Work on a drainage project in the Alcorn Drive area Friday morning resulted in a severed water line. Gas & Water Department Manager John Rhodes said it took about 90 minutes to make repairs. Some water customers on Alcorn Drive and U.S. 72 had a brief service outage as a result of the accident, including some nearby medical facilities. Traffic also had to be rerouted.

Terry Caffey had everything taken away from him on March 1, 2008. His wife and two sons were murdered with Caffey shot five times and left for dead that early morning in Alba, Texas. The story took another tragic turn when investigators determined the triple murders were orchestrated by Caffey’s own daughter. “His story is one of forgiveness,” said Tate Baptist Church pastor Brother Mickey Trammel. “Those who are harboring hatred in their heart need to hear what he says.” Caffey has since remarried and is father to a pair of stepsons. His message is how he came to forgive his daughter and three others charged with the brutal crime. He is slated

to speak at Tate Baptist at 10:45 a.m. Sunday. Caffey — whose book “Terror by Night” details that night of crime — uses his Across America Ministries to visit churches and schools around the country, encouraging youth to take a stand for Christ. He encourages them to commit by taking a stand to be different by not following the crowd; saying no to drugs, alcohol and saving themselves for marriage; obeying their parents; and staying in school and getting a good education. “His story was in the national news for some time,” added Trammel. “His daughter got hooked up with the wrong crowd and had her boyfriend and his friend try to kill the whole family then burn the house.” Around 3 a.m. on March 1, Please see CAFFEY | 2

Wheelchair competitor ready to break 10K record BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

Michael Mills has won the Corinth Coca-Classic 10K. The Amory native is now coming back to Mississippi for a record. Mills, the 2006 winner in the wheelchair division, is shooting to break the record-time of friend Doug Price in the 31st running of the event.

“I lived in Mississippi most of my life and have done the Corinth 10K three or four times,” said the Social Security Administration employee in Covington, Ga. “I couldn’t pick a better place to come back home and race than Corinth.” Mills, paralyzed from the waist down after his car got hit head-on by a drunk driver in 1993, is aiming to break Price’s

mark of 31:46 on May 5. The Hatley High School graduate finished second to his mentor Price in 1996 and turned in a third place showing in 2003. “I am hoping I do pretty well,” said Mills. “Right now I am under 26 minutes.” The wheelchair competitor -- training for the 2012 Summer Paralympic Games in

London scheduled for August 29 through September 9 -- has been friends with the 2011 defending champ since he was paralyzed coming home from a friend’s home. “It’s guys like him that got me started in racing,” said Mills. “He is such a humble guy ... I couldn’t ask for a better person to teach me.” Mills would drive from Tupe-

lo to Corinth three times a week to train with Price when he first started racing. The goal was for Mills and Price, a nine-time winner of the 10K, to race together this year. Price’s schedule won’t allow it to happen this year. “The course has changed a little bit since the last time I was Please see RECORD | 2

‘Pratt Brats’ fight cancer with fun-filled day BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

The Pratt Brats are giving Relay for Life its best shot. Employees of the Pratt Family Medical Clinic are sponsoring a Relay for Life Fun Day to raise money for the American Cancer Society today from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the clinic. “We are going to have a little bit of everything,” said clinic LPN Kristy Yarbrough. There will be live music and plenty of games during the carnival-festival setting on the north side of the clinic. Hamburger and hot dog plates, which includes baked beans, slaw, chips, dessert and drink, will be available for $7 and $5, respectively. A bake sale with all kinds of cakes, pies, cookies and cupcakes are also slated for the fun day. “We see so many patients who have cancer, we decided

we really needed to get involved with Relay for Life,” said Yarbrough of the first-year team. Faith, Hope and Love Tshirts designed by Yarbrough will be sold for $10. A wooden cross and a three table top vase fountain are two of the items in the team’s silent auction. Raffle tickets on a rocker and quilt to be given away on Relay night will also be sold today. “There is going to be all kinds of kid stuff for the games,” said the LPN. “It’s going to be a jampacked day of fun.” Yarbrough says the clinic is also trying to get a dunking booth and mechanic bull lined up for today. “This week the excitement of being involved has snowballed,” she said. “Everyone has really been excited about the day.” All proceeds from the event will go to Relay for Life and its fight against cancer.
