The trees of court square are due for some trimming and pruning after some recent concerns about falling limbs. A specialist with the Mississippi State University Extension Service recently assessed the trees and submitted a report to Alcorn County. The Board of Supervisors is following the report’s recommendation to hire a certified arborist who is licensed, bonded and insured to perform the prescribed trimming. The board this week approved advertising for the work. Local Extension Agent Patrick Poindexter accompanied the specialist on the tree examination. “We did a complete walkaround, mainly looking at the older oak trees, because those are the ones that seem to be presenting some of the issues with dead or dying limbs that are falling out,” he said. The report concludes that the trees are basically healthy but need some removal of dead limbs. “Some of them are getting pretty old, especially that one on the southeast corner,” said Poindexter. “Anytime you’re dealing with older trees like that, maintenance is very important, and getting them trimmed correctly is very im-
Residents are being asked to be on the lookout for a backhoe stolen from a local water association. The Bobcat E42 Excavator was taken, along with a truck and trailer, from the Alcorn Water Association’s well at Glen during the early morning hours on Monday. Alcorn County Sheriff’s Department Investigator Tommy Hopkins said the thieves tore down a fence to drive away with the equipment. The truck was located around 10:30 a.m. the same morning near the intersection of County Road 100 and Highway 350 after a passerby noticed it abandoned and contacted authorities. The trailer was also recovered around 3 p.m. Monday in Tishomingo County when a landowner on County Road 363 saw it and became suspicious. Hopkins said they believe its possible the suspects may have transferred the Bobcat from the stolen trailer to their own vehicle and someone may have seen them do it. He thinks it’s likely the excavator is still in the area. Anyone who may have information on the theft is urged to call the sheriff’s department office at 662-286-5521. Tips may also be called in to the Crime Stoppers of North Mississippi anonymous tip line at 1-800773-TIPS (8477).
