Local talents are ready to slug it out. Slug Idol and Junior Slug Idol kicks off the 29th Annual Slugburger Festival & World Slugburger Eating Championship on Thursday night at 6. “It’s a great opportunity for our local talent to showcase their ability on the big stage,” said Main Street Corinth Director Brent Johnson. “Our entire region will be well represented.” Six competitors are expected to battle in the Junior Slug Idol division with another three in the Slug Idol event. “Slug Idol is one of my favorite events,” said Johnson. “For a lot of the contestants this is a dream come true and it’s always a fun event.” The contest – sponsored by Garrett Eye Clinic for a fifth year – is ending after this year, according to Johnson. “We are going to try something new next year in its place,” said Johnson. “We are going to cap a great competition this week and determine later what will fill its spot.” Admission to the popular festival is $5 on Thursday, $7 on Friday and $10 on Saturday. Mississippi Queen – a country rock band based out of northeast Mississippi – is slated to hit the stage following Slug Idol. “Their lead singer (Amy Hollon) is a former Slug Idol winner,” added Johnson. BY STEVE BEAVERS ACE Power wants to pull the plug on scam artists. The power association has received several calls from members about a scam involving an agent with the company. “The most recent scam involves the scam artist – who represents him/herself as an agent of ACE Power – calling commercial members to let them know they owe ACE varying amounts of money in order to prevent the disconnection of electric service,” said ACE Assistant Office Manager Sean McGrath. Customers are told they can make payment with either a debit card or a prepaid debit card, according to McGrath. “The scam is similar to the IRS scam which was done a few months ago,” said McGrath. “There has been a rise in scammers targeting rural areas served by a sole electric power distributor.” Scam artists use phone numbers listed in the Yellow Pages. “Members have also reported scammers are saying the bank has reversed their payment and they must make a new payment right now in order to avoid disconnection,” added McGrath. “The preferred method of payment used by scammers is a Green Dot Visa card.” ACE recommends customers use these tips to avoid a telePlease see SCAM | 6

TUPELO — Encouraging all eligible donors to roll up their sleeves and summon their inner hero, United Blood Services has issued an emergency public appeal for donors of all blood types. The appeal was made following the plummeting of blood donations since the Memorial Day holiday. “The Fourth of July holiday has since worsened the severity of low blood inventory levels,” said UBS Senior Donor Recruiter Rhonda Weaver. “As the community blood provider for this area and stewards of the community blood supply, maintaining an adequate supply of all blood types is imperative.” “Our reserves of blood are now depleted to a less than one day supply on our shelves,” she continued. “Since it takes 24 to 36 hours to test and process each donation before it can be released for a patient, blood is being transfused as fast as we can provide it to hospitals.” Please see BLOOD | 6

Corinth native Chad Dickerson has three passions in life — music, singing and the business he owns in Corinth. The 44-year-old son of Michael and Susan Dickerson is known for his voice and is invited to sing at many community events throughout the year. Dickerson has been active with the business since it started 13 years ago when it opened on July 5. “I love what I do,” he said. Outside of 10 years he lived in Nashville, Tenn., Dickerson has spent the rest of his life in Corinth.
