Grant covers salaries of 2 officers BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
The Corinth Police Department has won another grant to provide increased policing on the streets of South Corinth. The Board of Aldermen on Tuesday approved the acceptance of approximately $131,000 for a second year of the Corinth Hot-
Spot Policing Project, which will cover the salaries of two officers and the purchase of a new patrol vehicle with no contribution required from the city. The department planned to order another Chevrolet Tahoe immediately. According to Police Chief Ralph Dance, the first year of the program has been good for the high-
crime area. “The two officers responsible for staying in that area spend a lot of time at the Boys and Girls Club, and they spend a lot of time at the different civic organizations in the area,” he said. “We’re trying to make connections with the

It’s only a couple of months until the next opportunity for Alcorn County residents to cast votes for public officials. The March 8 presidential primary is first up on the elections calendar for 2016. While it is a light year for local races, the November general elections in presidential years consistently pull the biggest turnouts. Local races coming up this year are two seats on the county school board — districts 1 and 2. District 2 is currently vacant with the recent resignation of James Voyles, who won election to the Board of Supervisors, while Russ Nash holds the District 1 seat. Qualifying for the two posts will run from Aug. 10 to Sept. 9. An appointee is expected to complete Voyles’ unexpired term. The five county election commissioner posts are also up for election this year. Qualifying for election commissioner opened this week and runs through June 6. The party primary elections for U.S. House of Representatives will also appear on the March 8 ballot alongside the
presidential primary. Voter participation is typically light in those primaries. “I hear a lot of people say, ‘It’s not going to matter,’” said Circuit Clerk Joe Caldwell. But some pundits predict an extended battle for the Republican nomination for president this year. Mississippi votes a week after Super Tuesday, when voters in a dozen states cast ballots. Others voting on the same day as Mississippi are Michigan, Idaho and Hawaii. Candidates to appear on the ballot in Mississippi on the Democratic ticket are Hillary Clinton, Martin O’Malley and Bernie Sanders. On the Republican ticket, candidates are Jeb Bush, Ben Carson, Chris Christie, Ted Cruz, Carly Fiorina, Lindsey Graham, Mike Huckabee, John R. Kasich, George Pataki, Rand Paul, Marco Rubio, Rick Santorum and Donald J. Trump. Locally, Caldwell said most of the buzz he is hearing is about Trump. “We had people that wanted to vote for Trump in this last November election,” he said. The Nov. 8 general election ballot will also include seats on the Mississippi Supreme Court and Court of Appeals.
Corinth-Alcorn shelter in need of dog food BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com
The Corinth-Alcorn Animal Shelter is bursting at the seams with man’s best friend. Volunteer Director Charlotte Doehner said the facility is searching for homes for more than 175 dogs now being housed at the shelter. “Adoptions would be wonderful, but we also really need donations right now,” said Doehner. “With so many dogs in our kennels, it really takes a lot of food to care for them. For anyone wishing to help, we are
desperately low on dog food.” Doehner said with manufacturers being closed or on limited production around the holidays, the shelter hasn’t seen many large donations like normal. “We were fortunate to be able to send three pups to a foster home in Virginia last week,” she said. “It’s always nice to be able to send some of our dogs to foster homes because we know it will soon lead to their fur-ever home.” Dog food is just a start on a long wish list of things the shel-
ter needs. “We are in the process of trying to acquire small pet waterers,” added Doehner. “These help keep fresh water for the puppies while preventing them from knocking over water bowls.” Other needed items include newspapers, puppy food, cat food, kitten food, treats, cat and dog toys, old towels and washcloths, old bedsheets, old blankets, dog houses, pet beds, Dawn dish washing liquid (blue), bleach, cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, heavy
duty tarps, cotton balls, cat litter, litter boxes, litter scoops, collars, pet shampoo, crates and carriers, hand sanitizer, garbage bags, mops, brooms, sponges, food bowls, rubber and latex gloves and spray bottles. “We can also use cash donations for the growing vet bills and daily operation needs and gas cards to help with transport of animals to rescues or to the vets,” added Doehner.
