Area residents are being called upon again to unite in the fight against cancer. This year’s Relay For Life event is scheduled for Friday, April 28, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Crossroads Regional Park (city park) in Corinth. Alcorn County Relay for Life event chair Lanell Coln said the Alcorn County event is in desperate need of teams. She said people do not participate the way they used to and she feels it is because of busy lives. “Everybody is so busy, and it’s difficult, but this is so important and it can be really fun. You make great friendships from just doing it,” said Coln. “I would really like to see it grow and be back to the participation it had so many years ago.” Coln said this year’s theme for the the event is “Superheroes” and she wanted to stress the point that it does not have to be only businesses that participate and form a team. “I would like to see more churches to get involved. It can also be families and friends. You can get together and have a team in honor of a family mem-

Public Works Director Clayton Mills said the project will include the reworking of six storm drain inlets. Other items recently before the city board: • Aldermen approved soliciting bids for one automated garbage truck. It could reduce the staffing from three men per truck to one. • Fire Chief Todd Welch

reported on the department’s run totals for 2016. With 2,060 total calls during the year, 1,439 of those were medical calls; 295 were public assistance calls; 183 were false alarms; and 143 were calls for fires or hazardous materials. The department is equipping the air truck to respond to medical calls to reduce fuel and maintenance on the pumper trucks, said Welch. • Director of Community Development and Planning Dave Huwe reported that the Mississippi Department of Transportation recently completed adjustments to the control box for signalization at the intersection of Highway 72 and South Harper Road. The control box had received a short-term fix after a prior accident.

The Alcorn School District Board of Education approved a two-part resolution Monday night deeding the Glen school property to the Town of Glen. Arch Bullard, attorney for the school board, put forth two resolutions for the board’s consideration that needed approval to transfer the property. The attorney explained that the Glen school property was deeded in two different parcels. The first resolution had several points including that the school board finds the property is no longer needed to operate as a school, is useful to the Glen community, and would authorize the board president and secretary to execute the necessary documents to deed the property to the Town of Glen. Bullard noted that the first resolution also states that if the property ceases to be used as a community center or used for economic development, the deed can revert to the district. It also states the Town of

“I’m not sure what they [Glen] plan to do with the property. There has been some discussion of using it as a community center, or develop it into a rehabilitation center, but I think they are anxious to get the property.” Arch Bullard Alcorn School District attorney Glen is to keep the property in good repair, insure the property, and it cannot be used as a school by the Town of Glen.
