While preparing for the beginning of the school year, I wanted to read and reflect on a scripture reading, as I do every month. I chose St. Paul’s letter to the Colossians in the first reading from September 4th, our first day of school. My hope was that I would be inspired to motivate the girls as they return to school. Sure enough, that is exactly what happened. Two words stood out – gratitude and hope. St. Paul thanks the people of Colossae for their belief in the Gospel and love for all the holy ones, the believers in Jesus Christ. As I look at our girls and faculty, I am filled with gratitude for all their talents and love for Dominican Academy. I know very well that D.A. relies on help in many forms from others for whom I am very grateful. You are listed in this report. We could not offer the quality program that we do without your financial and personal support. My special thanks to our Board of Trustees led by Joan Morrow Rue, ’65, who volunteer their time, talent and treasure to help D.A. grow stronger each year. I am very excited to announce that Bob Robotti, brother of Barbara Robotti Murray, ’64 and current Board member, pledged $500,000 over the next five years to help us build our Mandarin program and support our international effort which is a part of our strategic plan. My appreciation also extends to Diane Donnelly Kenney, ’66, who hosted a mini reunion in Naples, Florida in the spring. I met some wonderful alumnae and we shared many stories. I look forward to meeting more of you at mini reunions around the country. I am

indebted to co-chairs, Ann Marie Flynn, ’69, Izabella Stasicki, ’04 and Wendy Fernandez, P’14, ’16 and all the committee members and supporters of our Spring Auction & Benefit. Ann Marie has worked for the betterment of D.A. for over 25 years. She writes, “it’s time for me to step back and to let others take good care of D.A.” Izabella is also taking a break as she readies to marry this spring. Wendy Fernandez, our third co-chair, will stay on as we rebuild the leadership team. The Benefit has grown by leaps and bounds under their guidance and the hard work of our committee. Alumnae and parents, please consider joining this committee as we continue this important fundraiser.

Academy. Of course, I hope that each of the girls will have a successful year and that the seniors will be accepted into the colleges of their choice with many scholarship offers. I also hope that each of you will continue your belief in the mission of D.A., support us with your personal and financial gifts and encourage others to support us as well.

The second word – hope – reflects my belief and confidence in the future of Dominican

Sister Barbara Kane, O.P. Principal

Gratitude and hope - my words for the year. You have my sincere gratitude and my prayers of hope for blessings for you in the coming year. Peace,

Letter from the Board of Trustees Chair Dear Alumnae and Friends, Twenty four Archdiocesan schools were closed last year as part of the Diocesan strategic plan, Pathways to Excellence, to guarantee a vibrant, sustainable Catholic elementary school system for now and in the future. Most of the schools that were shuttered were not failing academically. In fact, Archdiocesan schools routinely exceed New York State averages in English and Math. The problems of declining enrollments; expensive building repairs and increasing salary and benefits costs result in financial deficits that cannot be met by tuition alone. The answer for the Archdiocese is to consolidate the large diocesan structure into smaller regions responsible for the schools within their borders. It will require more financial support from all parishes. Perhaps this plan will work. Only time will tell. How do the problems facing Archdiocesan schools in New York affect an independent Catholic school like Dominican Academy? Actually, Dominican Academy faces many of the same challenges in today’s competitive academic environment. There are today about 15% fewer students enrolled in Catholic elementary schools than there were in 2006, and nearly 50% fewer than in the 1960’s. Not only is the number of potential Dominican students smaller, but the choices for parents are greater than ever before. New York City has established eight Specialized High Schools for intellectually gifted students. Is not the mission of Dominican Academy to educate intellectually gifted young women? Now some girls who traditionally would be

Dominican Academy students choose to go to one of these free schools. In addition, most of the Catholic Archdiocesan high schools offer honors programs that nearly rival our academic program at a lower tuition than Dominican Academy’s. Finally, the two most exclusive All-girls private Catholic high schools are offering full scholarships to some of the brightest eighth grade girls diminishing our number of applicants even further. Dominican Academy has always been “needs blind” when choosing its students, offering admission only to girls who qualify academically. Tuition does not cover instruction and student activities, but there is no easy fix. Raising tuition sometimes forces parents who like what Dominican Academy offers to choose one of the aforementioned alternatives. Also, increasing tuition has resulted in an increase in the number of current Dominican Academy families needing some financial assistance, so that there is little financial benefit. Given these enrollment challenges, how do private Catholic schools manage to survive? Most rely on charitable giving and investments earned by Endowment accounts. The key is to have charitable giving increase each year so that the Endowment accounts can be used for scholarships and significant capital improvements and not for operational expenses. I am most grateful to all those alumnae, friends, parents, faculty, staff and administration that have financially supported Dominican Academy through the years. It is through your generosity that our school is able to offer the kind of academic and religious curriculum of which we are all

proud. However, only 18% of our alumnae regularly donate to the Annual Fund for Excellence. That percentage seems incredibly small for a school with such a fine reputation. Far too many of us are failing to give back to the school that gave us so much. Not all private schools are facing such a dilemma. Xavier enjoys a 25% response annually from their alumni, and has now set a goal for 30% participation. Operational costs are covered. Interest taken from Endowment funds is almost totally repaid. A teacher at Xavier with a Masters Degree and ten years experience is paid 14% more than a teacher at Dominican Academy with the same degree and years of experience. Xavier’s tuition is similar to ours, but it is able to offer more scholarships and better pay, in part, due to the greater number of alumni willing to contribute to their alma mater. An increase in our fundraising dollars would make it possible for our school to offer more scholarships, advanced placement courses and a better raise for our employees.

I am not expecting us to raise the amount of money that the larger schools with more alumni do. What I am hoping is that every alumna of Dominican Academy would find a way to contribute something each year, or every other year, to the Annual Fund for Excellence. Today, 47% of the total United States labor force is women. That trend is likely to continue in the next decade making it more important than ever for high school girls to get the education that is needed to be successful in both college and the workplace. All of us post college alumnae need to be willing to support this wonderful school that plays an important role in the education of young women. Let’s make this academic year of 2013 -2014 the renewal of commitment to our alma mater to insure its continued viability. Sincerely, Joan Morrow Rue, ’65 Chair of the Board of Trustees

Scholarship Giving

Dominican Academy is blessed by the generosity of its scholarship donors, the Board of Trustees and the Dominican Sisters of Peace, who support the mission to educate and challenge young women. Without this support, many scholars would not be able to attend Dominican Academy.

Adrian Radmore Foster Scholarship Fund Adrian Radmore Foster, ’51 has pledged to fully fund this four-year scholarship for a deserving Dominican Academy student. We thank Adrian for her generous donation and for recognizing the value of a Dominican Academy education.

Class of 1954 Scholarship The Class of 1954 continues to honor their 50th Reunion Year with a gift that keeps on giving. The class has committed to a half scholarship for a young woman for her four years of study at Dominican Academy. We thank the following members of the Class of 1954 and the Kirwan Family Foundation for offering such a special gift to one special student. Carol Kirwan Aikenhead, ’54 Emilia Bezzo Bargero, ’54 Margaret McAnanly Doherty, ’54 Kathleen O’Shea Donahue, ’54 Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund IBM Corporation Matching Grants Program Kirwan Family Foundation Eileen Baxter Krak, ’54 Mary Elizabeth Egan Mace, ’54 Geraldine Mulligan, ’54

The Bill and Joan Morrow Rue, ’65 Scholarship Fund This generous scholarship not only provides tuition for the recipient’s four years of study at Dominican Academy, but also fully supports

the school by covering all the costs associated with that education. The gap between the tuition charged per student and the expenses the school incurs was approximately $4,700 in 2013. We are grateful to Joan and Bill for their continued commitment to D.A.

Class of 1970 Giving The Class of 1970 initiated a scholarship fund in their name at their 35th reunion in the fall of 2005. Seven years later, the Class of 1970 continues to designate all gifts towards a partial scholarship for a student in need. We are very grateful for their generosity and hope they carry with them a deep satisfaction for their very meaningful gift. Giving The Dominican Academy Alumnae Association Alumnae Serving Alumnae The Alumnae Association’s mission is to foster close relationships among alumnae and to encourage the participation of alumnae in ways that develop the growth and advancement of Dominican Academy. Alumnae work together to support the mission of the school. Every year, these alumnae help coordinate events such as the Rooftop Reconnection Reception in September, All Class Reunion in October, Young Alumnae Welcome Back in December, and Career Day in May. Alumnae are invited to attend various events throughout the year and are encouraged to give back to Dominican Academy so that this new generation of students can benefit from a Dominican Academy education.

Class Representative Program The Class Representative encourages her classmates to keep in touch with each other and with the school in a variety of ways. Each representative helps locate alumnae, shares class notes to be published semi-annually in Veritas, and helps coordinate her class reunion. This includes coordinating a class gift to support the school’s greatest needs. Class Representatives also inform alumnae of meetings and circulate the recorded minutes, which are posted on the web site under the Alumnae Tab. The Alumnae Association meets quarterly and the dates will be posted on the web site calendar. If you want to become a Class Representative, please let us know by emailing alumassoc@dominicanacademy.org. The more reps a class has, the more connected you will be!

Parent Giving

Student Giving

D.A. parents donate their gifts of time and talent to school-sponsored events such as Open House, Meet the Teachers Night, the annual Christmas Party, and the Spring Auction & Benefit. In addition to their invested interest in these events, the Parents’ Association raised $22,300.00 for Dominican Academy through events and the collection of dues.

Students give back to Dominican Academy even before they graduate! We feel strongly that our girls should in some way play a role in fundraising for their school, so each student is responsible for selling a minimum of $300 worth of raffle tickets for the Spring Auction & Benefit. The student body raised $56,956. $1,575 of this was donated by the Class of 2013 as a gift to be used for In Via, the junior retreat.

Dominican Academy is grateful for the continued support of the Parent’s Association. We encourage all parents to participate. Please see the calendar on the website for the dates of the monthly meetings held on Wednesday evenings and Thursday mornings.

2013 Spring Auction & Benefit Giving On March 8, 2013, Dominican Academy hosted the annual Spring Auction & Benefit at the Yale Club. Some of the proceeds from this event help bridge the gap between the tuition charged and the actual expense associated with providing a D.A. education. Your support enables intellectually gifted girls to attend New York City’s most academically rigorous and spiritually enriching Catholic girls’ college preparatory high school. Jackie Cosgrove Morris, ’79, who held many positions on the Board of Trustees including Board President, was honored for the time, commitment, and positive influence she has provided D.A. over the years. The event raised close to $150,000 in revenue, returning over $120,000 to the school. We are grateful to all who supported this event and look forward to seeing you this year at the Yale Club on March 28, 2014.
