BY JEBB JOHNSTON With just a few days left for timely payment of property taxes, a line of customers stretched out the door of the Alcorn County Tax Collector’s Office Friday afternoon. Wednesday is the last day to pay before a penalty starts to be added to the tax bill. “Seventy-five percent of the taxes will probably be in by Feb. 1,” said Tax Collector Larry Ross. “We won’t have an awful lot to collect between

Some lawmakers are calling EdBuild proposal scenario numbers released by The Associated Press earlier this week as “fake news.” The AP published a look at how school districts across the state might fare in a breakdown of the proposal set to replace the current 20-year-old Mississippi Adequate Education Program funding formula. The numbers showed statewide funding would increase by $195 million, but District 1 Rep. Lester “Bubba” Carpenter (R-Alcorn, Tishomingo) said “it’s just propaganda at this point.” “The EdBuild proposal is only meant to give legislatures

February and the tax sale in August.” Through the close of business on Thursday, ad valorem tax payments made by county residents totaled $9,406,891.90. On the same date a year earlier, the total was $7,912,781.28, and the increase of almost 19 percent can be attributed to this year’s increase in the millage rate. recommendations on changes that could be made to the current public education formula,” said Carpenter. “I feel like there’s a lot of changes yet to be made to the current proposal. There’s not even a bill yet ... anything reported this early is misinformation.” District 2 Rep. Nick Bain (DAlcorn) agreed. “John Moore, the House Education Committee chair, said himself that the formula proposed and the formula that we’ll vote on will be completely different,” said Bain. “So what’s currently being proposed isn’t the truth.” Bain added, “there will be changes ... good or bad, I don’t Please see EDBUILD | 2A
Katie Briggs, Michie, Tenn. Learning the talent from her mother, Katie Briggs first picked up a paint brush when she was a youngster. “I’ve been painting for as long as I can remember,” said the 36-year-old full-time artist. “I do it everyday. I absolutely love seeing people’s faces light up when they see the finished product for the first time.” Although she doesn’t have her own storefront, her artwork can be found at several small businesses across the Crossroads including Seasons in the Sun. “Door-hangers are one of my favorite items to paint,” she said. “I have several designs for every season for folks to choose from.” Married to Ryan for 18 years, the two have three children, 17-year-old Shiloh, 10-year-old Shelby and 8-year-old Stella.

“If the governor isn’t a fan of the arts, then it could hurt,” said Rep. Nick Bain (D-Alcorn). Both Bain and Rep. Lester “Bubba” Carpenter (R-Alcorn, Tishomingo) are against a bill introduced in the state capitol this week that would dissolve the Mississippi Arts Commission and hand its power over to the governor. If passed, the bill would shut down the current MAC board of directors and give its duties to Gov. Phil Bryant and the governor lead Mississippi Development Authority who
