Making change Looking forward ASOSU President Rachel Grisham aims to transform organization

ASOSU Vice President Brett Morgan seeks to better students’ futures

One of the first pieces of legislation that newly elected ASOSU President Rachel Grisham helped author after taking office was to reduce the pay that her, the vice president and the speaker of the house would receive.

Already fulfilling one of her campaign promises to lower the stipends on several positions within the student government to allow the funds to be used elsewhere in a more productive manner, Grisham had only been in office for a few weeks, but she meant business.

Outside of ASOSU, this tenacity is prevalent throughout Grisham’s life.

The president of her sorority, Sigma Delta Omega, as well as a sitting member on several committees throughout campus, Grisham is no stranger to involvement and leadership roles.

Now in her fifth year, the public health policy and management major is also pursuing three minors—French, political science and business administration.

Grisham explained that her diverse academic load is derived from her intense interests in a wide variety of fields.

“I have a lot of interests, I have a really hard time focusing on one subject, and I like mixing a whole bunch of things together. I think that creates a unique perspective,” Grisham said.

“If I could do it, I would take a class in every field here.”

Although she was not normally one to put herself out there, Grisham said the choice to run for president came from a desire to see substantial change within the organization.

“I was really tired of seeing where ASOSU was going, and I thought it needed a lot of change at the foundation level,” Grisham said.

Grisham knew that if she was elected, she could bring about tangible change on campus.

Six months later, Grisham and her vice president Brett Morgan have hit the ground running.

According to Morgan, their goofy senses of humor drew them together, but their friendship really took off after Grisham approached him to run on the ticket with her.

“Due to the stress of the campaign, Rachel and I grew really close because we were literally spending 10 to12 hours a day when not in class or barely sleeping campaigning together,” Morgan said. “Our goofy humor also came back—both Rachel and I use humor as a way to work through stress.”

Despite not knowing Morgan on a deeper

level before the campaign, Grisham approached him to run with her after deciding his values and ideals complimented hers nicely. “(When she approached me) I had really sworn off the idea of being ASOSU President or vice president just because I was so busy outside ASOSU and was lacking political efficacy in the organization,” Morgan said. Yet immediately, Morgan realized that there was potential for real change to happen if he paired with Grisham.

“When she approached me to run I could tell it was from a place of wanting to make a difference and help others—not for a title or power,” Morgan said. “Rachel does the work she does because she believes in what she can do for others and not what the position or positions can do for her.”

Darren Nguyen, a senior in business management, was hired by Grisham and Morgan as the ASOSU Directors of Community Resources earlier this summer, but his relationship with Grisham goes back over a year.

Nguyen has always admired the way in which Grisham works, and the ways in which she manages her staff.

“I’ve been a better student leader and person because of Rachel,” Nguyen said.

Both Nguyen and Morgan say that Grisham’s most redeeming quality is her authenticity.

“I believe that Rachel is so heavily involved with everything she does is because she genuinely wants to bring everyone else up around her,” Nguyen said. “Whether that be through sisterhood, being a student leader, or even preparing herself to be the best individual in the future through education.”

In her final year at OSU, Grisham has a lot on her plate between now and graduation.

“I’m very excited to be ending my time at OSU with so many awesome opportunities.

I’m so lucky to be so engaged until the end,” Grisham said.

After Grisham graduates this year, she plans on attending graduate school—the dream being the University of North Carolina—to continue developing her passion for public health.

When not in the office, Grisham enjoys reading and playing her saxophone, fondly named “Skittles.”

One thing has remained constant for Brett Morgan during his college career—using his power for good.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to be in few positions where I have power,” said Morgan, the current Vice President of the Associated Students of Oregon State University. “I’ve tried my hardest to do the best things with that power, and do what’s the right thing in my eyes.”

Morgan’s passion for student government slowly formulated throughout his college career. He first wanted to study engineering, stemming from his love of building and creating.

“I loved Legos and Kinects—I still love them, and when my cousins come over I’ll play with them,” Morgan said. “Building things was always really fun to me. It changed though when I realized I was only okay, but not great, at math and science.”

After tabling the idea of becoming an engineer, Morgan became involved with environmental sciences his freshmen year at OSU, but soon realized his major would be more effective when paired with economics.

“Environmental science and economics are compatible, and economics study how you make decisions for the best for the environment on a huge scale,” Morgan said.

Morgan soon discovered a passion for politics when he took the U-Engage course Introduction to Oregon Politics, leading him to found College Democrats at OSU his freshmen year, and later moving into the position of ASOSU Executive Director of Government relations a year later.

“I wanted to make sure Brett was on our team because I knew he was going to have a bright future at ASOSU, and he demonstrated that,” said Taylor Sarman, former ASOSU president. “He was a key player in helping us to get more funding for higher education, and was integral for helping us register voters.”

Morgan took a break from ASOSU his sophomore year to serve as Vice President of his fraternity, Phi Kappa Psi, as well as joining the campus club Oregon Climate and tutoring economics.

Although Morgan thought he had finished his involvement with ASOSU, the remainder of his OSU career set into motion when he was approached by Rachel Grisham at the end of last fall term, asking him if he wanted to run as

“When she asked me I told her that I’d think about it, but I think I knew right when she asked me that I wanted to say yes,” Morgan said. “I didn’t want to seem too eager.”

Morgan eventually accepted Grisham’s offer, and over the remainder of the year the candidates geared for election.

“Up until two months before we ran, I had no intention of running. It just fell into my lap,” Morgan said. “I’m really grateful it did happen.”

According to Anesat Leon-Guerrero, ASOSU Executive Director of Diversity Programs, working for close to four months in Morgan’s new position has allowed him to explore his view of the world and how that affects his decisions.

“I appreciate that Brett acknowledges the privileges that he holds as a white, cisgendered male,” Leon-Guerrero said. “Every time he talks about a certain issue, whether political, environmental or economical, he states that his perception is coming from his experience as a white man.”

Morgan hopes to extend ASOSU’s ability to be a resource for students through their platform, which focuses on inclusivity, affordability and community safety. The student government will also be paying more attention to its 1.5 million dollar budget, and has already been able to incur about $40,000 in budgetary savings this year.

“We are really trying to make sure every dollar we spend is being spent in the best way possible,” Morgan said. “Those things are the most tangible things we can work on now to better years to come.”

Looking towards the future has always been one of Morgan’s strengths, according to Sarman.

“Brett has a really good understanding of futuristic thinking, and thinking about what he and an organization does now is going to have ramifications for the future,” Sarman said.

Through his work at ASOSU, his fraternity and just being an OSU community member, Morgan strives to better the campus as a whole—even after he graduates.

“I want to leave a legacy that any student can walk in through ASOSU’s doors or any other doors and feel like they have an impact,” Morgan said.

Focusing on the survivor Resources are available on campus to help victims of sexual violence cope, overcome

S

exual assault is an epidemic on college campuses nationwide.

One in five women, and one in 16 men have been a victim of sexual assault while in college, according to The Washington Post-Kaiser Family Foundation Survey of College Students on Sexual Assault. For survivors of sexual assault knowing what to do, or who to talk to, can be terrifying.

Oregon State University has services in place to help survivors make the right decisions following an assault.

Sexual Assault Support Services at OSU are available free of charge for students, are confidential and include the Survivor Advocacy Resource Center, a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner and Counseling and Psychological Services.

SARC is often a survivor’s first point of contact after an attack. Walking into SARC posters on the wall read “Love shouldn’t hurt” and “There are no grey areas in consent,” accompanied by hand written statements of support for survivors on paint canvas that say such things as “I believe the survivor” and “You are brave.”

“Our primary goal is to give people a safe and confidential place to talk,” said Judy Neighbours, licensed psychologist and SARC associate director. “From here we can identify what survivors need next.”

Employees of SASS, SARC, SANE and CAPS are classified at OSU as confidential employees. Unlike non-confidential employees, they are not required by law to report acts of sexual violence to law enforcement. This allows the survivor to make an informed decision about what they choose to do going forward.

In addition to the option of seeing a SANE or seeking counseling through CAPS, a survivor can also report the inci-

dent to law enforcement.

“This is their life, this is their story, and it should be their choice what happens to them,” Neighbours said.

Although always an option, Neighbours said many survivors choose not to report sexual assault to law enforcement.

“Most of the people I talk to don’t come forward and report it. The studies out there are also suggesting that 85 to 95 percent of survivors aren’t reporting to authorities,” Neighbours said.

“Our goal is to give them options and help them make an informed decision going forward, whether it be reporting or receiving treatment.”

Even with so many assaults going unreported Neighbours said an alarming amount of people are still being assaulted. The rate is even higher among marginalized communities and first year students.

If a survivor does require medical attention SANE nurse Kelly Kendall is specially trained in sexual assault cases involving both men and women.

“I think we have a really good system in place to provide support for survivors,” Kendall said. “When someone comes in and reports an assault we believe them.”

Kendall can also help a survivor make decisions on whether to report to law enforcement.

Survivors have options when it comes to medical attention. They can have an examination done that does or doesn’t include a rape kit.

If they do want a kit administered, they can have it filed with law enforcement or file an anonymous kit. When a survivor files an anonymous kit it stays on file with authorities for at least six months and longer if they have room in storage.

This gives the survivor the opportunity to file a report with law enforcement at a later date.

“It’s not our job to decide if there was an assault, that’s up to the legal system,” Kendall said. “We try and remove any language of them being at fault.”

In a society filled with victim blaming many survivors feel marginalized and experience fear, loss of trust, shock, shame, anger, self blame, numbness, depression and loss of self control, according to Neighbours.

“They don’t think people will believe them and they think people will blame them,” Neighbours said.

According to Erika Patterson, licensed psychologist and SASS coordinator, this is where CAPS can step in and help.

“Just come and talk to someone here and we can work together to determine their recovery needs,” Patterson said. “We are very invested in supporting survivors.

We try to meet them where they are and make sure they have access to service.”

CAPS has a qualified staff with over ten counselors that are trained to work with survivors of sexual assault. Counselors can help determine what the best course of action is, which may include, but is not limited to, individual and group counseling sessions.

“The good news is survivors can recover,” Patterson said. “Sexual and interpersonal violence is never the fault of the survivor.”

Neighbours couldn’t agree more.

“We believe you. We know this is not your fault. You are not alone.”

Treston Decoud Beaver cornerback returns from injury to lead OSU’s defense

reston Decoud was messed up bad. He just didn’t know it.

The Beavers were in the midst of last year’s 2-10 season, when he was in his first year with his fourth school. Things finally had seemed to settle down for Decoud, who had earned the Division-I starting cornerback spot he wanted for so long.

Then the Colorado game happened on Oct. 24, 2015.

Decoud went sprawling on a tackle in the second quarter, inadvertently slamming into fellow cornerback Dwayne Williams. He blacked out, remained unconscious for about six minutes and was rushed to the hospital.

He was able to return to the locker room before the game ended, but the problems had only just started for Decoud. Even with the help of fellow defensive back Devin Chappell, Decoud was barely able to walk back to his apartment that night.

“With that concussion, that was a bad week,” Decoud said. “Thank God for Devin Chappell.

He had me. If he hadn’t helped me, I don’t know if I would be still here. That concussion was bad for me. I still think about that.”

The following day, Decoud went to practice.

He put on some tennis shoes and a hat, knowing he wouldn’t be allowed to play yet.

The problem was, the Beavers weren’t practicing the Sunday after a game. Decoud had showed up all by himself, too fuzzy to realize what was going on.

“When I really realized it was when I stepped on the field and nobody was here,” Decoud said. “No coaches, no trainers, no nothing. And then I started thinking, ‘Dang, why is nobody here?’ And then I finally was like, ‘Oh, I did just get knocked out yesterday.’”

It didn’t stop there. Soon after, he saw assistant coach Mitch Singler and didn’t even recognize him. Singler had to tell him about the encounter later, which Decoud had no memory of. Then, he walked to his Tuesday class on Monday and didn’t realize it was the wrong day.

“I was sitting there for 10 or 20 minutes,” Decoud said. “I was like, ‘Well, I guess she ain’t coming to class.’ It was a bad week. I’m glad that’s over with.”

Decoud acknowledges he may not have gotten through it without Chappell, who still remembers Decoud’s injury and its aftermath vividly.

“I remember being on the field,” Chappell said. “I thought I was going to start crying. I didn’t know what was going on. I didn’t know if he was going to ever be able to play football again. That was my roommate. We stay up late talking about dreams and things like that, so to see my dog laying down with his feet not moving, I was terrified. I was thinking about that the whole game.”

Chappell walked Decoud home—the two room together on road trips but Decoud lives alone in Corvallis—and made sure Decoud was taken care of.

“I remember walking him home, him leaning on me and I’m carrying him on my shoulder,” Chappell said. “People were trying to talk to him and I’m like, ‘Get away, get away.’ I didn’t tuck him in or nothing, but I took him home and made sure he was okay. I was calling him throughout the next couple days, letting him

know if he needed anything that I’d be there for him. I was just trying to be someone he could lean on if he needed anything.”

Chappell’s efforts helped, but Decoud was still struggling. He couldn’t leave his apartment, nor could watch film of his games. He was barely functioning, yet aware enough to realize the pain he was in.

“It was a blurry time in my life,” Decoud said.

“It was like my head was in a whole different place. It was scary. I swear to God it was scary.

I used to cry every night because my head was hurting. I couldn’t watch TV, I couldn’t do nothing. Any light or noise made my head hurt. It was a bad two weeks.”

Thoughts about quitting football crept in.

The Covington, LA. native insists he never was that close to making the decision to walk away from football, but he considered it. He was tired of feeling hurt, tired of losing games, tired of seeing his family back home knowing he was struggling through the season.

“In my mind, I didn’t want to quit football, but I was second guessing it,” Decoud said.

“It was just something in my head like, ‘Is this really what I want?’ But this is what I want. I love this game. I’d die for it.”

Things didn’t flip automatically, but Decoud gradually got better. After two or three weeks of rest, he got back to about 100 percent. The fuzziness cleared, and Decoud was mostly back to normal. He missed two games but came back for the last three, recording 23 tackles with a sack—his highest totals in any three-game stretch.

Again, much of the credit goes to Chappell.

“We have similar stories and similar pasts,” Chappell said. “I just always told him, ‘make sure you make the right decisions for yourself.

Take care of your family. Your momma’s got to eat, too.’ Just remind him about the things that are really important, remind him of the big picture. For us, it’s not just about us. We’ve got families. I always remind him, ‘Hey, we’re not doing this just for us.’”

Chappell started at Western Oregon, transferring to OSU in 2014 as a walk-on. For being a team captain now, he doesn’t have the most glorious of backstories. Neither does Decoud.

He earned some Division-I interest while at Lakeshore High School in Louisiana, but academic problems halted that dream. He detoured to Division-II Chadron State in Nebraska, redshirted in 2012 and made just four tackles in 2013.

When his mother, Chandrika, was diagnosed with lung cancer, he knew he had to move closer to home. He transferred to Nicholls State, earned a starting spot there before learning the NCAA denied his request to play immediately after transferring. He went to Northwest Mississippi Community College, nabbing six interceptions and earning the title of No. 4 ranked Junior College cornerback in the nation. He had played well enough to earn a ticket to a Division-I school.

Best of all, his mother made a full recovery.

Now, she’s “100 percent” healthy. Decoud talks with his mom and dad every day on FaceTime.

It keeps him connected to Louisiana, but he’s glad he’s not there anymore.

“You never know when this game is going to be over,” he said. “I don’t know if I’m going to the (NFL). I hope I will. I got dreams, but

you never know. Today could be my last practice. Overcoming those obstacles helped me become a better person and better man.”

“That’s the test of Treston: he’s upbeat and he’s very positive, but you have doubts,” added cornerbacks coach Cory Hall on Decoud’s adversities. “You have to understand, we all have those doubts. Those are never going to go away. It’s about how you defeat the mental monster and how you bounce back. I think Treston has done a good job of that.”

Now, Decoud is more than just healthy. The 6-foot-3, 208-pounder has dominated opposing wide receivers so far this season. The quarterback rating on passes thrown his direction (7.4) is the lowest of all Pac-12 cornerbacks through week four. He had two interceptions in the Idaho State game, including a 75-yard touchdown return. He was named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week and ended OSU’s 22-game streak without a cornerback recording a pick.

“Football is his everything, and that shows in both the highs and lows of the game,” said coach Hall. “He wears it on his sleeve, and players feed off that either way. His leadership has been paramount.”

“I’m ecstatic for him,” Chappell added after the Idaho State game. “He set the bar high for himself. I told him right after that: ‘I expect nothing less.’ I know he expects nothing less for me. So I told him: ‘Don’t get too comfortable, because I’m coming for you.’ We always have a lot of friendly competition.”

With Decoud in a much better spot than he was one year ago, he can look to the future.

He’s still focused on his senior year at OSU, but he also realizes that his current successes are opening the door for future possibilities.

“What motivates me is when I come to practice and see an NFL coach watching,” Decoud said. “Or I’m watching TV and I see somebody get a huge contract. That motivates me because I want to be in that position where I can feed my family for a lifetime. My number one goal is to help my family out.”

And of course, that future will include Chappell. The pair’s friendship is more than just about about the lows. Now that both are starters in the defensive backfield and healthy, they too can focus on the difficulties of what they’ve been through and the good that’s come out of it.

“I consider him like a brother,” Chappell said. “I didn’t always relate to everybody else because we have a lot of different stories.

When he came in, we clicked up pretty quick.

We hang out on the weekends. We go out and have fun. That’s my boy and I care for him.

I firmly believe our friendship will continue long after college.”

“I used to dream of playing D-I,” added Decoud. “I used to dream of running out of the tunnel and the big time crowd. Me and my homeboys talk about that now. Just to have that actually happen, it’s like a movie to me.

I really feel like I’m playing a role in a movie.

I love that role.”

As station manager, there is so much I look forward to this year at KBVRFM; a new training protocol for our DJs (we just rolled it out this week, and already seeing benefits), a podcasting program about to begin training our first cohort of editors and producers, and a diversified series of sports broadcasts going beyond just OSU Football and Basketball.

Cassette, our music blog at Orange Media Network, is what I’m personally thrilled about.

At its heart, Cassette is just a music blog from OMN: music impacting the radio station, the campus and the PNW; features from OSU students, athletes and faculty; editorials about elements of the music industry and the way millennials and the modern era of music shape one another. The important bit is that Cassette will stand apart - our goal is to make this blog an accessible tap house for music lovers and new-to-tunes people alike.

Music blogs are so often tied to the hipster culture, and I hope we can dispel that to some degree with Cassette. Just like treading through coursework, music

blogs require practiced reading, and in the beginning, time spent dwelling in the confusion of the content covered. This new digital space for FM will work to bridge that divide to bring all members of our community to the table, and connect them down the line to other music resources beyond Corvallis.

Radio is such a strange medium, having no visual or literary element. In that way, I like to think of cassette this way - a bulletin board for all things music, through the eyes of Oregon State students, written in a way that allows all to engage in the content—no experience required.

Music and Sports Athletes inspired, influenced by their pre­­-game playlists

By Sarah Bestor FM Music Director Ask any athlete and I can guarantee that they will tell you yes, music is important to them. Their headspace and the mood they are in before and going into the game is greatly influenced by the music they listen to.

Breanna Brown, the 6’3” center and forward on the Oregon State Women’s Basketball team, does not disagree.

“Music is definitely important before games because it sets the whole mood for pretty much battle,” Brown explained.

For Brown specifically, music is something that gets her hyped. She often plays E40, hip hop and upbeat music in general.

Growing up in Oakland, California, Brown describes the music scene in her hometown as a movement more than anything.

This movement has influenced her musical tastes, as E40 is big in Oakland.

As a team, the last thing they do before each game is have Brown pick one song and they

have a dance party. It’s often a new song, but sometimes if one song has previously gotten them especially pumped, it’ll make the rounds again. Big Sean’s I Don’t (Mess) With You is one such example. Brown said that they’ll even sing as a team. They enjoy Adele, as well as Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.

“It’s slower, but it’s still got a little beat to it,” Brown said. “When you’re in there, it sounds kind of good, but I’m sure everybody outside is like ‘Somebody stop them.’”

But there are songs that sometimes just can’t get them going. Usually it is either a song that not everyone likes, or a song that just is not vibing with the team. In this case, Brown will then change it, and if she cannot find anything, “When in doubt, Beyonce it out,” is her motto.

And I’d have to agree, who doesn’t get pumped and ready when jamming to Beyonce?

Dr. Grotzinger is the Fletcher Jones Professor and Chair of the Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences at CalTech. He served at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory as Director of the Mars Science Lab mission from 2006-2014. Elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2002, he is well known for his work on Precambrian sedimentary rocks, especially from the “Snowball Earth” period, for studying the chemical development of the early oceans and atmosphere.

Handsome Ghost Band’s electrically calm vibe makes them one not to miss

Not much has made its way all the way from Vermont to the Pacific Northwest, other than maybe Bernie Sanders, but Handsome Ghost is a band well worth your attention from the small East Coast state.

They give off a spacey 90’s electronic vibe. The front man Tim Noyes is originally a folk musician, who took his indie folk songs and added an electronic sound to create Handsome Ghost.

In 2015, Handsome Ghost released a song, “Blood Stutter,” that would change the band’s life. This song has over 13 million plays on Spotify and during the year of 2015, Handsome Ghost toured playing this song that most people knew.

While on his 2015 tour playing songs from their EP Steps, a new project was in the works.

Handsome Ghost’s debut LP, The Brilliant Glow (released September 2016), highlights Noyes’ song writing ability.

I would describe the lyrics as magical; with lines like “Night drives and wrong turns,” it portrays perfectly my experience of growing up in a small town where there wasn’t much to do, so we would drive around until there were no more streets to find.

Then “Say you love me til it hurts,”speaks to

the kind of young love that leads to infatuation and pain.

Handsome Ghost spent some time opening for The Summer Set in the spring of 2016. This is where I found them. I had heard—as many others had—their song Blood Stutter, and fell for them even harder when I saw them live.

Live, Handsome Ghost has an approachable and calm vibe about them. At this show they covered Sex // The 1975. They slowed this song down and made it their own. This intrigued me, because yes, they covered a well-known song, but it sounded wildly different from the original version.

Nayes’ voice is a sound I would be very okay with falling asleep to every night.

Currently, the band is beginning its tour of the US, playing shows in places ranging from LA to Columbus.

If you find yourself around any of the places Handsome Ghost is playing—because sadly they are not playing in Oregon—I’d highly recommend attending. Especially if you want to relax and find yourself in an almost dream state.
