9 bills authored by Parks to become law BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com
(Editors note: This is part one of a three part series featuring Crossroads area state lawmakers and the highlights from their 2016 term in the Mississippi Legislature. District 4 Senator Rita Potts Parks, District 2 Rep. Nick Bain and District 1 Rep. Lester “Bubba” Carpenter will be
featured.) For Kossuth native Rita Potts Parks, her second term as a Mississippi senator has been exciting. As June begins, she’ll settle back into her normal daily grind, but just a few weeks ago she wrapped up what she calls her busiest legislative session ever. “I’ve had a lot of fun this year,”
said Parks, who acted as chairperson of the Business and Financial Institutions standing committee, one of the state’s top Senate committees. “It has been a honor to serve as chair and a real confidence booster.” When the current legislative session ended in mid-April, the Mississippi House and Senate saw 2,758 bills pass through but only 377 of
those actually survived the 31/2 month session. For Parks, she authored 17 pieces of legislation during the session, with nine of those passing to become law on July 1. Some highlights from Parks’ session include: Please see PARKS | 2

Bryce Bearden has another wish. The Alcorn Central student, who received a trip to Hawaii last November from Make-AWish Mid-South, wants to be part of making wishes come true for other children and their families. “Bryce’s Wish Warriors” are taking the next step to turn those wishes into reality with Ride for Wishes on Saturday at American Legion Post 6. “He decided he wanted to do something like this before
his wish was granted,” said Bryce’s mother, Sara Langston. Please see WARRIORS | 5

Society. Lambert was selected first in the competition and received $200 while Cole was runner-up and claimed $100. “We were looking for a way to recognize our veterans,” said ACGS Vice President Angie Roberts of the reason for the contest. “This was a way to fill in their stories.” All essays had to written

IUKA — One of Tishomingo County’s most beloved landmarks recently got a makeover. The Little Church, a historic board-and-batten Gothicstyle Episcopal church on Eastport Street in Iuka, re-
ceived a fresh coat of paint last week. Something Frank Thomas said, was long overdue. “We began seriously looking to raise money to paint the church in 2011,” said Thomas, chairperson of Iuka Heritage, Please see CHURCH | 2

and served over 600 families through our pantry outreach,” said R.M. Brooks who initially pitched the idea to his church. “We are now in need of funds to continue this vital ministry for the next school year.” Those interested in contributing to the cause can do so in two ways, by donating items to sell or by making monetary donations. “We invite everyone to bring household items, appliances, furniture, toys and summer clothes that are in new or gently used condition,” said Brooks. “The items that we are unable to sell will be given to those in need through our pantry.”

Making a difference in a child’s life is what Hannah Jones enjoys most about being a teacher. She’s taught fifth grade at Glendale Elementary School for the last 21/2 years and will move to a second grade teaching position at Alcorn Central Elementary School in August. “I can’t wait until the new school year begins,” said the 25-year-old. “I’m looking forward to the new environment, the new building and the new kids.” Shifting to a younger grade will be a challenge, Jones admits. “To go from kids who know what to do to kids who need to be shaped and molded will be both challenging and exciting,” she said. Married to Jeremy for seven years, the couple have one daughter, six-year-old Janna.
