Corinth and William McMullin are a match made in the card catalog.

It was his fascination with that now archaic system of library organization that led the current director of the Northeast Regional Library to library work and to a long career in the city. Forty-two years later, he is reflecting on a lifetime in the field as retirement looms on April 30.

“I have always considered each library to be a civic center of the community,” said McMullin. “We are a neutral place where people can meet, read, enjoy an event, use our meeting rooms, get on a computer, and generally find an oasis of

Motorists can expect some traffic interruptions this week as work continues at the Five Points intersection east of Corinth.

Beginning Monday and continuing for several days, the utility relocation work will require the closing of the west leg of the intersection on Kendrick Road. Alcorn County and Cook Coggin Engineers recommend motorists plan to take an alternate route.

“Other segments of the intersection will be affected later as the work progresses,” said Johnny Crotts of Cook Coggin.

Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, which authorized the creation of U.S. military areas “from which any or all persons may be excluded”; the order was used mostly to relocate and intern people of Japanese ancestry, including American-born citizens, although fewer numbers of people of German and Italian backgrounds were also singled out. Imperial Japanese warplanes raided the Australian city of Darwin; at least 243 people were killed.

Across the Region Selmer Youth substance abuse trends are declining Selmer, Tenn. — The Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (TDMHSAS) is proud to announce that youth substance use trends are declining in Tennessee, according to a new report from the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration.

“It is very encouraging to see that in all substance use areas our young people are using substances less; this means prevention efforts are working,” said Marie Williams, TDMHSAS Commissioner.

“Youth substance use can take a tremendous toll on individuals, families, and communities. Most Tennesseans know someone’s family who

has been impacted by the unfortunate reality of adolescent substance use. For those that have struggled with, been impacted by youth substance use, or been part of the prevention efforts, these new indicators give us hope.”

Substance use declined among Tennessee youth from 2004-2006 to 2012-2014: Illicit drug use dropped from 6% to 3% Alcohol use declined from 14% to 10% Misuse of pain relievers dropped from 9% to 5% Cigarette use declined from 13% to 7% Tennessee’s youth substance use trends have been decreasing at a faster rate than the national average. Tennessee youth illicit drug use has declined and is now at or below the national average. Fewer Tennessee youth (6%) used

marijuana in the past month than compared to the United States youth (7%). The full report outlines many positive trends in Tennessee related to youth substance use.

“The Department places an emphasis on education, prevention, treatment and early intervention efforts directed specifically at Tennessee youth,” said Rodney Bragg, TDMHSAS Assistant Commissioner of Substance Abuse Services.

“The earlier we can identify and engage youth that are more susceptible to substance use, the more effective our efforts will be.”

“The fact that these key substance use indicators are declining among our youth in Tennessee provides great hope for the future of our State,” said Commissioner Williams.

Our hope is that the culture is changing in Tennessee and

that we will also see a decrease in adult substance use trends in the future as well.

Booneville Corinth man arrested after fleeing from police BOONEVILLE — A Corinth man faces a felony charge after fleeing from Booneville police.

John Casey Crow, 32, of 1215 Hwy. 2, Corinth, was arrested on a charge of one count felony fleeing and several misdemeanor charges. His bond was set at $5,000.

“Officers had stopped him on a traffic stop Jan. 29 on East Chambers Drive when Crow fled from officers in his vehicle. He had actually gotten away until Tuesday where he was arrested in McNairy County on a warrant for those charges,” said Police Chief Michael Ramey.

On this date: In 1915, during World War I, British and French warships launched their initial attack on Ottoman forces in the Dardanelles, a strait in northwestern Turkey. (The Gallipoli Campaign that followed proved disastrous for the Allies.)

In 1917, Carson McCullers, author of “The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter” and “The Member of the Wedding,” was born Lula Carson Smith in Columbus, Georgia.

In 1934, a blizzard began inundating the northeastern United States, with the heaviest snowfall occurring in Connecticut and Massachusetts.

In 1945, Operation Detachment began during World War II as some 30,000 U.S. Marines began landing on Iwo Jima, where they began a successful month-long battle to seize control of the island from Japanese forces.

Local Relay for Life in need of ‘Superheros’ Almost every family has been affected by cancer in some way.

Death or recoveries — there are many stories to share.

Stories of triumphs or tragedies remain the core of what families go through when dealing with cancer.

Area residents are being called upon again to unite in the fight against cancer.

It is our hope many people will heed the call.

This year’s Alcorn County Relay For Life event is scheduled for Friday, April 28, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Crossroads Regional Park in Corinth.

All proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society in its research to find a cure for cancer.

Local Relay for Life event chair Lanell Coln recently told the Daily Corinthian the Alcorn County event is in desperate need of teams.

She said people do not participate the way they used to and she feels it is because of their busy lives.

She’s probably right. We live in a fastpaced world.

“Everybody is so busy, and it’s difficult, but this is so important and it can be really fun.

You make great friendships from just doing it,” said Coln. “I would really like to see it grow and be back to the participation it had so many years ago.”

This year’s theme for Relay for Life is “Superheroes.”

Many businesses take part, but the event chair encourages churches, families and friends to take part.

“I would like to see more churches get involved. It can also be families and friends.

You can get together and have a team in honor of a family member,” Coln suggested.

Good idea.

Coln’s “Lanelle’s Warriors” relay team is a cancer support group and some are just friends.

Maybe people should consider this idea if their place of business isn’t taking part.

“We still don’t have a cure, but we’ve come a long way ... I’m living proof of that,” said Coln.

Coln herself is a survivor of pancreatic cancer.

With such a powerful story of her own, Coln stresses the importance of supporting the Relay for Life and continuing to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

We couldn’t agree more.

Some walls do work “You must always leave the wall” -- “The Fantasticks” While the debate continues about when, how quickly and who will pay for a “wall” across America’s Southern border, at least one country known for its liberal politics is offering a lesson.

The “City of Light,” Paris, France, has decided to spend 20 million euros ($22 million USD) to build a wall around the Eiffel Tower. Why? To limit the risk of terrorism.

Bloomberg.com reports that a city official, JeanFrancois Martins, said the idea is to have a “permanent and aesthetic barrier” around the city’s most famous landmark. “Sadly,” he said, “the risk of terrorism hasn’t gone away.”

When President Trump offers a similar rationale for building a wall between the United States and Mexico he is denounced by the left as a racist.

India and Pakistan have been hostile neighbors for decades, fighting wars in 1947, 1965, 1971 and 1999.

About this, Rubin writes: “Because Pakistani terror groups regularly try to infiltrate and wreak havoc in India, India constructed a border fence and wall system to keep Pakistanis out.”

Following skirmishes throughout the 1990s between Turkey and Syria, the Turkish government

reinforced the border with “fences, mine fields, and no man’s land, and it worked,” writes Rubin. “The next fifteen years was largely quiet.

It was only when Turkey’s leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan removed many of the defenses and turned a blind eye to border security that the terrorism problem in Syria -- and its subsequent blowback inside Turkey itself -- grew so great.”

Rubin writes of other walls, including one between Saudi Arabia and Yemen and those built by Greece, Hungary and Spain.

True, some walls throughout history have been less effective, but these latest ones are working. They are modern examples employing modern technology and better models than ancient ones from which we can learn and emulate.

Vladimir Putin swiftly declared that there would be no reciprocal expulsions and U.S. diplomats and their families would be welcome at the Kremlin’s Christmas and New Year’s parties.

Diplomatic crisis averted.

But apparently, this did not sit well with the deep state.

For when Vice President Pence told a TV show that Flynn told him that sanctions Patrick did not come Buchanan up in conversation with Columnist the Russian ambassador, a transcript of Flynn’s call was produced from recordings by intelligence agencies, and its contents leaked to The Washington Post.

After seeing the transcript, the White House concluded that Flynn had misled Pence, mutual trust was gone, and Flynn must go.

Like a good soldier, Flynn took the bullet.

But the deep state is after larger game than General Flynn. It is out to bring down President Trump and abort any move to effect the sort of rapprochement with Russia that Ronald Reagan achieved.

For the deep state is deeply committed to Cold War II. Hence, suddenly, we read reports of a Russian spy ship off the Connecticut, Delaware and Virginia coasts, of Russian jets buzzing a U.S. warship in the Black Sea and Russian violations of Reagan’s INF treaty outlawing intermediate-range missiles in Europe.

Purpose: Stampede the

White House into abandoning any idea of a detente with Russia. And it appears to be working. At a White House briefing Tuesday, Sean Spicer said, “President Trump has made it very clear that he expects the Russian government to ... return Crimea.”

Is the White House serious?

Putin could no more survive returning Crimea to Ukraine than Bibi Netanyahu could survive giving East Jerusalem back to Jordan.

For violating their oaths and breaking the law, bureaucratic saboteurs are hailed as “whistleblowers” while the journalists who receive the fruits of their felonies put in for Pulitzers.

Now if Russians hacked into the DNC and John Podesta’s computer during the campaign, and, more seriously, if Trump aides colluded in any such scheme, it should be investigated.

An independent counsel should be appointed by the attorney general and a grand jury impaneled to investigate what Trump himself rightly calls “criminal” misconduct in the security agencies.

As for interfering in elections, how clean are our hands?

and Italy after World War II to defeat the Communists who had been part of the wartime resistance to the Nazis and Fascists.

And we succeeded. But we continued these practices after the Cold War ended. In this century, our National Endowment for Democracy, which dates to the Reagan era, has backed “color revolutions” and “regime change” in nations across what Russia regards as her “near abroad.”

NED’s continued existence appears a contradiction of Trump’s inaugural declaration: “We do not seek to impose our way of life on anyone.”

The president and GOP should get out front here.

Let Congress investigate Russia meddling in our election. And let a special prosecutor run down, root out, expose and indict those in the investigative and intel agencies who used their custody of America’s secrets, in collusion with press collaborators, to take down Trump appointees who are on their enemies lists.

Then put NED down.

What in the world is AIME? During our seminars, we try to explain AIME to our attendees.

It is quite complicated, so very hard to explain in few short minutes. AIME stands for Averaged Indexed Monthly Earnings. So that the Social Security Administration can determine your PIA (Primary Insurance Amount), 35 top years of earnings are needed to compute the AIME. Your Primary Insurance Amount is what is reported on your SS statement as the amount you will receive at a designated age. SS chooses those years with the highest earnings, sums the indexed earning amounts, applies an indexing factor, and then divides this amount by the total number of months in those years, being 420.

Your past earnings are indexed by adjusting them for subsequent economic growth, to put them in terms of today’s dollars. This is done by multiplying your past earnings by an index, that reflects changes in the national earnings for every year since you earned wages until you turn age 60. Included in this compensation are

wages, tips and other compensation subject to federal income taxes and reported on your W-2.

So, in thinking this through, you might be thinking what happens to the totals after age 60? These years are not indexed so they are counted at their actual value. How does that affect me? My top 35 years of earnings has some zeros included – this was because I chose to stay home with my kids during their younger years. My

decision – no regrets, but these zeros are included in my total. So, for each year I work past age 60, if my income is more than zero, that will replace one of the numbers used to compute my AIME and my amount should increase. This could be a BIG DEAL for many of you.

blues,” said Rushing, a singer in the band Rust Bucket Roadies, who performs rockabilly, blues and “Miss.-Americana” music. “Music with roots in Mississippi,” he said.

Rushing is a Mooreville resident, but has family history both in Alcorn and McNairy counties.

He grew up in those two counties and still has family there.

Rushing is one of the men behind the idea along with Rep. Randy Boyd of Mantachie.

He said the highway is important to the state’s history.

“We need to embrace our past,” said Rushing.

“This part of the world was responsible for many changes - not just music but culture itself.”

Several events happened all along the road where people would perform, Rushing said.

“They would stop in Corinth, Booneville and Tupelo. There was a radio program, called ‘Wildcat Jamboree’, that had Rockabilly artists stop in Corinth to perform a show,” he said.

Artists such as Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis popularized rockabilly, with many of these artists recording labels in Memphis, Corinth, Jackson and Booneville, noted Rushing.

“I know many people who recorded at Sun Studio in Memphis,” he said.

Rushing remembers as a child the Corinth Jubilee celebration in the 1970s and a performance by “Jumping” Gene Simmons of Mantachie, not the performer from Kiss.

“Let’s tell these stories up and down Highway 45,” he said.

If the bill passes, “Rockabilly Way” would apply to the road that stretches from the Tennessee state

line to Interstate 22 in Tupelo, the birthplace of Elvis.

“Tennessee tried to get Mississippi involved when they were working on a similar project, but the state wasn’t interested,” Rushing said. “Mississippi dropped the ball.

Now we are trying to build a storyline for Rockabilly’s history.”

Rushing said there are plenty of plans for the highway, such as wall murals in towns along the road.

Selmer, Tenn. has embraced the Rockabilly Highway concept with signage and huge downtown murals. There is an annual Rockabilly Festival and the town even has a Rockabilly Cafe.

“They have had success with bringing people from all over to see those murals,” Rushing said. “We would love to do something like that with the highway, where people could stop in Corinth and Booneville and see these beautiful wall murals.”

There are several state representatives on board for the bill, according to Rushing. He and those involved are hopeful the bill passes through the Senate.

State Rep. Nick Bain of Corinth said he is in favor of the project and sees the potential benefit.

“I am proud to be a part of the creation of The Rockabilly Highway designation for Old 45. These artists are the heart and soul of our heritage and culture and they deserve all the accolades we can bestow. My hope is this will draw people to Northeast Mississippi for generations to come,” said Bain.

Rushing is pushing for others to join the effort to promote Rockabilly Way. “I’ve been around the history of the music,” he said. “My hope is that we can share with others what we discovered.”

Celebration of life for Willie Franklin Cornelius 89, is set for 10 a.m.

Willie died a faithful servant of his Lord and Savior, parting into his loving arms on Feb. 18, 2017, at his residence.

He was born Feb. 9, 1928, to the late Henry and Janie Derrick Cornelius. Willie was a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to many. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and served as an MP in post-World

War II Japan. As a farmer and craftsman, Willie used his talents to care for his family and community. He served as a faithful leader at Overton Hill Community Church for over 50 years. His catfish ponds were a source of fond memories for generations.

Willie is survived by his wife, Lucinda “Cindy” Buchanan Cornelius of Walnut; his sons, Ricky (Susan) Cornelius of Nettleton, Teddy (Stacey) Cornelius of Walnut, Faben Cornelius of Walnut, Jesse (Kristy) Cornelius of Nettleton, and Sammy (Allison) Cornelius of Corinth; his daughters, Patsy Cornelius of New Albany, Pam Tyler of Walnut and Rebecca Cornelius of Walnut; 13 grandchildren, Robert (Mollie) Cornelius of Columbus, Will Cornelius, Brady Cornelius, and Adam Cornelius of Nettleton, Ashley Cornelius and Dakota Cornelius of Guntown, Alex Tyler, Claire Cornelius, Sophia Cornelius, Sara-Chloe Cornelius of Corinth, Katy Ty-

McCorvey, known for Roe v. Wade, dies at 69

DALLAS — Norma McCorvey, whose legal challenge under the pseudonym “Jane Roe” led to the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark decision that legalized abortion but who later became an outspoken opponent of the procedure, died Saturday.

She was 69.

McCorvey died at an assisted living center in Katy, Texas, said journalist Joshua Prager, who is working on a book about McCorvey and was with her and her family when she died. He said she died of heart failure and had been ill for some time.

McCorvey was 22, unmarried, unemployed and pregnant for the third time in 1969 when she sought to have an abortion in Texas, where

the procedure was illegal except to save a woman’s life. The subsequent lawsuit, known as Roe v. Wade, led to the Supreme Court’s 1973 ruling that established abortion rights, though by that time, McCorvey had given birth and given her daughter up for adoption.

Decades later, McCorvey underwent a conversion, becoming an evangelical Christian and joining the anti-abortion movement. A short time later, she underwent another religious conversion and became a Roman Catholic.

“I don’t believe in abortion even in an extreme situation. If the woman is impregnated by a rapist, it’s still a child. You’re not to act as your own God,” she told The Associated Press in 1998.

Trump holds campaign rally

MELBOURNE, Fla. — Just four weeks into his administration, President Donald Trump held a campaign rally in Florida on Saturday, repeating his political promises and continuing his attacks on the “dishonest media.”

“I want to be among my friends and among the people,” Trump told a cheering crowd packed into an airport hangar, praising his “truly great movement.”

Insisting he was the victim of false reporting, Trump said his White House was running “so smoothly” and that he “inherited one big mess.” The president has been trying refocus after reports of disarray and dysfunction within his administration.

Speaking to reporters on Air Force One before the rally, Trump said he was holding a campaign rally because “Life is a campaign.”

“To make America great again is absolutely a campaign,” he said.

“It’s not easy, especially when we’re also fighting the press.”

The rally came during Trump’s third straight weekend at his private south Florida club, Mar-a-Lago. It was another working weekend for the president, who planned to interview at least four potential candidates for the job of national security adviser, a position unexpectedly open after retired Gen. Michael Flynn’s firing early this week.

Trump said Saturday “I have many, many that want the job, they want to really be a part of it.

I’ll make a decision over the next couple of days.”

Scheduled to discuss the job with the president were his acting adviser, retired Army Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg; John Bolton, a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations; Army Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster; and the superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Lt. Gen. Robert Caslen. White House spokesman Sean Spicer said the four interviews were expected to take place Sunday at the private estate.

Finding a new national security adviser was proving to be a challenge for Trump. His first choice,

retired Vice Adm. Robert Harward, turned down the offer.

Trump had also expressed interest in former CIA Director David Petraeus, but Spicer said Saturday that Petraeus was not a finalist. The retired four-star general resigned as CIA director in 2012 and pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor charge of mishandling classified information relating to documents he had provided to his biographer, with whom he was having an affair.

Flynn resigned at Trump’s request Monday after revelations that he misled Vice President Mike Pence about discussing sanctions with Russia’s ambassador to the U.S. during the transition. Trump said in a news conference Thursday that he was disappointed by how Flynn had treated Pence, but did not believe Flynn had done anything wrong by having the conversations.

Trump has lurched from crisis to crisis since the inauguration, including the botched rollout of his immigration order, struggles confirming his Cabinet picks and a near-constant stream of reports about strife within his administration.

“I grew up in a large city, and I always wanted to live in a small city,” he said. “It has worked out wonderfully well for me.”

He joined the Corinth Library as a reference librarian, a job that involved helping students research topics for their

schoolwork in the preGoogle era.

“All we were doing all day long was searching for answers in reference books in that department and throughout the library,” said McMullin.

“The internet has changed that entirely.”

After 14 years, he became collection development librarian and assistant director for the Northeast Regional Library, which includes 13 branches in Alcorn, Tishomingo, Prentiss and Tippah counties. Sixteen years later, he became director for the regional

library, a role he filled for the past 12 years.

With the regional headquarters located in the Corinth branch, he has enjoyed the years spent on Fillmore Street.

“I love the fact that the founders of the library system had such vision in 1969 to build the building we are enjoying today,” he said. “Various librarians — Donna Johnson McDonald, Ann Coker, Brandon Lowrey and now Cody Daniel — have taken good care of this noble structure. I’ve often marveled at the fine architecture, the quality fur-

nishings and the artistic qualities of this building.”

Computers and the internet have eliminated the paper-based card catalog and most reference inquiries, shifting the role of libraries.

“In 1999, the library system started automating and making public access computers available,” said McMullin.

“The public-access computers are really one of our most popular things in the library system. A lot of people still don’t have access to the internet, and they need to get to the internet to do research, to

make job applications, to make resumes.”

Two years ago, the library began offering electronic books and audios, but physical books continue to be popular.

“Daily delivery of books from branch to branch using a courier who transfers items that are placed on hold is one of our most valuable services,” he said. “Active borrowing and lending from outside our system is important, too. We are the second most active library system in the state for making our items available to customers across the state.”

McMullin, who entertained many children as storyteller at the library, also enjoys gardening and playing piano. He is the pianist for Waldron Street Christian Church.

McMullin is looking forward to traveling. A trip to New Mexico, where his sister lives, is on the calendar for the summer, followed by Maine in the fall.

“I hope to visit many libraries across the U.S., especially the small ones like the ones in our region,” said McMullin.

“Botanical gardens have always intrigued me, so they will be a priority for me to visit.”

Forty-two years after arriving, he considers Corinth home and plans to stay.

He is also looking forward to getting out his library card.

“I want to read all of the books on the library’s shelves that I didn’t have time for while I was working,” he said.

SoCal rain eases; north facing storm LOS ANGELES — A huge Pacific storm that parked itself over Southern California and unloaded, ravaging roads, opening sinkholes and leading to the deaths of at least two people, eased off Saturday but it was only a temporary reprieve as new storms took aim farther north.

The National Weather Service predicted drying weather through Sunday followed by the return of wet weather in the region. But while flash flood watches for Southern California were canceled, Northern California and the San Francisco Bay Area were facing a weekend return of heavy rain and winds that lashed them earlier in the week before the storm moves out.

“Stronger southerly winds and widespread flooding will be likely as an atmospheric river (of moisture) takes aim somewhere along the central California Coast,” a weather statement warned.

The approaching rain could cause more problems in the far north where damage to spillways of the Lake Oroville dam forced evacuation of 188,000 people last weekend. As of Saturday, the lake’s water elevation had fallen more than 45 feet.

Last-second launch delay for SpaceX CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Last-minute rocket trouble forced SpaceX on Saturday to delay its inaugural launch from NASA’s historic moon pad.

SpaceX halted the

countdown with just 13 seconds remaining. The second-stage steering issue actually cropped up several minutes earlier. But with just an instant to get the unmanned Falcon rocket airborne, flight controllers could not resolve the problem in time.

The next launch attempt — provided everything can be fixed quickly — would be Sunday morning.

The Falcon remains at Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Complex 39A, waiting to soar on a space station delivery mission. It’s the same pad where Americans flew to the moon almost a half-century ago.

Blind cleric serving life sentence dies BUTNER, N.C. — A federal prison official says a blind Egyptian cleric serving a life sentence in the United States in connection with a failed plot to blow up landmarks in New York City has died.

Sheik Omar AbdelRahman died early Saturday. Abdel-Rahman was sentenced to life in prison after his 1995 conviction for his advisory role in a plot to blow up landmarks, including the United Nations, and several bridges and tunnels.

Kenneth McKoy of the Federal Correction Complex in Butner, North Carolina, said Rahman died at 5:40 a.m. after a long battle with diabetes and coronary artery disease.

Monsters need permit for parks

At the height of the game’s popularity last summer, the large crowds it attracted to one Milwaukee park left county officials at a loss for how to deal with the sudden influx of players and the trash they left behind. With more augmented-reality games in development, the permitting process Milwaukee County set up puts it at the forefront of an emerging challenge for government officials who want to regulate them.

“We’re prepared for all of them now,” said County Supervisor Sheldon Wasserman, who wrote the proposal setting up a permitting process that County Executive Chris Abele signed on Feb. 10.

Other places where officials are looking at how to handle such games include Illinois, where lawmakers are considering requiring companies to remove sites from games when they receive a request to do so. The bill pending in the Illinois Legislature is a response to heavy foot-traffic last year at a suburban Chicago park with protected dunes.

Kate Edwards, the executive director of the International Game Developers Association, said in an email that local and state regulations haven’t been on developers’ radars because there haven’t been any “that specifically affect game content or design.”

Frierson moves on taxing internet sales CLINTON — Some tax experts and conservative groups are questioning a proposed Mississippi regulation that would require large sellers to collect taxes on internet sales.

Revenue Commissioner Herb Frierson agrees the rule, not yet enacted, challenges U.S. Supreme Court precedent forbidding states from requiring tax collections by companies without instate locations. He says seeking court reconsideration of past rulings is the point.

Though Mississippi lawmakers are considering a bill to tax sales over the internet, Frierson is moving forward with his own plan to require retailers to collect the equivalent of a sales tax for goods sold into Mississippi. He cites as authority a 1988 law that attempted to tax mail-order sales.

Opponents, though, question whether Frierson has the power to enact a rule flying the face of a Supreme Court decision.

Dogs leave shelters than earlier thought STARKVILLE — Two Mississippi State University researchers say that more dogs go home from animal shelters than previously thought.

Veterinary Medicine professors Kimberly Woodruff and David Smith surveyed more than 400 shelters across the country. Us-

ing their findings, they estimate that shelters nationwide take in 5.5 million dogs each year.

Of that total, nearly 1 million are returned to previous owners and 2.6 million are adopted by new owners. Nearly 800,000 are transferred, while about the same number of dogs are killed by shelters.

Smith says shelters in the Southeast are transferring large numbers of dogs to other regions where there are fewer dogs. He says that means fewer dogs may be euthanized, but says those dogs could be spreading heartworms and other regional diseases, indicating a need to emphasize disease control.

State investigates death after jailing ROBINSONVILLE — Officials are investigating why a man died after being jailed in Tunica County.

Derek Smith was arrested after a Feb. 9 bar fight in Robinsonville.

Tunica County Chief Deputy Randy Stewart tells WREG-TV that Smith hit a deputy and was charged with resisting arrest, disturbing the peace and public drunkenness.

Stewart says a deputy shocked Smith twice with a stun gun to make him “controllable,” but says deputies didn’t use excessive force. Stewart tells WMC-TV that Smith refused medical assessment when initially arrested. Tunica County on Friday released video of the bar fight preceding the arrest.

As his girlfriend was bailing him out Friday, Smith was found to need medical attention. He died later in a Memphis, Tennessee, hospital.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is examining Smith’s death.

Warren County asks state to move jail VICKSBURG — Warren County supervisors say they may ask state lawmakers to let them place its jail outside the city limits of Vicksburg. Lawmakers have waived the requirement that a joint city-county jail be within a mile of the city’s limits for other counties.

Supervisors tell The Vicksburg Post (http:// bit.ly/2lsP2Wu) they may ask for a bill waiving the requirement that a jail be located within the city limits. Such a bill would have to be introduced in the Legislature by March 24.

Board of Supervisors President Richard George told The Vicksburg Post that he wants to ensure the jail is the best location for future growth, and also wants a flat site in the hilly county.

“If we’re going to buy a piece of property and spend somewhere between $8 to $12 million for a jail, we need to have the opportunity, at least if we’re going to pay for it, to put it where we think it needs to be for the future of Warren County and Vicksburg,” George said.

State lawmakers say they will support a bill if Sheriff Martin Pace, Vicksburg and county officials agree.

Young entrepreneur learns early to ‘love’ what he does

Walking in to Taylor Wick & Co., one is immediately enveloped in a warm, inviting atmosphere where shoppers can feel at home.

Located at 105 Taylor Street, next to Sweet Sensations bakery, in the revitalized SoCo district, the shop sells a variety of personal and gift items.

The store’s owner and manager, Stearman McCalister, uses items sold in the store to add to the atmosphere and appeal.

Upon entering, one will notice the flickering lights and pleasant aroma of scented candles. Complementing the antique, painted wood walls and ceiling, there are unique weathered signs to draw the eye, as well as art created by local artists. The candles, signs, and art are all for sale.

There is soft lighting built into the ceiling and lots of natural light pouring in through the large front window and the door.

The items sold are unique and McCalister put a lot of thought into hand-picking what would be sold in his shop. Taylor Wick & Co. sells bath items, jewelry, regionally-oriented gifts, bow ties, candles, wax melts, duffels, signs, pillows, unique items for your home, clothing, distinctive men’s gift items and much more.

Shoppers will enjoy exploring each nook as their eyes are drawn from one area to the next.

McCalister’s youth is perhaps as striking as the sophistication of his store. A Corinth native and 2014 graduate of Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science, McCalister began college with the medical profession in mind. However, even while in nursing school, he started a company in 2015 — The Beau Tie Co. — which was an online shop selling custom bow ties. He also sold tee-shirts.

One might ask, how does one go from nursing school to owning a store?

McCalister laughs at the irony. “It was very random,” he said.

He said he made it about halfway through nursing school and he said

he didn’t “love” what he was doing. Business, on the other hand, seemed to be something to which he had a natural talent.

McCalister said he had always enjoyed selling, but wanted to be more involved with people than his online store would allow. He had worked for his uncle, Trey Albright, and he asked Albright about putting a store in the SoCo district at his current location. He said he had in mind for Albright to open the store and McCalister would run it.

“He [Albright] said, ‘Well, why don’t you open a store,’” he said with a laugh. “I liked the idea and, in about three months, it went from an idea to actually opening.”

Now, the young entrepreneur has had to learn to run a business successfully, and judging by the success he has seen thus far, it appears he has caught on quickly. When asked how running his own business compares to nursing school, his answer was quick.

“I know it sounds cliched, but it doesn’t feel like work. People keep telling me to hire someone to help run the store, but I love doing it myself,” he said.

McCalister visits stores in other areas and watches closely what people are interested in buying. He has also branched out. He is personally making wax melts and also candles by hand using recycled wine bottles. He said getting the fragrance formula right is a tricky part of the process.

Looking toward the future, he said hopes to continue to grow and evolve his business. Working toward the expansion of his own expertise, he has begun college online, but this time he is working on a degree in business management with a focus on small business.

Late to bed, late to rise makes mom, kids tardy D E A R ABBY: I will be spending a couple of months visiting my d a u g h t e r, who is a Abigail single mom. has Van Buren She asked me to help her Dear Abby wake her 8and 11-yearold kids in the morning and have them ready for school.

Unfortunately, she works some distance away from her home.

The kids attend private school and are involved in sports.

The problem is, they eat and go to bed later than they should.

In the morning, they can’t wake up or get out of bed.

She reminds them repeatedly to get ready, but when it’s time to leave and they’re not dressed or haven’t eaten breakfast, my daughter begins raising her voice.

Leaving late means the kids arrive at school late, and my daughter is late for work.

surprised the teachers haven’t complained about your grandchildren’s constant tardiness, or that your daughter’s boss hasn’t warned her about her constant lateness. It’s time you and your daughter had a private chat.

As you have stated, your grandchildren are going to bed so late it’s interfering not only with their school schedule, but their mother’s work schedule.

The obvious solution would be for her to get the kids to bed at an earlier hour, with lights off and no electronics.

You can enforce it while you are there, but unless your daughter is willing to continue to do that, nothing will change.

DEAR ABBY: For the past five years, I have been using the (very small!) exercise room in my apartment complex every day after work.

It’s an important part of my routine.

A couple of weeks ago, a new girl started coming into the exercise room shortly after I start my workout (it’s a little crowded, but no problem).

Last week, she started coming in just a few minutes before I get there.

She puts her TV show on (very loudly), uses the machine I always use, and when I walk in at

my usual time, I must use an old machine I don’t like and watch her horrible show.

I have lived here longer and feel I have earned my time in the gym, and she is being sneaky by coming in just before I do.

I cannot come in earlier since I get there as soon as I get off work.

I’m tempted to exert my seniority! I feel wronged, even though I know it’s not my personal gym. Is there anything I can do when I feel snubbed like this? -- WORKED UP (NOT OUT) IN OHIO DEAR WORKED UP: One of the sometimes unwritten rules of gyms is that the person who arrives first gets to choose which machine to use and whatever television show he or she prefers.

Kossuth sweeps state bowling Kossuth swept the 3A state high school bowling titles Friday in Jackson, marking a first in program history.

Both teams have been in the finals the past three seasons with the girls owning one state title already, but it’s the first boys/girls sweep for KHS. Congratulations to coach Michael Lee and the staff and students on their tremendous accomplishment.

Richy Harrelson: What baseball is all about

Richy Harrelson has been to the pinnacle of collegiate baseball, and now he’s back home doing what he was meant to do.

The Iuka native — a former standout for Iuka, Tishomingo County and Ole Miss — is now in his second full season as the head baseball coach at Northeast Mississippi Community College.

So far, the ride has been a really good one for Harrelson.

Known as “the bazooka from Iuka,” the Tigers skipper certainly earned that nickname during a playing career that saw plenty of superlatives.

During his high school stint at Iuka/Tishomingo County High Scool, Harrelson was part of a team that still holds the national record for a four-year program as they compiled a 118-36 mark.

During his senior year with the Braves, he was named a Dandy Dozen selection and first-team All-State on the diamond.

But baseball wasn’t the only sport he was good at. Altough he professes he wasn’t all that good at basketball, it was his first love, and he played at TCHS. He was also good at football and played for the Braves gridiron squads, where they fielded some winning teams.

But after all was said and done, Harrelson knew baseball was where his future would lie.

And, boy, did he make the best of it.

“I really loved basketball but I wasn’t all that good at it so I figured out baseball is what I was going to play collegiately,” he commented in a recent interview in his office on the Northeast campus in Booneville. “Our high school team was really good and I knew I had a talent for it, and coach (Jerry) Long said to me at a camp once that I’d make a good coach some day. That’s when it hit me that baseball was my future.”

Harrelson’s 1989 Iuka Chieftan squad won the baseball state championhip when he was a freshman, and they played for

the title twice more during his sophomore and junior years.

Harrelson grew up a Mississippi State fan, with both his parents being MSU graduates, but the Bulldogs didn’t come courting Harrelson.

Ole Miss did.

“I was recruited by Delta State, and several other smaller colleges and got calls from other SEC schools at times, but coach (Don) Kessinger recruited me because I could play multiple infield positions and pitch occasionally,” Harrelson said. “And I wouldn’t trade anything for my time there.”

After an outstanding freshman campaign in Oxford, he

was named a Freshman AllAmerican. The following season he was selected to the FirstTeam All-SEC West.

Asked if he had a favorite memory from his Ole Miss days, he was quick to jump right to his favorite story.

“We played Mississippi State for the Mayor’s Trophy in Jackson that year when they (Bulldogs) were number one in the country,” Harrelson recalled.

“It was the bottom of the ninth and they were up by a run. We had runners on second and third and two out. Of course, first base was open, but (former Please see HARRELSON | 11A

No. 15 Florida holds on to beat Mississippi State Associated Press

STARKVILLE — Florida is a team that has occasionally put up huge offensive numbers this season, including 106 and 114 points in games over the past month.

But the shots weren’t falling on Saturday.

So the 15th-ranked Gators resorted to Plan B: A little grit, a little luck and a whole lot of defense in a 57-52 vic-

tory over Mississippi State.

“We’ve been able to find different ways to win different games,” Florida coach Mike White said. “It’s been different guys night in and night out and this is just another example.”

Florida (22-5, 12-2 Southeastern Conference) extended its winning streak to eight games, which is the longest during White’s two-year

tenure. The Gators also won their first game since starting center John Egbunu suffered a season-ending knee injury.

Chris Chiozza scored 14 points and KeVaughn Allen added 11. Sophomore forward Kevarrius Hayes — who now has an expanded role because of Egbunu’s injury — finished with nine points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots.

Hayes had a crucial block during the final minute when Mississippi State was trying to push ahead. Chiozza said the Gators might be known for offense, but are more than capable of handling defensive showdowns.

“You just have to want to do it,” Chiozza said. “We’ve got good athletes, size and speed. So we just fly around and communicate.”

Macon’s career-best 30 points leads Arkansas past Ole Miss The Associated Press

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Daryl Macon has had the typical ups and downs many juniorcollege transfers experience in their first seasons after arriving on the major college basketball scene during his first go-around with Arkansas.

The Razorbacks junior was at his absolute best on Saturday, scoring a career-high 30 points as Arkansas (20-7, 9-5 Southeastern Conference) continued its late-season

push toward the NCAA Tournament with a 98-80 win over Mississippi.

Just three weeks after being held scoreless in a loss at Oklahoma State, Macon scored in double figures for the fifth time in six games — finishing a career-best 6 of 9 on 3-pointers and 10 of 13 from the field overall.

The 6-foot-3 guard topped his previous high of 23 points, set against Texas in December — capping off his career performance with a late

3-pointer before exiting to a raucous ovation, just days after meeting with Razorbacks coach Mike Anderson about his role with the team.

“I’m playing into the system now, being patient and not rushing anything,” Macon said. “I’ve been having a few talks with coach over the weekend, and he told me to just trust him, trust the system, and it will all come. Just buy into the coaching, and I felt like that’s what I did tonight, and these were the re-

sults.”

Arkansas entered the game following its most important win of the season, an 83-76 victory at No. 21 South Carolina on Wednesday.

The Razorbacks followed up that performance with an electric first-half encore for the energized Bud Walton Arena crowd — leading by as many as 12 points on the way to a 46-37 halftime edge. Macon had 15 of his points in the half, connecting on 5 of 7 shots overall and 3 of 5 3-pointers.

Harrelson reached the mountaintop of collegiate baseball when he was a volunteer assistant on the Southern Mississippi coaching staff in 2009 as the Golden Eagles made it to Omaha for the only time in program history. They lost to Texas — in a game Harrelson still says USM should have won — and North Carolina. But getting to Omaha takes not just a lot of talent and coaching but luck as well.

Harrelson is a perfect fit at Northeast, not only because it’s just a few miles from home, but because of his love and passion for the game. And he hopes some of that rubs off on his players.

“I love competition.

That’s why I do what I do. Back in high school, we had really good team chemistry and we worked hard every day, not just at practice. I love a quote I read from (Chicago Cubs manager) Joe Madden that says, ‘Sometimes players

get caught up in the physical/mechanical part of the game so much that they forget to compete. At the end of the day, it comes down to what team competes better in the moment.’”

Asked if baseball has changed since he was in school, Harrelson said : “Nothing inside the lines has changed at all. Baseball is still baseball. But the kids have changed. So many of them are caught up in how many followers they have on Facebook but that doesn’t make you a good player.

“Missing practice was not an option when I played,” he continued.

“These days are completely different. The kids miss practice when they have somewhere they’d rather go and things like that.

And you can’t say things to their parents like you could back in the day. It’s a completely different society we live in.”

Harrelson and his wife Hope, formerly of Weir, Mississippi, are the proud parents of son Gage, 13, and daughter Marycille, 10.

In an intersting sidenote in Harrelson’s career, he coached for several years at Hillcrest Christian in Jackson (where he met Hope) where he mentored future Rebels and professional players Seth Smith and Stephen Head. He has also had a hand in coaching numerous others who went on to play collegiately and professionally, but what makes him the proudest is seeing them grow into responsible and successful adults.

It has been quite the ride for Harrelson so far. But there’s so much more to accomplish for the Northeast head coach.

4-H Public Speaking Contest T

he annual 4-H public speaking contest was held on Feb. 11, at the MSU Extension in Alcorn County.

The public speaking contest allows youth ages 8-18 the opportunity to

build self-confidence by learning at a young age how to speak to an audience.

Youth ages 7 and under are allowed to participate but are not judged and are not placed.

Junior II participants, ages 12-13, were Goldee Butler – First Place Blue Ribbon, Maggie Pannell – Second Place Blue Ribbon, and Marley Thrasher – Third Place Blue Ribbon.

The Senior II winners, ages 16-18, were Katie Jo Pannell – First Place Blue Ribbon, Jonathan Pannell – Second Place Blue Ribbon, and Madison DeGraffenreid – Third Place Blue Ribbon.

Junior I winner, ages 10-11, was Daniel Beene – First Place Blue Ribbon.

Senior I participants, ages 14-15, were Abigail Pannell - Blue Ribbon, Sarah Mitchell – Second Place Blue Ribbon, Daniel Laudadio - First Place Blue Ribbon, and Goldman Butler –Third Place Blue Ribbon.

‘Boomer’s Bucket List’ is a clean, sweet romance about life

Appalachian Trail, seeing the Great Pyramids, and visiting China. So will you take the leap and fulfill your lifelong wishes someday or, as in “Boomer’s Bucket List” by Sue Pethick, will time and patience run out first?

She didn’t choose him.

It was the other way around.

That’s what Jennifer Westbrook always recalled about the day she

saw the squirming litter of Golden-Labs for sale.

Each of the puppies was adorable, and choosing was impossible but when the seller suggested patience, Boomer picked Jennifer.

He was her best friend, her roommate, and she adored him, so when Jennifer learned that fiveyear-old Boomer had a fatal illness and that he had just a month to live,

she was heartsick. She instantly knew that she needed to make every moment count for her dog, so she told her boss that she was taking a month-long vacation.

Jennifer was taking Boomer on a road trip.

Once upon a time, Nathan Koslow was Chicago’s most-read newspaper columnist. That was before budget cuts and downsizing, before Nate lost his beat, and before he’d take any job his editor tossed his way. Desperate for an assignment, in fact, he agreed to fold a brotherly favor into a feature story on U.S. Route 66 and, along the journey, Nate met Jennifer.

He liked her instantly, but he always said the wrong things and she was prickly. Boomer seemed to love Nate, but Nate wasn’t sure about Jenni-

fer…

When the favor for his brother fell apart, Nate was surprised, then, that Jennifer invited him along on Boomer’s road trip. Both were surprised that strangers were so very helpful; people everywhere went out of their way to pet and talk to Boomer, which didn’t make sense.

And then Jennifer learned about a website, and a contest, expensive prizes, and her PR firm all over it. She was angry – how dare they benefit from her private pain? and it got worse when she learned that Nate was somehow involved.

Jennifer wanted to finish the trip without Nate - but what would Boomer want?

I spent a lot of time heavy-sighing at the opening chapters of “Boomer’s Bucket List.” Beautiful woman, check. Handsome stranger, check. Accidental meeting, GoldenLab dog, romance, major misunderstanding, check, check, check, annnnnd check. Yawn.

Ah, but then a side-story that author Sue Pethick throws in – the one that seemed out-of-place at first - changes everything: the whole tale’s tone, its pace, and even the path it seemed to be on. That side-story perfectly tosses the predictability aside which makes this entire book a lot more fun to read, even though we sense that happily-everafter will contain a very sad note.

If you want something squeaky-clean to share with any teen or adult you know, this is it. No profanity, no steamy scenes, no problems – just a nice romance with a few curves.

That’s “Boomer’s Bucket List,” so jump on it.

Carter Bonds of Corinth recently ser ved as a page in the Mississippi House of Representatives. Pages generally run errands for officials and House staff. Bonds stands with Speaker of the House Philip Gunn and Representative Bubba Carpenter, who sponsored his visit. Carter is the son of Paula Bonds and attends Corinth High S chool. W hen asked about the week, Carter said, “Being a page was a great honor that gave me insight on how the legislature works.”

Manuel Franco named Rotary student of month Manuel Aldair Franco, son of Manuel Sr. and Irene Franco has been selected as the Rotary Student of the Month for the month of February.

He is the grandson of Juan Franco and Maria FrancoTellez as well as Zenaida and Fernando Pech-Ortiz.

Manuel’s grandparents reside in Campeche, Mexico.

Manuel has been selected as Mr. CHS (Corinth High School) by his fellow student body, a prestigious award for which he is extremely gratified.

He has also been inducted into the Corinth High School Class of 2017 Hall of Fame. He is currently ranked 6th in his graduat-

ing class of 120 students at Corinth High School.

He has a GPA of 4.29, and his highest achieved ACT composite score is a 27. He has achieved an AICE Diploma with Merit, which he will receive on his graduation in June of 2017. Manuel has received the Principal’s Honor Roll award for the past three scholastic years.

Manuel enjoys attending leadership conferences, where he is privileged to meet fellow youth leaders from distinct areas of our geographical area.

He is an alumnus of 2015 Junior Leadership Alcorn.

He was also selected to represent Corinth High School along with two other classmates at the 2016 Rotary Youth Leadership Conference in Olive Branch, MS. In early 2016, he was also selected to in-

terview for the ACE Power Washington Youth Tour.

He attended the 2016 American Legion Mississippi Boys State at the University of Mississippi, where he was selected by fellow delegates from distinguished parts of the state to serve as their City Project Alderman for his particular group.

He returned to the University of Mississippi a few weeks later to attend the 2016 APEX Leadership Summit at Ole Miss, for which he was one of the fortunate students accepted from all of the state’s high schools.

He and his teammates achieved first place team overall over the course of APEX. His Junior Year, he was also elected by his fellow classmates to serve as the Junior Class secretary/treasurer.

Manuel is bilingual,

fluent in the English and Spanish language, which has facilitated him to serve community members who are unable to communicate due to a language barrier.

He served as a translator at the 2015 Lighthouse Christmas Toy Store.

He has also volunteered at the Corinth Elementary School Fall Festival through the FACS Club, the Alcorn County Basketball tournament through the Interact Club, Caterpillar Youth Adopt-AHighway through JLA, the Corinth XC annual Color Run, and the Brookdale Retirement Home in Oxford, MS through APEX. As a member of the student council, Manuel was selected to be an escort for the Corinth High School Class of 2015 and 2016 graduations.

As a member of many

clubs, Manuel’s favorite has been his 4-year membership of the Corinth Cross Country team. On November 7, 2016 he became an MHSAA 4-A cross-country state champion along with his fellow teammates.

Athletically, he has also participated in the Corinth High School track team.

Scholastically, he has been a previous member of the FACS Club, Mayor’s Youth Council, Interact Club, and Foreign Language Club. He is still a member of C-club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes,Corinth Wi-Fi and Video Production Crew, Mu Alpha Theta mathematics club, and the National Honor Society.

Manuel has received various academic awards which include first place in Spanish I and Nutrition and Wellness, second

place in AICE American History and AICE Global Perspectives, and third place in Research Using Technology’s Informational Tools. Other honors include his honorable mention and publication in the 2014 Crossroads Poetry Project as well as his induction into the National Honor Society, and Principal’s Honor Roll All Year Award for the past three years.

Manuel will be attending The University of Mississippi in the fall, where he will be attending the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College, which he has been accepted into. He will pursue a degree in Biomedical Engineering. For his graduate studies he wishes to attend the University of Mississippi Medical in Jackson to become an Orthopedic Surgeon.

Oasis Medical Center is offering “Preparing for Baby” classes for first time pregnant moms.

Classes will meet on Tuesday mornings from 10:30 a.m. until 12 p.m. noon on Feb. 21, 28, March 7, and 14 at 2421 Proper Street in Corinth. Participants will learn about their developing babies, labor and delivery, basic baby care and valuable parenting information. Home Invasion Week Crossroads Martial Arts will offer a week of home invasion seminars on Monday, Feb. 20–Friday, Feb. 24. Sharing Hearts Sharing Hearts is an adult care program offering a one day a week day care for adults suffering from Alzheimer’s or any other form of dementia.
