Community reaches out to grieving family BY L.A. STORY lastory@dailycorinthian.com

A rain of love and prayers is what has been poured out to a grieving family after a fatal wreck Monday morning. The one-vehicle accident occurred on U.S. Highway 72 during the early morning hours Monday and claimed the life of Theresa “Michelle” Dixon, 34, and caused serious injuries to

Nathaniel (“Nathan”) D. Dixon, 36, both of Corinth. Dixon is still hospitalized at Region One Health (“The Med”) in Memphis, Tenn. He is still undergoing tests to determine the extent of his injuries, but family friend DuJuana Thompson said it is reported his neck is broken in two places. The community of family, co-workers, friends and church

family has had an outpouring of support for the Dixons. Thompson said over 200 visitors have been reported up at the Memphis hospital showing support and prayers for Dixon. A prayer vigil was held Monday night at West Corinth Pentecostal Tabernacle. The vigil was attended by 30-35 people, including Corinth Mayor Tommy Irwin, several other minis-

ters and staff members from Magnolia Funeral Home. “Everybody is just devastated and grieving so deeply,” said Thompson. “People could hardly talk for crying ... and we are hurting so badly for Nathan.” Thompson said the couple had just travel to Arkansas to set up their camper for a sumPlease see DIXONS | 2A

CHS student wins prestigious Orpheum award BY L.A. STORY lastory@dailycorinthian.com

Hard work pays off. Corinth High School junior Dustin Albarracin can verify this from firsthand experience because a strong work ethic was part of how he recently won the Student Stage Management award at the Orpheum’s High School Musical and Theater Awards in Memphis, Tenn. The mission of the Orpheum’s High School Musical Theatre Awards program is to support, promote and enhance high school musical theatre throughout Memphis and the Mid-South. Modeled after the Tony Awards and now in its eighth year, the High School Musical Theatre Awards recognize achievements in all areas of high school musical theatre. Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” was the musical CHS took to the Orpheum competition and CHS

theater teacher Kelly Treadway said, that with such strong competition for the Orpheum awards, it was an honor just to have a student get a nomination. Albarracin expressed his own emotions regarding the nomination, saying, “I was really surprised. I was up against schools within 100 miles of the Orpheum and there is better funding for some of the Memphis schools. So, whatever we did, I knew they could do better.” Treadway said CHS earned three nominations all together, but Albarracin was the only win. The path to winning the Student Stage Management award included an essay Albarracin had to write about his experience, as well as creating an extensive portfolio and a video-recorded interview. There were six student stage managers nominated from the region and they were all addressed in a special message from the stage manager

of the Broadway musical “Hamilton.” The “Hamilton” stage manager had personally viewed all the nominees’ interviews. “Knowing that someone from ‘Hamilton’ had seen his interview was very exciting for Dustin,” said Treadway. Treadway said the journey to bring “The Little Mermaid” to the CHS stage was a daunting process as they were informed early that nothing could be used from previous productions. All the sets had to be constructed from scratch. “It took so much hard work from the theater and art students, parents and volunteers to create an underwater setting ... and they did it. You didn’t know you when you took the plunge, but you were there,” she said. There were people who truly dedicated themselves to the project Please see AWARD | 2A
