ASOSU’s nontraditional ambassador By Tori Hittner THE DAILY BAROMETER
Many American students struggle learning a second language and dread their language degree requirements. Junior Ghina Asilia has studied seven. “I love languages,” Asilia said. Asilia has studied English, Spanish, German, French, Japanese, Arabic and Indonesian. The accomplished amateur linguist also has a penchant for a variety of other art forms. Asilia enjoys painting, drawing and music. As a child, she dreamed of becoming a renowned musician with her knowledge of the piano and guitar. A merchandising management major, Asilia originally came from Jakarta, Indonesia. She eventually earned a full scholarship to attend private school in Hawaii, where she lived
with a host family and learned how to speak English. “My first language is Indonesian, so the first few months I was in the U.S., it was quite hard,” Asilia Asilia said. “But it has been such a great experience.” Asilia enjoys living in the United States, particularly as it allows her to stay busy, meet new people and experience new cultures. “When I was a kid, I used to watch a lot of American movies and when I got here (I realized) it was all real stuff,” See ASILIA | page 4
