Dade Heritage Days is orchestrated by the non-profit Dade Heritage Trust as a celebration of historic places throughout Miami-Dade County. Freedom Tower and New World Mural Tuesday-Friday, 12:00-5:00 p.m. Freedom Tower, 600 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami The 17-story Freedom Tower, built in 1925 for the Miami News, was designed by Schultz and Weaver and modeled after the Giralda Bell Tower in Seville, Spain. From 1962-74 it served as a Cuban refugee center and became known as the Freedom Tower. After Dade Heritage Trust led a preservation effort to save the landmark from condo development, the Tower was donated to Miami Dade College in 2005 and has become the Museum of Art + Design. The building is listed on the National Register and is a National Historic Landmark. Tour the exhibits and admire the ballroom’s New World Mural, a 1988 recreation by The Miami Artisans Wade S. Foy, William Mark Coulthard, John Conroy, Gerome V. Bergensen, Phylis Shaw and Ana Bikic of a 1925 mural depicting the encounter of Ponce de Leon and Native Americans. FREE. Douglas Road, Coconut Grove Explore The Kampong – the private home and gardens of plant explorer David Fairchild. With over 2000 varieties of tropical and subtropical fruits, palms and flowering trees, and vines, The Kampong is an 11-acre jewel in the middle of metropolitan Miami. Guided tours include both horticultural and historical information, a behind-the-scenes look at Fairchild’s original plantings, as well as the office where he Gerald Obregon, Teacher Robert Morgan Education Center wrote many of his books. Vizcaya Contemporary Arts Project (CAP) Daily through March 18th during regular museum hours Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, 3251 S Miami Ave, Miami From painters John Singer Sargent and Gari Melchers, both extended houseguests of James Deering, to sculptor Alexander Stirling Calder, responsible for the Barge figures, Vizcaya has been a source of inspiration to artists. Through CAP, Vizcaya continues Deering’s patronage by inviting artists to create site-specific projects that provide visitors with new ways of seeing the estate. Vizcaya presents The Light Club of Vizcaya: A Women’s Picture, a project by Josiah McElheny. A New York-based artist and MacArthur Fellow, McElheny has created a 30-minute film referencing a little-known 1912 short story by German author Paul Scheerbart, “The Light Club of Batavia.” McElheny draws his characters from Vizcaya’s history and uses the estate as the ingenious setting for this narrative about the promise of modernity and utopia. The Official Art Deco District Walking Tour Daily at 10:30 a.m. Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. 1001 Ocean Drive, Miami Beach This ninety-minute walking tour provides an introduction to the Art Deco, Mediterranean Revival, and Miami Modern (MiMo) styles found within the Miami Beach Architectural Historic District. “Doc” Thomas, an early South Miami resident and entrepreneur, the house was designed by Robert Fitch Smith, the first Dean of the University of Miami School of Architecture and noteworthy as an architect for his contributions and influence on MiMo, Miami Modern design and architecture. The home he designed for Doc Thomas is unique for many reasons, and has been nominated for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. The Villagers 2013 Garden Tour “Garden Concepts” Saturday, March 2, 10:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m. This year’s tour showcases gardens in Central Coral Gables, an area that is part of the original Town Plan developed in the 1920s. A panel discussion, Profiting from the Past, will be held from 1:00-3:30 p.m. at the site of the historic Ball and Chain Club, which will soon undergo a major restoration. Featured speakers will be developer Bill Fuller of The Barlington Group, real estate investor Jose Fernandez, architect William B. Medellin, and Denis Russ, South Beach Art Deco District preservation and development expert. Corinna J. Moebius, the publisher of Little Havana Guide, who specializes in cultural heritage tours of Little Havana, will lead a tour from 3:45-5:30 p.m. She will give you a taste of the flavor and culture of Calle Ocho. Cape Florida Heritage Day Saturday, March 9th 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park, Key Biscayne Climb to the top of the Cape Florida Lighthouse and take a journey back in time. Imagine sailing across the vast Atlantic Ocean in a Spanish caravel ship like the one Juan Ponce de Leon sailed in 1513, or life on the isolated island as the lighthouse keeper in the 1850s. Park Biologist Elizabeth Golden will be leading two nature walks highlighting the plants and vegetation that Juan Ponce de Leon would have observed when he set foot on Key Biscayne in 1513. Tours are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Historical re-enactors will be recreating 1858 Pre-Civil War life on the island. A Lighthouse Keeper, 1850s Cape Florida family, ship salvager, and a huntertrapper will be featured. Candle-making demonstrations and live dulcimer music make for a fun and educational family day. Local historian Joan Gill Blank will be on hand to answer questions and have her book, “Key Biscayne: A History of Miami’s Tropical Island and the Cape Florida Lighthouse,” available for purchase. Rangers and members of Dade Heritage Trust will also be on hand to talk about the Lighthouse restoration, a project co-sponsored by the Florida Park Service and Dade Heritage Trust. Commemorative Lighthouse bricks will be on sale by Dade Heritage Trust. While in the park make sure to stop in at the Park’s two restaurants. Fresh seafood and Cuban cuisine are always favorites at the Boaters Grill as you dine and view the yachts just yards away in No Name Harbor. Dade Heritage Trust’s Annual Preservation Awards Thursday, April 25, 6:00 p.m. Coral Gables Museum 285 Aragon Ave, Coral Gables All are invited to attend Dade Heritage Trust’s Annual Preservation Awards Ceremony and Reception as we honor outstanding individuals, organizations and restoration projects that have excelled in preserving Miami’s historic places. This year’s Preservation Awards will be hosted by the historic Coral Gables Museum. The oolitic limestone building was constructed in 1939 as the Coral Gables Fire and Police Station and featured busts carved by WPA artists. In the 1980s the structure was used as City offices and headquarters for the Junior League of Miami. A drive to renovate and expand the building for a museum began in the 1990s and led to the creation of today’s dynamic cultural center. Tour the museum exhibits, enjoy a presentation and toast the winners at a reception with refreshments for a lively evening. Advanced reservation and payment required by April 22nd.
