ONGOING EVENTS DHT’s Student Art and Photography Competition Exhibit March 21-30 Coral Gables Museum, 285 Aragon Ave, Coral Gables April 27 - May 16 Deering Estate, 16701 SW 72nd Ave, Miami All are invited to Dade Heritage Trust’s annual exhibition of student artwork inspired by Miami’s historic architectural traditions. DHT’s Student Art and Photography Competition is a visual arts competition for elementary, middle 2013 1st Place - High School Venetian Pool by Kristine Ramsey and high school students in MiamiFlorida Christian School Dade County. Artwork depicts some aspect of the county’s architectural heritage. The competition seeks to inspire young Miami-Dade County artists to become better acquainted with the rich architectural, cultural and environmental history of the county. Contemporary Arts Project - The Academic and the AvantGarde: Artists of the 1913 Armory Show at Vizcaya March 1-31 Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, 3251 S. Miami Ave, Miami This year marks the centennial of the 1913 Armory Show, the legendary New York exhibition that signaled America’s introduction to modern art by


noted European and American artists. Among the artists exhibited were Robert Winthrop Chanler, Charles Cary Rumsey and Gaston Lachaise. Soon thereafter, these same artists would create site-specific work for Vizcaya. The Academic and the Avant Garde exhibit celebrates the Armory Show’s centennial and Vizcaya’s role in commissioning contemporary art in the early 20th century by exploring these artists and some of their contemporaries. March 4 & 18, April 1 & 15 - FYI: “The Great Gleason Express” Nobody partied like showbiz giant Jackie Gleason. In 1964 the Great One packed his CBS hit, The Jackie Gleason Show, including cast members, jazz bands and the June Taylor Dancers, onto a special train and headed for Miami Beach, turning his move to “The Sun and Fun Capital of the World” into a rollicking rolling shindig. WTVJ went along for the ride and captured the craziness! March 6 & 20, April 3 & 17 - How Sweet It Was: Jackie Gleason in Miami When The Jackie Gleason Show came to Miami Beach, WTVJ was there to cover it. Gleason’s show was a CBS smash hit and WTVJ was a CBS affiliate, so the station got great access and the show got great publicity. MARCH History Comes to Life - 4th Annual “Vintage Day” Celebration at Everglades National Park! Saturday, March 1, 10:00 a.m.—3:00 p.m. Everglades National Park Royal Palm Visitor Center Visitors of all ages will have the opportunity to interact with costumed interpreters representing the people who have left a legacy on the land known as The Everglades. There will also be special tours and presentations by local authors and historians. Park guests can leave their cars at the Coe Visitor Center and ride the Homestead Trolley back in time to Royal Palm., where they will meet costumed interpreters portraying gladesmen, plume hunters, early park wardens, botanists, gator hunters, conservationists, and political activists. Special guided tours of the old “Royal Palms State Park,” a historical area owned and protected by the Florida Federation of Women’s Clubs in the first half of the 20th century, led by Civilian Conservation Corpsman from the 1930s will be available. There will also be guided walks through a hammock by an early botanical artist, as well as a tour of the Mike missile base led by a cold war era soldier. Entrepreneur Julia Tuttle (1849-1898) is the only female to have founded a major U.S. city. Featured speaker will be Penny Lambeth portraying Julia Tuttle. FREE. Trinity Cathedral Tour & Tea Sunday, March 2, 1:30 p.m. Trinity Cathedral 464 NE 16th Street, Miami Trinity Cathedral, the oldest church in Miami’s original city limits, was erected 1925. In 1970 it was officially designated as the cathedral and mother church of the Diocese of Southeast Florida. Later, in 1980 the cathedral was designated a historic structure and listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. Visit and tour the


newly restored cathedral after 5 years of restoration construction at a cost of $7M. Historical re-enactors will be recreating the 1858 Pre-Civil War time period, featuring a lighthouse keeper and Cape Florida family life. There will be demonstrations of candlemaking and a musician will be playing a dulcimer. A ship salvager and hunter/trapper will also be there. Local historian Joan Gill Blank will be present to answer questions and to offer for sale her book, “Key Biscayne: A History of Miami’s Tropical Island and the Cape Florida Lighthouse,” available for purchase. Members of Dade Heritage Trust will also be on hand to explain the 1996 restoration of the Cape Florida Lighthouse that they co-sponsored with the Florida Park Service. They will also be selling commemorative bricks for the lighthouse entrance walkway. While you’re in the park make sure to stop in at one of the Park’s two restaurants. Fresh seafood and Cuban cuisine are always favorites at the Boaters Grill as you dine and view the yachts just yards away in No Name Harbor. Or enjoy the ocean breezes with some fresh fish or a burger on the deck of the Lighthouse Café. You may enjoy wine and beer at both park restaurants. Remember, you can rent a bicycle in the park and enjoy 1.5 miles of bike trails; you can bring your roller skates and explore the park; you can rent a kayak, swim or just sunbathe on 1.5 miles of beach. Pinewood Cemetery is recognized as the oldest cemetery south of the Miami River and one of the oldest historical sites in Coral Gables. It is the final resting place for more than 200 pioneers from the 1800s and early 1900s, including veterans of the Seminole Indian War, Civil, War, Spanish-American War, and WWI, as well as victims of the 1926 hurricane. The oolitic limestone building was constructed in 1939 as the Coral Gables Fire and Police Station and featured busts carved by WPA artists.
