As students rush to be presentable for their moms this weekend, local shops are gearing up for extra business. “This weekend has the largest economic impact in the community,” said Linda Howard, Memorial Union Program Council adviser. Howard expects that the Moms and Family Weekend comedy show at LaSells Stewart Center, which holds 2,400 seats, will be nearly sold out. MUPC has also invited more than 130 art festival vendors for Moms Weekend. Moms and Family Weekend allows businesses to make extra income with the extra people — and, thus, extra money — in town. “[Moms and Family Weekend] is the busiest weekend of the whole year,” said Cindy Tran, owner of Tokyo Japanese Steak House and Sushi Bar. A former OSU football player pleaded guilty Thursday to stealing DVDs from K-Mart and Grocery Outlet and to possession of heroin. Benjamin James Motter, 24, of Philomath, pleaded guilty to one count each of theft I, burglary I, robbery III and possession of heroin. In exchange, the Benton County District Attorney’s Office dismissed six counts of property and drug crimes in four different cases. Motter was sentenced by Judge William A. Locke to 36 months of formal probation with an eight-year suspended sentence. He must complete the Benton County Drug Treatment Court Program and have no contact with any of the victims involved in these cases. “I am extremely sorry for my actions and am grateful to the court for giving me a chance to turn my life around,” Motter said. Police arrested Motter on April 5 after he stole two backpacks and 69 DVDs — worth more than $1,000 — from K-Mart and a reusable bag full of DVDs from Grocery Outlet, where he had a scuffle with an employee. Motter also broke into a home and stole Xbox games and controllers. He tried to sell his bounty to the local Gamestop, which reported the attempt to police. After the arrest, a search warrant was issued for his red Ford Explorer, where authorities found baggies with heroin residue and a Nike bag containing a digital scale, bent spoon, used and unused cotton swabs, tourniquet and used syringes. His attorney Robert Corl Jr. said he is a “young man who has done very well with his education and athletics” and had “used Oxycodone as a form of medical treatment for a lower spine injury.” After his prescription ran out, he discovered that heroin was cheaper, Corl said. That led to “incredibly poor judgement.” “Should he not comply with the conSee Motter | page 2

We always come to the fair they have here. It reminds us of the Saturday Market that goes on in Portland.
