EDITORIAL No matter how many good qualities a human being has but if his ego is not beautiful then everything is useless. Ego should be beautiful. Ego should be such that people would like you and welcome you. Such ego can become so purified progressively that there remains only one degree difference between the self and the absolute Self (paramatma).

And if the same ego walks in the wrong direction then not only it will not bring about one’s own salvation, but it will hurt many people. Such unnatural (vibhavik) ego expresses as ego of doership (garva), intoxicated pride (mada), jealousy (matsar), pride (maan), ego with rich material (abhimaan), hypocrisy (dambha), false arrogance (ghamand) etc. These are all different forms of ego and crazy ego is also one type of ego disliked by people. Crazy ego is devoid of proper worldly interaction, it is laden with hurt to others, and it will show something that is different from the world. Revered Dadashri particularly explains in detail about this crazy ego which is one grave danger zone in the progress in the path of moksha. This crazy ego exists everywhere and keeps one wandering in world intoxicated in ‘I-ness.’ One thinks that he does not have such ego but it would be still lying around within assuming a small shape. It will not take much time for it to flare up to a huge size. You should identify this ego and eradicate it from its very roots. Now what will this crazy ego do? It will show the wrong to the right one, it will not let one accept the right talk, one will think that ‘I am right, my talk is right’ by having such insistence he will hurt others, he will try to do all the work through his own will and intellect and will keep creating entanglements, it will take sides with the intellect, it will create divisiveness by siding with the intellect, it will make one have intents of harm to others, it will bite the nimit the evidence in a happening, it will protect one’s own self, one’s own talk, and one’s own belief, it will see negative in whatever it is, it will create interference in everything believing ‘I am smart’, it will commit deceit to satisfy his pride (maan) hunger, and if his pride is not satisfied then he will insult the other person, it will wish bad for others, it will see the faults of everybody else and will see himself as ‘I am very wise’, ‘I know’, ‘I am special’, ‘I am something’, ‘I have skills’, it will perpetuate such intoxication that ‘one cannot do without me’, such a crazy ego laden one would not have complete awareness of Gnan but he would talk as if he is fully awakened and aware, and makes a fake show, opens a spiritual shop and opens a new path in religion that leads nowhere, believing that he has attained the absolute Self. Such mad ego will show its true colors in many ways. Here in Akram path—direct path to Self-realization, after attaining Gnan, ego is discharging and resolving and yet one has to ..... continue on next page Subscription : Yearly SubscriptionIndia: 100 Rupees USA: 15 Dollars UK: 10 Pounds 15 Years Subscription India: 800 Rupees USA: 150 Dollars UK: 100 Pounds Printer/Press : Mahavideh Foundation, Basement, Parshvanath Chambers, Usmanpura, Ahmedabad-380014

remain alert. Having become the Self, where is the place for ‘I am right and you are wrong’? You have to remain as the Self, and the moment the crazy ego arises; throw it out with a slap. The lifeless ego has to be resolved, and not protected at all. If that ego is not eradicated along with its very roots, it will not take long for it to grow all over again. Therefore, our goal now should be to begin the inner spiritual effort of digging out that ego and accomplish the ultimate clear and distinct experience of the Self. ~Deepak Desai

Let us identify the nature of the crazy ego { Please note that ‘S’ Self denotes the awakened Self, separate from the ‘s’ worldly self. The Self is the Soul within all living beings. The term pure Soul is used by the Gnani Purush for the awakened Self, after the Gnan Vidhi. The absolute Soul is the fully enlightened Self. The worldly soul is the self. In the same manner, ‘Y’ You refers to the awakened Soul or Self, and the ‘y’ you refers to the worldly self. This differentiation is unique to critical understanding of the separation of the Self from the self a/k/a the non-Self complex that is accomplished in the Gnan Vidhi of Akram Vignan.}

What is ego? Questioner: What is ahamkar ego? Where did it come from and who did it come to? Dadashri: ‘I am Chandubhai,’ verily is ego. To claim ‘I-ness potapanu’ where ‘You—the Self’ are not, is verily ego aham. If ‘You’ remain in ‘swakshetra – place of the Self’ then You are verily Atma— the Self. And to be at such imaginary location as ‘I am Chandubhai’ verily is ahamkar ego. It is a destructible (vinashi) thing. It is not coming from anywhere. It arises and dies. The belief ‘I am this’ applied where ‘I – the Self’ is not, is called ahamkar ego. An intent laden claim aropit bhaav at wrong place is called ego. ‘I am Chandubhai’ is the first ego. ‘I am this woman’s husband’, is the second wrong belief or ego expression. ‘I am this boy’s father’, ‘I am an uncle’, all these are ego (ahamkar). To say what one is, is being without ego (nirahamkar). One is ‘Shuddhatma–pure Soul’ in the real and if one speaks with awareness of, ‘I am Shuddhatma,’ then it is not considered ego. What is the 2

gunadharma (intrinsic properties that have a specific function) of ego? It does not do anything at all, yet it only believes that ‘I did’. Ego is a subtle thing, actions are gross. How can a subtle thing perform gross action? Types of ego Questioner: Are there different kinds of egos? Dadashri: To refer to a relative thing as ‘I am’ is ego. Pride with three components, arrogance, jealousy, respect and disrespect – are all different words used at different times to explain the varying degrees of the ego. That is why the Gnanis have given them different names. There are two kinds of ego. One is lifeless (nirjeev) and the other is alive (sajeev). Akram’s mahatmas live their lives with the help of the lifeless (nirjeev discharging) ego. The egoism of doership (kartapanu) leaves; thereafter only the egoism of suffering (bhoktapanu) remains. When does ego leave? When you accept that ego is wrong then it will leave. Where March 2010

DADAVANI

there is conflict, you should understand that one’s own ego is verily wrong. If you understand this much then that ego will leave. How can one become completely egoless? When conviction is established completely that ‘I am Shuddhatma,’ and when continuous awareness is set then ego leaves, but after conviction also ego remains like a shadow; original ego leaves. Shadow like means dramatic ego. Ego in the Kramic path and the Akram path What does ego mean? It is that which runs far away from God. As the ego increases; words like obstinacy, pride, ego of doership (garva), arrogance are used to describe its intensity. Ego arises the moment one moves a little away from the Lord within—the Self. What is the Kramic path? In this path one is told: ‘Purify the ego.’ In this path one has to purify the ego that has become excessive. So he has to purify the ego gradually, a little at a time. And when the ego becomes completely pure then only he attains the Self. The unnatural (vibhavik) ego expresses as pride, deceit, hypocrisy, arrogance etc. These are all different forms of ego. A person may be earning a minimum wage but he walks around in fancy clothes. So people will comment, ‘He is a phony.’ He walks around pompously. It’s like a fox dressed up in tiger’s skin. Arrogant people do not have respect for others. They display arrogance and scorn in everything they do. If someone asks a man’s wife what he is like, she’ll say, ‘He is of no use at all.’ There are all unnatural forms of ego. You have to get rid of all of them. There are many difficulties in the Kramic path. One is doomed if he happens to meet with March 2010

temptation on this path. Our Akram path does not have such dangers. It is a path with security. It is a secure path. There is no problem even if you happen to meet people who tempt you on the way. The other person will become confused but you will not be affected. Karma chetna – Karmafada chetna After receiving Gnan from ‘us’, everyone still has the ego, but it is the discharging ego; it is nikali ego. What is the nikali ego like? It will comply. It will listen to You; it is not the foolish ego. Whereas the ego in the Kramic path says ‘I have to do this. I have to renounce this, etc.’ To renounce and to be naturally unattached are different states. The one who is naturally free and unattached to any specific object or person, does not even remember what he has renounced. What is natural renunciation? One forgets naturally and easily that which was renounced naturally and easily. If renunciation (tyaag) of smoking a bidi (hand-rolled cigarette) has happened to you as a natural process then the bidi will not come in your memory and if you had deliberately avoided smoking the bidi then you will keep remembering that, ‘I have renounced bidi.’ So the renunciation that simply is, as a natural state, is altogether a different thing. There is no ego of that renunciation (tyaag). But some people exercise the mad ego of having renounced something. Hey you! The renunciation has come into existence, and is working for you, so why don’t you remain straight and easygoing? Why do you keep babbling about what you have renounced? Why are you doing egoism of that? Renunciation which has happened naturally is considered very good. As many engaging situations that 3

DADAVANI

entangle—lafru—decrease, that many externally induced trouble (upadhi) decrease. And how is our path of moksha? It is Akram path, therefore let the past life entanglements be as they are, do not create new ones, and be done with the old ones; they too will leave when they will fall off on their own. In the Kramic path, the ego is a charge ego. Here, in the Akram path, the ego is discharge ego. The ego in the Kramic path binds karmas because the seeker believes he has renounced: ‘I have renounced this. I still need to renounce that…’ The fact is his renunciation is the effect of his previous life’s ego but by believing and saying this, he charges new karma. The Gnani Purush eliminates that which binds karmas. It is that simple! It is straightforward. Two paths for the ego Questioner: The bhaavna intent that we express (intent in discharge); it binds merit karma or demerit karma, so then whose intent is that? Dadashri: It is of the ego (ahamkar). The one who wants happiness has the intent (bhaavna) that if I do merit karma-good deeds- punyai then merit karma (punyai) will be bound for me. He wants happiness (sukha) but this intent of his does not materialize. And because of the beatings of ongoing egoism, and because he doesn’t have Gnan; not having understanding of by doing what he can attain happiness and by doing what he attains unhappiness; the intent of unhappiness starts to rise. It is worth making two paths for the ego: If you want to go to moksha, (attain liberation) you should come near me-to Me, to become free from the ego. The one who is 4

free from ego can make you free from ego. No one else can make you free from the ego (ahamkar). If you want worldly happiness then make the ego beautiful. People will say, ‘Chandubhai, What a wonderful human being!’ Everyone would say this. Such an ego is called a beautiful ego. Then you will get worldly happiness. Ugly ego – Beautiful ego Happiness can’t be attained by wrong egoism. Ego should be normal. It should be such that people find it acceptable. This means beautiful ego is needed. Is ugly ego good or is beautiful ego good? Questioner: Beautiful is good. Dadashri: Yes, beautiful ego is good. Ugly ego will say every step of the way, ‘Don’t you know? I don’t care for anybody!’ Why are you, who care for no one, acting mad? Who are you to care for no one? If the police arrest you now, you will wet your pants! Look, you should not talk crazy stuff like this, you should talk properly; you should talk in a way that people feel good. Does your brain fly off the handle or not? Do you behave and do what a buffalo’s brother does? Have you seen a buffalo’s brother or not? Hey! He will flip the opponent in a way that every part of his body is broken; ego should not be like that. Egoism means, one does something that makes him look crazy. The nature of the crazy ego Questioner: I did not understand the correct meaning of this. To do according to one’s will, is that called true ego? Dadashri: No, it is not about the determined will. Too many people do what they have determined to do according to their March 2010

DADAVANI

will. Egoism means he does something that is crazy and evident to all; that is called crazy ego. Proper worldly interaction is not seen. All these people do worldly interactions but none of them are called wrong, none of their acts are called wrong. But whatever is called crazy; will be declared as egoism by the people. That which is of a new order from that which is the world; and shows it is called ego. Questioner: Is one not informed about it? Dadashri: There is no awareness at all! Forget about the information, there is no awareness whatsoever! There is no awareness at all of the crazy words or acts that one does. Only then will such ego express. Fifty people are sitting here at ease, but the one who does something totally wrong, will be branded by the people immediately as, ‘the crazy egoist!’ There should be normality in worldly interactions vyavaharikta, that which is accepted by all. Whatever work you do, all the people will say, ‘Brother, you did good work.’ What type of ego should one have? Ego should be such that people accept it. There here is crazy ego and people do not like it. Questioner: I want to know more about crazy ego. Dadashri: Someone says, ‘I can blow off the whole mountain; that is the type of person I am.’ All of us will then say, ‘Is he crazy or what? What type of egoism is he doing?’ Questioner: Crazy. Dadashri: But we don’t call this type of ego as crazy ego. This was mentioned as an example. All these other talks here that, ‘I will do this and I will do that’ in a huff and puff March 2010

attitude, now he can’t do any of it and only the ego is speaking. These are all crazy egos that have been stocked and expressing only. The one who is able to do, he will not do such egoism at all. Questioner: But how can it be known that this is a crazy ego? Dadashri: Any ego that gives pain (dukha) is crazy ego. If someone tells me, ‘Dadaji, you have no sense’, I would understand; there my crazy ego will not arise. And pain will not come to Me at all! His ego will hurt him, how can it hurt me? Crazy ego exists everywhere, and it makes the owner wander down the skid row in intoxication. It needs to be identified and eradicated. Questioner: That intoxication of ego is greater then alcohol, it will not go down at all. Dadashri: Just as these sadhus—those who have renounced worldly life, decide that as the Lord Mahavira had said that ‘Vank jaday pachhima—after I am gone, the followers will turn out to be obstinate and unaware,’ therefore, I must be careful not to be obstinate or crass. For us here in Akram Vignan, we do not have any concern with obstinacy or crassness. But, we should be very aware of the interference of this ego. The crazy ego exists for sure. We have to keep constant awareness on that ego. Does that crazy ego flare up even now or not? Is it still there? Questioner: Now it is not that much. But there is some lying there, not much. Dadashri: No. It would be still lying around there assuming a small shape. It will not take much time to flare up to a huge size 5

tomorrow. You should eradicate it from its very roots, and then only the work is done.

other as the guilty person and protect its own self!

Questioner: How can it be uprooted? By doing bhaavna—deep inner intent?

To see the faults of others is crazy ego

Dadashri: No. Just keep the awareness. Make efforts in some other direction. If he moves in any other crazy or wrong direction then you should tell him—the file one, ‘You are being obstinate and crass.’ There is crazy ego in everybody. That crazy ego shows the wrong as the right to the one who means well and wants to do right. If you have six or seven files at home the crazy ego will show wrong about all seven of them. What vitarag science says is that you are to win over the prakruti (the non-Self complex) of all seven of them. What does winning over mean? It means that they all become very happy with you. You win over them in a way that they do not feel any hurt. You do not have to win over the world outside, win over the seven files that you have at home. The world has already been conquered. You won’t achieve anything by leaving behind your files and running away to become an ascetic. That file will have to be won. That file has come for you only. Crazy ego will do very bad things. It won’t allow one to understand anything at all. It will keep on doing all the wrong things. It will see file’s faults and will see the self as clean that ‘I am very wise’ and will protect one’s own faults. It will tell the self that, ‘No, you are not at fault.’ Thus, it will protect its own self. It is the lawyer itself, it is the judge itself and it is also the plaintiff itself, now tell me, what will be the condition? What will be the judgment if you are the plaintiff, the lawyer and the judge? And here the ego will see the 6

In the Kramic path (the traditional step by step path to liberation), one is not able to see one’s own faults at all. People on this path will even admit that they are aware that they have a lot of faults, yet they are unable to see them. If they confess this, then I would concede that they are indeed worthy of liberation, but if a person tells me that he sees only a few of his own faults, then such a person has a long way to go. How can you tell me that you can only see a handful of your faults when you are saturated with them? Do you think that the faults that you see are the only faults that you have? Krupadudev has said: ‘If these mistakes of mine are not acknowledged, then how will I attain salvation?’ People keep just singing this, that’s all. ‘I am a vessel of infinite faults Oh Lord.’ This too people keep singing. No one has been able to see his own fault. When you begin to see your own faults, you have finally understood the essence of Krupadudev’s dharma. Today you see your faults, but tomorrow you will not see the same faults but new ones and the day after, you will see newer ones. That is when you can be assured that you understand and are following Krupadudev’s dharma. You have not understood anything until then. The stock (karma caused in past life) is such that one is not able to see one’s own faults. One is not able to see the tile or the bottom of the entire complex. If it is seen even once, then it is done. Thereafter that crazy ego will not arise. It has to be identified and understood. March 2010

DADAVANI

The nature of ego is to do the business of keep seeing those past faults. Questioner: That talk had come out that on one side the fault keeps on happening and pratikraman keeps on happening and again the fault keeps on happening, so you said just now that seeing the fault is the business of egoism only. So is ego the root cause of faults happening continuously? Dadashri: This is the craziness of ego only. The seeing of faults of others is the echo of our own fault only. The biggest fault is of ours only. That is called crazy ego. ‘Mine is correct’ – that verily is ego When you come to believe that it is only your fault when matabheda (divisiveness due to differences in opinions) arises, then you will come to the point of freedom. There is no other solution. To undertake a solution is our secret egoism. Why do you have to look for the solution? It is one’s egoism when one believes and holds, ‘this of mine is correct, and his is wrong.’ In worldly interactions whatever is held to be ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ is all egoism. Nevertheless, what is right and what is wrong in worldly interactions? Anything that hurts humans or any living being, is wrong. That which harms worldly interactions, harms society, harms living beings, harms small living beings or other living beings, is all considered wrong by us. Besides this, there is no such thing as ‘right’ or ‘wrong,’ everything is ‘correct’ and as it should be. Each and every human being has his or her own ‘drawing’ or perspective. However in the final analysis all are ‘drawings,’ and these drawings are March 2010

imaginary, not real. You have to understand once and for all what this ‘drawing’ (the relative view) is! Once you understand the totality of this ‘drawing’, your love towards it will disappear. Insistence through one’s ego Nobody’s is wrong in this world. Everything is a temporary truth, so what is the point of insistence? Nevertheless if the other person insists, then I will let go. All you can do is to express your intent bhaavna, by saying, ‘Brother, this is how it is,’ and beyond that there should be no insistence. The one who has no insistence about what he knows, is mukta liberated, is he not? Questioner: Which knowledge are you referring to here? Dadashri: To insist on your knowledge means is when you explain your knowledge to someone and he responds, ‘No, what you are saying is wrong!’ And then you insist on what you know. That is called insisting without letting go pakkad. All you have to do is to say once, ‘Brother, try and understand it once more.’ And then he will reply, ‘No, I have understood. Your talk is dead wrong.’ Then you have to let go of the insistence. That is what ‘we—the Gnani Purush’ are begging to say. It is the biggest ego to say, ‘I will not agree’. What day is it today? Questioner: Friday. Dadashri: If I were to tell someone it is Friday, he may say, ‘No, it’s Saturday,’ I would then say, ‘Why don’t you check it again!’ But even then if he insists that it is Saturday, then I would let go and not continue to insist. This is not only in worldly interactions but it is also applicable to Gnan. Why bang 7

DADAVANI

your head? You can bang your head all night but the other person is like a brick wall. When he does not let go, it is better for you to do so. You will not become free as long as you have an ego about not wanting to give up. ‘I am right,’ that ego also will have to be removed Ego will always in the business of avoiding looking bad in the eyes of others. When the world is held as ‘it is wrong’ aversion (dwesh) happens and when the world is held as ‘it is right’ then attachment (raag) happens. ‘We—the Gnani Purush’ just simply know (jaaniye) that ‘this is wrong’, and that is verily the ‘Gnan’! ‘Mine is correct,’ is a kind of ego, and that too will have to go, will it not? Now if someone else is talking out there, then it will remain at least that much present within that ‘this ours is correct’, ‘this which we are following is correct’ after attaining this Gnan. The Lord has said that, this is ego. This ego also will have to be removed. But on the basis of Akram Gnan this ego of ours, is lifeless. So it will dissipate some time or another. The ego is alive in Kramic path, and this ego in the Akram path is lifeless. Everything is dramatic. Anger-pride-deceit-greed, all are dramatic. Crazy ego will bite the nimit If a train is stuck, some foolish one will comment, ‘The railway people are useless. They should all be fired!’ You foolish people, who are you condemning? The workers and the train are both vitarags (they are impartial). Nevertheless, the ego will not refrain from playing its role. We have become free from all such misunderstanding after Gnan. Outside there are storms of misunderstanding. When 8

the gutters become full with water, people complain and curse the employees of the municipality, ‘You people do not clean out the gutters!’ If a housewife buys lentils, which do not cook well, she curses the grocer and if it comes to her mind, she will even curse the farmers! She attacks so many people this way. If you tell her to check with the neighbor, she will find that her neighbor does not have any problems with her lentils! However, she has a habit of attacking and accusing people. If her cooking turns out good, she will tell everyone in the house. That is ego. Attacking is also ego. This ego says, ‘I am something.’ If you ask, ‘What are you?’ She will say, ‘I don’t exactly know, but I know I am something!’ At Diwali the host serves snacks with good intent (bhaav) but a guest may say with resentment, ‘I don’t care for this. I don’t like it’; that is an ugly ego. On this auspicious day of Diwali, if he takes just a small amount of that snack, he will not hurt the host. Then his ego will appear good. ‘We’ would drink even poison if it was served to ‘us’ with good intention. Yes, ‘we’ have solutions for everything. What is Akram Gnani? Akram Gnani’s ego is very pleasant and wonderful. He would sit with you but He would also sit with the lowest of people. He would not look ugly or out of place anywhere. He would always look wonderful. Gnanis of the Kramic path however, will not visit those who are inferior to them. They will say, ‘I will do whatever I have to but I will not go there.’ Their ego is ugly. All you have to care for is make sure that the ego appears beautiful. How beautiful is Dada’s ego when He comes here. Your ego March 2010

DADAVANI

too, should look just like His and then you will see what a wonderful state that is! Ego of ‘I-ness’: Hoonpanu Ego is blind and therefore it will mess up everything. By nature ego is blind. It sees a little through the eyes of the intellect and follows the advice of the intellect. Ego approves everything suggested by the intellect. The intellect is the prime minister and ego is the president. In a way it is blind and cannot see. The intellect will say, ‘let us do this’ and the ego will go ahead and sign. But the ego is: ‘I am the doer’. Yes, that’s all it is; egoism of ‘Iness-hoonpanu’, it is called the state of ‘Iness-hoonpad’. Only after the ego dissolves it becomes possible to preserve that which is beneficial to the self, and to understand that which is beneficial to the self. Otherwise, as long as the ego exists, one remains blind. Ego should be such that ‘jaanpanu the state of ‘knowing’’ increases. Instead the ego is such that it brings veils (avaran) over the ‘knowing’. One becomes blind because of ego, and loses the state of ‘knowing.’ Such ego does a lot of harm. What will the ego (ahamkar) not do? All this has arisen due to ego only. And when ego dissolves there is freedom mukti! ‘I am something’ – that is crazy ego The ego should be wonderful, people should like it and it should be malleable. You should ask the ego, ‘Show me your record book. Show me instances where people have given you respect. Show me where you have suffered insults. What kind of happiness have you received? Has anyone ever held you in high regard?’ His father and brothers will also say, ‘He is worthless!’ So ask the ego, ‘Have March 2010

you won anyone’s heart?’ Even if one were special to just a few people, the ego would be considered good, but wherever he goes, people think, ‘It would be nice if he goes away.’ That is an ugly ego. People may not say anything to his face, but in their minds they say, ‘What is it to me? He will meet his death through his bad deeds.’ Everyone thinks of their own benefit except the Gnani Purush; the Gnani is the only one who will tell it to you straight. The ego that begets you a hearty welcome time after time is an ego that is wise. But what use is the crazy ego that will beget you a hearty welcome the first time, but on subsequent occasions people will call you useless and tell you to get out? You can tell the foolish ego, ‘Do you get any respect? Why are you being egotistical? You do not have 1300 queens, do you? You have no wealth or property, do you? So, what is it that makes you so foolish?’ A person has an ego of ‘I am something!’ Yes, but what? This very ego makes people miserable. When you look at all the stages of spiritual development, starting from the first through the twelfth, you will understand that the ego has caused nothing but misery. Such an ego is a crazy ego. It makes a person believe he is superior and yet others around him will not think so. That is a crazy ego; it is an ugly ego. The Chakravarti emperors used to have an ego too, but it was a malleable ego. One could mold it anyway one wanted. People accept such ego; it is a wise ego, whereas the other is crazy and foolish ego. We can ask this ego, ‘When have you ever been at peace?’ Where will you find people who are thrilled to see you and welcome you warmly telling you they could not do without 9

DADAVANI

you? Instead, people will say, ‘Everything was fine until he showed up!’ You have suffered endless insults. What good is such an ego? Why would you protect such an ugly ego? Why would you take sides with it? ‘Very crazy ego is verily a big enemy’ People will not associate with you if they feel they will lose their reputation. ‘What would be my worth?’ they fear. This kind of ego is crazy and foolish. Before Gnan I too had an ego, but it was a wise ego. I was dear to several people. And there would be at least four cars parked in front of my home everyday. But even then the ego used to bother me and I felt that if the ego were to leave, then I would be the emperor of this world. The ego should be beautiful. What is the point of having a beautiful body and an ugly ego? You can make do with an ugly body but the ego should not be ugly. Many people have ugly faces, but their ego is so beautiful that people will welcome them with open arms, ‘Welcome sir. Come in.’ What is the need for the ego? How can we even keep it alive? The one that has made you miserable for infinite lives is nothing but an enemy. Why must you abandon your position as the ruler of the world and delve into petty things like ‘this is mine’ and ‘this is yours’?

goal by surrendering to the Gnani. A wise ego will not try to enforce its own wisdom whereas a foolish ego will criticize everything. Therefore, you either understand this fact or remain obedient and subservient (aadhin) to the Gnani. Man does not have the power it takes to comply with a foolish ego, so the best way then is to remain under the guidance of a Gnani Purush with humility. The foolish ego is so unpredictable that it will listen to the Gnani for thirty days and will discard his words and instructions on the thirty first day! The sicker the ego, the greater is the problem. There is no way out other than to surrender to the Gnani. What if the craziness of the ego arises? Once a person meets a Gnani Purush and if his craziness arises due to his ego then he would lose the path of moksha forever, would he not? Otherwise do not come here at all, remain vitarag, stay away. There is not too much risk involved for the one who speaks from a distance however if he speaks negatively when he remains close to the Gnani, then it is nothing but a crazy ego. This crazy ego can ruin one’s own gain. Compassion of the Gnani

The heavier the ego, the greater is the problem

You are with me and when your fever goes away shortly, then You are with Me for sure. This is a path of lift. However if you become unyielding and obstinate with Me, then things will be ruined for you. ‘We’ do not have any quality that would push you away from ‘us’. It is different if anything in me is wrong and unyielding, and therefore your action becomes inappropriate. But one-sided inflexible obstinacy should not be there.

This ego has created nothing but a mess. You can undo the mess and accomplish your

The ego is a crazy thing; you should not accept it even if someone were to give it to you for free. You have to remain in the Self, you have to become the Self and the moment the crazy ego arises, throw it out.

tell yourself, ‘Do you not remain straightforward here too? I will have to fire you otherwise.’ Intellect will bother you however this Akram will protect you all the way. ‘We’ protect even those who may have thrown insults at us, because whatever insults he throws at us are not due to his own free will. He is possessed by karma. We understood that this person is absolutely correct then we are totally straightforward, nothing else and this other person keeps obstinacy even then we let it go, that too with understanding. We know that he remains obstinate because he is weak and does not have the energy (shakti). We keep compassion, that too with understanding. ‘Do whatever you can’ – what kind of ego is that? This world is so tough that it can harass even Lord Mahavira a lot. Even the Lord had met such questioners asking him, ‘Why did you do such a thing?’ Oh, they would ask me too! This is because he has the right. Any person can ask anything. One can act crazy too! One will tell us too that, ‘You do not have any sense.’ Then I would say, ‘I did not have that from the beginning, you just found out today, but I know from the beginning.’ Now he is speaking on own responsibility. But we have to explain him and turn him because he becomes responsible for committing a grave fault. Just as when a dog barks a lot, it cools down when you pamper it, similarly when these humans bark, they cool down when we pamper them. When a person is very angry then only he will do such a thing, no? He does such a thing out of misery, does he not? Will any person do angerpride-deceit-greed kashaya with anybody if March 2010

he is happy? Will a happy person do kashaya with other person? But when one is in pain and misery he does kashaya with other person so I would calm him down and then again I would make him break his viradhana (to actively negate and become averse to another human being). This is because he has not done viradhana with understanding, he has done so due to lack of understanding. All these faults have happened due to lack of understanding only. The human beings of the current times are such that they have not done a single fault through understanding; indeed they are the best of the humans. Only the understanding (samajan) is scarce. And in old times people used to commit faults through understanding. Their ego was like, ‘I know, I understand that you are Mahavira. You are the Lord of entire universe, I know that too. Go ahead and do what you can to defeat me!’ Such human beings used to be there who committed faults deliberately with understanding. They are called unusual human beings. Is it a task of a little child to commit such a big fault with such a great One? No. So then, such a person will go straight to the seventh hell from here. From there he will go to the celestial world and then he will come here and attain the religion of vitarags and go to moksha. This is because he fought with vitarags, didn’t he? The Lord had said that if you want to fight then fight with a vitarag but do not swear bad words. If you wish to fight, then fight with a vitarag. Fight really good, beat each other too, then you will bind account with them. However do not fight with these people at all. If you will fight with an American then you will have to go back there again. You will have to marry a Mary and if Mary divorces you, then what will be your condition? So this is how all this! One cannot understand these 11

drifting trends of karma and where it will lead one to, in the various realms of existence. Loss is one’s own only, through the crazy ego This crazy ego will destroy him; it will cause a lot of damage to his own self only. And the poor people at home suffer a lot from the disturbance. That’s why the women used to say that, ‘We are the wise ones from other families and that’s why the households are running well.’ Mother (Zaverba, Dadashri’s mother) used to say this. What all the women are saying is that all the men are crazy and women are wise and that is why the homes are running well, they were saying this. Crazy ego. You have tremendous wealth within and there is extreme egoism, and this egoism has created an unnatural state. When my ego dissolved I realized what craziness used to be there! That hidden ego identified My brother Manibhai was like a lion, if he walked out, a hundred people will scatter around from fear; scatter around after looking at his eyes. In those days how much power was there? I too, used to fear him. Such power he had! A man with tremendous power! A grand sight to behold! All his mannerisms were grand! Now tell me, will there be power in this mind? Won’t it be intoxicated with power? Thus, my older brother was very egoistic. Outsiders used to say that he is egoistic and used to call me as the wise one. But what my older brother used to tell me? ‘I haven’t seen an egoistic person like you in the entire Gujarat.’ So I asked him, ‘For what reason are you calling me egoistic? Where do you see the egoism in me?’ Then he said, ‘Your egoism is a disguised egoism. I have 12

understood it well.’ Yes, there was a deep knot of egoism within me! He used to tell me but I was unable to believe it. I said, ‘He is the one with egoism.’ Then I searched and I realized that there was a very huge ego. I learned about this deep tuber of ego later on; after he passed away. When the tuber of my ego sprouted, I realized that, O ho ho! Manibhai was telling the truth! Then the egoism started to bite a lot. This bite I could not tolerate. How can it be tolerated? Later on, that tuber of ego went away too! There is no telling when the ego will go crazy If you ‘saw’ it wrong, you will get the ‘wrong’ punishment. The loss that you face is proportionate to the profit you made. So this world isn’t completely wrong! And if someone knows how to collect and extract profit, he can remain in shubha beneficial and helpful dhyan meditation. But even then, he can’t collect the total profit. Man cannot avoid the ashubha harmful and inauspicious. Therefore, when one attains the shuddha pure state then only everything can get cleared. Otherwise, clearance won’t happen until then. This is because it can’t be predicted when the ego will start acting crazy at anytime. It is absorbed in intoxication madamast, filled with ego of ‘I-ness’ mada and that very form of egoism can’t be predicted when it will go totally crazy and haywire. If someone instigates even a bit, it can act crazy in any manner. And if a king is instigated, he will say, ‘Burn them all right now.’ And at that moment he doesn’t realize what the result of this act will be. The nature of the ego is that it will use up all that is in its power and influence. What will a brother by birth, decide within? He will make a firm opinion that, ‘this March 2010

DADAVANI

brother of mine is the type who will straighten out only when for once and all he is destroyed flat out.’ Even the brother by birth begins to get ready to hurt the one who is the unyielding egoistic! The son-in-laws will mindfully await thinking that he is exercising his egoism now but one day we will put him in place. They will go on digging from all four sides; dig and cut down the tree so it will fall down on the ground! They won’t leave him alone. If you throw your ego weight around a lot, your brothers will say, ‘It will be good if he gets the run around, he will get straightened out. Otherwise, he is not going to straighten out.’ So, what do the brothers say about the one with very heavy ego? They have this inner intent of making their brother with the ego suffer a heavy fall. This egoism has such bad qualities that not only the brothers will say this but even the wife will think in her mind that he has gone up too high, ‘Oh God, give him such a push that he will straighten out.’ Now tell me, what quality of egoism is this that one can’t get along with the members of own family. No one likes such crazy ego. If it is somewhat proper, somewhat normal, it may be useful! And what is there that necessitates such egoism? You don’t have the kingdom….oh, even the comfort of showering in the bathroom may not be there, and you are doing egoism here unnecessarily! If there are fifty people in this big room; they won’t but clash. This is because the egoism won’t but burst! The one with the short fuse will be the first one to burst. And look; here there is no crazy ego; therefore even if someone has kicked him, nothing affects him! Your talk may be right but if it is not understood, then it will give rise to clash. If it is understood, there cannot be any clash! And March 2010

within all this, one’s egoism is in operation. Everyone’s egoism is different, is it not? Straightforward ego will arise within a person who is straightforward. Obstinate ego will arise in the obstinate one. Ego is of only one nature, but its colors appear in many different shades. This world would not have been so mad, if such ego was absent. All the pain dukha exist due to the ego. There is no harm in continuing to do the work, but egoism creates unnecessary storms. Worthless crazy ego of pride I am talking about the times before the enlightenment-Gnan. At that time, my ‘brainintellect’ used to work well. I had a systemhabit of giving advice to people. That meant being quite free and easy to give advice to others, and people used to feed my pride, and I used to eat that too! They would come and tell me, ‘this troublesome thing has happened to me, and I am in that trouble etc,’ and so I used to tell them how to use a loophole and get out through a back-door. I used to give wrong advice to people. I would show people the way to escape from their income tax crimes; I would give them advice and make them free. But that was equivalent to help them leave from the ‘back-door’. I understood this later that I had helped them leave from the back-door. I misused my intellect and helped people to escape from back-door and I had shown them how to become free from income tax. I had asked them to leave from backdoor. What benefit I got from this? They give me respect (maan). I was hungry for the respect. I was not only hungry for respect (maan) but I was a beggar. Just as a beggar keeps asking for alms, similarly I would beg 13

DADAVANI

for respect! Yes, many such mistakes had happened! Did we have a law office? Lawyers do what they do for money; I used to do that to feed the hunger for respect. It is all one and the same, isn’t it? Everything is lawyering only, isn’t it? If one person is beating the other person, in this if we try to explain to the one who is beating and turn him around, this is considered saving the other person. This way this person will not lose and that person will not lose, this way they will be free. If we take fees from this person and if we do not take fees from other person, then is it considered saving anyone? And whoever came asking for help, even if a thief came asking for help then I had helped the thief too. He would say, ‘Yes Dada, you got my work done’, he would say that. Only this much was the hunger of the hungry one within for the respect. Questioner: Respect (maan)! Dadashri: If someone were to satisfy this much hunger of the ego then all his work is done. I would take all the responsibility. He would know that I am like a God. He would understand that I had done all this for his unhappiness. I was not doing anything for my self. One should have at least this much ego. Otherwise nobody would do anything good at all. And I too had the ego, that is why I was doing. Very heavy ego. If someone addresses me as Ambalalbhai and next day he addresses me as Ambalal, then I would not be able to sleep the whole night. I had all that kind of ego. Crazy ego; worthless ego. That wealth of the worthless 14

ego never had fallen short. The wounds of the crazy ego through speech Egoism eats up all the energies (shakti) and that gives you the beatings in life. As a human being, if one does not interfere in the present flow of life, it would run very smoothly. However, unfortunately one does nothing but interfere constantly from moment he wakes up. If one does not interfere in the slightest in the present circumstance then one will have the energy and reign of God. Instead one interferes and gives rise to one’s own reign. Thereafter, ‘Why did you do this way?’ ‘This is like this…’ Hey mooah (the one who is dying by the second)! Why don’t you die with ease? (Whatever you do, you are dying, so why not take it easy?) Why not wash your face and drink a nice cup of tea quietly? The wife who is woken up from her nap, complains, ‘You don’t even rock the baby. He has been crying for so long.’ The husband will retaliate, ‘Did I have to rock him when he was in your belly? Now that he is out, you have to keep him.’ Now tell me, what is this woman likely to do if she is not submissive? That which interferes is the craziness of the ego Questioner: When you say that one should not interfere, does that mean that one has to leave everything haphazard as it is in the home, even when there are many people in the household? Dadashri: You should neither leave things as they are nor should you interfere. Questioner: How would that be possible? March 2010

DADAVANI

Dadashri: How can you interfere? Interference is called the craziness of the ego.

Questioner: If the ego gets hurt, I will feel it, no?

Questioner: If work needs to be done in the home, can we tell him to do it?

Dadashri: Ego gets hurt? If ego gets hurt, that would be good; it will get lessened. As it gets hurt and hurt again, will it not get exhausted? Do you want to keep the ego fresh? Fresh? Do you have much need for the ego?

Dadashri: Yes, but there are ways of saying it. Questioner: You mean we should not become emotional when we say it? Dadashri: At other times, do you not speak sweetly to him that even before you are finished he understands? Questioner: What should I do about the strong and abrasive speech? Dadashri: Harsh language in itself is interference! If your speech is harsh then you have to use additional words like, ‘I request you…,’ or ‘I am asking you to please do this much.’ All you have to do is use such words before you proceed. Questioner: When we say, for example, ‘Hey, take this plate from here,’ …the force behind the way we say it… Dadashri: When you say it with authority, that is when you are interfering. Questioner: So we must speak in a low volume voice. Dadashri: It would be fine to speak in a low volume voice and tone, but some people will still create interference even if they use a gentle tone. Instead you should say, ‘I am requesting you to please do this much for me!’ Include a few extra words.

Questioner: It stays with us all the time, no? Dadashri: Yes, it stays near and near. It doesn’t move away anywhere else! All this is because of it. There was one man who had a French cut hairstyle. He used to keep his hair this way up to here. Once, the haircutting salon person cut it a little more, so he got angry and gave him two-four slaps! ‘Hey, if it was cut a little more, what damage did it cause?’ But look what the ego does! Do you have such an ego? Does it create storms? Is it wise? Someone has wise ego and someone has crazy ego! They are encamped on the basement of egoism. They call people as ‘senseless’. As if he is a sack of sense! Such a person will totally lose it and a person can become like a stone (crass)! No one should be called senseless; there is the Self in him. Therefore, how much liability is there, if one is not aware of this? This egoism is called a chronic disease. One can recover from it if one stays with Me, otherwise, people would make this disease even more chronic and worse.

Egoism is a chronic disease

‘I am the only one that has any sense’ – that is also craziness

What happens to you if someone swears bad words at you?

If someone says, ‘You have no sense’, does it have an effect on you?

March 2010

15

DADAVANI

Questioner: Of course, it will have effect.

tell me anything; my ego was like that. But, now I adjust everywhere.

Dadashri: Why? Are you a sack of sense?

Dadashri: Does the feeling, ‘I am clever’ remain?

Questioner: I am not, therefore there is effect. Dadashri: And if someone asks, ‘You are a collector of which district?’ Do you then say that I am a collector? Questioner: I am not a collector so how can I say?

Questioner: Yes, it does. Dadashri: That is the biggest of all diseases. Questioner: But now that belief is not there at all. Dadashri: Nevertheless, do you believe it occasionally?

Dadashri: Here, about the collector, you have no effect; and why is there effect over there (no sense)? You have believed inside that I am somebody, with sense.

Questioner: The belief that, ‘I am clever’ is never there but I was careful about someone telling me off about something.

Questioner: The ego gets wounded

Dadashri: Wasn’t there something like ‘Not getting under pressure from anybody’?

there. Dadashri: The ego within who holds, ‘I have some sense’ gets wounded. If he goes to sell this sack of sense in the market, he won’t get even four annas (one quarter). This is because everyone is a sack of sense! Who will buy? If someone says something offensive to you, immediately the sense, ‘I am something’, will arise. The belief is there that, ‘I am the one with some sense’ from the beginning. What do you say? Does your ego believe something like that? Questioner: Yes, correct. Right from the beginning I believe that I am the one with intellect, that’s how I am. How can anyone tell me off about anything! Dadashri: This happens on certain days only, no? Questioner: When I had not taken Dada’s Gnan, I had this belief that no one can 16

Questioner: Yes, that was there. Dadashri: The fact that, ‘I am something’ was there, is itself a disease. And the clashes happen because of this disease only. This disease does not leave even after Gnan is taken. Therefore, if this disease is still there, it should be eradicated. Otherwise even after getting this Gnan this disease will be there. Later on, if we tell ‘him’, he will understand and will get rid of this disease slowly. But if he were not told, the disease will linger on in him. This disease should be ousted. Signs of ‘I am something’ Questioner: What are the signs of this ‘I am something’ disease? Dadashri: It has all too many signs, all the signs as in an ignorant person. He does what he wants (dharyoo karvoo), and does such and such, when respect is given he feels March 2010

DADAVANI

delighted. Most of them are diseases of these types; they have many signs. If he doesn’t feel bitter when respect is given; he won’t be able to remain in Gnan. A man with Gnan will get tired when he is given respect; tired as to whom this respect is being given to? Respect is being given to Chandulal, what to do about Chandulal? Therefore, one should be very careful about this disease. ‘I understand’ – that is also craziness If a senior person is there even then the ego says, ‘You don’t understand, you don’t have sense.’ Here comes the one who wants to measure his intelligence! How can anyone speak like that? Then there will be clashes only, no? But one should not speak such hurtful worlds like, ‘You do not have sense.’ An ordinary person will take on the responsibility by speaking such thing because of lack of understanding. But the one who has understanding will not take on such a responsibility. When the other person speaks negative then he will speak positive. Other person may ask anything because of lack of understanding but you cannot speak negative or wrong, because you are responsible for that. ‘You don’t understand’, you cannot speak like that too. You can say that, ‘Brother, at least think! You think at least a little.’ If you say, ‘No one has any sense,’ does it mean all are stupid? Do people speak like this or not? Questioner: They do. This intellectual people speak in this way only that, ‘This person does not have understanding.’ Dadashri: Yes, people would speak like that, ‘You will not understand’, to say such thing is the biggest gnanavaran that which veils the knowledge of the Self, karma. You March 2010

cannot say that, ‘You will not understand’, but you should say, ‘I will explain to you’. If you say that, ‘You won’t understand’, then it will wound the heart of the opposite person. The ego (ahamkar) is such a thing. What does a volt power of four hundred volts tell you? ‘Do Not Touch, Danger’. Similarly, ego is a dangerous thing. It is like four hundred volts. Do not play with it, do not touch it; do not harass it. What will be the result of irritating it? Questioner: Clash, clash, clash! Dadashri: Clash! And it will bite you like a snake. Just like a snake hisses and bites, no? Humans will bite in a different way, but bite they will! ‘I will see to that’ is crazy ego Questioner: As an example, I have a pending file with the income tax. Now, the income tax officer does not have this knowledge, so he is egoistic. Now, as a result of such ego, can he harm me? Dadashri: No, he can’t harm you if you don’t answer him with your ego. Questioner: I don’t even go to him. There is no need for me to go to him but this is a routine recurring file. Dadashri: That is not a problem. Questioner: But if he is an egoistic officer, can he not hurt me? Dadashri: He doesn’t have the power to defecate, what can he do to you then? He can do something to you when you say that I will take care of such officers, I will take them on, and take them to task. Questioner: No one will do such a 17

DADAVANI

thing. Dadashri: Yes, if you are natural and humble, then nothing will happen to you. If you are not pushing him around, then vyavasthit (scientific circumstantial evidence) will not change. That poor man has no independent energy at all! One cannot speak ‘Who has the capacity and the energy?’ Questioner: On one hand you are saying that he has no energy to defecate and on the other hand you are saying that he has ego. Dadashri: If you push him around, he has the energy to retaliate. So you should not throw the words around. In the past I used to do so much insulting, because of egoism I used to say that no one is capable of doing anything in the world, who has the power? Now, I have stopped saying such words! What happens when one says this? It will offend some celestial deity’s mind that, ‘Oh, he is talking about power, now I will show him off.’ He will say this. It is the same as irritating the others. One shouldn’t say such things. Questioner: So then, no interference in my scientific circumstantial evidences happens, unless I irritate him? Dadashri: No, if you don’t do anything to the ego of the other person, no one will interfere with you. What concern do you have with the ego of anyone else? Nevertheless, I used to say this a lot. Oh, I was in so much ignorance that I used to say, ‘Who has the power? There is no power in the world that can do anything!’ But later it was realized that if the deities hear this they will feel, ‘What this stupid person is mouthing 18

off?’ this is all egoism. Wherever you see, in the celestial world too, there is egoism. Everywhere, life is there because of egoism, and the one with the heavy ego will not but become more egoistic upon hearing such words. Therefore, one shouldn’t say anything. Remain humble; if you remain in humility, no one will bother you. ‘I did’ and ‘I will do it’ – that is also crazy ego There was a mendicant who was saying, ‘It will happen if I do it, no?’ I said, ‘Why don’t you do it then?’ He then said, ‘It is my intention, I will do it.’ ‘Do it then!’ ‘For infinite life times, so many chovisies (Succession of twenty-four Tirthankaras in one era of Timecycle) have passed and you are still wandering around here, and if you are the doer, why don’t you get it done? Hey, you don’t have the power to defecate, what is it that you are going to do? Why are you doing egoism unnecessarily?’ Everything that he is speaking is known as egoism. ‘I did something and I will do it’ – to say this is known as double egoism. Crazy ego creates obstructions Every spoken word carries danger, so remain silent if you do not know how to say it. Especially in matters of religion, it is very dangerous. That other danger in worldly matters may vanish with ease. Obstructions to Gnan (knowledge) and darshan (vision) results when one misspeaks in matters of religion and, ‘You do not understand anything here, and I only have the correct understanding.’ Or if someone is being impeded in his attempts to attain Atmagnan, then these obstructions will be created for the March 2010

DADAVANI

one who creates the obstructions. If someone says, ‘The Gnani Purush has come, let us go see Him.’ And at this time if you say, ‘huh, I have seen many such Gnanis, do not waste my time.’ This is the obstruction for you. Now human beings have the habit of saying something or the other. If on the other hand, you have the deep desire to meet a Gnani but your circumstances are such that you cannot go, then your obstruction is broken. The creator of the obstruction is doing so without understanding that he is causing the obstruction. Some say, ‘Such Akram Gnan, how can it ever be? How can one attain moksha in one hour?’ Such talk immediately creates an obstruction. One can never say what will not happen in this world. So this world is not such that it can be measured by the intellect. This is because what has happened, this Akram Vignan, is indeed a fact. Very specific obstructions have fallen for Self-realization. This is the final station on the path of liberation. The one whose obstructions for meeting an indirect (paroksha) source of liberation are broken continues to have obstructions for the direct (pratyaksha). And therefore such persons will only meet the indirect. And there are very many obstructions for meeting the direct source of liberation. Breaking of these obstructions to the direct source results in the work of infinite life times being done directly. Protection of the Ego Questioner: You said that speech comes out through the ego. Dadashri: It is like this, there is nothing wrong with speaking; speech is a code word. It gets expressed and the sounds come out, but you should not protect or defend (rakshan) speech. March 2010

Questioner: Does ‘not protecting speech’ mean that one should not feel, ‘I am right in what I said?’ Dadashri: ‘I am right’ is the protection (rakshan). There is nothing wrong if there is no protection. It will not hurt anyone. When you protect your ego, then it hurts the other person. A little child will not feel hurt even if I were to spank him a lot, but if you were to merely tap him in anger it will make him cry profusely. Therefore, the child does not get upset because of physical pain but because his ego is hurt. The scripture writers have said that the ego is such an attribute that it makes everyone completely blind. It creates enmity even among brothers. It will make one think and wish for financial ruin of his own brother; even a father will wish that his son be reduced to nothing. What damage can the ego not do? Therefore, one should recognize and understand, ‘What is the significance of this ego within, as far as my welfare is concerned?’ Questioner: But do we not need the ego to do our work? Dadashri: The ego to do the work is always there. Who says no to that ego? But you should recognize and have the understanding of the ego that has caused so much havoc and thereafter you will have no attraction or love for it. Crazy ego shoots up against ego Questioner: What should I do when the other person does not improve, no matter how hard I try? Dadashri: One has not improved 19

DADAVANI

himself and he tries to improve others – instead it only leads to the other person becoming spoiled even more. The moment one tries to improve the other person, the other person becomes worse. What happens when the one trying to improve others is spoiled himself? The easiest thing is to improve the self. If you haven’t improved yourself and you try to improve others, then it is meaningless. Until you improve your ‘self,’ your words will fall on deaf ears and bounce back; if you say, ‘Don’t do it like this,’ then the other person will say, ‘Go away. I will do it exactly like that!’ You have just made him worse! There is no need of ego in this at all. If you try to get your work done through ego and intimidation, the other person will get even more aggravated. People will always be sincere to the one who does not have an ego; there is morality with such a one. We should not have ego; it hurts everyone. Even a small child will become obstinate if you call him ‘stupid’ or ‘senseless’ or ‘an idiot’! But if you tell him, ‘Son, you are a very good boy,’ he will immediately do what you ask of him. The moment you recognize that ‘ego is harmful,’ everything will become straightforward. It is not worth protecting the ego; the ego itself is such that it will naturally protect itself. Protection of one’s own self is crazy ego It is a grave mistake to protect anything in the front of the Gnani Purush. Protecting one’s self is considered the craziest intellect. Gnani Purush, who does not have any attachment or abhorrence (raag-dwesh), are you trying to show that you are correct to Him? 20

Questioner: I do not answer and when I do, you become angry. Dadashri: You are the only one who saw anger in Gnani Purush. No one has ever seen it. How utterly foolish is that! Gnani Purush does not have any anger. What kind of eyes do you have? Gnani Purush’s words are strong, how can He have any anger? One cannot be called a Gnani if there is anger in him. One who has anger, he is called an animal. You did not even recognize whether this is anger or what? It is a crime to protect one’s self. That is considered swachhand self guided undertaking; it is considered over-wiseness. If swachhand remains after attaining Gnan, then that is considered a grave misery. If one can see anger in a Gnani Purush, it is the end of it, is it not? You have become (khengar) useless; you have become a sack full of intellect! Now understand that and become a Shuddhatma. One is considered a fool if he tries to have it both ways. When is it considered sense? It is when the line ahead keeps clearing and there is constantly a smile on one’s face. These are called ‘sack full of intelligence’. Their line is not clear and on the contrary they create entanglements wherever they go. Craziness of intellect – over-wiseness Questioner: This intellect creates entanglements, what is that? Dadashri: Entanglements is overwiseness. Over-wiseness means that one tries to do everything according to his own wisdom. He continues to use his wisdom in everything. He will do what a Gnani Purush tells him, but he will still use his own wisdom. Such as, if he has been told to take the medicine at 3:00, he will think, what difference it makes if he takes March 2010

DADAVANI

it at 3:15? He will not cease to use his own wisdom. And that is the cause of all the entanglements. Worldly life exists because of intellect. If intellect acts crazy then you should say, ‘I will drop you somewhere far away.’ What does intellect make you do? It makes you do swachhand (be guided by one’s own will and decisions). It will make you do swachhand even if you are always in the company of Lord Mahavira. It will say, ‘Lord may say that but….’ This is what your intellect will make you do. Once one of mahatma had scolded his intellect, ‘Who do you think you are? I can understand all this. Are you trying to make a fool of me? Are you arguing against His words, when His words are the ultimate words? Can you not remain straight there?’ Intellect will make you argue with your wife or your children; but why here? Intellect will not let you sit in peace. Scolding is a crazy ego What is this tongue and this speech that creates and destroys and destroys and creates? It is the ego of the previous life. It is because of this ego that the tongue lashes out ruthlessly and creates vibrations, causing conflicts. Most of the miseries today are because of vibrations caused by the tongue and the speech. At certain times, do you not speak pleasantly? You do so when you speak with your boss or your superiors. But you use harsh language with those who work under you. You criticize and scold them all day long. Your entire speech becomes ruined because there is ego behind it. There is nothing in this world worth saying. Whatever we say, is ego. The entire world is with an internal regulator. March 2010

Rebuke and scolding leads a person to avoid telling the truth and resort to deceit. Deceit arises in the world because of the fear of reprimand and rebuke. Reprimanding others is the highest ego; it is a crazy ego. Censuring is only useful when it is not coupled with prejudice. The laws of karma are such that if you scold your servant, your child or your wife for an hour, in your next life they will return as your husband or your mother-in-law and do the same to you. Surely we need justice? You will have to suffer the same thing. If you hurt anyone, you will have suffering throughout your life. Even if you hurt someone for just an hour, you will have to experience a lifetime worth of suffering. ‘I am verily in control’ – is crazy ego As much as possible, it is worth doing for the Self. And there is nothing that we can change in this worldly life. In worldly life ‘Youthe Self’ should tell ‘Chandubhai’ that, ‘Keep on doing work. Even if something changes afterwards do not scold, do not scold anyone and keep on doing work.’ You should say this. There is nothing to scold or fight in the worldly life at all. The one who has a disease will keep on scolding and fighting. Do these cows and buffalos fight everyday! At the most once in a while, otherwise they go together and come together. No bickering with each other or no trouble. There is no talk about scolding at all. Scolding means it is verily an ego, an overt ego. It is called a crazy ego. He will believe in his mind that, ‘They cannot do without me. All this will be ruined.’ That ego is called a crazy ego. So one should stop where there is a talk about conflict and fighting. You should not say even a word to 21

DADAVANI

anyone in this world. To do so is a major disease. Each one of us have brought our own accounts from the past. What is the point in interfering? Stop speaking even a one word. I have given you the knowledge of vyavasthit scientific circumstantial evidences for this very reason. So without the knowledge of vyavasthit, a person cannot refrain from speaking. Because when the tea cups are broken through the hands of the servant the mooah—the one dying by the second, the master, will not refrain from shouting. Will he? He will yell at servant, ‘Why did you break them? Are your hands broken?’ But now after Gnan, the tea cups are broken, then who broke them? The Gnan of vyavasthit is given, so nothing has to be said, no? And that which happened is vyavasthit only. Therefore, you should stop speaking even a word. To do so is a major disease, according to the Lord. Only Gnani can speak. How is the speech of a Gnani? The speech of the Gnani is dependent upon the wishes of the other person. The Gnani’s speech emanates purely for the purpose of fulfilling the wishes of others. Otherwise why will he have to speak? Gnani’s speech is syadvaad (speech that hurts no one’s ego or viewpoint), people like to listen.

Why do you keep babbling? There is nothing worth speaking. Yes, what kind of speech would be of the speaker? The speech should be such that one would love to listen, ‘what did you say, uncle? What did you say uncle?’ And here, one will fight before even one speaks. One will say, ‘You leave alone your bickering, you keep creating interference unnecessarily.’ Only one thing is required to do in this world. No one should speak anything. Whatever is there, eat it quietly and go do your own work, you should keep doing your work. Do not speak or do such a thing. Questioner: But Dada, when I say something with anger to children or wife, it feels like I am acting in a play… Dadashri: Yes. There is no problem if you keep intent that it is transient and like a play. If other person is fighting then it is not worth for you fighting with him. If he thinks you are stupid then you should know so. Does he have a law in his hand for anyone going to moksha? You should take the certificate from Dada, and check how His certificate is, that’s all. When does the ego become alive?

And the moment one listens to that other speech, it disturbs the self, and shakes one up, and this causes so much sin (paap). You cannot speak even a word in this world. To speak even a little is called (kachkach) bickering.

Questioner: If someone tells me that you are like this and like that, that I am crazy, then I should not defend, should not protect. I should say that I have been like this from the beginning. If I took a side uparanu or did protection rakshan then nirjeev lifeless ego, will become sajeev living ego, is it true?

If we ask out there that, ‘What your uncle was saying?’ Then he would say, ‘That uncle was bickering for no reason.’ Then what, are these all animals, mooah? You are saying that your uncle is bickering. Hey you stupid!

Dadashri: It does not become a living ego, but because you sided with it uparanu means You will be forced into more dakho interference—‘I am Chandulal.’ If you took a side, the whole night will pass in restlessness

due to interference. If he says, you are like this, so be it, then it is over. If you try to do plus or minus then you will not get any solution the whole night. That is why you should say, ‘I am indeed like what you are saying.’ If you talk like that then the file will settle to some extent. Questioner: What about the defeat I accepted in front of him? Like saying, I am what you say I am. Dadashri: The one who accepts and admits the defeat, what else is left for him to do? I have just shown you my way, the way that I followed. The ego of ignorant state is called a live (sajeev) ego. After the realization of the Self it becomes lifeless (nirjeev). If You sided with lifeless ego that ‘I am not like this’, then it can become alive again. You have to bring closure of the lifeless ego, You do not have to protect it.

cannot do without me at all, I am verily the doer. Who else can do? No one can do.’ One does such egoism and that is living ego. Questioner: Do you call it live ego when this person feels like, ‘You cannot do without me’? Dadashri: Such awareness that, ‘I am doing’ during every action is verily live ego. A barber simply has to make a decision that I want to shave this person, and it happens, but if he ever says that, ‘I am doing, no one except me can do it,’ then he would nick the customer and draw blood. So if the work is done naturally then one can get a hundred percent result and if he ever tries to do something else then he can get forty percent result. So the result of naturalness (sahajata) is high. Ego is blind. It does not let you complete your work successfully and apart from that it binds the next life.

And the moment one misses the five Agnas, the ego starts to become alive (sajeev). It will not take time, will it? For many people it has become sajeev alive again. You missed Agna, if you forsake the five Agnas then everything becomes alive again. All those who have given up, their ego is alive again. This ego that has been given life takes its position where it used to be in the past. If you do not abide by the five Agnas then kusang— company that takes one away from the Self, will eat you up. This kusang all around you will eat up lifelessness (nirjeevta) of ego entirely.

Questioner: If I say that, ‘This cannot be done without me’, so where am I getting bound?

‘It won’t work without me’ – is crazy ego

Dadashri: Everywhere in the relative world it is the live ego. It is like this, what he says in the home, ‘This household runs because of me, otherwise it is such that, if I am not around then you would be in wretched

Questioner: Alive (sajeev) means what kind of ego? Dadashri: Alive (sajeev) means, ‘You March 2010

Dadashri: What is the necessity of saying, ‘You cannot do without me?’ Do these great leaders say ‘what will happen of this world if we are not around’? Then the people will say that, many people like you came and left. Questioner: If a person with commonsense, does not exercise his ego by saying, ‘You cannot do without me’ then where is the question of binding karma in that?

condition.’ When he says like this then what his wife will say, ‘look at this! Here comes the one claiming doership! This house runs because I am here, otherwise these girls would wander.’ There that driver will say, ‘I saved’. And if we ask the one who was saved, he will say, ‘It is just that I jumped high, that is I why I am alive. How he was going to save me?’ Then that policemen says, ‘It is because I was there, that is why you are saved.’ So all that is craziness of ego. All the responsibilities go on the head of an egoistic person What does this king say? He says that, ‘I killed hundreds of thousands of people.’ The king is only doing the egoism; he is taking the sweet juice of doership (garvaras). Actually, those who were in the war had killed them. The king is taking on the liability without doing anything! The killings are done by those warriors, yet the king says, ‘I killed.’ He says such crazy stuff only. What kind of result do those people who killed get? Because of this, the killer is acquitted. The rule is that the one who is egoistic, the responsibility will go on to his head. If you say ‘I killed’- then, ‘take it.’ Instead, he thinks that, ‘O ho ho! My prestige went up in this world.’ Yes, the prestige did go up on one hand, but it will bring result and you will have to suffer it alone. The one who does the egoism will get its result. It happens by itself; the result of karma made him a king. But he does the egoism, ‘I did!’ Then he will get the beating. Crazy ego makes one worry Questioner: You had said once in satsang that, ‘Worry is a sign of ego.’ 24

Dadashri: Yes, why is worry known as a sign of ego? He feels in his mind that I am making it all work and for that reason he worries. I am the one making it work meaning what will happen to this daughter, what will happen to this son, he says. What will happen to this, how will it happen, what will happen if the house is not completed? He takes over this worry on his head. He believes himself as the doer. I am the owner, I am the only one doing it; he believes this. He is not the doer and he unnecessarily takes on the worrying. Worrying may be there because of sense of doership, but the doership intent is there in every human being. Here, it is crazy egoism. To worry is crazy egoism. Everyone in the airplane may be enjoying a cup of tea or coffee and this silly man goes on worrying as to what will happen if the plane falls down. Then mooah, look at the people sipping tea and Pepsi! Should this not be known? What kind of egoism is this called then? If you tell the other passenger that this man is getting this type of thoughts; then he will say, ‘What kind of a person is he? Is he crazy?’ Therefore, there must be no worry at all. ‘I am something’ is craziness of ego Questioner: Is there more pain and suffering when you believe ‘I am something’. Dadashri: Surely, you have to suffer it. One lets go of this belief, of ‘I-ness hoonpanu’ upon suffering from the beating. Without such beating, it does not leave. One has to experience the beating. Such experience is necessary. Pratikraman does not help remove this ‘I am something type of I-ness.’ Questioner: How does one get rid of this sense of ‘I am so and so and I can do this etc?’ March 2010

DADAVANI

Dadashri: If one takes the beating then only it will, otherwise not. Questioner: Having experienced a beating one can realize his mistake; but in reaction to the pain would he not go on a wrong track? Dadashri: One may really go off on a wrong track. The possibility is unlikely for someone with our Gnan. Elsewhere this may happen. Our Gnan helps him look back and discover his mistakes even when he has gone astray. Questioner: So later he has some inner burning effects and that is why he gets back on track? Dadashri: Only such sensation tells him the mistake has happened and therefore he turns around. This is because he has seen the days without any such burning, and so the moment the burning discomfort arises, he turns back. This is why people say, ‘Dada, after having been initiated in your Gnan we cannot afford to venture elsewhere because otherwise the burning that arises is unbearable.’ Questioner: One’s interaction with people all around is such that if he carries a special talent, the ego gets nourished in that crowd and one gets accustomed to feeding the hungry ego of pride within, because everyone compliments and sweet talks wherever he goes. One feels good inside. The craziness of ego that ‘I am someone’ is building up. Is this not true?

though it is lifeless? Dadashri: Being without life it does not grow. Whatever is there will be resolved. Questioner: But, can it not hurt and harm others? Dadashri: Yes, it can hurt you as well as the other person; although to a lesser degree to both, since there is no life in it. One will not fall away from this Gnan. Actually your Gnan would have reached its pinnacle if you kept the discharge ego aside. Your ego has this tendency to interfere because of its belief that ‘I am something’, ‘I am something.’ That much of the ‘I-ness’ has not been removed. I am trying to help you be rid of that ‘I-ness’ but it does not happen. That ‘I-hoon’ has become sensitive that is why all this interference—dakho happens. I said, ‘Hey! It is not there in anything! I am not in anything either, so where have you come from?’ Even then that ‘I-hoon’ does not leave for you. Otherwise this Gnan is such that it can manifest and shine gloriously. What for do you need this ‘I-hoon’? It has to be removed. So let me give you the understanding of my technique. It is not worth interfering dakho (I am Chandulal) in anything.

Dadashri: That is the discharging— lifeless ego. There is no life left in this ego after our Gnan.

Until that ‘I-hoon’ is completely pulled out with all its roots, there is no telling when it will grow all over again. When, under what circumstances, what may arise is unpredictable, so what is one to do? Ignorance has left. Now one has to persist in digging out the ego. And whatever baggage there is; is of the ego. The necessary discharging ego is dramatic for sure. But within there is another that is surreptitiously entangling, and that is not easily known.

Questioner: Isn’t it troubling even
