Trump sworn in as 45th president BY JULIE PACE AP White House Correspondent
WASHINGTON — Pledging to empower America’s “forgotten men and women,” Donald Trump was sworn in as the 45th president of the United States Friday, taking command of a deeply divided nation and ushering in an unpredictable era in Washington. His victory
gives Republicans control of the White House for the first time in eight years. Looking out over the crowd sprawled across the National Mall, Trump painted a bleak picture of the nation he now leads, lamenting “American carnage,” shuttered factories and depleted U.S. leadership. President Barack Obama, the
man he replaced, sat behind him stoically. Trump’s address lasted just 16 minutes. While his inauguration did draw crowds to the nation’s capital, the numbers appeared smaller than for past celebrations. Demonstrations unfolded at various security checkpoints near the Capitol as po-
lice helped ticket-holders get through. After the swearing-in, more protesters registered their rage in the streets of Washington. Police in riot gear deployed pepper spray and made numerous arrests after protesters smashed the windows of downtown businesses, denouncing Please see TRUMP | 2

A Oxford senator introduced a bill to the Mississippi Legislature this week that would merge North and South Tippah School Districts. Sen. Gray Tollison (R-Lafayette, Panola) filed Senate Bill 2462 which states the North Tippah School District and the South Tippah School District shall be consolidated into one school district to be designated as the Tippah County School District effective July 1, 2019. Sen. Rita Potts Parks (RAlcorn, Tishomingo, Tippah) said she was “shocked” when she first saw Tollison’s proposed legislation. “In the past few years, school districts with small enrollments have been targeted for consolidation. I have expressed my deepest concerns about this to leadership in several conversations,” said Parks. “I believe decisions such as this belong at the lo-
cal level, and I will fight to keep any decisions in Tippah County, not in Jackson.” Parks said a vote that would consolidate the districts would take a long process. “While a bill has been filed in the Senate, it still has to pass the full Education Committee and then a floor vote of the Senate, then pass through the Education Committee again and pass floor of the House, as well,” she said. North Tippah School District includes Chalybeate Elementary School, Falkner elementary and high schools and Walnut elementary and high schools. South Tippah School District includes Ripley elementary, middle and high schools, Blue Mountain School K-12, Pine Grove School K-12 and the Tippah County Career & Technology Center.
