Day of Love? By Gwen Shaw & Photos By Neil Abrew The Daily Barometer
In the midst of midterms and cold weather, Oregon State University students still find time to celebrate the lovely — and yet so dreadful to some — Valentine’s Day occasion. While some couples make reservations at restaurants and go all out, some choose to relax and spend the night together after a long beginning of the week.

We figure that all restaurants are going to be really busy on Valentine’s Day, so we’re going to go out to dinner tonight and again on Wednesday. We’ve been together for over four and a half years, so were not getting presents or anything.
The online system essentially lets staff and students buy parking permits, pay tickets and traffic fines and ask questions on the TAPS website. Visitors must go through the “conference” link on the TAPS website, as it has not been set up for non-OSU students at this time. Other reasons given were the increased amount of students, and parking spaces that continue to dwindle. Little by little, parking lots are bowing out to the construction of new buildings or dormitories. When students were asked directly about the new system, they were actually pretty positive. “It’s helpful, more accessible and less isolated than the current location of TAPS at Adams Hall,” said M. Tonga Hopoi, ASOSU president. Combined with an increased student population and less parking space to work with, not to mention the chaos involved in the parking process itself, TAPS found the new online system necessary. The parking situation isn’t expected to get any better due to the goal for OSU administration for the student population to reach 35,000 by 2015. “It’s a very tough situation, so we’re really hopeful for this new system,” said Hank Kemper, TAPS Supervisor. Kemper has worked for 25 years at OSU, all of which have been in the TAPS department. Kemper states See TAPS | page 2
Valentine’s Day with pride n
Pride Center features activities for those celebrating in nonconventional manner By Annecy Beauchemin The Daily Barometer
All last week, up to today’s holiday, the Pride Center is taking a more inclusive approach to the holiday with their “Reclaiming Valentine’s Day” event. When ads, television and other media keep portraying happy heterosexual relationships around this holiday, it can be difficult for those in other types of relationships, from monogamous to polyamorous to single, and even including those of many genders and sexualities, to feel like it is a holiday for them, too. Amanda Wood, Pride Center activities coordinator, describes Reclaiming Valentine’s Day as “getting away from the idea that Valentine’s Day is for a Caucasian man and woman in a relationship.” The event, she says, is less about protesting Valentine’s Day than about opening it up to more people and taking the emphasis back away from consumerism, focusing on all the different forms love can take. “Getting away from the Hallmark idea of it,” Wood said. From 2 to 4 p.m. today, the Pride Center is offering food and craft supplies for any who want to visit

angered voters. The top three Republican leaders in the House released a statement saying they were prepared to remove the contentious payroll issue from a bill that would also extend unemployment benefits and prevent a fee cut to Medicare doctors — known as the “doc fix” — in order to “protect small businesses and our economy from the consequences of Washington Democrats’ political games.” “Unfortunately, to date, Democrats have refused virtually every spending cut proposed — insisting on job-threatening tax hikes on small businesses and job creators — and with respect to the need for an extension of the payroll tax cut, time is running short,” said the statement from House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Virginia, and House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy,

R-California. In the past, House GOP leaders have often struggled to get rank-and-file conservative members to go along with their decisions on spending issues — particularly when related to negotiations with Democrats. The fact that all three leaders issued the statement was seen by aides in both parties as a sign that they expect to be able to pass the bill without conservatives who might break with the leadership. House Republicans will meet in closed session Tuesday to discuss the proposal, which could be voted on in the House by the end of the week, the leaders said. Aides in both parties said they expect negotiations to continue on the so-called “doc-fix” and unemployment benefit extension. But they said removing the payroll issue from those talks should make it easier to reach agreement on them.

In a sharp turnaround, House Republican leaders Monday dropped a key demand that the cost of extending the payroll tax cut be offset by spending cuts elsewhere in the budget. The decision removes a major obstacle to passage of the tax cut extension for the rest of the year — a move that has been in question. Democrats called the GOP decision welcome news — a “major breakthrough,” according to a Democratic aide familiar with the negotiations — because the tax cut, which would otherwise expire February 29, is a key part of President Barack Obama’s economic recovery strategy. For Republicans, the move trims a thorny political issue. After nearly blocking an extension of the payroll tax cut late last year over concerns about how to pay for it, Republicans acknowledged they had

that parking has always been an issue. “We’re in a tough spot,” Kemper said. “We’re trying to accommodate the needs of the students and the needs of Corvallis.” OSU administrators are already talking to city officials about allowing students to park in certain areas of Corvallis. With the parking lot behind Wilson being eliminated for a new dorm, more parking tensions are expected to arise. “It’s always the north side of campus, where all the classes are,” Kemper said. According to Kemper, the eventual goal of this process is to actually make a pedestrian-core campus. In other words, the vast majority of people would be walking or biking, while cars would be parked on the very outer edges of
campus. “I think there can be a lot to gain in terms of providing better parking services for students. For the lack of spaces on campus, that’s a barrier that as a community we’ll need to figure out because it’s clear as day there needs to be more parking, and better and more means of transportation on campus like the Beaver Bus, Corvallis Transit System, OSU Shuttle, etc.,” Hopoi said. Though students who don’t drive are not affected by this, parents or friends who come visit are. Decreased parking means decreased convenience and more walking time. This is apparent during moving in and moving out periods. Select students from ASOSU represent the student interest section of the TAPS committee. There have also been several surveys sent out to gather data on this matter.

“I think it’s a horrible idea [to eliminate more parking], and they’re not really considering the current amount of students we have, just focused on cramming as many students in as much as possible,” said Joseph Chronise, thirdyear business major. Despite this negative reaction, Kemper assures current and future students that parking will be compensated. “When administrators plan these things, parking is on the low end of the totem pole. The resources and services the new buildings provide normally make up for it, but students need to actually be able to get to campus,” Kemper said. Physical, symbolic aspects of the heart V-Day, S Editorial

f you secretly admire someone on The Daily Barometer editorial staff, don’t be afraid to go for it. There’s an 83.3 percent chance that person is single. But the fact that we’re overworked and underloved isn’t why we hate Valentine’s Day. Our hate isn’t derived from the sight of an overly happy (or affectionate) couple, nor is it from one of those stupid “give and you shall receive” jewelry commercials. Our hate for the “holiday” derives from our pathetic, fellow single brethren. Seriously, if you are 45 and have never been married, it’s OK for you to sit in a dark room at home tonight and drink straight from a bottle of scotch. You can even get away with a miserable, “Look at me, I’m single” Facebook status. But if you’re a 20-something-yearold single college student? Stop. Feeling. Sorry. For. Yourself. Honestly, what do you think you are accomplishing by announcing to your Twitter followers that you are going to go see “The Vow,” get drunk in the back row and throw popcorn at all the happy couples and cry? That’s nothing but a desperate, unattractive plea for attention — no wonder you’re single. And when someone asks you how you’re going to spend Valentine’s Day, what good are you doing yourself by responding: “I’m going to wake up, watch (expletive), cry, then go on a run.” If you’re single, spend the day embracing that fact! Go buy a new Xbox game with the money you saved by virtue of being single. Or new clothes. Or a bottle of Patrón (as long as it’s drunk in a celebratory manner, not a feel-sorryfor-yourself manner). Embrace the fact that you didn’t have to agonize over what to buy your significant other. Or, if you were in a relationship at one time, remind yourself of all the downsides it came with. Trust us, it wasn’t as good as you may remember — memory has a way of perfecting the past. Or, quietly play this game throughout day: every time you see a couple you know, predict whether or not they’ll actually stay together long-term. If they’re just placeholders in each other’s lives, then be thankful for the fact that you’re not in that kind of relationship. Really, you’re a step ahead of those people. (Hopefully) someday, you won’t be single on Valentine’s Day. And when that day comes, you’ll appreciate it that much more. See? There are so many different, positive ways to approach today. Please, for everyone’s sake, take our advice and don’t be “that” single guy or girl. t

A non-traditional view Recently, it’s been discovered that the heart has a role in directing and aligning systems in the body. Other research has also suggested that the heart has its own independent nervous system of around 40,000 neurons, which has been referred to as “the brain in the heart.” Although we already know that the heart communicates with the brain neurologically, biochemically and biophysically, recent scientific evidence indicates the heart also communicates energetically through electromagnetic field interactions. This means that the heart has an intelligence all its own and that maybe love is really felt in the heart. Plato theorized that reasoning originated with the brain, but passion originated in the heart. It is obvious the heart plays an important role in our lives, whether we
are in love or not. Because the heart produces such a strong electromagnetic field, some suggest the heart can actually influence other people within proximity of three feet. In other words, the electromagnetic signal produced by your heart is registered in the brain of anyone close to you. This brings social communication to a whole new level. Here are a few more interesting things about the heart: A horse’s heart rate was recorded as mirroring those of human subjects that were touching him. When you sneeze, your heart stops. A woman’s heart generally beats faster than a man’s heart. A study of 2,500 men between the ages of 40 and 59 found that having an orgasm at least three times a week cut the likelihood of death by coronary disease by 50 percent. Here are a few interesting facts about love: Falling in love can induce a calming effect that can raise levels of nerve growth factors which help to restore the central nervous system.

get over it
even years ago today, I quit smoking. I quit on Valentine’s Day and I did it for my heart, so Valentine’s Day has a special meaning for me other than the traditional one. But if you think about it, there isn’t much difference in meaning between celebrating hearts in love or loving your heart. After all, the symbol for Valentine’s Day is the heart. And why the heart? The heart has been long associated with love because of how it responds to strong emotion. The Greeks believed the heart was the seat of the spirit. The Chinese associated the heart with the center of happiness. Even the ancient Egyptians believed emotions and intellect arose from the heart. Darwin once said, “You can’t love without the heart.” He wasn’t far off the mark; scientists have recently discovered that the heart may play a greater role in love than the brain. Neuroscientists have discovered that the heart is actually more complex than we first thought. For many decades, we have simply believed the heart’s primary and only function was to pump blood.
Love can exert the same stress on your body as fear. The oldest known love song was written 4,000 years ago. The average person falls in love about seven times before marrying. The longest married couple was from Taiwan; they were married 85 years. The heart has been rediscovered. For many centuries, scientists, philosophers, writers and doctors considered the heart as the center of man. Modern age proclaimed the heart as a simple pumping device, relegating it to the menial chore of pumping blood in and out. We idolized the brain, and placed the heart as a simple autonomous device – important, yes, but only in a mechanical way. Maybe the great men of ancient history knew better; maybe it does take heart to love. So even if there isn’t a special someone to celebrate with — take heart and go stand next to someone, because maybe your heart might just affect theirs. t

Letter to the Editor Benton still needs fixes
Same message every year One of the advantages of having spent 32 years at Oregon State University as a faculty member of the music department is having accumulated a fair amount of “institutional memory.” Thus, the two articles last week dealing with the decrepit state of Benton Hall were “déjà vu” all over again. Neither the sorry state of the building nor administration promises for improvement are new. I’ve seen the diagrams for the “new” performance art building that was going to be built in 1969. I’ve been through the process of coming up with a complete set of architect plans for a new music building adjacent to LaSells Stewart Center 20 years ago and 10 years ago. And I’ve heard repeated promises by different administrations that change was coming, but with the common caveat that “it’s a problem of funding.” Let me be brutally clear: It has never been a problem with funding. It has always been a problem of commitment and prioritization. The only time that repairs to Benton Hall were prioritized by an administration occurred many years ago when part of the roof fell to the ground precisely where Governor Vic
Atiyeh, one week before, had hosted the celebration for the opening of the Evans Electrical Engineering Building. We got a new roof almost immediately. Not only is there no real commitment from the administration, but it’s worse than that. When potential donors have been identified by various faculty members, including myself, we were ordered by the administration never to have any contact with that person again. The university had different priorities, and these donors seem to have been steered toward athletics or engineering. In the most recent case, a potential donor who promised to leave money in her will to music, will now have her name attached to the remodeled Education Hall. After 30 years at OSU, I have come to the conclusion that no matter how much we scold or cajole or embarrass any administration, there will be no new Performing Arts Building. We will be talking about this in 20 years, after the music department will have been “temporarily” moved to Waldo Hall. Nothing will change, and any promises from the administration for change should be dismissed as more sound and fury signifying BS. Michael T. Coolen Emeritus Professor of Music

ey ladies, for Valentine’s Day, would you like a candlelit dinner for two with the 6’2” dark-haired, browneyed, Ryan Reynolds to woo you? And perhaps, afterward, have him take you to a rose petal-covered bed, professing his love for you while holding a dish of chocolate covered strawberries shirtless? Sounds good, right? In fact, it sounds like the only thing missing is the Old Spice guy holding diamonds with “Let’s Get It On” playing in the background. Well, sadly, it’s more than likely your boyfriend isn’t Ryan Reynolds, and Mr. Old Spice is probably not going to show up either. But guys, you can still do something special for that special someone. I know what you’re thinking: “No one is that romantic anymore; I will get some chocolate and flowers and call it good. Being overly romantic is cliché and stupid.” I suppose it can be, but saying that is also an excuse for not doing anything cool or remotely clever. For those of you in relationships, why not make a fun night of it and shake it up a bit? Do something you haven’t done before, or do something you haven’t in a long time. And those of you who aren’t in relationships, and are still out there looking, even if you crash and burn, at least you can say you crashed and burned. Guys, take a shot, take a

The Daily Barometer chance. You already have an answer if you sit at home all night playing “Call of Duty.” At least get some flowers, write something nice and step up to the plate. Instead, play “Call of Booty.” You may not be Ryan Reynolds or Mr. Old Spice, but you can smell like them. Get that Old Spice, Axe or Bod spray, put on your Sunday shoes and spit some game. If you are concerned about awkward encounters, especially if you’re the nervous type, don’t go looking for them. Leave their gift someplace and go about your day. Don’t hover over your phone, or text them asking if they got it. Trust me, they did. Take note: Yellow roses are symbol of friendship. Women are all about meaning behind things, so if you are into them, give them red roses, not yellow. Gals, if the charming guy you’ve been hanging out with for the last year and a half hasn’t made his move yet, don’t worry too much; he still might be Mr. Right, just not Mr. Right Now. Don’t run to the couch with a pint of ice cream and “The Notebook” quite yet; there still might be time. Even if he never makes the move, please don’t mope around like a spinster; go out with some friends and do something fun. Any given day
is only as good as you make it, so make something good of it regardless of the things you have no control over. Also, guys, if you are in a relationship, do something serious for your girlfriend. Don’t do a last-minute thing because you procrastinated either. Make her feel special, since you’re with her because she is special, right? Let her remember that. Women like to hear that you love them, but they like it even more when you show them. Some people might say Valentine’s Day it’s the worst holiday of the year, and one might be inclined to agree with that sentiment, because it can be stressful and sometimes depressing. Guys, you can go running around for a gift she might not like. Gals, you might not get something from the man you wanted. Don’t play a game of “what ifs.” What if he doesn’t like me? What if she doesn’t like it? What if I mess up and get rejected? All of those things might happen, and at some point, they probably will — it is a part of life. If they do, don’t cry over spilled milk. It’s better to learn from these things than dwell on them forever. And in retrospect, some of our stories are actually kind of funny. Just learn from them, move on and keep in mind: good day or bad day, at least you still get chocolate. t

PEDERSON n Continued from page 5 There is so much competition and so much anguish about gift-giving and personal gestures that the entire framework of the holiday is shifted. Rather than a celebration of love and happiness, it has turned into an evaluation — an exam to determine if a relationship is strong enough, or if people really care about each other at all. It becomes about the self, rather than the other, and about proving oneself to an adored spouse, girlfriend or boyfriend. It should not have to be so intense. A true celebration of love between people or a couple should last longer than one day — such exhaustive efforts should not even be necessary in the first place. It is hard to say when this

kind of attitude and action regarding Valentine’s Day came about, because it does not rely on any kind of novel cultural standards, and the holiday is not specific to just one location (it is celebrated across the globe). But perhaps, as creepy as it might be, the Valentine’s Days of childhood can shed some light onto the chaotic and obsessive mess that is has become for couples in love. If one is in a relationship I am not advising them to make Valentines for everyone else and put themselves in serious trouble, but I would advise that people stop worrying about it so much and focus on the other person rather than themselves. After Christmas, Valentine’s Day is the biggest card-giving day of the year. But what is the differ-
ence between sending a significant other a text message saying “I love you!” on a random Wednesday in August, and a Hallmark card with little red hearts on Feb. 14? There is so much pressure, people become too preoccupied with what they are going to do and what they are going to get that the message can become blurred. And it is a simple message that everyone can understand. There are too many single (and married) people grouching about how evil Valentine’s Day is, and I do want to impart some spectrum of hope and good will regarding the holiday. So please, everyone, try and have a truly happy Valentine’s Day. t

Clashes erupt in Bahrain ahead of 1 year mark Police in Bahrain turned tear gas and rubber bullets on protesters who wanted to march from a Monday night demonstration on the outskirts of Manama toward a city landmark. About 2,000 people broke away from the main body of the protest and started to march toward the Pearl Roundabout, the focal point of pro-democracy protests that began a year ago Tuesday. Several people were injured on both sides as police forced them back, with some demonstrators hurling Molotov cocktails at police during the melee. In a statement issued late Monday, Gen.
Tariq Hassan al-Hassan, Bahrain’s public security chief, blamed “a large group of terrorists for the clashes. He said demonstrators were disrupting traffic on main streets and attacked police when they intervened and ordered the protesters to disperse. “They didn’t oblige and continued breaking the law, al-Hassan said. “Security forces had to deal with the situation legally to restore things into normal. In a joint statement, a coalition of opposition groups said they are conducting peaceful protests and warned that confrontations “would provide officials a scapegoat for not meeting legitimate demands of the people.
“The political societies consider dialogue as a strategic choice, something offered long time ago, they said. “However, any dialogue not meeting basic demands, such as people being the sources of all power, and not institutionalizing democracy is pointless and not feasible. More demonstrations are scheduled for Tuesday’s anniversary. Ahead of the event, Bahraini authorities deported two American human rights lawyers arrested at a demonstration over the weekend, the State Departmenwt and the activist group Witness Bahrain reported. —CNN
