Drug Court is not easy, but it has seen success. A Circuit Court judge provided an informative overview of why Drug Court was a good move in a climate of rising drug-related crime. First District Circuit Court Judge “Jim” Seth Pounds and First District Drug Court Coordinator Jennifer Cummings recently spoke to the Corinth Rotary Club about the usefulness and the triumphs of Drug Court. No matter the size of the city involved, Pounds said they all
have a single commonality crime. The area of the First District he serves includes Alcorn, Tishomingo and Prentiss counties. Other First District Circuit Court Judges are Thomas J. Gardner III, Paul S. Funderburk and James L. Roberts, Jr., who altogether serve seven counties. Pounds provided some numbers to the gathering to illustrate the growth of the crime rate since he started around 1988 as assistant district attorney under Johnny Young. A 29-year-old McNairy County, Tenn. man faces multiple charges after a weekend struggle with Alcorn County deputies. District judge delays Benjamin sentencing Associated Press
JACKSON — Sentencing has been delayed until Friday for a former Alcorn County state senator who pleaded guilty to paying bribes for prison contracts. U.S. District Judge Henry T. Wingate had been set Monday to sentence Irb Benjamin of Madison, but rescheduled the hearing last week. Lawyer Joseph Hollomon asked for the delay, saying Benjamin needs more time to prepare and “attend to medical issues.” Benjamin admitted in court that he paid bribes to former Corrections Commissioner Christopher Epps to obtain contracts at state prison work centers and county jails. The Corinth Municipal Court Clerk is a active volunteer and board member of Habitat for Humanity and the Alcorn County Fair Committee. He also currently serves as the president of the Corinth Kiwanis Club. “I’ve always said that a person should make each day count,” he said. “Volunteering and helping out in the community I love is one way I can achieve this.” Elliott is also the co-owner of Well Invested LLC, a property management company who oversees more than 20 Alcorn County properties. Married to Robin for 31 years, Elliott has two children, Chad Cornelius and Briley Elliott. The couple has three grandchildren, Addie, Riley Jane and John Williams. Elliott is also a member of First United Methodist Church where he serves on the administrative board as the church’s Lay Leader.

Fire strikes the Corinth landfill for the second time in recent weeks. Nine grass fires have been reported in the city limits over the past month due to dry conditions.
