Trickett, Cozart bring contrasting styles to matchup
FILE PHOTO
West Virginia quarterback Clint Trickett takes a snap from under center during the 2013 season.
By Ryan Petrovich Sports Writer @DailyAthenaeum
West Virginia has seen exceptional improvement from quarterback Clint Trickett this season. Coaches and players continue to say his play is “night and day” compared to last season. Trickett has emerged as a top quarterback in the Big 12. Through four weeks of action, Trickett has thrown for 1600 yards, nine touchdowns and has only three interceptions. While a lot of credit goes
to his main targets – Kevin White and Mario Alford – Trickett is still averaging 400 yards per game. This week, Kansas will conduct battle with the Mountaineers in Morgantown. The Jayhawks will bring in a quarterback whose style of play is a bit different than that of Trickett. Kansas’ quarterback, Montell Cozart, brings a mobile factor to the table. His ability to escape pressure and use his feet as a weapon has made him a dangerous player. Not only can Cozart run
with the ball, he can throw. Escaping the rush and extending the play is something Cozart does very well. This has allowed Kansas to come up with big-time gains and splash-play scores. “He keeps plays alive with his feet and he gets outside the pocket and he can hurt you,” said defensive coordinator Tony Gibson. “He can throw the ball, especially when he rolls to his right. He’s dangerous when he gets on the perimeter.” Trickett isn’t a mobiletype quarterback. Aside from an occasional scram-
ble, Trickett’s a pocket passer, and he said he doesn’t see that changing. “We’re just going to keep doing what we’ve been doing,” Trickett said. “Just going to have to take shots (downfield). Completion percentage may not be high, but you’re going to have big plays if you can make them.” Head coach Dana Holgorsen emphasized how tough the Kansas defense is. “Kansas is a team that plays hard,” Holgorsen said. “It starts with their defense. That’s why Clint Bowen is their interim coach at this
time. We got our work cut out for us.” He said he recognized Kansas’ man coverage will propose a challenge, and attacking them down the field is a primary option to beating the Jayhawks’ defense. “They don’t really allow you to make easy throws or anything,” Trickett said. West Virginia is coming off a loss to Oklahoma and a bye week. The extra time has allowed Trickett and company to heal physically and mentally before their meeting with the Jayhawks. “Everybody’s bodies are,
I think, 100 percent,” Trickett said. “Mentally, we knew those first four (games) where going to be tough, but we’re past that now and we’re in the heart of the Big 12 and that’s what we’re focused on.” It’ll be an interesting matchup between two different types of quarterbacks Saturday. A pocket passer in Trickett, who is putting up big-time numbers, will be pitted against a mobile quarterback in Cozart, with the ability to generate splash plays. dasports@mail.wvu.edu

O-line looking to find consistency in second half
Offensive lineman celebrate with running back Rushel Shell, No. 7, after scoring a touchdown against Towson earlier this season.
By Anthony Pecoraro Associate Sports EDITOR @PecoraroWVUNews
With eight games remaining for West Virginia in the 2014 regular season, the offensive line has surprised many with its performances and ability to protect redshirt senior quarterback Clint Trickett. Redshirt sophomore offensive lineman Tyler Orlosky said he’s confident in the line’s ability to be efficient as the season progresses, even though WVU’s last outing against No.
4 Oklahoma, which resulted in a 45-33 loss for the Mountaineers, was filled with issues for the offensive line. “Some miscommunication, I think, led to some big plays for their defense, which led to momentum and points for them,” Orlosky said. “I think we have to minimize those, and I think we’ll be alright.” Offensive line coach Ron Crook said as good as WVU was at executing its game plan, it wasn’t enough. He understands the changes that need to be made when taking on
the Kansas Jayhawks. “The good is we competed. We played hard. We stuck with our plan and believed in what we were doing, and the bad is we didn’t get it done,” he said. “In both of the games we lost so far year, we had opportunities to go out and put ourselves in position to win (and) we have to take advantage of those.” Crook said even with the challenges his line has yet to overcome, there have been some huge momentumbuilders with each game thus far.
“The biggest thing we’ve done, especially with the offensive line, is we’ve gone out and they’ve done a good job preparing each week,” he said. “They go into each game and they’re prepared to go play hard, prepared to go play physical and they’ve done that.” Orlosky said he viewed the biggest problem for WVU’s offensive line to be once the second half rolls around. That’s when opposing defenses have brought the Mountaineers down. “In the first half, we’ve
Andrew Spellman/The Daily Athenaeum
started out fast in all of our games, but I think the biggest thing I see from the defense in the second half is they’ve decided to move around more, try to confuse us more, and I think we’ve had some trouble with that, and just (have) to keep on working on that,” he said. Though Kansas may not be anywhere near comparable to Oklahoma, Crook said the Jayhawk defense is nothing to joke about. “They have good players and their scheme makes it difficult to run the football,”
he said. “They’re going to outnumber you, so we are going to have to go out and play hard and play well to have success.” Following the Oklahoma loss, Orlosky said seeing West Virginia’s 2-2 record is misleading and is not the best representation of what this team is actually made of. “I don’t think 2-2 is a great way to describe how this team is. I think we’re a lot better than that, (and) the team is different than a 2-2 record,” he said. anthony.pecoraro@mail.wvu.edu

Defense tasked with containing another mobile QB
Nick Jarvis/The Daily Athenaeum
Edward Muldrow, No. 20, and Brandon Golson, No. 2, try to chase down Oklahoma quarterback Trevor Knight during Week 4.
By Dillon Durst Sports Writer @DailyAthenaeum
Heading into Saturday’s Big 12 matchup against Kansas, West Virginia’s defensive line faces the challenge of containing yet another mobile quarterback. Head coach Dana Holgorsen and defensive coordinator Tony Gibson both agreed that containing sophomore quarterback Montell Cozart will be important. “The biggest thing that
(Cozart) does well is keep the play alive,” Holgorsen said. “He’ll do some run game stuff, but in the pass game, he does a great job of keeping things alive.” “He is very good on his feet and can get out of trouble,” Gibson said. “He has a good arm. He probably throws it better on the run than he does sitting in the pocket … He is a very athletic kid, and we have to make sure we do a good job of containing him.” Establishing a consistent pass rush figures to be criti-
cal against an elusive quarterback. The Mountaineers’ defensive line needs to bring Cozart to the ground when they get hands on him or get their hands up on pass plays to create potential turnovers. “With Cozart, once you get there, the play is not over. You’ve got to do a great job of getting him on the ground,” Holgorsen said. After doing a good job of containing Oklahoma quarterback Trevor Knight, West Virginia’s three-man front shouldn’t have too much
trouble containing Cozart. Although the Jayhawks’ offensive line is comprised of mainly upperclassmen, the unit has been struggling against opponents’ pass rush this season. West Virginia’s pass rush hasn’t been as effective this season as Holgorsen would like it to be, but he said it was worked on during the bye week. “We haven’t sacked the quarterback as much as I would have liked to sack the quarterback,” he said. “We
worked hard on that over the last week as far as getting guys into position to get to the quarterback.” The Mountaineers’ defensive line will also be facing two talented backs in De’Andre Mann and Corey Avery. Through four games, Avery has racked up 252 yards on 54 carries. Whether or not the defensive line can stop Kansas’ rushing attack with three guys will determine how many more players Gibson has to bring into the box to
stuff the run. Junior nose tackle Kyle Rose is a space eater in the middle of the Mountaineers’ three-man front and figures to be the anchor in both stuffing the run game and keeping a close eye on Cozart. If the defensive line can get a consistent pass rush on Cozart and stop - or even slow down - Kansas’ rushing attack, it will go a long way in helping the linebackers and defensive backs downfield. dasports@mail.wvu.edu

Shell, running backs looking for explosive plays By Anthony Pecoraro Associate Sports Editor @PecoraroWVUNews
Following West Virginia’s bye week, it’s back to the game week preparations during Week 6, as the Kansas Jayhawks are set to enter Morgantown Saturday. Over the course of the Mountaineers’ first four games this season, the WVU running game has been consistent for the most part. However, when making the biggest plays in the most critical situations has been put to the test for this fiveman deep running squad, the results have lacked.
Knowing consistency and production out of all the Mountaineer running backs is a necessity to be successful the rest of the season, running backs coach JaJuan Seider said he viewed West Virginia’s latest game against No. 4 Oklahoma as WVU’s best running game thus far and is looking to build upon that. “Last week was our best, most complete game as a group in the running back room, so at the end of the day, I’m very pleased where we are running the ball,” Seider said. “In the Oklahoma game, we averaged 4.5 (yards) a
carry. That’s good numbers for us, and we have to be patient and, eventually, the big plays are going to come. Hopefully, if we’re blocking up front, we’ll create some opportunities.” As for offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson, he said a top priority week in and week out for this running squad is finding that niche to keep defenses from not knowing what is coming next from the array of WVU backs. “Everybody is typically doing a lot of the same thing defensively, as far as stacking the box and playing man,” he said.
Banks, secondary must shut down Kansas’ talented skill players By Ryan Petrovich Sports Writer @DailyAthenaeum
An issue the West Virginia University Mountaineers have been dealing with in recent seasons is their inability to minimize big-time gains through the air or on the ground. While the defense has been much improved and the splash plays have been somewhat tamed this season, Kansas will pose a threat when it comes to big-time gains for touchdowns. Four of Kansas’ touchdowns this season have come on plays of more than 30 yards. One player in particular, Jayhawks’ wide receiver Tony Pierson, is turning heads with his ability to take the ball for long gains. “ They’ve got some home run hitters,” said cornerbacks coach Brian Mitchell. “I think their wide receivers are very capable. I’m not saying their numbers aren’t where
they need to be, but I’m saying those guys are very good as a core. They’re going to be a challenge. They are big and fast, and they catch the ball in space.” Pierson took a running play up the sidelines for a 74-yard touchdown against Central Michigan and has a 67-yard receiving touchdown on the season. “What they’re trying to do is get the ball to their best players. (Pierson) took that stretch – that’s what we call it – up the sidelines and has the ability to take it the distance,” Mitchell said. “We don’t want to get hit with big plays like that,” said defensive coordinator Tony Gibson. “Our goal coming in from day one was for our kids to be able to play fast, and I think we’re honing in on what we do well and we’re going to get better with that.” Pierson isn’t the only threat. As a group, the Jayhawks have a solid unit.
While corner Daryl Worley remains suspended, the Mountaineers will continue to lean on Ishmael Banks. Banks said he recognizes just how good Kansas’ receivers are. “They’ve got a lot of big guys. They put their hands on you, they aren’t going to let you go. You got to be physical with them,” Banks said. “They’ve got some guys that run good routes. They’ve got some athletic guys. We’ve just got to be sound and play our game.” After reviewing film from last year’s loss to Kansas, coach Mitchell said he was impressed with what the Mountaineers were able to do. “With the adjustment we made on the outside – not having Daryl (Worley) – I thought our kids performed very well,” he said. “I know we gave up the one deep ball, but that was a mental lapse. I was pleased with what we did.” dasports@mail.wvu.edu
“Being physical is something we have to continue to do every week. We want to run the ball. We want to run the ball better, so obviously there is going to be an emphasis on that.” However, Seider said he knows Kansas’ defense brings about a litany of challenges that the backs will have to overcome. “They’re very similar to how Oklahoma plays their front,” he said. “Same schematic schemes, try to outnumber you in the box to force you to try to take shots. They do a good job pressing on the outside, and we have to be patient
with the run.” Dawson said although the backs have been getting three and four yard gains on many drives this season, it’s the big plays that need to come into play Saturday against the Jayhawks. “We want to have some more explosive plays in our running game, but it’s hard when that many players are in the box,” he said. “For running backs, it’s obviously important car- THE DAILY ATHENAEUM rying the ball, but some of the things they do without Follow us on Twitter for all the breaking news updates and news feeds. the ball in their hands is extremely important, as well.” anthony.pecoraro@mail.wvu.edu

White, Alford look to feast on man-to-man coverage

Wide receiver Kevin White looks the ball into his hands in Week 4.

West Virginia head coach Dana Holgorsen said Tuesday that the Mountaineers need to take advantage of one-on-one and man-toman situations Saturday against Kansas. In last year’s ugly 31-19 loss to the Jayhawks in Lawrence, Kan., the Mountaineers were unable to move the ball once Kansas began playing man coverage and loading the box against the run. Although Holgorsen said
the Mountaineers didn’t take advantage of man-toman situations in last year’s meeting, he said he thinks the team is more capable of winning those matchups in 2014. Receiver Kevin White, who leads West Virginia with 42 receptions for 633 yards and three touchdowns, figures to get plenty of oneon-one opportunities Saturday against the Big 12’s No. 7 passing defense. “I just have to use my body and be more physical,” White said. “I need to continue to play how I have been
playing.” Offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson said Kansas’ style of defense forces offenses into one-on-one situations that West Virginia must be able to take advantage of. “We have to create those matchups and take advantage of them when we have them,” Dawson said. “Hopefully we take advantage of them this year, because I know we didn’t last year.” Wide receivers coach Lonnie Galloway said he doesn’t predict the Jayhawks will do anything different Saturday,
and he noted that, through four games this season, no team has really thrown the ball downfield against them. “I think we’re better outside. I think we’re better at quarterback. Defensively, I think they’ll come in here and do the same thing: load the box up and play cover one. That’s what they do,” Galloway said. After a bye week, timing between the quarterback and receivers can occasionally be thrown off. Holgorsen said the timing between quarterback Clint Trickett and the receivers hasn’t
skipped a beat. “I was a little worried about it coming back after a couple days off, so we had a more extensive practice on Sunday … We did some one-on-one stuff and some seven-on-seven stuff and felt like we had our best period of the year,” Holgorsen said. “I was happy and excited. I thought Clint (Trickett) was throwing the ball well.” White said the biggest difference between his and Trickett’s on-field relationship this year compared to last year is the consistency. “I put in a lot more work
this season so far, and I am going to continue to do that,” he said. West Virginia hobbled into last year’s meeting after a loss to Texas and got embarrassed. This time around, the Mountaineers will be ready to play in front of their home crowd. “We went in there and didn’t know what we were doing,” White said about last year’s meeting. “They embarrassed us on the field. This week, we just want to prepare and get the win.” dasports@mail.wvu.edu
