THE COSTS OF FALLFEST

Whether you love or hate the lineups, WVU pays hundreds of thousands of dollars annually on FallFest, its biggest party of the year.

DA Editor Douglas Soule learned the costs of FallFest between 2010 and 2017 after submitting Freedom of Information Act requests.

Out of those years, WVU spent the most - $791,000 - in 2013. That year’s FallFest lineup featured Pretty Lights, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Ciara, Capital Cities and Colt Ford. The 2019 lineup will be announced just before August event.

SIMMONS’ TOUCHDOWN CATCH ‘A LONG TIME COMING’

Sports writer Chris Jackson gave the background on the key play in WVU’s first game of the season. It was a play that was not even intended for sophomore receiver T.J. Simmons. He caught a pass from senior quarterback Will Grier, ran to the left and then up the field, going around five Tennessee defenders and down the sideline for an electric 59-yard score. WVU won 40-14.

Using Freedom of Information requests, the DA learned that more than 160,000 alcoholic beverages were sold in Milan Puskar Stadium during WVU’s 2017 football season. Biggest seller: Bud Lite. The sales helped fund the athletic department’s $93 million budget. “That helps us pay for our student athletes to go to school here, for their scholarships, for their equipment, for their travel, things of that nature,” said Associate Athletic Director for Communications Michael Fragale.

DOCUMENTS DETAIL REPORTED VIOLATIONS BY GREEKS

Reporter Jared Serre and News Editor Joe Severino filed Freedom of Information Act requests to obtain information on reported conduct violations by WVU Greek organizations on campus in the three previous academic years. The information was used by a working group of students, faculty and representatives of national Greek organizations who made recommendations for the community through a program called Reaching the Summit. Of all of the reported violations, the most common area was relating to social event procedure. These offenses included, but were not limited to, noise complaints, buildings over occupancy and hosting unregistered events.

Anyone who went to a WVU football game last fall saw Charles Hayes, better known as ‘the dancing guy.’ It never fails. Every game the dance cam pans to his section. He always manages to hype up the stadium, no matter the score. This year the DA named Hayes one of its “Most Influential.”

“If I can support the Mountaineers with a little boost of dance, I will gladly do it every single time,” Hayes told DA Assistant Culture Editor Rachel Johnson.

Hayes went to every home game this year, as well as the WVU vs. Tennessee game in Charlotte. Hayes said camera time is not his main goal. “My main goal is to support the Mountaineers.”

FRATERNITY-RELATED WRONGFUL DEATH CASE SETTLED FOR $3 MILLION

Administrators of the estate of Nolan Burch, the WVU student who died during a fraternity-related pledge event in 2014, agreed to settle its wrongful death case for $3 million, according to court documents.

The 10-page document containing the terms of the settlement was apparently under court-approved seal in Monongalia County Circuit Court, but was obtained by the Daily Athenaeum. Theron J. Burch and Kimberly Burch, Nolan Burch’s parents, received just under $2 million in the settlement, according to the redacted documents which are posted on thedaonline.com.

What began as a snow day turned into a snow riot on Spruce Street Feb. 1, when between 750 and 900 people were dispersed by Morgantown police.

“We had winter sports activities that turned into criminal behavior and violence,” said Morgantown Police Chief Ed Preston. “They started attacking city workers as they plowed the streets.” Preston said the crowd threw items including beer bottles and rocks.

The DA used a Freedom of Information Act request to obtain body cam footage taken by WVU Police. Morgantown Police, which declared the gathering a riot, used pepper balls, smoke grenades and a long-range acoustic device for dispersal. On March, 11 people were served arrest warrants for their involvement.

MEET TIMMY EADS, 2019-2020 MOUNTAINEER

In the middle of the WVU men’s basketball triple-overtime victory over TCU Feb. 26, Timmy Eads, a sophomore public relations student from Buffalo, West Virginia, was named WVU’s 66th Mountaineer mascot.

“I’m on top of the world,” Eads said. “It really is something I’ve dreamed of for a long time just to have the opportunity to represent the state and the University over the next year on a daily basis.”

MORGANTOWN ISSUED $1.3 MILLION IN PARKING TICKETS

If you have a car on campus, chances are pretty good that you will probably get a parking ticket before you leave. The DA reported that the Morgantown Parking Authority issued nearly 160,000 parking citations totaling just under $1.3 million from January 2016 to December 2018.

The largest amount of citations given in one month in this time period was in April 2016, when MPA issued 6,134 tickets, which add up to $53,152.50, according to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.

WVUENGAGE helps students adjust to campus life Finding your “home” on campus can make your entire college experience easier.

It can be intimidating starting your college career, especially at a school as large as WVU, but with nearly 500 student-led organizations you are guaranteed to find a group where you belong. Keep in mind, just about everyone else is also looking for friends to hang with or remembers what it was like to be the new guy. You’ll find just about everyone is welcoming.

“Getting involved is incredibly important as a first-year student,” said Kim Harrison, assistant director of Student Engagement and Leadership.

“Being engaged will not only contribute to your enjoyment of life on campus, it will also help you in the classroom,” said Harrison. “It’s been shown students who excel in the classroom are fully engaged outside of the classroom.” So what do you want to do? Interested in training

service dogs? Want to help put on a TEDx talk on campus? Do you like to sing? Are you a gamer? Love anime, astronomy or Latin dancing? The options are endless. Check them out at wvuengage.wvu.edu.

The WVUENGAGE system is an searchable database that allows students to search WVU campus organizations. It makes it easy for the organizations to explain what they do, advertise events and provide contact information.

Harrison recommends considering some of the cultural and service organizations.

“They are some of the largest and most active groups on campus,” she said. “It’s a great way to give back to the community and learn about a new culture.”

Still looking? Check out the more than 50 club sports at the student Rec Center web site. From archery to water skiing and just about everything in between (hip hop, quidditch, paintball), there is a group of enthusiastic students waiting for you.

And if your favorite sport isn’t already an organized activity, it’s easy to start a club yourself.

"Many of our club sport participants enjoy the opportunity to either continue playing a sport they enjoyed in high school or to try something completely new and make new friends along the way,” said Andy Darling, director of Campus Recreation.

Darling says the clubs range from those that are primarily instructional to those that represent WVU around the country including WVU’s Club Cricket Team which won the 2019 American College Cricket National Championships in April.

And we haven’t even mentioned Greek life at WVU. It includes nationally-affiliated sororities and fraternities as well as a variety of service and major-related Greek organiza-

tions. Greeklife.wvu.edu can answer your questions and if not, the friendly staff of the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life is always happy to help.

“Going Greek is an unparalleled leadership opportunity where you will learn, develop, grow and mix with company with so many people,” said Matthew Richardson, director of Fraternity and Sorority Life at WVU. “At 32 years of age, I still hang out and vacation with my fraternity brothers and consider them my closest friends and allies. I wish this kind of warm association for all of you.”

Richardson said to join a social fraternity or sorority, students must have a 2.75 overall GPA and have earned at least 12 credit hours. (AP/ IB college in high school credits do not count.)

“We believe in responsible social engagement, an appreciation for diversity and inclusion and are committed to service and philosophy” Richardson said. “Go Greek.”

The best thing you can do as a freshman is get involved.

Try out a few different organizations, attend some meetings, and find your fit. The more involved you become, the more you will gain out of your college experience.

Being new to a large campus may be daunting, but one thing you shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t worry about is taking advantage of all the resources here at WVU. After all, they are funded by your tuition dollars. Hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a look at some pretty amazing services that are mostly free and available to you.

THE STUDENT HEALTH CENTER If you are feeling under the weather, you wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have your family to take care of you, but the Student Health Center is the next best thing. Student health not only offers check-ups if you are sick but also offers a variety of sexual health services. They provide STI & STD screenings, family planning, and HIV testing. They will bill your private insurance. Along with student health is Mountaineer Pharmacy. Here you can purchase the drugs prescribed to you by the doc doctors at student health. Student health is located across from the Towers on Evansdale.

THE REC CENTER

The Rec Center is another great place to enhance your overall wellbeing. Hosting a variety of free classes, ranging from yoga to Zumba, exercise machines, free weights, a rock climbing wall, two pools, and a multitude of basketball and racquet ball courts, there is something for everyone. Along with all of these amenities that are free for students, outdoor recreation equipment can be rented from the rec center at a very low cost. The best ways to find time for exercise is to schedule it just as you would a class or join a free club sport.

THE CARRUTH CENTER

At WVU we not only care about your physical well-being but also your mental health. The Carruth Center offers psychiatric and counseling services to assist students during their transition into college as well as assistance during self-exploration throughout your four years. Frequent student issues the center treats are anxiety, identity issues, trouble with roommates or traumatic events such as assault. The Carruth Center handles it all with care and concern. Initial sessions are free.

CAREER SERVICES

As a freshman, you may not think that career planning is that important yet. But the folks at Career Services want to see you as soon as you land on campus. They can help you decide on a career as well as chart a series of events and internships that will ensure you get the job you want after graduation. Events include university-wide career fairs, interviews to sharpen your skills and resume and cover letter reviews to make sure you have included everything employers are seeking. Center counselors can help you snag an internship early in your college career so you can make sure that the job you are preparing for is one you really want.

College radio at West Virginia University isn’t just a chance to hone skills that will help you throughout your entire life; you might just meet your best friends in the process. This isn’t your father’s radio station.

WVU’s college radio station, celebrating its 37th year, has something for everybody: whether you are a broadcasting student, a journalism major, looking to hone the type of skills that you can use for the rest of your life, or simply looking for a place to call your own.

Why you should listen to college radio Who We Are First hitting the airwaves in 1982, U92 is “perhaps the most diverse extracurricular activity on campus,” according to former U92 Sports Director Mike Wagenheim, a 2001 graduate, former Division I play-by-play commentator, and news correspondent stationed in Israel. U92 exists in the most peculiar of Venn Diagrams: It brings together underground, alternative and traditional college radio musicians and enthusiasts as well as future broadcasters and journalists who hone their craft under the tutelage of professional staff and the ready assistance of thousands of successful alumni.

“U92 is the reason I stayed at WVU,” said Adam Crowley, a former U92 Sports Rookie of the Year. “I met my best friends at the station. I didn’t know a group of people that was so diverse could get along until I worked there.” Crowley, now a full-time radio host for ESPN Radio Pittsburgh, is 2013 WVU alumnus.

What We Do U92 is a 24/7 radio station that is, at bare minimum, always spinning the newest tunes (okay, not many records as in the past), updating campus on the sports and news of the day, and bringing live sporting events, talk shows and remote broadcasts to the campus community. The content is entirely student-generated. The music staff identifies underexposed music you won’t hear on traditional commercial radio stations. Some of these bands remain small, but some of them become household names: The Killers, The Avett Brothers, The War on Drugs, Radiohead, The Strokes, and Courtney Barnett are all vintage college radio bands from different eras. You don’t need to be an expert on any one genre or any one band to be a U92 DJ. In fact, what you really need, is an open mind.

The sports department covers women’s soccer, women’s basketball, baseball and club hockey.

They broadcast every home game, deliver on-the-hour updates and host talk shows and podcasts each week.

Our news department provides hourly updates and hosts in-depth and hard-hitting programs.

These students supplement the skills they learn in class with experience in the field reporting, interviewing and writing.

Where We’re Going U92 spent 37 years in the Mountainlair. If you ask an alum, they’ll tell you their fond stories of working in U92’s cramped but cozy confines.

While respecting U92’s culture and tradition, the radio station is raising the funds needed to move into a new state-of-the-art space. After this move, student media will better serve the WVU community as a multimedia organization while helping train young broadcasters journalists, and sales and marketing staffers for an evolving industry.

“This station helped shape me into the woman I am today,” former DJ and 2011 alum Zabrina Evans said. “Let’s help the next generation.” Join us in being a part of that next generation.

“And you might just make some lifelong friendships in the process,” Crowley said.
