharya. Dadashri: That is exactly what I am saying, that you only have thoughts of brahmcharya, right? Questioner: Yes, yes. Dadashri: You do not have those other thoughts? Questioner: I find all that very filthy. Dadashri: That is very good. Questioner: I have realized one thing; that the birth I have taken in this current life is exclusively for the purpose of getting rid of the tubers of sexuality. Everything else is all ready for me. Dadashri: That is very good, you are wise. I like what you are saying. Now it is alright. I am very pleased. Becoming free from the spell of illusory attachment one becomes a Gnani Moha bazaar—the market of illusory attachment—begins at age fourteen and ends after forty years, and that is when the ‘tree’ dries up. There are all kinds of moha (illusory attachments). Otherwise, each and every person in Hindustan has so much energies (shaktio), that he can get the ‘work’ done! Questioner: Where is the most energy used up, where is energy (shakti) wasted the most? Dadashri: In this moha for sure (the illusory attachment to sexual pleasure). In moha January 2011

and unawareness (ajagruti); however the lesser the moha, the greater the energy. The mighty king of moha has cast his last weapon, the spell of illusory attachment for sexual pleasures. Right now, moha (illusory attachment) for sexuality is so all pervasive and widespread. Before, there was moha for pride (maan), moha for fame and recognition (kirti), moha for money; moha was scattered everywhere. Today all the moha has pervaded only into sexuality and people live in terrible inner burning and restlessness. Only the ascetics have become free of sexuality and are thus enjoying somewhat of a peaceful life. If a person has tremendous energy of Gnan (Gnan shakti) and he does not even have a thought about sexuality, he will not marry. But as long as there is illusory attachment for beauty, he should get married. Marrying is mandatory and it is very risky and dangerous. And yet one has no choice but take on the risk. He who has moha should get married. Otherwise, he will become like a wandering bull, he will end up having sex with anyone who comes along. He will pay a heavy price by ‘entering into someone else’s farm’ and invite a life in the lower life form world. Getting married means to suffer (bhogavey) pleasure with one who is right and accepted in the eyes of the world. And that other is wrong and not accepted, and even a thought of that leads to a lower life form.

entrapment! And that verily is called moha (illusory attachment). One does not see that which is; he sees that which is not. Who is nirmohi (one free from illusory attachment)? The Gnani Purush; the one who sees everything the way it is. He can see right through; he can see bones, intestines etc., He sees everything as it is, naturally and spontaneously. Where chit is attracted, there is opposition laden pratikraman Questioner: My chit does not wander off when I am sitting at home, but the moment I step outside the home, there is no street without women on them and then the tubers of sexuality do not refrain from sprouting.

Why must attachment (raag) ever happen for the body? What is the body made of?

Dadashri: And you cannot do without going out. You have to go shopping or to work and sexuality (sexual thoughts and visions, visual interactions of sexual nature) will arise, and that is why you have to do pratikraman. The problem will be solved only if you do pratikraman. Otherwise, the attraction that happened will stick to you for sure. It is not possible to avoid going out and just stay home, you have no choice, according to vyavasthit you have to go out and those others will not refrain from sticking to you. The awareness (jagruti) may be there, but even then the matching that had happened in the past life, results in the attraction in this life, and again the bhanjghadproblem (destruction-construction cycle) will not refrain from happening. So it will peel off if pratikraman are done after returning home.

Questioner: Pudgal (non-Self complex of subatomic particles).

Questioner: I cannot do pratikraman properly.

Dadashri: Yes, pudgal, but of what kind? If it were made of only gold, then it would not smell, the hands would not get dirty and nothing would happen to it. But this ‘package’ is wrapped with a nice looking ‘sheet’ (skin), and that is why there is such tremendous

Dadashri: It will happen if you make a resolution (nischaya) of doing it. You must definitely do pratikraman for sure. Your mind will become clear after pratikraman.

from Sat Yuga to Treta Yuga to Dvapar Yuga to this final era of Kali Yuga, In Kali Yuga (the age of the ‘Kali’ of Kali Yuga means ‘strife, discord, quarrel, or contention.’ This is characterized by lack of unity in mind, speech and actions. Kali Yuga began at midnight (00:00) on 18 February 3102 BCE in the Julian calendar, or 23 January 3102 BC in the Gregorian calendar) the importance of brahmacharya is greatly reduced, and that verily is the cause of the current predicament. This would not have been the state, had the importance of brahmacharya been maintained. There is no problem with the married life, but people have eradicated the importance of brahmacharya. So then one’s awareness becomes dim. Even after attaining our Gnan, the awareness in some people does not remain, as it should, otherwise what awareness will the one who has taken this Gnan have? It will be awareness like that of a God. Is your awareness good or does it become dim? Questioner: I cannot judge its limitations. Dadashri: You will not trip if you have great awareness, will you? Do you make mistakes? Do you realize that you have erred, after you make a mistake? Questioner: Yes, I do. Dadashri: So if you have great awareness, then it would not be such that you make a mistake and then You realize it. ‘You’ will realize it even before you make a mistake and that mistake will still proceed to happen but you will know of it first and then it will happen. Therefore, it will not stop from happening but You will know of it before it happens. Questioner: I need tremendous awareness if I want to remain in brahmacharya constantly, do I not? Dadashri: Awareness (jagruti) itself is 12

verily the Self (Atma) and if one is ‘asleep’, then other work happens. Hence, in the presence of awareness, no wrong work will happen and there is not much interference (dakhal) in this. You have to take a beating from the interferences that arise due to lack of understanding, do you not? Questioner: The other day You had said that if one does not agree to sexuality then he will be saved. So how can one attain such steadfastness? Dadashri: Yes, but agreeing means that you never lose this resolution (nischaya); then nothing will happen. But one cannot stop from losing this resolve! When it is going to happen due to the effect of unfolding karma; you lose the nischaya for that moment and it will happen. So what do you have to do? All You have to do is to keep the awareness that ‘I am not in this at all!’ You have to be careful that You do not lose your resolution in this. Despite that, if you fall a victim to it, there is no problem. You do not want to fall off the train, but if you do fall, then we call it vyavasthit, do we not? But is anyone likely to fall deliberately? Sexual effects through kusang What would happen to the mind of a person who never talks about sexuality or even listens to talks about sexuality; were to listen to such talks? Questioner: The mind will become spoiled. Dadashri: So he does not talk about sexuality and he does not even listen to anyone talking about it. Such talks are not Mahabharat (religious epic) that one should listen to it. Questioner: What if I am sitting in the office and have no choice but listen to it? Dadashri: Then do something that it does not stick to You. Listening to it will happen if January 2011

you are interested in it, otherwise not. If ‘Your’ interest is not there, the ears may listen, but the sound will not reach ‘You’! Questioner: Does this happen because there is weakness in the applied awakened awareness (upayoga) of the Self? Dadashri: There is weakness in the very upayoga. The attraction would not be there if there is upayoga, and if the interest and attraction is there, then there is no upayoga. Questioner: Then I have to settle all the kusang (wrong company) that I encounter at work. What do I have to do based on what You have said? How do I settle (nikaal) it? Dadashri: ‘You’ have to settle it by remaining in ‘our’ Agna (the five Agnas) and through pratikraman. The one who wants to settle it, will go ahead and do so and the one who wants to fight, will fight. Your wish is to settle it, no matter what it may be, is it not? Questioner: My colleagues at work ask me whether or not I get affected when I see a woman. Dadashri: Then what? Questioner: Then I tell them that when I see a woman, attraction happens. But I do not tell them that I am not going to get married. Otherwise they will make fun of me and tell me that I am not a man if I never get affected when I see a girl. That is what they would think of me and they would spread such rumors. So I tell them that I feel attraction towards her. Dadashri: You should not lie like that. Real man is the one who does not get attracted. On the contrary, the weak men get attracted the most. Tell them, ‘I do not get attracted. She does not affect me at all.’ That is why ‘we’ say, these Aptaputras should go to just one place and then never have to put up with such talks. No poison would have a chance to touch them. January 2011

Kusang is the greatest danger Questioner: Does one not need the collective energy of the company of other human beings (sanghabada) to practice brahmacharya? Dadashri: Yes, it is necessary. Questioner: So that means that my decision (nischaya) is weak by that much? Dadashri: No, the energy of such company is necessary. No matter what kind of follower of brahmacharya one is, but kusang (harmful company) is harmful to him for sure. This is because the effect of coming in contact with the ‘spell’ of harmful company is bound to hurt him. Questioner: Does that mean that bad company can destroy the energy of the resolution of brahmacharya? Dadashri: Yes, it would break the energy of the resolve. Bad company can completely change a person’s everything just as the company of good people can change a person’s life completely! But once a person joins kusang wrong-harmful company (company of that which takes one away from the Self), it is very difficult to bring him into satsang (company of that which leads to the Self) and it does not take long for a person who is in satsang to fall into kusang. This is because bad company (kusang) is slippery; it will take one down, whereas good company (satsang) will take him higher. It takes a long time to take one in kusang higher into satsang. It takes no time to take the one in satsang into kusang. Just meeting one old acquaintance in kusang, will take care of all that, and ruin you. Hence you cannot trust anyone. You should move around only in the company of those you trust. Kusang is poison for sure. You should stay as far away from kusang as you can. The 13

DADAVANI

effect of kusang happens on the mind, happens on the intellect, happens on the chit, happens on the ego and it happens on the body. The effect of one year of association with bad company will last up to twenty-five years. So how bad is the fruit of one year’s worth of bad company? And that effect will not leave no matter how much one regrets. And once one slips, he sinks deeper and deeper till he hits the bottom. Then one regrets and he cannot turn around even if he wants to. Therefore, everything will improve for the one whose company improves, and if his circle of company becomes bad, everything will go bad for him. The greatest danger lies in the bad company one keeps. There is no problem when one remains in good company (satsang). Company of the ones with the one exclusive goal Acquaintance (parichaya) with the outside world is the wrong acquaintance and one has not become completely acquainted with the Gnanis. This predicament would not have arisen if one had become acquainted. That is why one has to remain in the company of gnanis (mahatmas who are in Gnan). It is because of the acquaintance and interaction with the outside world that you have taken this beating (maar), have you not? Everything continues to deteriorate through the external acquaintance interactions; a lot is ruined. It is not possible to follow brahmacharya (absolute freedom from impulses of sexual nature through mind, speech and body) and maintain ongoing acquaintance with the outside (sexually interacting) world! One needs a whole group, one needs a place to live where he can sit together with other followers of brahmacharya and talk; do satsang and also have fun some times. Their whole world is completely new and different. In this all the brahmacharis have to live together. It becomes a problem if they do not live together but go to their own homes instead. 14

Brahmacharya cannot be practiced without the company of other brahmacharis. There should be a group of at least fifteen to twenty brahmacharis. There is no problem if they all live together. An association of two or three does not work. The air and atmosphere of a group of fifteen to twenty is very effective for brahmacharya. The spiritual energy of the atmosphere around such a group is sustained at a high level, otherwise it is not easy to practice brahmacharya. We are not here to start a new generation, are we? Have we come here to establish a throne? We have just come here to settle the account of our karma; but this new ‘item’ popped up in the middle. You cannot tell anyone to practice brahmacharya, nor can you tell them not to. One can practice brahmacharya if it is so in the unfolding effects of his karma, and we cannot say no to it. He can practice brahmacharya and we cannot say no to him. He can become an instrument (nimit) towards the salvation of the world if there is brahmacharya. One will get thoughts of making a determination (nischaya) for brahmacharya in this life if he had made some nischaya for brahmacharya in the past life, otherwise the thoughts will not come. It is of no value if one enters into brahmacharya simply because others are doing so; it should be natural and spontaneous. One should have only one kind of company (sang); no other kind should enter into it. Milk is milk and yogurt is yogurt. If milk and yogurt are placed in proximity to each other, the milk will turn sour. Then you cannot make tea with it. Do such pratikraman on Sunday There can never be any medicine in the world to purge sexuality. Our Gnan is such that it will purge sexuality. Whenever a thought or a January 2011

circumstance about sexuality arises, it is instantly given as a sacrificial offering (aahuti) in the fire that burns sexuality. Sexuality is the only thing that is the museum (collection place) of nothing but deceit (kapat). It creates infinite liability of mistakes of karma and ruins many life times. Sexuality will not suddenly go away but one will find a resolution for it when he gets mentally and physically fatigued (kantado) because of it and keeps doing pratikraman for it. Real pratikraman is one that is done the moment a ‘stain’ happens. Why do you wash away these ‘stains’? It is because it is not kraman (neutral activity of mind, speech and body that does not hurt anyone); it is atikraman (aggression through mind, speech and body). Therefore, do pratikraman for it, and it should be a ‘shooton-sight- pratikraman’ (pratikraman that is done the instant any transgression happens). Pratikraman of the Akram path is a ‘shoot-onsight-pratikraman’. Otherwise, this lafaroo (anything that sticks on to people and possesses them) of sexuality that ‘possesses’ people, would never leave, would it? You want to be ekavtari (one who has just one life before final liberation), but when will these lafaras leave? You can be free of them through ‘shoot-on-sightpratikraman’. If one does pratikraman about sexuality all day on a Sunday, then for the next six days even before a hint of sexuality arises, pratikraman will engulf it from all the sides. Desires about sexuality will arise for sure, but maintain such a force of pratikraman within, that the ‘policemen of pratikraman’ will jump all over them should they arise. To destroy the seeds of subtle preference and interest Questioner: Sexuality will go down as we do pratikraman, will it not? Dadashri: Yes, it goes down as one does January 2011

pratikraman. One does do pratikraman but longing and hunger (ruchi) for sexuality continues to remain within. This he is not aware of. The desire and hunger for sexuality must not remain at all. Aruchi (lack of hunger and subtle longing) towards sexuality should arise within. Aruchi does not mean scornfulness, but it should happen that there is nothing at all in it. Questioner: After attaining this Gnan, one has the firm decision (nischaya), it is his goal, and yet the ruchi for it still remains, what should one do in order to destroy it? Dadashri: He will succeed if he does “exact pratikraman”. There will arise all other tools within—Gnan laden evidences, to help him see the aruchi—nothingness in it; all that will help. Questioner: If moha (illusory attachment, attachment due to illusion) and raag (attachment) for a woman goes away, then will the ruchi (desire and hunger of sexual nature) begin to leave? Dadashri: The tuber of sexual hunger and desire (ruchi) has been in existence for countless lives and you never know when it will sprout again. Therefore, it is important to remain within the company of brahmacharis (those practicing brahmacharya). If you leave their company, because of the sexual hunger and desire, sexuality will start to sprout all over again. Therefore, you have to stay in the company of brahmacharis. The tendency to indulge in sexual pleasure has not been completely eliminated; therefore it can start all over again if you associate with the wrong people (kusang). That is the nature of wrong company. Questioner: pratikraman?

thousands of pratikramans, things will go wrong in the presence of the wrong company. Questioner: Even when we do not want or desire wrong company at all? Dadashri: You may not want the wrong company (kusang), but do circumstances for it not arise sometimes? If satsang (company of all that which leads to the Self) goes away and kusang (company of all that which leads away from the Self, bad company) comes along, the wrong company will take over if there is desire within. However, the wrong company has no effect on the person whose tendency and inclinations, desire and hunger of sexual nature have gone or are eradicated. This means that there is not even the seed (the cause) of desire and hunger (ruchi) and so nothing will sprout even when the circumstances arise, will it? The results of the collective energy of brahmacharya for the goal Questioner: Why is so much importance given to sangha (association and in the company of) for brahmacharya? Dadashri: Everything depends on the sangha. Questioner: When so many brahmacharis get together, the sanghabada (the energy of the association) increases, so the outcome and the result for being in the state (parinati) will be greater, is that correct? Dadashri: Yes, as the sanghabada (energy of a group with an aim), the higher one rises. If there are only three satsangis (in the company of those interested in the eternal truth of brahmacharya), then the result is lower, if there are five, then the result is in accordance to the five, and if there are thousand, then one will not have any other thought at all. Everyone’s effect affects the other one. The brahmacharya—freedom from sexual 16

impulses—that remains today is the result of your merit karma (punyai) and when that merit karma changes, when difficulties arise then purushartha (applied awakened energy of the Self) will be required! Remain in the crowd of those who are in brahmacharya. In a group, there are the effects (asaro) of the thoughts of each one on the other! It is not easy to practice brahmacharya; for it, one needs the friendship and support of nature. It needs our merit karma (punyai) and our purushartha (applied awakened energy of the Self). Then bliss (anand) will arise, but that too when you all live together. That is because of the effect of one affecting the other. What would happen if five unworthy (nalaayak) persons were placed amongst fifty brahmacharis? ‘The milk will go bad.’ Dada is all ready for sure; all that is needed is the unflinching decision (nischaya) of all of you (addressing young men who are desirous of entering or accomplishing the goal of brahmacharya). Everyone will find the resolution. You make mistakes right now, but that is good too, because you will not have to look back once you have such experience. But if you do not have the experience of this side, your brahmacharya will be weak. On the contrary, if one falls after taking diksha (here a vow of brahmacharya), he will be censured, disgraced, defamed and thrown out. Questioner: That is a grave responsibility. Dadashri: Of course, a responsibility for sure! They will throw you out of there for sure. Then you belong neither here nor there! Instead, if you make a mistake now, it will be acceptable but there must be no mistakes later on over there (in the company of those who have taken up brahmacharya under the guidance of the Gnani). Do you get slaps from the mistakes that happen? January 2011

DADAVANI

Questioner: Those mistakes are not worth making. Dadashri: It is not worth making mistakes, but one does get slapped with the mistake, does he not? But if you allow yourself a slap of sexual indulgence there, if you live in the Brahmacharya Ashram (dwelling of the brahmacharis) and you make any such mistake, they will all get together and throw you out for sure. So be very careful before you take any step. If you still make mistakes, then keep making an intense mental note (nondha) of it. There should not be any complaints about your conduct, purity in sexual matters (charitra). Religion ceases to exist where there is a complaint about one’s conduct (charitra). The whole world agrees to this. If there are other mistakes they may be tolerated, but any violation purity in sexual matters (charitra) will not be tolerated at all. Charitra (purity in conduct) is the main foundation stone in all this. There is no trace of the word ‘vishaya’ (sexuality) in religion. Religion is always in opposition to the word sexuality. Are you going to preserve this brahmacharya? Questioner: Yes Dada, for sure. Dadashri: I tell everyone that he should strengthen his nischaya (decision). Our Gnan is such that it will take you right across to the other side, but one cannot get through if he does not have Gnan. Peace (shanty) is there for you due to Gnan, and bliss (anand) is there for You due to Gnan. As You enter into Gnan, you will forget the pain (dukha) of sexuality. Our Gnan is so wonderful that a person can live without vishaya (sexuality). In the brahmacharya of the kramic path, (the traditional step by step spiritual path) one is not allowed to even look at a woman; one is not allowed to touch a woman. He has to mix up January 2011

all his food and then eat it. There are so many kinds of such rules in the kramic path. Your brahmacharya should be such that just looking at your face dazzles people. Such a brahmachari purush (man of accomplished brahmacharya) stands out! Beware of the dangerous red light shown here Jagruti (awakened awareness) stays for You now? The bliss (anand) has started, has it not? All those others are in bliss. There is a new kind of radiance on their faces. Going over just one wall brings bliss and it manifests immediately. If however one does not cross that wall and slips, then he becomes entrenched in the side of sexuality. Then he will move away from the path, therefore you have to be careful when you are being put to a test. Thereafter, if you pass the test, the deepest abyss of the self opens up and the bliss continues to gush forth. There is nothing wrong with anything else happening. ‘Sang saiyogi na thhavo joyiiye.’ A company must never lead to a circumstance (sexual union via mind, speech or body). There is nothing wrong with anything else happening; that is not worth worrying a lot. But the joint union (mind or speech or body) of man-woman is verily death; that is how it is for you all who have taken up the path and are following brahmacharya. Questioner: Does that mean that we would rather die than to have that happen? Dadashri: No, that verily is death. Death happened just like that, because you slipped just when the bliss was to happen. Just as if you were fasting and everything within is working towards your benefit, but you start eating again before the benefit arises. Therefore be careful. Otherwise you will never get this (bhumika) state of accomplishing brahmacharya under the active guidance of the 17

DADAVANI

Gnani Purush again. You will not get this bhumika in any other era of the Time cycle. Therefore, be very alert and warned. You should never deviate even slightly from this, and if you are faced with lot of adversities, then let me know. Don’t worry about other things; none of that is necessary - all that are useless. The man-woman union should not happen; that is all. I will let go of the rest. Questioner: Hence the rest does not carry as much liability as this? Dadashri: No. The greatest danger lies in this. That is verily suicide. You can patch up all the other things; there is a cure for that.

for five-seven-ten types of mistakes. There is cure for them; I have all kinds of cures. But ‘we’ do not have a cure for this. One comes nine thousand miles and then turns around because he does not find anything. Now ‘that was’ on the nine thousand five hundredth mile. Instead spending your energy in turning around, why don’t you go forward mooah (the one who is dying by the second)? See how much difficulty this other young man has because he does not have the nischaya? Questioner: The nischaya (decision) is there, but mistakes happen.

Questioner: The nischaya (firm decision) within about brahmacharya has become like that now.

Dadashri: Other mistakes when they happen, can be accepted, but circumstance of sexual interaction (mind or speech or body) with anyone must not happen. This conversation is only for this group; ‘we’ are not including you in this group. When you show ‘us’ your ‘examination test’ result; that is when ‘we’ will include you in this. Then ‘we’ will scold you too, but ‘we’ will not scold you now. So enjoy yourself. You have to enjoy for your own good, do you not? What do you have to enjoy for?

Dadashri: Your nischaya has happened indeed. We can see the radiance on your face.

Questioner: One does not do himself any good if he is enjoying.

Questioner: There is no problem with having slight weakness in Gnan, but I want to attain perfect brahmacharya. I want to make it completely rootless so that there is no responsibility in the next life.

Dadashri: No, he will not. Then why are you enjoying yourself? Write me a note if a change takes place within. ‘We’ can put up with mistakes of all other kind. If ‘we’ did not then one would be in a predicament. The poor fellow would be utterly confused and lost! There are problems with restrictions on food (elsewhere); one is not allowed to eat freely, so what can the poor person do? Should he jump in a well? That is why ‘we’ will pardon all other kinds of mistakes.

From hereon, the more real penance (tapa) you do, the greater the bliss will express. This is the penance that has to be done, not any other penance. If there is a brawl or a small street fight, it can be brought under control quickly if you inform the police. That is how this has to be kept under control.

Dadashri: That is it, that is it! Questioner: Having met Dada, I want to bring an end to that. Dadashri: You have to bring an end to that. Make sure that your firm decision (nischaya) is not shaken. Circumstance leading to sexuality should not arise. ‘We’ will let go (pardon) everything else, ‘we’ will show the cures for all that. ‘We’ will show you the cure 18

DADAVANI

(ruchi), there the energy of the Self (Atmavirya) will prevail. What kind of desire and hunger (ruchi) do worldly people have? They desire ice cream, not the Atma—the Self. Do you want to come here for the Self or for the ice cream? They would answer, ‘To eat ice cream.’ How nirvirya—lacking the energy of the Self—are these people! Do you understand this talk?

it changes its direction and thereafter, the aura and glow (teyj) on one’s face will be apparent to all. If a practitioner of brahmacharya does not have this glow on his face, then it can be said that his brahmacharya is incomplete and it has yet to be attained.

That other man is very shrewd. Any thing that tempts and seduces does not tempt him. Nothing in this world can tempt him, whereas with this fellow here, even ice cream can tempt him sometimes.

Dadashri: An aura of brilliance and a glow is apparent. The energy of mind keeps increasing and the speech that comes forth is first class. The speech is pleasant, the conduct is pleasant. These are all the qualities. This takes a lot of time, it does not happen right away.

As brahmacharya takes hold, worldly life loses its lure and one does not like it, one will not like the most beautiful thing in this world, even a bit. The realm, and the play within the Self, and that which leads to the Self, is the only thing that is liked. The direction of ‘like’ has changed. And when the energy of the body (dehavirya-semen) rises, one does not like anything about the Self. Questioner: How does the energy of the Self (Atmavirya) arise? Dadashri: With the firm resolve of brahmacharya and following My Agna, the energy. The energy goes with the firm resolve of brahmacharya and following ‘our’ Agna. When two eyes meet two eyes, attraction happens there, do continuous pratikraman for that. There may be twenty-five to fifty such instances, not more. Do pratikraman and let go of all that. It has arisen due to atikraman, and it ceases through pratikraman. It is not the habit of energy (semen here) (virya; dehavirya; essence of energy) to flow downwards and dissipate. It drains down into lower realms (adhogati) because of one’s lack of nischaya (various meanings: firm resolution or the Self state). Once a firm decision is made, January 2011

Questioner: What signs are evident when one’s virya (energy; semen) is beginning to rise higher?

That which is unshakable, is nischaya One man tells me, ‘I have no desire at all and yet I have thoughts about sexuality; what should I do about that?’ One has done nothing but just that for countless past lives and its echoes that ring in this life are due verily to that. Only Gnanis can free him from that, if he meets one, otherwise no one can free him. How can they? Who can free him? Only the One, who is free himself, can free others. And when one becomes free from sexuality, consider him liberated. His work is done, completed, just by becoming free from sexuality. The one, who is desirous of becoming free, will find a way to do so, sooner or later. The stronger the desire, the sooner he will find the way, and the weaker the desire, the longer it will take. But if it is a true desire, he will definitely find the way. One desiring to be married will not refrain from marrying, will he? In the same way, this desire (of liberation through brahmacharya) too should be strong. What is nischaya (determined and unshakable decision)? Nischaya means, not succumbing to worldly difficulties, regardless of 19

DADAVANI

how overpowering the onslaught is. No matter how many different types of inner ‘lawyers’ and appeals come to entice and change Your understanding, You would remain still and unyielding. Once a firm decision is made, you would not change it. That is called a ‘nischaya’. One just has to make a firm decision (nischaya), nothing else. People do not understand what is considered as bhaav (inner intent). Abhaav (dislike) follows bhaav (like), whereas nischaya means ‘I definitely do not want this’. Nischaya is purushartha (applied awakened energy of the Self). How is it that you can come to satsang daily? It is because you have made a firm decision (nischaya) of ‘I want to go’. Without the nischaya, it cannot materialize, can it? These are nischayas of your past life that are coming into effect. All the miseries that exist are because of indecisions (anischaya). Nischayas that are not firm e.g. ‘this will do or even that will do’, will have matching results. This fact that ‘we’ are wanting to share with you is extremely subtle. However many firm decisions you have made, that many ‘fruits’ you will get. Just look, you have made a nischaya to do a job, to do business, about the way in which you want to live, about not to live in at home, then about wanting to live at home again; you have realized the ‘fruits’ in accordance with that. You just have to watch the playing of this movie. I had made a nischaya (firm decision) that, ‘I want to do satsang, I want to work towards the salvation of the world’ and so for the past twenty-two years, this is what has been going on and it is here to stay. That is called nischaya. Then one will find a link and connection to it along the way. If one changes his nischaya before he dies, then how is he going to realize that nischaya ahead? He may find nischaya later, but it will not be continuous, it will be in parts. 20

If a well known astrologer had told you that your kadhee (soup) is going to spill over, you should still make an effort to prevent it from happening because his forecast can turn out to be wrong if the timing changes. And timing will continue to change during the day. Certain circumstances will arise that will change the timing. If your inner intent is strong, then it will also change the timing. The Self is full of infinite energy. The nischaya without understanding is raw and weak Questioner: You have placed great emphasis on nischaya. So then what should the brahmacharis have about nischaya? Dadashri: What is nischaya? It is to stop all other thoughts and come onto only one thought. For example remaining firm in your decision to go to the station from here and then from the station, taking the train, not the bus. Hence, if you make a firm decision, all the evidences for going by train will come together and make it happen. If your decision is not firm then the evidences will not come together and your goal will not be accomplished. Questioner: Yes, when the nischaya becomes weak, what should be there for the actual nischaya? Because the current time cycle is such that it will change one’s nischaya. Dadashri: If it changes, then you have to change it back again. Whenever it changes, you should change it back. There is the element of time and other such things, but they will not be able to compete with you, because you are the ‘purush—the male gender’. All other genders are different. Therefore, nothing can topple over the ‘purush—the male gender’. Questioner: Instead of changing our nischaya this way and that way, would it not be better to understand it exactly so that our nischaya will never change? January 2011

DADAVANI

Dadashri: No, it is a different matter when one understands it. Nothing should be done without the understanding, should it? But it is difficult for one to get that much understanding; instead it is better to go about with the nischaya. Questioner: You have said that it is possible to get rid of abrahmacharya (sexuality) with understanding and not with anything else. Dadashri: If it is with understanding, then one will feel disgust just thinking about it. But he does not feel any disgust and why does he still have raag (attachment) towards it, why does he still have a liking for it? It is because he has not understood it properly. Questioner: So his nischaya is not proper because his understanding is not proper? Dadashri: Yes, but understanding will take time to come, it is possible to understand, if one tries to go deep into the understanding. If it comes into understanding, then there is no need for nischaya. All that nurtures nischaya You will succeed in achieving your goal of attaining brahmacharya with your nischaya (unyielding decision) coupled with ‘our—Gnani Purush’s’ Agna, provided there is not the slightest wavering within in that decision. Our Agna will guide You wherever you go, and you must never abandon your vow (pratignya—the inviolate decision to follow the Agna). If a thought of sexuality arises then keep on cleansing it (pratikraman) for half an hour at a time by asking, ‘Why are these thoughts still coming?’ And never initiate the sexual look with anyone. He who wants to practice brahmacharya must not look at anyone with sexual intent. Others will do so, but do you walk with your eyes raised or downcast when you walk? January 2011

Questioner: With downcast eyes. Dadashri: Since when? Questioner: Since I attained the Gnan. Dadashri: Prior to that, did you walk with your eyes raised up? In doing that the eyes get ‘burnt’ and all the diseases are to be found in that. One looks and the disease enters within. Are the eyes at fault here? No, the fault lies with the ignorance within him. Out of ignorance he thinks, ‘This is a woman’, but what does Gnan say? It says that, ‘This one is a pure Soul (Shuddhatma).’ So it is a different matter for the one who has Gnan, is it not? The energy of ‘our’ words (vachanbada) is always there, but one will have to confirm to certain things so that his nischaya does not become shaky. First of all, you should not view anyone sexually. There is no problem if your eyes fall upon someone naturally and spontaneously. However, when you see a fully clothed person, you should be able to see what he or she would look like naked! Then how would they look if you were to peel off the skin. Then what would they look like if you were to cut them open and pull out all the intestines. That is how your vision will continue to look further and deeper. You will see all the phases exactly as they are. No one has studied in this way, have they? So then how are they to see in this manner? One has to think on this a lot and study it. The atoms of the female gender are such that even if you inadvertently happen to touch a woman, it can shake your nischaya. It will not allow you to sleep; such are the subatomic particles! Therefore, the act of touching must never take place, and if you are careful about preserving the purity of your vision, then your firm decision will not waiver. Have an inner intent of brahmacharya and be strong. Maintain awareness in your brahmacharya, because it does not take long 21

DADAVANI

for merit karma (punyai) to fade away. If there is tremendous energy in your nischaya, then only your work will be done. Nischaya will not remain when the mind spoils often, will it? You need tremendous nischaya; it has to be very strong. Then it will give you all the support and help. No one can succeed against nischaya. Nischaya is the greatest thing. Your nischaya has to be strong. Nischaya gets deceived from within by talks that arise within and then it receives advice from within. That is how nischaya is destroyed. So whenever advice is given from within, you should not listen to it. Do you ever experience that? Questioner: I went through all that two months ago. Dadashri: Does it not happen anymore? Questioner: No. Dadashri: That is good. There are a strong ‘regiments’ lying within. Against the weakness of sexuality… What is the nature of sexuality? The stronger one is the lesser his inclination towards sexuality and vice versa. The one who is completely weak has very strong inclination towards sexuality. So a person who is weak is so over come with sexuality that it will not let him come out whereas it will not even touch the one who is strong. Questioner: On what basis does weakness continue? Dadashri: When a person does not have any resolution to begin with, when he is not stable, then he will continue to slip. He continues to slip till he is done for. It is said in the kramic path that if one’s brahmacharya breaks, then he should take care of it by taking poison; it states that one should take poison rather than break his brahmacharya. Questioner: If one wants to attain his 22

goal, even in the Akram path one has to maintain the same kind of nischaya, does he not? Dadashri: It needs a strong nischaya; you have to maintain a tremendously strong nischaya. You will find some resolution (addressing an aptaputra desirous of brahmacharya). Are you going to give it to me in writing? Is that so? Then remain strong. Why do you not collide with all these cars on the highway? You have made a decision not to collide with anyone, even when the other person is trying to collide with you, so see how you get out of that situation; you don’t collide with the other person’s car, do you? Questioner: No. Dadashri: Do you not just avoid colliding with cars and everything; miss them by just inches? Questioner: We quickly get out of the way if we are about to collide with a car. Dadashri: So nothing will happen if you make a firm decision (nischaya). For your brahmacharya, you have ‘our’ full energy behind you. Your vow (pratignya) and resolution (nischaya) has to be strong and brilliant. Your vow (pratignya) should be free from ghadbhanj (construction-destruction), free from lalacha (ulterior motives) and free from dushmanavat (mind of contempt and enmity against sexuality). See dangers that lie at the ‘ridge-point’ Questioner: The other day you were saying that even in youth there is a ‘ridge point’, so what is this ‘ridge point’? Dadashri: The ‘ridge point’ means right at the peak. Where is the ridge of a roof? It is at the very top. Everything is subject to the phenomenon of rise and fall or birth and death. Karma and January 2011

DADAVANI

everything else has rise and fall or birth and death. Even the sun rises and sets, does it not? As compared to the position it is in when it is in the center, it is at the bottom when it is arising and it is also at the bottom when it sets. But when it is at the center; at the very top, that is called a ‘ridge point’. Similarly, all the karma reach their ridge point and then they set. There is also a rising and setting of youth. The moment a youth reaches the ‘ridge point’, everything topples over. If a person can pass through this point, he is a winner. I will look after everything, but if he changes his mind, then there is no cure. That is why I teach them to walk with downcast eyes before their karma unfold. They should not look at women. They can enjoy everything else. We cannot give you any guarantee because you are in your youth. Who can say what will be the consequences of when one’s youth reaches the ridge point? Most of the time nothing will go bad under ‘our’ protection, nevertheless some five percent or so would turn out bad. There are bound to be some like that, no? Questioner: So until we cross our ridge point, we have to maintain extreme awareness? Dadashri: It takes a long time for one to reach the ridge point. It is great when you reach the ridge point. Yet it is worth maintaining fear of this right till the end. Then you will realize that you have come into your safe side. Questioner: When anger-pride-deceitgreed are not fed for three years, they cannot sprout any more, does that also hold true for sexuality? Dadashri: There is no such thing like that with reference to sexuality. There is no exception here. There are exceptions in other things, but not here. One can be free from sexuality forever because of Gnan ‘Atiparichayaata avagnya - disdain January 2011

after deep familiarity’. Despite deep experience of the experiences of these five sense organs (vishayo) since time immemorial, one does not have disdain (avagnya) for them, is that not a wonder? This is because there are endless phases of each vishaya (sense related experience). From that, for the phases that are experienced, the disdain for them will make that many of them leave. As there are endless phases, one will have to wander one life to another for endless time. And because there are endless phases, there will be no end to it. One cannot be free from this without the Gnan. Our path is easy and straightforward in every way, but not for this sexuality. One has to get rid of it even through invoking the ego. That is because this is not charam sharira (The last body that the Self has before liberating to final moksha). Hence, one should remain in the Agna of brahmacharya even with ego. Even if you bind karma for this ego, one has to protect this much in Akram Vignan. Destroy the sapling of a sexual seed Sexuality is the only thing that calls for vigilance. It is more than enough if sexual impulses are conquered. The impulses must be uprooted as soon as they arise, before they produce sexual thoughts. Secondly, if an eye contact is made with anyone who arouses impulses of sexuality, you should immediately look away and change the inner visual link. Otherwise the sexual seedling will grow and even when it is tiny, it will sow seeds for more sexuality. Therefore, it is best to eradicate it when it is a mere sapling. You will know that ‘this is not a rose plant; it is something else’. So immediately uproot it and throw it away. As much as possible, you should uproot it (sexual impulse) and throw it away; one stroke and it is gone. All that you have planted in your farm is cotton, so then recognize what is cotton and remove all that is not cotton. That is called 23

DADAVANI

weeding out. If you ‘weed’ it out, then that is the end of it. You should squash it the moment it sprouts and that will be end of it. It is not possible to squash it before it sprouts. You will not recognize the seed until it does sprout. But you can recognize what kind of a seed it is when it sprouts. Questioner: But would he not recognize the moment it sprouts if he has the nischaya? Dadashri: In short, when you see another seed sprouting, the best thing to do is dig it up and throw it away. For making your nischaya strong There is nothing greater than the mere thought of taking the vow of brahmacharya and the firm decision of remaining in it. Such a person has grasped the essence of all the scriptures. The person, who makes a firm decision of being free from all these worldly entanglements, has understood all the scriptures. The illusion of sexuality is such that it will sink all, even he who thinks that he has no attachment to anything in the world. This illusion of sexuality has sunk great saints and masters of tremendous spiritual heights. Questioner: I have made the resolution to follow brahmacharya. What can be done to strengthen this resolve? Dadashri: You should decide upon, ‘I want to strengthen my nischaya (resolution)’. Questioner: Having said this once, we still have to keep ‘turning the ‘handle’,’ don’t we? Dadashri: Yes, you have to keep repeating this resolve and your energy will increase. Keep saying, “O ‘Dada Bhagwan’, I am making my resolution stronger and firmer. Please grant me the energy to strengthen my resolve of brahmacharya.” Such words will increase the energy. 24

Questioner: In this life brahmacharya has arrived as an unfolding effect of karma. What will it be like in the next life? Dadashri: It will be the same even in the next life. At the moment he is saying that brahmacharya is very good, this is what he really wants. So he will have the same thing in his next life. Questioner: We can tell from our thoughts as to what is coming out in the unfolding effect of karma, can’t we? Dadashri: No matter what one does or thinks, nothing will touch the one who has the nischaya. Otherwise, even one with less vishaya (sexuality), will have vishaya (sexuality) as an unfolding effect. Therefore, one needs to have a strong resolution (nischaya). Nothing happens to the one whose nischaya is unshakable. All kinds of ‘ghosts’ will possess the one who has a shakable nischaya; all kinds of diseases will enter him. Questioner: If one has a strong nischaya then there is no problem if he happens to get sexual thought, is that right? Dadashri: No, such thought will not even enter him at all. This is because he has attained the knowledge of the Self (Atmagnan) and that is why nischaya will happen; otherwise nischaya can never happen. Solutions to preserve brahmacharya Questioner: According to one’s built in nature (of the prakruti-the formed non-Self complex), if the vision gets spoiled- a sexual look happens then how can he erase that worldly interaction reaction? Dadashri: ‘We’ (the Gnani Purush and the absolute Self within) have all the cures to erase that. There is not a single remedy in this world that ‘we’ do not possess. ‘We’ have given these boys brahmacharyavrat (the vow of January 2011

DADAVANI

brahmacharya). Now despite this vow of brahmacharya, if he happens to meet a woman and his vision gets attracted towards her and his mind starts to have sexual thoughts, ‘we’ do not see him as being at fault. But if that happens, he is to immediately erase his mistake, because ‘we’ have given him the ‘soap’ to do so. If I am walking along and my clothes pick up a stain and I know how to wash it off immediately, will I not come to your house with clean clothes? Questioner: Yes. Dadashri: In the same manner, ‘we’ have given them every tool, otherwise how can they practice brahmacharya through their mind, body and speech; and that too in this current era of inner turmoil? I will show you the way to practice brahmacharya if you want to know. You have to follow that method. Otherwise it is not mandatory for you to practice brahmacharya. This will only happen for the one within whom the karma of brahmacharya is ready to unfold. There is no objection to getting married. But these people do not see any pleasure at all in being married. They cannot afford (tolerate the pains that follow married life) to get married at all. When they say ‘no’ to marrying, that is when ‘we’ grant them the vow of brahmacharya. Otherwise I will never tell anyone to take a vow of brahmacharya. That is because it is not easy to take a vow of brahmacharya and practice it. Taking a vow of brahmacharya and preserving it will happen only if the past life karma unfold accordingly. It can only be preserved if your deep inner intent (bhaav) in the previous life was to do so. The other way to preserve brahmacharya is dependent upon your unflinching determination to do so. Your unflinching determination (nischaya) coupled with the energy of my words (vachanbada), which is always there, will preserve your brahmacharya. January 2011

One experiences the bliss of the Self through right inner penance Experience will happen only after penance (tapa) happens, no? Otherwise how will experience happen? When the inside heats (antartapa), in whichever matter your inner ‘heats up’; ‘You-the Self’ try to remain separate from it. When the inner part ‘heats up’ ‘Youthe Self’ definitely gain experience from that matter, for sure. Questioner: So in whatever matter penance arises, I become free from that matter? Dadashri: It becomes free from You and that is Your experience. And the experience of that verily is the experience of the Self. Bliss and the light of the Self, will continue to increase, that is all. Questioner: What is it that arises, that one has to do the tapa (penance)? Dadashri: When you try to do anything against the mind-intellect-chit-ego (munbuddhi-chit-ahamkar), they will fight you; that is when you have to do the tapa. It will (burn) set ‘alight’ within. Questioner: But tapa will not arise if it is in accord with our goal, will it? Dadashri: It will not arise there. Tapa (penance) will arise when it is against your goal, and it should; not forever, but there should be tapa. If tapa is not there, then the foundation pillars are verily wrong. You have to have all the four pillars: Gnan-darshan-charitra-tapa (Knowledge-vision-conduct-penance), as and through the Self. One does not like sexuality. His goal now is that he wants to remain brahmachari—free from sexual impulses; then when he sees a woman, does he not have to do tapa? If at that time he suffered the exact right penance 25

DADAVANI

(samyak tapa), did not get tempted at all, then his experience (anubhav) would be immediate. That is called tapa.

If one wants to realize his goal, then he will have to let go of what he likes, but if his nischaya is wavering then nothing will be achieved.

Questioner: Therefore, where he felt pleasure before, his vision (darshan) there is now of, ‘this is not me’, therefore the tapa starts there. Then if the pleasure is felt, the tapa goes away.

Questioner: It is because of the habits of endless life times, no?

Dadashri: No. When he cannot bear it, he gets back into tasting the pleasure. One needs the energy of nischaya (unyielding decision) for penance (tapa). One man told me, ‘Hold out your thumb.’ I said, ‘Here, it is’. So he tells me, ‘I am going to burn you with a cigarette.’ I said to him, ‘Go ahead and light the match.’ He lit two matches. I just stood there. What is the basis of this tapa? The basis is the ego within of, ‘whatever is going to happen; let it happen’ – the same nischaya has to be there too. “Whatever is to happen; let it. I will no longer become trapped with ‘you—the ego enemy within’. I have been trapped for infinite past lives, now I will not be trapped” – such should be the nischaya. Now it is not my intent to destroy my goal. If the nischaya is not there, the pleasure will drag you in instantly. ‘A strong wind can blow a person away’; if such is your nischaya, then you will give in, but if you have a nischaya that you do not want to be blown away and that nothing is going to happen, then you will be spared. And the other person will say, ‘Hey, I will get blown away, I will be blown away’, he will easily be blown away. He will fly in the sky! Questioner: There, the wind will blow him away, who blows us away here? Dadashri: This too is a wind that is blowing in such a way; that he will be pulled away by the currents and the waves of attraction. He used to like the attraction before, and therefore attraction will continue to happen. 26

Dadashri: Chandubhai’s habits. What else then? All these problems are because of these habits. There is no problem at all if there is no habit. But he defends it whenever he can; he becomes controlled by the prakruti (the non-Self complex). You were saying that you experience pleasure here; that does not let one come into penance; it does not fall into aditha tapa (invisible inner penance). He tastes the garvaras (sweetness of the juice of doership) and enjoys the pleasure and on top of that he claims to the contrary ‘I am Shuddhatma only’. So why should ‘we’ bother? Therefore, ‘we’ tell all the mahatmas and are done with it. Then whoever does the wrong thing, it is his responsibility. Leave and forsake anything that interferes in the path of liberation and proceed forward. That is considered, as following the goal. You must make sure that you do not lose sight of Your own goal (dhyeya) of moksha no matter how difficult the circumstance you encounter. That which breaks Your goal is your enemy. How can You afford to have your goal destroyed? Otherwise it is analogous to entertaining sexual thoughts and ideas (abrahmacharya) while wanting to remain on the path of brahmacharya (absolute freedom from sexual impulses through mind, speech and body). Pleasure will arise within thoughts, but what can one do? Is it not a grave fault? Then naturally, your goal is bound to become infested with the ‘disease’! Putrefaction will start to invade, will it not? Here, you have to make the mind so tenacious and firm that whatever happens in this life, even if this body were to leave, in this very January 2011

DADAVANI

life the ‘work’ needs to be finished and accomplished. Such an unflinching and unwavering decision has to be made. The work will then definitely be accomplished by itself. You have to make this firm, for Yourself. There must not be any sloppiness on Your part. Thereafter, whatever happens is correct. Thereafter, you must not worry if some things do not work out. Everything will come along. What is the extent of your authority (adhikaar) in this? It is your bhaav (the deep inner intent) of ‘I would like to accomplish this much.’ The nischaya (the determining energy of the Self); You must use this authority of Yours. ‘We’ are pointing out all the danger zones and pitfalls on the path of liberation. Things will go wrong if ‘we’ do not point them out. All these mahatmas listening here have come here with tremendous merit karma and hence this speech and this topic has expressed in such exact details.

The result of accomplishing completion Now when will it be considered that you have completed this? When the other person feels samadhi (complete tranquility) just by looking at you, one forgets his pain by looking at you, then it is considered being completed. Your smile and laughter would appear such, your bliss would appear such that everyone will have a smile on his face, then you know that this pain of the self has completely gone. You all still feel tension and that too remains because of not staying in ‘our’ Agnas. Agnas are so beautiful and very easy but now you have to go through some suffering so there is no choice, is there? And we cannot interfere in that, can we? But some time or other You will be able to come out from this. This is because, when the right path is found, no one will miss taking it, will anyone? ~Jai Sat Chit Anand
