Talk heats up over student releases BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com

Alcorn County school board members took sides on Monday over a somewhat heated discussion regarding out of district student releases.

The Alcorn School District’s state funding is set to be cut more than $700,000 next year due to a decrease in average daily attendance, and Superintendent Larry B. Mitchell is blaming the district’s some-

times weak policy governing transfers. “Our daily average attendance is down and our student enrollment has decreased from previous years well over 100 kids. I think we need to begin

working to reduce the number of kids that leave our district,” said Mitchell. “There are all kinds of reasons and excuses, and I’m willing to hear them and in turn release them or not release them if the board choos-

es for me to do that.” No changes were made to the policy on Monday, even though two board members agreed there should be. Please see STUDENTS | 2A

Tishomingo County native Lynn Hester enjoys his fast-paced life as a 911 dispatcher for the Tishomingo County Sheriff’s Department. Hester was an original 911 dispatcher when the Tishomingo County office opened in 1992. “In the beginning we only had one telephone and one computer, now we have too many to even count,” he said. “A lot has changed with the type of calls we receive, also. It seems like today the calls are more intense. I really have to stay focused because at times there are multiple calls coming in at one time.” Hester has been married to Alisha for five years and they live in Midway. “When I get home, I cut off all forms of technology,” he added. “We just enjoy simple living.”

ing trails. Playground equipment from the closed East Corinth school campus will be installed in the park and near the courthouse. Participants should bring work gloves, and long pants are suggested. Equipment like hedge clippers and leaf blowers will be welcomed. The courthouse remains closed to general visitation due to ongoing interior renovation work, but participants will have the opportunity to view the inside. Whitehurst encourages participants to bring a sack lunch. “It will be a good time for people who don’t necessarily want to come to the festival to see that there is more to Jacinto,” said Whitehurst. Keep Corinth-Alcorn Beautiful and the Jacinto VFD will be involved in the event.
