Session turns to state’s budget woes BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com
With less than one month before the end of the current legislative session focus has turned to the state’s budget woes. So far the state has collected about $38 million less in revenue this year compared to the same period one year ago. General tax collections are down
as well by some $56 million. Corporate income tax collections, sales tax collections and personal income tax collections are also down. “Unfortunately, Mississippi has not seen a positive month since June 2015,” said Sen. Rita Potts Parks (RAlcorn, Tishomingo, Tippah). “This year is already off to a bad start. We saw double digit shortfalls in January
and February, and March collections are below normal.” Last year, legislators funded the Rainy Day Fund to take care of the shortfall. Gov. Phil Bryant has already made multiple cuts to state agencies and dipped into the Rainy Day Fund this year to offset possible revenue Please see SESSION | 2

Fugitive caught; faces 6 charges
‘Last chance’
BY MARK BOEHLER editior@dailycorinthian.com
A fugitive wanted on six felony charges in Corinth has been apprehended in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Corinth Police Department Detective Dell Green told the Daily Corinthian that 30-yearold Jamar Allen was picked up Monday and was being held by the Milwaukee Police Department. He is awaiting extradition and Corinth police personnel will travel there to pick up the suspect. Green was told no details on how the suspect was apprehended. Allen faces two counts of aggravated assault, one count of shooting into a dwelling and another count of a firearm possession by a convicted felon. Those charges stem from a Feb. 13 shooting on Mitchell Street. Green said the suspect was originally from Wisconsin but has been in Corinth for about a year. A street address was still not available for Allen.

Snow hits, freeze next BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com
A rare Spring Break snowfall caught locals off guard on Saturday, and a hard freeze is in the forecast for this week. The National Weather Service in Memphis issued a Freeze Watch for the Crossroads area late Monday with freezing temperatures excepted to arrive midweek. A Freeze Watch is in effect from Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning with low temperatures expected to reach 21 degrees in some areas. “A Freeze Watch means sub-freezing temperatures are possible,” said NWS. “These conditions could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation. A hard freeze capable of damaging blooming fruit trees, flowering bushes and tender vegeta-

He is also wanted in connection with a kidnapping and assault situation that happened in December. The suspect faces kidnapping and aggravated assault charges in that case. The Feb. 13 shooting happened about 2:30 a.m. at 1219 Mitchell Street. Green identified the victims as Charity Payne, 28, of the same address, and her boyfriend, Larry Hope, 28, of Byhalia. Payne and Hope were both hospitalized after the shooting. A four-year-old female who was also present at the home was unharmed. Green said it appears Allen had been at Payne’s residence on Mitchell Street earlier in the evening, and a physical altercation occurred. The shooter fled the scene on foot and law enforcement agencies have been looking for Allen since the shooting and the kidnapping situation on Dec. 21.
