Man of murdered family finds and shares forgiveness

Water line accident

Work on a drainage project in the Alcorn Drive area Friday morning resulted in a severed water line. Gas & Water Department Manager John Rhodes said it took about 90 minutes to make repairs. Some water customers on Alcorn Drive and U.S. 72 had a brief service outage as a result of the accident, including some nearby medical facilities. Traffic also had to be rerouted.

Terry Caffey had everything taken away from him on March 1, 2008. His wife and two sons were murdered with Caffey shot five times and left for dead that early morning in Alba, Texas. The story took another tragic turn when investigators determined the triple murders were orchestrated by Caffey’s own daughter. “His story is one of forgiveness,” said Tate Baptist Church pastor Brother Mickey Trammel. “Those who are harboring hatred in their heart need to hear what he says.” Caffey has since remarried and is father to a pair of stepsons. His message is how he came to forgive his daughter and three others charged with the brutal crime. He is slated

to speak at Tate Baptist at 10:45 a.m. Sunday. Caffey — whose book “Terror by Night” details that night of crime — uses his Across America Ministries to visit churches and schools around the country, encouraging youth to take a stand for Christ. He encourages them to commit by taking a stand to be different by not following the crowd; saying no to drugs, alcohol and saving themselves for marriage; obeying their parents; and staying in school and getting a good education. “His story was in the national news for some time,” added Trammel. “His daughter got hooked up with the wrong crowd and had her boyfriend and his friend try to kill the whole family then burn the house.” Around 3 a.m. on March 1, Please see CAFFEY | 2

Wheelchair competitor ready to break 10K record BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

Michael Mills has won the Corinth Coca-Classic 10K. The Amory native is now coming back to Mississippi for a record. Mills, the 2006 winner in the wheelchair division, is shooting to break the record-time of friend Doug Price in the 31st running of the event.

“I lived in Mississippi most of my life and have done the Corinth 10K three or four times,” said the Social Security Administration employee in Covington, Ga. “I couldn’t pick a better place to come back home and race than Corinth.” Mills, paralyzed from the waist down after his car got hit head-on by a drunk driver in 1993, is aiming to break Price’s

mark of 31:46 on May 5. The Hatley High School graduate finished second to his mentor Price in 1996 and turned in a third place showing in 2003. “I am hoping I do pretty well,” said Mills. “Right now I am under 26 minutes.” The wheelchair competitor -- training for the 2012 Summer Paralympic Games in

London scheduled for August 29 through September 9 -- has been friends with the 2011 defending champ since he was paralyzed coming home from a friend’s home. “It’s guys like him that got me started in racing,” said Mills. “He is such a humble guy ... I couldn’t ask for a better person to teach me.” Mills would drive from Tupe-

lo to Corinth three times a week to train with Price when he first started racing. The goal was for Mills and Price, a nine-time winner of the 10K, to race together this year. Price’s schedule won’t allow it to happen this year. “The course has changed a little bit since the last time I was Please see RECORD | 2

‘Pratt Brats’ fight cancer with fun-filled day BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

The Pratt Brats are giving Relay for Life its best shot. Employees of the Pratt Family Medical Clinic are sponsoring a Relay for Life Fun Day to raise money for the American Cancer Society today from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the clinic. “We are going to have a little bit of everything,” said clinic LPN Kristy Yarbrough. There will be live music and plenty of games during the carnival-festival setting on the north side of the clinic. Hamburger and hot dog plates, which includes baked beans, slaw, chips, dessert and drink, will be available for $7 and $5, respectively. A bake sale with all kinds of cakes, pies, cookies and cupcakes are also slated for the fun day. “We see so many patients who have cancer, we decided

we really needed to get involved with Relay for Life,” said Yarbrough of the first-year team. Faith, Hope and Love Tshirts designed by Yarbrough will be sold for $10. A wooden cross and a three table top vase fountain are two of the items in the team’s silent auction. Raffle tickets on a rocker and quilt to be given away on Relay night will also be sold today. “There is going to be all kinds of kid stuff for the games,” said the LPN. “It’s going to be a jampacked day of fun.” Yarbrough says the clinic is also trying to get a dunking booth and mechanic bull lined up for today. “This week the excitement of being involved has snowballed,” she said. “Everyone has really been excited about the day.” All proceeds from the event will go to Relay for Life and its fight against cancer.

The racer has set a goal of finishing at 28 minutes on the first weekend in May. Should he reach his mark, it would best Price’s

record by over three minutes. “If I do set the record the first thing I am going to do is send him a message saying ‘I told you I

Erin Caffey, the 16 yearold daughter of Terry and Penny Caffey, had her boyfriend and his accomplice shoot her parents. The Caffey’s two sons, Matthew and Tyler, were also killed when they came from their rooms after hearing shots. Terry Caffey, shot several times, managed to crawl 400 yards from his burning home to a neighbor’s house for help. Charlie James “Charlie” Wilkinson, Charles Allan Waid, Bobbie Gale Johnson and Erin Caffey were all charged in the crime. Investigators determined that Erin Caffey had been planning the crime after her parents made her breakup with Wilkin-

son. Wilkinson and Waid were each sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Johnson and Erin Caffey both pleaded guilty to murder. Johnson was sentenced to two 40-year concurrent sentences, and Erin was given two consecutive life sentences, plus 25 years. Johnson will be eligible for parole in 22 years. Erin will not be eligible until she serves roughly 40 years of her sentence. “This will be a big service for us,” said Trammel. “I hope people who have hatred in their heart can hear Terry’s message and forgive ... they need to realize the only person they are hurting is themselves if they don’t have forgiveness.”

Letter to the editor

Other factors ignored in liquor sales debate To the editor: I am always amazed at the reasoning people put forward to try and justify making liquor more available. In Wednesday’s Daily Corinthian, it was stated that in wet counties versus dry counties there is higher graduation rates from high school, higher median income, lower divorce rates and lower DUI rates. This is like global warming believers saying if there are more hurricanes than usual or fewer hurricanes than usual, it is the result of global warming. There are obviously other factors being ignored. Liquor is one of very few products in the world where proponents argue that making it more available will result in lower consumption. If such were the case, they would not be pushing to make it more available. James Eley N. Fillmore St., Corinth

Eating contest promoting obesity? I was disappointed to see that the Corinth Area Convention and Visitors Bureau is contributing $7,000 to Main Street Corinth to promote and help sponsor a professional eating contest during the Slugburger Festival this year. This seems to fly in the face of all the efforts to teach healthy eating habits and reduce the obesity problem we face in Mississippi. Ann White Corinth

Among the GOP victories in 2010, none was sweeter than that of Marco Rubio. The charismatic young Cuban-American challenged Gov. Charlie Crist in a Senate primary, ran him out of the party and swept to victory by 19 points in a three-way race. A m o n g those mentioned as running mates for Mitt Pat Romney, it Buchanan is Rubio who generates the Columnist most excitement. That he is young, Hispanic and conservative, and his place on the ticket might secure Florida, are the cards he brings to the table. So it was a surprise this week to see Rubio being chaperoned over to the Brookings Institution by Sen. Joe Lieberman to take final vows as the newest neoconservative. John Quincy Adams' declaration that America goes not “abroad in search of monsters to destroy,” says Rubio, is an idea that he rejects. A wiser guide, said the senator, is Bob Kagan, Barack Obama's favorite neocon, who calls it a myth that America is in decline and who urges a more robust and interventionist foreign policy. Rubio says that on arrival in the Senate, he was astonished to find conservative

colleagues advocating “withdrawal from Afghanistan and staying out of Libya.” “Today in the U.S. Senate, on foreign policy, if you go far enough to the right, you wind up on the left,” Rubio joked. But is it leftist for senators, after 10 years of fighting two wars, with 6,500 dead, 40,000 wounded, $2 trillion sunk and a harvest of hatred reaped, to think that perhaps it may not have been wise to plunge into Mesopotamia and the Hindu Kush? “I always start,” said Rubio, “by reminding people that what happens all over the world is our business. ... The security of our cities is connected to the security of small hamlets in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia.” This is not a bold new idea. It is an old cliche. We must fight them over there so we do not have to fight them over here. But it misses a fundamental point. They are over here because we are over there. Osama bin Laden declared war on us because U.S. troops were sitting on the same sacred soil as Mecca and Medina, in his country, Saudi Arabia. Like most neocons, Rubio is fixated on Iran. “The goal of preventing a dominant Iran is so important that every regional policy we adopt should be crafted with that overriding goal in mind. ... We should also be preparing our allies, and the world, for the reality that

... if all else fails, preventing a nuclear Iran may require a military solution.” But as Iran's neighbor Turkey is more powerful, and there are 300 million Arabs to 75 million Iranians, and one-third of all Iranians are Azeri, Baluch, Arab and Kurd, why is this our problem? We may have to deal militarily with Syria, too, says Rubio. With Turkey and the Arab League, we should “create a safe haven” for the opposition to Bashar Assad and consider equipping it with weapons. But if we have survived Bashar and were allied with his more ruthless father during Desert Storm, why is his departure vital? Oddly for a man under consideration for vice president, Rubio is positively insulting to Vladimir Putin, who will be leading the world's largest nation and second-largest nuclear power for the next six years. “Putin might talk tough,” says Rubio, “but he knows he is weak. Everywhere he looks, he sees threats to his rule, real and imagined. And so he uses state-owned media to preach paranoia and anti-Western sentiments to Russians.” We should ignore him, says Rubio, and move ahead with “the continued enlargement of NATO.” Now, as NATO already encompasses Poland and the Baltic states, what additional nations would Rubio bring in under our nuclear umbrella?

It is the George W. Bush idea of bringing Ukraine and Georgia into NATO, which would commit us to war with Russia over who owns the Crimean Peninsula and who is sovereign in Abkhazia and South Ossetia. What vital U.S. interest is wrapped up in these regions that most Americans could not find on a map? Absolutely none. All belonged to the old Soviet Union. Not even the toughest U.S. Cold War presidents dreamed of going to war over them. “Faced with historic deficits and a dangerous national debt, there has been increasing talk of reducing our foreign aid budget,” says Rubio. Yes, and some of that talk has come from Mitt. But Rubio is having none of it. “Foreign aid is a very cost-effective way not only to export our values, but to advance our security and economic interests.” Yet, with $5 trillion in deficits in one Obama term and a national debt larger than our gross national product, does it make sense to borrow tens of billions annually from China to send to Third World regimes that vote against us and with China in the United Nations? Is Marco Rubio tomorrow's man. Or is he just an echo of yesterday? (Patrick J. Buchanan is the author of “Suicide of a Superpower: Will America Survive to 2025?”)

Rich guys proud of their honest accomplishments Mitt Romney says he will not apologize for being a rich guy who lives large and can buy whatever he wants by writing checks from his offshore bank account in the Caymans. The former governor of Massachusetts believes that what he and his father before him Bill accomplished O’Reilly — that is, rakThe O’Reilly ing in the big Factor bucks — is to be celebrated. Perhaps Romney's campaign slogan should be: “I'm rich. Deal with it.” As a rich guy myself, I completely understand Romney's mindset. Somehow I have managed to become a 1 percenter, and while I don't care very much about material wealth, I am proud that I made my money honestly through hard work.

When I graduated from Boston University in 1975, I was broke. I had to borrow money to travel to Scranton, Pa., for my first job in television. Over the years, I sacrificed much to become a proficient TV news guy, and I also took some big risks. That has paid off. Class envy is a fact of life everywhere. That's what drives socialism and communism. Why should one human being have more than another? That is a divisive moral question that is certainly relevant in this year's presidential election. Barack Obama apparently believes that the fix is in as far as American capitalism is concerned. The president thinks his Republican opposition wants to help greed heads at the expense of working folks. That is what Obama is putting out there. Maybe his slogan should be: “Greed is good.

Just ask Mitt Romney.” According to the polls, most Americans believe the wealthy should pay more in taxes, and I don't disagree. The United States must bring down the record-breaking $16 trillion debt, and this 1 percenter is ready to help out. But, like any reasonable investor, I want to see exactly where my money is going. So far, President Obama has not told me that. Here is a partial list of things I do not want my tax money going toward: n Vegas junkets featuring hot tubs and $4 shrimp appetizers for federal bureaucrats. ■ Seed money for the president's environmental friends and donors. ■ The Chevy Volt. ■ A swanky condo in London for corrupt Afghan President Hamid Karzai. ■ Hillary Clinton's hairdresser. ther did not succeed in building wealth. He was a spaghetti-and-clam-sauce guy who counted every penny. In his entire life, my dad never bought a new car or a big-screen TV. But I do believe my late father would be proud of my success and would not be supporting the class warfare tone that Obama has embraced. William O'Reilly Sr. had no use for the swells; he openly mocked material showoffs. But he admired honest accomplishment, and I believe he would look Romney in the eye and tell him he has nothing for which to apologize. But he'd also tell the governor to go easy on the Cadillacs. Company wins asbestos lawsuit JACKSON — An asbestos lawsuit that once resulted in a $322 million verdict for a Mississippi man has turned in favor of the company he sued. Thomas Brown’s lawyers had called the verdict last year the largest asbestos award for a single plaintiff in U.S. history. But it wasn’t long before the Mississippi Supreme Court removed the judge in the case for allegedly not disclosing his parents had been involved in similar asbestos litigation. A specially-appointed judge, William Coleman,

threw out the verdict and ordered another trial. The lawsuit was moved to Jones County, where a jury on Wednesday ruled in favor of Union Carbide Corp. Brown, of Brookhaven, claimed he inhaled asbestos dust while mixing drilling mud manufactured by Union Carbide. He said he was required to take oxygen 24-hours a day. “Eight experts, including an independent medical examiner, testified at trial that Mr. Brown, like many plaintiffs who have asserted similar asbestos allegations, did not have an asbestos-related disease caused by UCC,” company spokeswoman Promotional prices start at just

Budget negotiators close to final product JACKSON — Negotiators at the Mississippi Capitol said Friday that they were close to agreeing on a $5.6 billion state budget for the year that begins July 1. House and Senate leaders were trying to work out some final details, and they were hoping to file final budget proposals by Friday evening. That would be a full day ahead of the Saturday evening deadline to file the final version of 104 budget bills, covering everything from edu-

cation to public health to prisons. “At this point, we’re cleaning up some small items,” said Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Buck Clarke, R-Hollandale. “It’s amazing. Every hour, something new pops up.” The full 122-member House and 52-member Senate could spend most of Saturday considering budget bills. “I think on the appropriations side, we’re going to be ready to rock ‘n’ roll in the morning,” House Speaker Philip Gunn, RClinton, said Friday. Negotiators said spending for elementary and secondary schools will be slightly higher in

Alleged racial remark may bring review JACKSON — U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson has asked for a federal investigation of alleged racially charged comments attributed to a white Mississippi youth court prosecutor. Thompson, a Mississippi Democrat, asked Attorney General Eric Holder in a letter Thursday to investigate com-

ments attributed to Jay Gore, longtime youth court prosecutor for the city of Grenada in northwest Mississippi. Grenada Police Officer Stephen Chism, who is black, said in an affidavit that before a hearing last Monday for a black teenager, he heard Gore ask a counselor: “should we just get a rope and hang him? If we can’t hang him nor shoot him what else can we do with him?” Gore said in a statement Friday that he disputes the remarks attributed to him. He said his words have been mischaracterized and taken out of context after Chism overheard a private conversation.

Boring meets Dull in partnership Associated Press

PORTLAND, Ore. — Boring: Meet Dull. That’s what happened when two small towns, one in the U.S. state of Oregon and the other in Scotland, decided to get together and become sis-

ter communities. The Oregonian reports that the idea came from a Scottish tourist, Elizabeth Leighton, who traveled this year through the Oregon town in Clackamas County that was named after homesteader Wil-

liam H. Boring. The unofficial partnership means that the towns can use their collectively descriptive names to promote tourism. Officials in the Oregon town plan to sell T-shirts that say “Boring and Dull.”

House OKs student loan bill Associated Press

WASHINGTON — Republicans defied a veto threat and the House voted Friday to prevent federal loan costs from doubling for millions of college students. The vote gave the GOP a momentary election-year triumph on a bill that has become enmeshed in partisan battles over the economy, women’s issues and President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul. The measure’s 215-195 passage was largely symbolic because the package is

going nowhere in the Democratic-dominated Senate. Both parties agree students’ interest costs should not rise, but they are clashing along a familiar fault line over how to cover the $5.9 billion tab: Republicans want spending cuts and Democrats want higher revenues. Friday’s vote underscored how with Election Day just over six months away, much of Congress’ work and passion can be aimed as much at political positioning as it is at writing

law. Both parties want to show they are trying to help college students and their families cope in today’s unforgiving economy and, when possible, force their opponents to cast votes that might create fodder for TV attack ads. The GOP bill would keep interest rates for subsidized Stafford loans at 3.4 percent for another year, rather than automatically growing to 6.8 percent on July 1 as they would under a law enacted five years ago by a Democratic Congress.

Young son’s uncontrolled anger endangers himself and his dog DEAR ABBY: I have a beautiful wife, a dog and an 8-year-old son I love to watch sports with. My son loves sports, but he has trouble accepting a loss. He'll take out his disappointment by beating the dog. My wife doesn't Abigail want to Van Buren get rid of “Patches” Dear Abby because she has had him since college. I don't want to put my son through counseling because he said he'll hate me forever if I do. I'm afraid if the problem isn't controlled, my son's life goals may be affected. What can I do? — GOOD DAD IN CLEVELAND DEAR “GOOD DAD”: Stop trying so hard to be your son's sports buddy, and try harder to be a parent. At his age, he should be able to handle disappointment and control his anger and aggression. Do not wait another day to get him the counseling he needs! Children who hurt animals often go on to hurt other children. Your son should be evaluated by a mental health profes-

sional ASAP. By getting him the help he needs, you could be saving not one but two lives -- his and Patches'. DEAR ABBY: My mother and I were discussing the subject of egg donation -- something we're both in favor of. I told her I have been considering donating my eggs because I don't plan to have children. Mom simply stared at me in shock. Now when we talk, she casually brings up how she loves baby-sitting my young cousins and my niece. I have never particularly liked children. In fact, I prefer to live by myself. I know my mother has always wanted a lot of grandchildren, but being a wife and mother is not a goal of mine like it was hers. I almost feel guilty about my decision. How do I explain this without upsetting her further? —CHILDLESS BY CHOICE DEAR CHILDLESS: Whether to have children is a personal choice. It should not be dictated because a parent “wants lots of grandchildren.” Children deserve to be wanted. And women who do not particularly want to be mothers usually make less-than-terrific ones.

If your mother raises the subject, answer her honestly, but don't apologize for your feelings. And, when she mentions how much she enjoyed babysitting your cousins and niece, smile, nod and say, “That's nice!” DEAR ABBY: My cousin “Linda” loves her cats. Last year one of them, “Wookie,” got very sick and she had to take him to the animal hospital. She sent a mass text message to all our family members indicating she would be unable to afford Christmas gifts because she had to pay a couple of thousand dollars on Wookie's vet bills. She continues to send updates on his health and treatment. Last week, I received an email from Linda about a website she has established soliciting donations to cover her cat's medical expenses. Every day since then I have received a text or email from her or her mother asking me to donate and to tell my friends as well. I'm sorry Linda's cat is dying, but I don't feel comfortable soliciting friends to donate money for a cat who will not get better. Besides, they don't even know Linda or Wookie. How do I politely ask her to stop bombarding me with these requests? (I think what she's doing is a little tacky.) — CAT GOT MY TONGUE DEAR CAT GOT YOUR TONGUE: Don't ask. Your cousin is trying desperately to save the pet she loves, and it would hurt her already sensitive feelings. Send her a donation for Wookie, about the same amount you would spend on a Christmas gift for her. And when you see her request for soliciting your friends, hit “delete” and let it go. presidentia presidential election, he says. For the strategy to work, you need to find a safe alter alternative that offers a better yield while you’re out o of stocks. For one, switching to 30-day Treasury bills has been shown to pay off only some of the time. Then there’s that tricky word — average. Money manager Ken Fisher, CEO of Fisher Investm Investments, says the strategy is “garbage becaus because stocks tend to rise and fall far beyon beyond any averages, and so the numbers have little predictive power. Plus, he says, slicin slicing up the year differently yields “winning strategies that are equally compelling, and misleading. For instance, the S&P 500 has gained aan average 7.2 percent in March through August versus 4.4 percent in September throu through February. That raises the question, why not “Sell in September and go away. The answer: It doesn’t rhyme.

General Motors’ 1Q GM set the bar pretty high last year when it posted the biggest annual proďŹ t in its history. Something to keep in mind on Thursday when the automaker reports its results for the ďŹ rst three months of this year. GM’s sales trends were mixed during the quarter, falling in January, but rising in February and March. Still, GM is expected to report a higher proďŹ t for the quarter.

Lady Warriors open with win BY H. LEE SMITH II lsmith@dailycorinthian.com

ECRU — The Corinth Lady Warriors picked up where they left off in the regular season. After enduring an eight-day layoff following a first-round bye, Corinth jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bestof-three series with a 7-1 win at North Pontotoc on Friday in the Mississippi High School Activities Association’s Fast-Pitch Softball Playoffs. The second-round series will conclude today at the Sportsplex. Game Two is set for a noon start, with the if necessary contest following. Corinth (20-9) entered the postseason on a seven-game winning streak. The Lady Warriors have now won 19 of 22 after starting the season 1-6. The Division 1-4A champions added to a precarious 1-0 lead by hanging a four-spot in the sixth. Corinth got half of its eight hits in the frame, including a two-out, three-run triple by Bailee Kramer. Corinth pushed the advantage to 7-0 by tallying a pair of runs in the seventh. After winning pitcher Stennett Smith (14-6) reached on an error, CHS put together three consecutive singles, including run-scoring knocks by Portia Patterson and Erin Frazier. North Pontotoc (22-8) spoiled the shutout with a run in its final at-bat. Frazier led the Corinth attack with three hits. Smith and Kramer each had three-baggers while Patterson, Jamia Kirk and Haley Christian contributed singles.

AC pulls off second series sweep BY H. LEE SMITH II lsmith@dailycorinthian.com

GLEN — Alcorn Central continued its second-half surge. The Golden Bears, who had to fight to even get into the Mississippi Activities Association’s Baseball Playoffs, moved into the North semifinals with their second straight series sweep. Central (13-19) used a fourrun sixth to dispatch of Division 2 champion Mooreville 7-3 on Friday. The Bears

opened the series with a 2-0 win on Thursday behind Jeremy Powers no-hit, 16-strikeout performance. AC, which began the season 1-11, will face fellow Division 1-3A member Belmont next week. The Cardinals swept Independence in their secondround matchup. “We’re playing pretty good right now,” said AC Head Coach Jeff Wood. “We’ve been getting good pitching and we hit the ball really well in two innings (Friday).”

Tyler Moore settled down after a rocky start to even his record at 1-1. The freshman allowed just three hits -- one after the first -- and three runs while striking out six in six innings of work. “Tyler settled down and did a great job,” said Wood. “They had the bases loaded with no outs and he walked off the mound allowing just one run.” Central quickly erased the disadvantage with three runs in its first at-bat. A Trae Bain double -- one of five Central

hits in the inning -- a sac fly by Powers and a wild pitch gave Central a 3-1 lead. Mooreville tied the game in the third and it remained a 3-3 contest heading to the bottom of the sixth, where Central tallied four runs. Hunter Bronson started the rally with a double off the wall. He’d later score on a sac fly by Chandler Young, leaving the bases empty with two outs. Please see ALCORN | 11

KOSSUTH — Steve Lyles will return to his former stomping grounds with a game in hand. Kossuth jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series with South Pontotoc, downing the Lady Cougars 4-2 on Friday in the Mississippi High School Activities Association’s Fast-Pitch Softball Playoffs. Lyles spent the middle por-

tion of his now 25-plus year career at South Pontotoc. The series will conclude at the home of the Division 3 champions today. Game Two is set for a 2 p.m. start with the if necessary game to follow. Kossuth (18-12) broke a 2-2 tie with a pair of runs in the fourth. Back-to-back two-out, run-scoring singles by Paden Tomlin and Shelby Stewart put the Lady Aggies ahead to stay. Carleigh Mills (9-6) threw

up zeroes the final four innings after surrendering a pair of runs in the third. She allowed just four hits while striking out two in a complete-game effort. Kossuth jumped out to a 1-0 lead in its first at-bat of the night. South Pontotoc took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third but Kossuth evened things in its half of the inning. Mills aided her cause with a game-high three hits.

Stewart chipped in a pair of singles, with Dana Glissen, Madison Hales and Tomlin also contributing to an eighthit attack.

Aggies explode, force deciding Game Three BY H. LEE SMITH II lsmith@dailycorinthian.com

WATER VALLEY — The Kossuth Aggies survived behind a hitting barrage. Kossuth banged out 14 hits in just five innings and

evened its series with Water Valley behind a 14-2 spanking Friday in the Mississippi High School Activities Association’s Baseball Playoffs. The Aggies (19-6) will host the deciding game today at 3 p.m. The winner will advance

to the North semifinals. Water Valley claimed a 3-0 win in the series opener on Thursday. The Blue Devils did all their damage in one inning while limiting Kossuth to just three hits. Kossuth scored in every in-

ning and all nine starters had hits in the run-ruled affair. David Gibson (6-1) went the distance, allowing a pair of first inning runs. The senior struck out 10 and scatPlease see AGGIES | 10

Riley Mask extended the inning by reaching on an error. Central then loaded the bases on a single by Jay Moore and a walk by Tyler Moore. Powers made it 5-3 by drawing a walk and two big insurance runs came across when Mooreville misplayed a ball of the bat of Bain. Bain led a 10-hit attack with two singles and a double. Jay Moore and Hunter Bronson had two hits each, with Tyler Moore, Dustin Sparks and Justin Sparks also getting in on the act. ■ Central rode the arm of Powers in a 2-0 series-opening win on Thursday. The senior tossed a no-hitter and sat down 16 Troopers on strikes. “He kept them off balance all night long,” said Wood. “Sixteen strikeouts -- that’s something to be said right there.” Powers (4-4) also turned in a stellar performance in a 10-0 win over Cleveland East Side in the opening round. In two playoff games the senior has tossed two shutouts, allowed just one hit and struck out 28 batters in 12 innings of work.

Horoscopes by Holiday BY HOLIDAY MATHIS The void-of-course Cancer moon makes for a hazy, emotionally unfocused morning, but the afternoon brings an excited hustle that more than makes up for the soft start. Tonight, people want to feel important under the Leo moon. You can't go wrong doling out compliments to the deserving -- and for good measure, to the undeserving. ARIES (March 21-April 19). You're a sponge for knowledge now, and you'll learn from those who have what you want. The best teacher, however, is experience. Dive in and go for the handson experience whenever possible. TAURUS (April 20May 20). When you have a plan and follow it, you'll feel productive. You might get even more accomplished by just winging it; however, you won't get the same winning feeling as you do when you follow a plan. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). You won't do things

in the expected order, but you'll get them done nonetheless. A loved one might find this puzzling or even maddening. But why should you do things like everyone else? CANCER (June 22July 22). Most people think it's important to be right, but they're wrong about that. You'll be amazed at what happens when you give up the need to be right. Your mind will quiet, and you'll be present to the moment. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Your standards of style come into play. You may like someone very much, but you won't take the relationship to the next level until you're satisfied that your styles will mesh well. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Your skills get rusty if you don't use them. You're in just the mood to freshen up your bag of tricks. Practice that thing you used to be able to do to prevent losing the skill altogether. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Writing to-do items

down on paper seems so “old school in today's high-tech world. However, it's the method that's going to make this day a great success, because it works the best to focus your mind and keep you on task. SCORPIO (Oct. 24Nov. 21). You'll spend a fair amount of time looking at the big picture. To an outsider, you appear to be a person staring into space. They can't see the magnificent wheels turning in your mind. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). You are still being too hard on yourself, expecting maximum productivity without allowing time to laugh, kick back and recuperate. Don't skip these crucial steps, as they are critical to your success. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). You have that special charisma that makes people give you their full attention. You will have a receptive audience, so take your sweet time telling a story, giving a performance or explaining what you

and is also able to attach to loved ones with a superglue type bond that makes being apart a painful process. STRESS REMEDY: Pisces relieves stress through artistic expression. Doing this with regularity ensures that Pisces becomes not only calmer and more centered, but quite masterful at whatever craft he or she chooses. CELEBRITY PROFILES: In grade school, Jay Leno was a prankster who thrilled to the sound of his classmate's laughter, and not much has changed, except that his act and his audience have grown to global proportions. Taurus celebrities are typically masterful at staying grounded even from a perch at the top of the world. Leno is known for being as down-to-earth as he is rich and famous. 3, 25, 49, 27 and 16. STRESS AND YOUR SIGN: Each sign is different when it comes to stress. What one sign considers taxing another finds exciting, and tension remedies vary from sign to sign, as well. How does your sign deal with the more unnerving aspects of life? PISCES: GOOD STRESS: Limbo Land is the place between places that many people can't bear to think about, let alone experience. The definites of “on or “off and “is or “isn't are a much more comfortable place to reside than the strange, indefinable expanses that exist in the cracks between those states. Ethereal, openminded, creative Pisces is fine with the same limbo state that sends others into a spin. Pisces may even enjoy the puzzling, mysterious nature of this land. BAD STRESS: Being separated from loved ones is what causes Pisces the most stress. This sign is sensitive

know. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20Feb. 18). Once you fully bond with someone, it's next to impossible to separate you permanently from that person. Temporary separations end in you being magnetically drawn back together. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). You feel a strong empathy with someone who is going through an intense experience. Your empathy is an expression of love that widens your perception and further opens your heart. TODAY'S BIRTHDAY (April 28). Operating in groups will be a specialty, and you'll be an integral part of a winning team this year. You'll visualize yourself succeeding and then create the same dynamic in your reality. A shift in perspective helps you find a way to make more money in June. November brings exciting visits with those you've missed. Pisces and Sagittarius people adore you. Your lucky numbers are:
