Supervisors seek grant for KCAB BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

Alcorn County is pursuing grant funding on behalf of Keep Corinth-Alcorn Beautiful to support another household hazardous waste disposal event later this year.

The Board of Supervisors this week approved submission of the grant application seeking $25,000 from the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality. “The community has now started to recognize this as an

annual event and save up their hazardous household items for this day for collection,” said Joanie Vaughn, representing KCAB. The event is tentatively scheduled for Sept. 23. The 2016 event had 344 vehi-

BES transforms into ‘Seussville’ BY L.A. STORY lastory@dailycorinthian.com

There was an undercurrent of excitement in the air that provided a holiday-like feeling at Seussville Friday — a.k.a. Biggersville Elementary School. All week students at BES had activities planned in honor of the recent National Read Across America Day, which was also the birthday of the legendary children’s author know as “Dr. Seuss.” While the day was celebrated nationally on March 2, the school wanted to extend it and honor the occasion by using the

week before spring break to celebrate literacy. The week culminated in “Fantastic Friday” where students could dress up as their favorite book characters of any book, not just Dr. Seuss. Coordinators of the event scheduled a “character parade,” which was originally supposed to be held on the football field, but was held in the gym instead, due to rain the night before. Students came out of the school and into the afternoon sunshine before the parade. Laughter and excited chatter from students, both costumed

and not, bubbled up into the air like tiny “whos.” As the students paraded into the gym, costumed teachers danced and kept up the spirit of a true celebration. There was reading, dancing, cheering and music. “I’m sad it’s going to be over,” said BES and BHS Librarian and event coordinator Sonja McRight. She later added, “We have just had a really good week.” The parade and the program in the gym were the pinnacle Please see SEUSSVILLE | 2A
