Basket fund nears $17,000 The spirit of giving continues into the new year in the Alcorn County area. Donations continue to arrive for the 20th Annual Corinth Rotary Club/Daily Corinthian Christmas Basket Fund. A $25,000 fundraising goal was set so 1,000 food baskets could be given to local families on Saturday, Dec. 5. Baskets were given away based upon faith the goal will be reached. The deadline to receive donations has been extended until Friday. So far $16,786 has been raised, meaning $8,214 still has to be raised to meet the goal. Recent donations include $50 from Helen Carroll in memory of Brad Bingham; $250 from Bell Liquefied Gas Co., Inc. in honor of Dr. T.L. Sweat; $50 from Al and Gail Stables in honor of the Challenger Sunday School Class at First United Methodist Church; $100 from Frank and Katie Dalton; and $91 from Holly Baptist Church Sunday School classes. Contributions to the Christmas Basket Fund can be made “in honor of” or “in memory of” a special person or persons. The tribute will be published daily in the Daily Corinthian. Mississippi is loaded with places to see and things to do. The Mississippi Development Authority Tourism Division and the Mississippi Tourism Association has

One victim of a Christmas Eve plane crash near the CorinthAlcorn County Airport remains in critical condition. Lauren Chase, daughter-inlaw of pilot Dr. David Chase, was listed in critical condition at the Regional Medical Center (The Med) in Memphis, Tennessee, on Monday, according to hospital spokeswoman Angie Golding. Lauren Chase was airlifted to The Med from Magnolia Regional Health Center, where she was transported by ambulance following the crash of the single-engine turboprop plane. The plane crashed shortly after takeoff on the morning of Christmas Eve. Dr. Chase and other family members aboard escaped serious injury in the crash. The pilot told emergency responders he noticed a flap was stuck on one of the wings of the aircraft and was attempting to return to the airport when the plane crashed. He managed to avoid several power lines and passed through two dead pine trees before landing just feet from a nearby vacant home.

The first day of a new administration brought a new chief deputy and other shifting of positions at the Alcorn County Sheriff’s Department. Sheriff Ben Caldwell presented staffing requests to the Board of Supervisors for approval in Monday morning’s opening of the new term. Supervisors approved the hiring of Dusty Essary as chief deputy. David Derrick, who had served as chief deputy for the previous sheriff, is out as of Dec. 31. Other changes approved by

Caldwell While he had already taken over management of the jail and prison, Caldwell had only had about an hour with the sheriff’s department before the meeting of the supervisors.
“I’m really excited about the team we’ve got,” he said. “The county is fortunate to have some good men and women working there. I’m excited to move forward.” The new sheriff is already dealing with some mechanical issues at the justice center, where some heating units are failing. He presented bids for repairs to the HVAC system in the 911 office, and supervisors approved the fix at a cost of $5,910. Work will also be done on HVAC in the jail at a cost of $4,918.32, which did not require a competing bid.
