OSU urges safety with campus reopening THE DAILY BAROMETER

Despite the lingering snow from the 20 inches that fell Thursday and Friday, Oregon State University will be fully operational Monday. OSU’s campus closed Thursday and Friday due to the adverse weather conditions. With dangerous conditions lingering from the storm, travel conditions are more treacherous. Students are encouraged to walk instead of drive to campus. Steve Clark, vice president for university relations and marketing, said he and the provost’s office expect that professors and instructors will accommodate those who cannot safely make it to campus Monday. Dixon Recreation Center and the Valley Library both opened in a limited capacity, while the Memorial Union was closed since Thursday. Throughout the weekend, trees

Campus mourns after RA’s death n

Students grieve, seek memorial for deceased 20-year-old male OSU student By Megan Campbell THE DAILY BAROMETER

Silently, individually or in groups, Oregon State University students stood in front of the memorial. Some cried, others bore mournful expressions. After taking it in, students eventually took a piece of paper and a pen to jot down a quick note to the deceased or his family. After the death of a 20-year-old male resident assistant and former OSU wrestler, who took his life early Thursday morning by jumping off of a residence hall, Marketplace West Dining Center set up a memorial. An OSU custodial worker found the body Thursday outside of Bloss Hall, though the student

lived in Buxton Hall. “What we have is he jumped, intentionally, and we are looking into why,” said Oregon State Police Lt. Steve Mitchell on Friday. “There was no foul play.” There were no witnesses with the man Thursday, and no one saw him jump. The investigation is still ongoing. Evidence has not been released to support that it was intentional. The university’s Student Care Team will be in touch with those who are affected by the loss. Deanna Abramski, a friend of the deceased student, said OSU Counseling & Psychological Services will visit students in the Hawley-Buxton building Sunday. Snowstorm’s effects linger An estimated 14 inches of snow fell between the Corvallis and Albany area over the weekend, with some areas in Corvallis recording as much as two feet of snow accumulation. Crews were plowing along the main transit routes for the Corvallis Transit Service to continue service to customers, with some delays. As of Sunday at 10 a.m., several portions of city streets remained closed due to hazardous conditions. The areas of Elks Drive from Samaritan Drive to Satinwood Street, Witham Hill Drive from Circle Boulevard to 36th Street and 36th Street from Grant Avenue to Lincoln Avenue were closed. Temperatures began to rise Sunday but drivers were still urged to drive only if absolutely necessary. Starting Saturday evening, an estimated 3,075 Corvallis residents were without power. By 11:54 a.m. Pacific Power reported that 1,720 residents were still without power. The National Weather Service predicts warming temperatures and rain for the rest of the week, which could bring with it a risk of flooding.

Supporters donated enough money to the campaign for the MU crane, which is located at the Student Experience Center construction site, for a memorial to be placed outside the soon-to-be constructed building.

The Oregon State University community has come together under an unlikely cause in the past month. The MU crane’s primary purpose is to aid construction on the new Student Experience Center building, which is adjacent to the Memorial Union. Recently, it has become a campus celebrity, garnering more than 3,000 fans on the MU Crane official Facebook page. Bass fishing club tackling competition n

5-year-old record-holding OSU club headed to nationals in March By Courtney Gehring THE DAILY BAROMETER

Out of 33 students randomly surveyed on campus throughout Wednesday, not one knew the Oregon State University bass fishing club existed. But the bass fishing club is doing big things. Not only has the OSU bass fishing club won five of six tournaments, made it to nationals two years in a row, won countless Civil War fishing battles against University of Oregon, but the club has broken the bass weigh-in college record for a two-day

tournament. With a 54-pound, 12-ounce bass, the club still holds this record. The club is five years old and it has been ranked sixth in the nation for several consecutive years. Ryan Sparks, club president and senior studying fisheries and wildlife, said bass fishing isn’t that popular in Oregon and is often overlooked by salmon and steelhead. “Places down in the south, like Alabama, they fill up football stadiums just for college (bass) tournaments,” Sparks said. “It’s insane to see how people view it down there as a sport compared to here.” Courtesy of Ryan Sparks The OSU bass fishing club may not be recognized by a majority of students on Bass fishing club president Ryan Sparks and Zach MacDonald hold up bass after fishing in Lake Havasu in Arizona.
