n Sunday evening, the No. 16 Long Beach State women’s volleyball team sat lined up in front of a crowd of fans that came to watch who, when and where the team would play in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

LBSU will play the University of San Diego on Friday at the Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles.

After two seasons of failing to appear in the NCAA Tournament, the 49ers have become the ninth team to earn an undefeated Big West season, and this is LBSU’s fifth unbeaten conference season.

Roasting locally Heartbreak Coffee plans to open a store mid-February.

ut of a Long Beach house and garage, a small coffee company is brewing up big plans.

In honor of national small business day, Heartbreak Coffee set up shop at Maker’s Mart on Saturday in the east village of Long Beach.

Co-founder Michelle Bandach, a Cal State University Long Beach political science graduate, said Heartbreak Coffee sold out of most of its products, including 20 pounds of coffee and 40 jars of cold-brew drinks while at the event.

Co-founder and roaster, Gretchen Williams said Long beach is a great place for small businesses to do well.

“You don’t have to work too hard to want people to shop small and shop local because people love this city and want to support it,” Williams said.

After graduating from University of Mississippi in 2008, Williams took on roasting and brewing her own coffee as a hobby. She and Bandach began brewing their own coffee and giving it to friends. “[Last November], we had our

“We’re hoping to be open by February if possible [because] in the middle of February… the National Barista Championships (NBC) will be at the convention center [in Long Beach],” Williams said.

Williams said this event would bring in a crowd of coffee enthusiasts as high as 10,000 people to the Long Beach area. She said Heartbreak Coffee wants to have a presence in this event and have guest shifts of NBC barista competitors at their store as a way to intermingle with the community.

Corbell said Heartbreak Coffee is founded on authenticity and genuine hospitality.

“A lot of times, the barista is the first person someone sees in the morning, and we can be a catalyst for their day,” Corbell said. “Having a store is a great way to know the community and create relationships with the people in it that I believe in.”

Williams said company’s slogan, “All things bittersweet,” embodies the meaning behind the name.

“When I bought my roaster, I was at a super low place … it felt like the universe was telling me not to pursue coffee,” Williams said. “[Heartbreak Coffee] is the idea of taking things that are kind of bittersweet and turning it into something great and productive and successful and that people love. It’s all the heartbreak.”

College of Business Administration named one of the nation’s best

CSULB alumna

CSULB CBA was named one of 296 best business schools in the nation.

Amy Laughlin said her education and experiences at CSULB helped shape her as an educator.

The Princeton Review named the College of Business Administration at Cal State University Long Beach one of the nation’s best 296 business schools last week, according to a press release.

“We are very committed to the academic and career success of our students, and for our program to be recognized by the prestigious Princeton Review is a wonderful validation of our efforts,” Dean of the College of Business Administration Michael Solt said in a press release. “Our goal is to provide our students with highly-valued degrees, and we seem to be on the right path.”

The Princeton Review listed the best schools, but did not rank them. The information Princeton Review provided helps potential business students decide which college may be best for them, according to its website.

“Each school in our books offers outstanding academics: no single law or [business] school is ‘best’ overall,” Robert Franek, senior vice president and publisher of the Princeton Review, said in a press release. “We publish rankings in several categories along with our detailed profiles of the schools to give applicants the broader information they need to determine which school will be best for them.”

The list was completed by surveying 21,600 students and administrators at the 296 featured schools, according to a press release. Students were asked their opinions of their school’s academics, student body and campus life, as well as their career plans.

Williams and Bandach said they started with a half-pound, table top roaster that they quickly outgrew.

Williams said she has a larger roaster in the garage, but that sustaining all aspects of production, such as labelmaking and shipping, from their home is no longer feasible.

“The next step is having a constant place where people can come in daily to get our coffee,” Williams said.

This is the first year Maker’s Mart has blocked off the street to allow for a bigger venue.

Gina Dartt, the Marketing and special events manager for Downtown Long Beach Associates, said last year, store owners worked independently to have sidewalk sales.

“We wanted to get behind their efforts and expand this already established event and really grow it to bring a lot of people downtown to shop at small businesses,” Dartt said.

Williams said Heartbreak business began to boom for them due to interest on Instagram and international support of their kick-starter, which received donations from about 500 people all over the world.

Since they started, they have brought in friend, Larina Corbell as a co-owner and wholesale manager.

Alumna of Cal State University Long Beach, and a teacher at Hansen School in Anaheim, Amy Laughlin was named 2015 California Teacher of the Year by Tom Torlakson, Superintendent of Public Instruction, according to a press release.

“I am honored to receive this award. I share this with the colleagues I collaborate with and the thousands of hard-working California teachers who are just as passionate about making a difference as I am,” Laughlin said in a press release.

“The courses I took at CSULB surrounded me with inspirational teachers and motivating peers who influenced me to fight for what I stand for.”

Laughlin has been a teacher for 16 years, 13 of them at Hansen School and the last six as a Title I Intervention Specialist. She ensures all children have a fair, equal and significant opportunity to obtain a high quality education, according to a press release.

Hansen School superintendent Sue Johnson said in a press release that Laughlin is “a dynamic educator who has a desire to enhance teaching and learning with a heart for and dedication to the children she serves.”

Laughlin also earned the 2015 Orange County and Savanna School District Teacher of the Year awards.

Laughlin earned an Administrative Services Credential in 2013 at CSULB and a master of arts in curriculum and instruction in middle school education at California State University, San Bernardino. She also earned a B.S. in elementary education from Illinois State University.

Prior to Hansen, she taught at Cahuilla Elementary School in Palm Springs.

“As coordinator, I have had many opportunities to observe Amy display remarkable insight involving key and crucial issues that challenge educators on a daily basis,” Scott said in a press release. “Amy is truly a leader among leaders and inspires everyone with whom she collaborates. We are beyond proud of her accomplishments and know she will continue to make a significant difference in the lives of countless children.”

Senator Feinstein supports proposed amendment to Military Lending Act A proposal to update the Military Lending Act will require tighter regulations on lenders.

United States Senator of California Dianne Feinstein joined 40 senators last week in supporting a proposal to update the Military Lending Act. The update would close loopholes and expand protection to military members from “predatory lending,” according to a press release.

In a letter sent to U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, Feinstein and supporting senators expressed strong support for the proposal, according to a press release on Feinstein’s website.

“As our service members are asked to take on even more tasks in defense of our nation, we should take every opportunity to protect them and their families here at home, especially from unscrupulous lenders,” the letter stated.

The MLA, originally implemented in 2007, caps annual interest rates for consumer credit to service members and their dependents at 36 percent and gives the DOD authority to decide what loans are to be covered, according to a press release on the U.S. Department of Defense website.

The proposal from the Department of Defense to change regulations on the MLA comes after president Obama’s speech

for a partnership with financial lenders for important financial home loan related protections to the military community, according to a DOD press release.

The DOD narrowly defined regulations for three types of closed-end credit; payday loans for no more than $2,000 with a term of 91 days or fewer, auto title loans with a term of 181 days or fewer and tax refund anticipation loans.

The proposed amendment would prohibit creditors from requiring service members to waive their rights under the Service members’ Civil Relief Act, which postpones certain civil obligations allowing them to devote full attention to their duty and relieves stress on family members, according to the DOD website.

The website also states that the amendment would require the creditor be responsible for providing additional disclosures encouraging the service member to seek out other options rather then high-cost credit, such as financial counseling and assistance from the Military Aid societies.

The comment period for the proposed changes on the Federal Register ends on Dec. 26.

Is Bureaucratic Red Tape Standing In The Way Of Cancer Prevention?

lmost 10,000 people will die this year from melanoma skin cancer, and according to the American Cancer Society, more than 3.5 million new cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed this year in the United States. Despite these alarming statistics, the U.S. Food Drug and Administration (FDA) has only approved one new over the counter sunscreen ingredient since the 1990s to combat melanoma skin cancer.

Since 2002, there have been eight new sunscreen ingredients filed with the FDA, yet they are all still awaiting approval. In contrast, these same ingredients have been on the market in several countries throughout Europe and Asia for almost 15 years.

Clearly, the cumbersome and ineffective FDA approval process is flawed. Signing into law the Sunscreen Innovation Act of 2014 would allow these cancer prevention ingredients to reach American citizens.

Body-shaming, the double-edged sword “Real Women Have Curves” and “Real Beauty” campaigns have been overwhelming the media, pushing for women to embrace their curvy figure.

Yet, does this send the message that women who aren’t curvy aren’t real women or don’t have true beauty?

In the past, women with the aesthetics of Marilyn Monroe, the ultimate sex icon, were classified as “sexy.” Those with her features (larger size, curvy hips and big breasts) were extolled over and above the present construction of beauty that dominates fashion runways (tall and skinny). People often reminisce on this time period for embracing curves as beautiful; but in reality, bodyshaming was just as real then as it is now.

How do we change this behavior?

It’s imperative that we stop focusing on aesthetics and focus more on health. Everyone is fighting their own struggle and is entitled to be free from judgment in regards to their appearance and body. If we continue to focus on the way we feel instead of the way we look and treat our body with the care and attention we should, it shouldn’t matter what the numbers on the scale say.

The catch-22 of Obama’s presidency Mara Feliciano Contributing Writer

President Obama is damned if he acts, damned if he doesn’t.

A

catch-22 is a contradictory and enigmatic situation; the phrase comes from the 1961 novel Catch-22 by Joseph Heller in which a pilot wants to be discharged from the military, but can only do so if he is announced to be crazy. It is a popular saying that essentially translates to damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

This is perhaps the most accurate description of President Obama’s presidency. He has served as president of the United States for six years now and has been heavily criticized throughout such.

Obama made history by appealing to the minority crowd. During his first presidential campaign, record numbers were made in voter turnouts. Notably, his race played a

giant factor in that; he is a black man who appealed to the Black American community. Furthermore, his agenda of “fixing” the immigration system appealed to not just Hispanics, but a wide array of minorities.

Within the last few weeks, President Obama announced his intent to establish a resident-status for the millions of illegal immigrants currently living in the United States.

If he had not established a statement on the issue of illegal immigration, those who voted him into office would have condemned him. Additionally, his critics would have deemed him a liar. Though, with Obama’s actual acting on the issue, it is far too simple to criticize him and his stance.

A gridlocked Congress is expected when it comes to subjects such as immigration, same-sex marriage and healthcare due to the heavily rooted beliefs buried in the two political parties.

Additionally, Obama has been notorious for deportations during his presidency; he has surpassed two million deportations since the beginning of his tenure. This presents

another case of catch-22 for Obama: his attempt to appease Republicans, who are strong supporters of strict immigration laws, has unofficially given him the title of “deportation-in-chief.” Obama appeasing one group will always anger the other; he cannot win.

Other than immigration, ObamaCare is what Obama’s presidency will be heavily be remembered as. It is a system that he has been heavily criticized about. However, if Obama had not established a healthcare system during his presidency, he would have been ridiculed as being similar to Jimmy Carter.

President Obama is in a position where every one of his political movements is being heavily evaluated.

It is simple to make the argument that Obama’s entire presidency has been a complete failure. However, the case can also be made that it has been absolutely successful.

The issue with President Obama’s presidency is that if he chooses to act or not on certain matters, he is criticized. President Obama’s presidency is a giant unsolvable puzzle. He cannot win with Congress; bypassing and strong-arming them is one of the few actions he can do to be an effective president. President Obama is damned if he acts, damned if he doesn’t.

Since the five-set win over Hawaii on Nov. 7, the ‘Niners have swept all six of their remaining opponents, and hold a 19set win streak.

In the last two games of conference play, the 49ers defeated UC Irvine (19-12, 9-7 Big West) 25-19, 25-20 and 25-17, and dominated CSUF (8-21, 2-14 Big West) 2516, 25-10 and 25-13.

The team held its senior night against CSUF, and after the win, the team celebrated with the fans by giving out balls, posing

for pictures and wearing their medals.

Gimmillaro said he’s never thrown a celebration like that before.

“We weren’t very good in the beginning, and just the effort from everyone was vital to our development,” Gimmillaro said.

Despite the success the team has had this season, Mackie said there’s always room for improvement.

“We still have stuff to work on, and we kind of found that out tonight [against CSUF],” Mackie said. “We gave a lot away, a lot of points, and we can’t let [opponents] earn points off our errors.”

The team has come a long way since the beginning of the season, and it all started with a goal.

“What this team talked about was the first goal, [which] was to get to the playoffs

– win the conference, which guaranteed us to get there,” Gimmillaro said. “The biggest goal was to improve, and now the goal is to win the next match. It’s win or go home. The idea is to out-prepare, out-play and go on to the next round.”

Gimmillaro talked about the idea of gratitude and how lucky and fortunate they were in receiving the opportunity to play in the NCAA Tournament.

“It sure would be exciting for our school and our program to go to somebody’s home and beat them at their home, especially here in Southern California,” Gimmillaro said.

The 49ers will head to the Pauley Pavilion to face USD on Friday at 5:30 p.m; on Saturday, the winner of Friday’s match will play the victor between No. 12 UCLA and Long Island University-Brooklyn.

The Long Beach State men’s basketball team split two games in the Wooden Legacy Tournament before redeeming itself in a 73-70 win against Xavier at the Honda Center for a third place finish Sunday afternoon.

An 80-70 loss against Washington (5-0) Friday night at Titan Gym in Fullerton overshadowed a promising 73-65 win over Western Michigan the day before.

The win against Xavier (5-2) was LBSU head coach Dan Monson’s 123rd victory, which helped him pass Jerry Tarkanian for the most wins at The Beach.

The 49ers (4-4) pulled away late in the second half against Western Michigan (5-2), finishing on a 27-4 run in the final eight minutes. The official LBSU website reported that Monson thought

senior forward David Samuels and freshman Temidayo Yussuf were the difference in the game. “[The game] had a lot of good guards going out there frustrating and combating each other,” Monson said. “But [Samuels and Yussuf] gave us a presence inside that was vital for us to have success.”

Senior guard Mike Caffey led the team in scoring with another efficient shooting game, going 4-8 from the field and hitting nine of 10 free throws.

Senior guard Tyler Lamb had his best game of the season, scoring 14 points and grabbing eight rebounds.

“We really battled,” the LBSU website reported Monson saying. “We were so concerned when we gave up 95 and 97 in our first two games, and to be able to find another way to win other than just outscoring people, it gives me encouragement that this team can grow and continue to get better.”

With the victory against Western Michigan, the 49ers advanced in the tournament to face Washington Friday night, which they lost to last year in double-overtime in Seattle.

The 49ers were unable to capitalize on career games by Yussuf and fellow freshman guard Deontae North. Yussuf had a career-best 16 points while shooting a near perfect 7-8 from the field.

North also scored 16 points, including

3-5 from three-point range, to continue his effective play off the bench.

Leading by nine in the second half, LBSU’s offense went cold, unable to figure out Washington’s zone defense, while struggling to get to the rim against the Huskies’ seven-foot center Robert Upshaw.

“It’s a disappointing loss,” Monson told Tim Connolly of the Associated Press. “We played hard and played well in stretches and had an opportunity to take control, but I think we broke down in the last 12 minutes. They switched to a zone we didn’t attack it too well.”

Washington sophomore guard Nigel Williams-Goss led his team in scoring with 21 points, shooting 3-7 from the three while playing nearly the entire game (38 minutes). Huskies head coach Lorenzo Romar praised LBSU and Caffey, who again led 49ers in scoring with 18 points.

“It was hard fought game by both teams with momentum swings throughout the game,” Romar said.

“Long Beach State gets after it and Caffey is a heck of a player. But we stuck together and didn’t fold when we got down by nine points in the second half.”

The 49ers will now get set to host Nevada at the Walter Pyramid on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

The 49ers beat all three of their opponents on the road during the holiday week.

The women’s basketball team started Thanksgiving week with wins against Alaska Anchorage and Boise State for the GCI Great Alaska Shootout title, and ended with a victory by handing Portland State its fifth consecutive loss in Oregon.

The 49ers (5-1) edged Portland State (0-5) in a 62-58 win on Saturday, bringing home Long Beach State’s third straight win of the season.

Working through a tough shooting game with 34.4 percent from the field and 2-16 from behind the arc, the 49ers were able to force 21 PSU turnovers while carrying out a season-low, 13 turnovers. LBSU also outrebounded the Vikings 44-40.

The Beach opened strong with a 4-0 lead before the Vikings made their first points almost four minutes into the game. LBSU was able to tie the game after the Vikings stole the lead at 6-4, but 13 unanswered points put PSU up 19-6

with 9:21 left.

Sophomore Raven Benton halted the five-minute scoring absence with a three-point play that prompted a 10-1 run to put The Beach within four at 2016. PSU went up 11 points, but the 49ers closed the first half with the quarter’s final seven points for another four-point deficit at 31-27.

The 49ers came out of the locker room and pushed an 11-2 run to open the second half. A layup from junior Devin Hudson and senior Lauren Spargo’s three-pointer helped give back the 49ers’ lead at 38-33.

The showdown went back and forth, with both teams taking turns capturing the advantage. But with 26.4 seconds left to play, the 49ers pulled ahead 60-56. The Vikings were able to make it a two-point game, but 49er sophomore Anna Kim sank two free throws for the victory.

PSU’s Emily Eason led her team with a game-high 19 points, while Alicia Carline finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Benton paced LBSU with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Spargo pitched in 13 points, while Kim contributed four steals and a career-high seven assists.

Before the 49ers traveled to Oregon, they defeated Boise State (4-2) 68-50 and then Alaska Anchorage (5-0) 69-60 for the tournament crown.

LBSU will end its four-game road swing on Wednesday when it faces Pepperdine at 7 p.m. in Malibu.

Rediscovering old gems Remakes of popular Pokémon games hit shelves last week.

This year, the Pokémon franchise levels up to 18 years old; with time, the series has matured and much has evolved.

The latest installments, Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby, are remakes of 2003’s Sapphire and Ruby.

Ruby and Sapphire featured Pokémon from the third generation of the franchise. The games also marked on of last Pokemon releases for the series on Game Boy Advanced.

This is Nintendo’s first remake for the 3DS and 2DS consoles.

Older fans of Pokemon can now appreciate Nintendo’s efforts to expanded and improved upon what already worked for them in the past.

The game is simple: it’s a first-person, role-playing game that follows a char-

acter that has just moved to the Hoenn Region. The player begins his or her journey by choosing a Pokémon to save Professor Brich from a wild Pokémon.

The familiar starter Pokémon are Treecko, Torchic or Mudkip.

After the player chooses the first Pokémon, he or she is free to explore the region, make some friends along the way, save the planet and ultimately become the world’s greatest Pokémon trainer.

What a difference 11 years can make in the video game realm; the game hit puberty full force with superb 3D renditions of “old school” Pokémon that pop – pixilated battles are now a thing of the past.

We have seen Nintendo give 3D a shot with 2013’s installment X and Y,

but taking a world that is already familiar to some is much more engaging and charming; it should remind players about why they liked Ruby and Sapphire in the first place.

The plot is somewhat identical to the ones released in 2003, but there are new side quests to catch legendary Pokémon Rayquaza and Deoxys.

But it’s the small details and improvements that make make the game worthwhile.

Just the fact that characters are proportionate in relation their age and size is astounding; also, the ability to run without special running shoes, which are often acquired late in the game, is no longer a concern.

Contests that show of Pokémon moves in front of virtual audiences and

audiences also made a return for the first time since 2003. Pikachu is now allowed to dress up in these contests, as well as in battle as a rock star, pop star, a doctor and even a lucha libre luchador.

With so much content, the game has endless replay value; expect to put countless hours into the game even once the main objectives are complete From being one solid color on the Game Boy in 1996 with only 151 Pokémon to collect, to the Pokémon of today, which features immerse 3D worlds with over 700 pocket monster, it’s a game for both kids and kids at heart alike.

If you were ever a fan of the series and haven’t played in years, this might be the one that will make you want to catch ‘em all.
