County’s garbage cost to increase BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

Alcorn County will pay a little more for household garbage collection in the coming year. Waste Connections is increas-

ing the per-household monthly charge from $5.98 to $6.04 with the August billing. The county will pay $7,200 more as the result of an increase of 1.6 percent.

Residents do not receive a bill for garbage collection. The county has an ad valorem tax designated for the cost of the service. The contractor began run-

ning the county routes last July. Waste Connections has the option to make a consumer price index adjustment of up to 2 percent annually on the contract anniversary date, and the

Board of Supervisors received notice of the increase on Tuesday. In other business: Please see SUPERVISORS | 5A

Board approves sign, delays action on plat BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

The Corinth Board of Aldermen took up several recommendations Tuesday evening from the board of adjustment and planning commission involving a relocating jewelry store and a couple of subdivisions. The board delayed action on the final plat for the Cannonball Ridge subdivision on Gaines Road, citing concerns about drainage and the streets. The subdivision changed hands after originally

being developed as Magnolia Lake Estates, and the new owners are anxious to move forward with building houses after investing in improvements to the property. The board may hold a special meeting to consider the plat after city officials meet onsite with the developers. After some discussion about consistency with business signs, aldermen agreed with the board of adjustment’s recommendation of approval Please see CITY | 5A

Every dollar counts when it comes to the Corinth-Alcorn Animal Shelter’s newest fundraising project. The shelter kicked off its fourth annual pet calendar photo contest fundraiser on Tuesday with hopes of raising $5,000 to help continue providing care to the thousands of

abused, neglected, abandoned and injured animals in the Crossroads area. “We’re so excited to get this fundraiser going,” said volunteer director Charlotte Doehner. “We’ve made a few changes this year that we hope will only encourage more people to submit photos and vote for their favorite.” Photos can be entered at cal-

endar.alcornpets.com. The online-based contest allows pet lovers to enter a photo of their cat, dog, horse, small mammal or bird. Each entry is $15 and includes a guarantee that the entered photo will appear somewhere in the full color, full-sized wall calendar. Please see CALENDAR | 2A

CT-A releases schedule BY KIMBERLY SHELTON kshelton@dailycorinthian.com

Jam-packed with laughter, suspense and yule-tide cheer, Corinth Theatre-Arts’ 2016-17 season will provide patrons with a variety of entertaining shows to attend. “This season, we’ve kept it lighthearted with a theme of ‘Merriment and Mirth’,” said CT-A Board Member and actress Jan Soltz. “There’s something for everyone – from singing and dancing nuns to talking animals.” “From a performers standpoint, there are roles available for those ages six to 106,” she continued. “We are hoping to bring a little laughter every couple of months. We’ve tried to provide a good balance of shows from old classics to newer fare.” The upcoming season line up is as follows:

• “Nunsense 2, The Second Coming” — The action takes place six weeks after the sisters have staged their first benefit. The sisters are back presenting a “thank you” show for all those who supported them in the past. But now, they’re a bit slicker, having been “bitten by the theatre bug.” Things off to a rousing start as the sisters sing Nunsense, the Magic Word, but before long, chaos erupts. Two Franciscans come to claim Sister Mary Amnesia (who has won the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes) as one of their own. At the same time, the nuns hear that a talent scout is in the audience to see them strut their stuff. From the riotous bingo game run by Sister Amnesia to the hilarious duet, “What would

the classics which have stood the test of time, but we will also share many wonderful and interesting stories behind these timeless songs.” Clark’s husband, Jason, and daughters, Amber Nelon Thompson and Autumn Nelon Clark are also part of the gospel group based in Atlanta. Please see NELONS | 2A

People of the Crossroads Genice Jones, Iuka Photo by Opal Lovelace

A familiar face behind the counter at Iuka’s Front Street Snack Bar, Genice Jones hasn’t always worked in the restaurant business. “I worked at the shoe factory for 25 years until it closed, then I was in retail and management for short time,” said Jones. “But God had other plans for me, so I went to work for my friend Sandra Hackman at the snack bar and never looked back.” A lifelong Tishomingo County resident, Jones said, “I absolutely love my job. It is a blessing to meet so many tourists visiting our town and an honor to meet so many folks who grew up in Iuka that moved away come back to visit.” She said visitors often “climb on a bar stool and reminisce about their parents bringing them in as a child for a slugburger.” Married to Lester for 41 years, the couple have one daughter and three grandchildren.
