KOSSUTH — An overnight re destroyed one of Alcorn County ’s popular restaurants. Three re departments responded to the re at The Hitching Post on Mississippi Highway 2 a little after 1 a.m. Thursday morning. “The kitchen part of it was fully involved when the rst truck came on the scene with ames going through the roof, ” said Kossuth Fire Chief Adron Hodum. He said it took remen about an hour and 20 minutes to contain the blaze. They left the
scene at 4:45 a.m. but were called out again later as hot spots rekindled. Biggersville and Southwest re departments also battled the re, which left behind only the shell of the restaurant. The Hitching Post was built in 1980. “It is a staple of that community and there are a lot of memories there for different folks, ” County Fire Coordinator Ricky Gibens said by phone as he was headed to the scene to survey the damage. He recalled that one of the rst times he dined with his wife was at The Hitching Post.

Woman killed in one-vehicle wreck One woman was killed around 3:30 p.m. Thursday on Alcorn County Road 655 — about a halfmile off County Road 611 — near the Tippah County line. The female driver appeared to be heading north on CR 655 when her Ford Taurus crossed into the southbound lane. The vehicle seemed to go airborne before landing upside down and facing south. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, but officials were still contacting family members so the name couldn’t be released. Union Center Fire and Rescue, Walnut Fire and Rescue, and the Walnut Police Department all responded with along the Alcorn County Sheriff’s Department to the one-vehicle accident. The Alcorn County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash.

Tate Baptist Church planning special weekend

The Corinth School District Board of Trustees adopted a calendar for the 2012-2013 school year with some minor tweaks and briey discussed the possible school start date changes under consideration in the Legislature. The board adopted a calendar Monday that will send students back to school with a full day on Thursday, Aug. 9. GLEN — Alcorn Central is planning a day of fun. The Lady Bears also hope to make a few bucks. The Central Fun Day is slated for Saturday at the softball eld with numerous activities lined up from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. “This is going to be a huge day with the whole teamed involved, ” said softball head coach Charlette Foster. “There will be stuff set up every where. ” Central is using proceeds from the day to purchase new softball uniforms and equipment. An inside yard sale that consists of furniture, computers, televisions and clothes from every size, according to Foster, will be held in the elementary gym next to the softball eld. “This yard sale is going to be different, ” said the coach. “We are not pricing anything, the customer will tell us what they want to pay for the item. ” A silent auction will also be part of the day. “Businesses have been very gracious, ” said Foster. “There have been some nice gifts do-

Tate Baptist Church is taking a deep look within. The words of two former Southeastern Conference football players are expected to help the church with its revived service to God. Tate is set to begin the restoration process with its Returning to God Weekend. The three-day event begins tonight at 7 p.m. Special speakers will also lead services on Saturday and Sunday. “The objective is to see our church refreshed and renewed, ” said pastor Bro. Mickey Trammel. “It will be a time to look within and see if anything is preventing us from being closer to God as we once were. ” Dr. Tommy Vinson and Tonya Joslin will kickoff the weekend tonight.
