Supervisors hear budget requests BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

The Alcorn County Board of Supervisors received its first round of budget requests Monday as local governments begin to plan for the upcoming fiscal year. The county and city have until Sept. 15 to adopt a budget for

the new fiscal year beginning Oct. 1. Tax Collector Larry Ross talked about several factors that will increase his budget for FY 2016, including a halfcent postage increase, new fees the office will have to pay for the preparation of notices for mailing, pay increases for the

office’s hourly wage employees, an increase in association dues and an increase in duplication and reproduction costs. Changes being made by the Mississippi Department of Revenue will result in a number of pre-printed forms no longer being available. As the collector’s office takes on the printing,

the duplication budget is proposed to increase from $650 to $2,000. He is also asking for some fee revenue to move from the general fund to the tax collector’s budget in accordance with state law. “That law states that the 50 cents per car tag that we collect

be used for the upkeep of the computer system in the tax collector’s office that has anything to do with registration and titling of a vehicle,” said Ross. “In the past, we have used that money in the general fund to support the county’s computer Please see BUDGET | 2A

3 bids submitted for cemetery land BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

Three parties submitted bids for the purchase of Forrest Memorial Park cemetery. Chancery Clerk Bobby Marolt unsealed the bids Tuesday afternoon in the courtroom of the Chancery Building as several interested parties, including representatives of the Secretary of State’s Office, observed. Monday was the deadline for bids to be submitted. The bids are: ■ Thomas D. Fowlkes of Oxford — $128,750 ■ Allen Keith Knight of Oxford — $53,750 ■ Jeff Rencher of Corinth — $2,510 Marolt said the bids will be taken under consideration by a chancery judge and the Secretary of State’s Office. The cemetery includes 12.5

acres of land on Highway 45 south of Corinth. The sale includes real property only and does not include the contractual obligations of the former owners. It is the third time since being placed in receivership that the cemetery has been on the market. Prior attempts to sell it were stalled by the lienholder’s attempts to stop the public sales. An investigation by the Secretary of State’s Office in 2011 found the cemetery’s pre-need trust accounts were depleted by $473,521 by former owner Wayne Hight, who pleaded guilty in 2013 to misappropriating pre-need burial funds at Forrest Memorial Park and Booneville’s Oaklawn Memorial Park. He served a year in custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections.

Singer-songwriter Cory Smith will headline Saturday night’s entertainment at the 28th Annual Slugburger Festival at the Corinth Depot.

Entertainers making local debuts BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com

At first, Cory Smith wasn’t sure he wanted to try a slugburger. The singer-songwriter will make his debut in Corinth on Saturday night headlining the 28th Annual Slugburger Festival, and trying the southern delicacy is a must for all performers prior to show time. “What exactly is a slugburger,” he asked during a phone interview from his Jefferson, Georgia home. “It really doesn’t sound that good, but it must be since there’s a festival surrounding it,” he laughed. Once he learned the origin of the burger’s name and realized no slimy snails are harmed in

the making of a slugburger, he was game, “I’m definitely going to try one now,” he added. Likened to the sound of Jason Mraz, Jack Johnson, Darius Rucker and the Zac Brown Band, Smith guarantees a good

show. Known mostly for his smooth country vocals and funky folk sound, the Georgia native plans to perform several new songs from his new album, “While The Gettin’ Is Good,” at the Historic Depot this weekend. His set will also include fan favorites, and maybe even a cover or two. Although the former high school teacher has toured all over the country, he is quite fond of North Mississippi. “When I first started touring, Mississippi was like my second home,” he said. “Oxford and Starkville treated me like family. The crowds were always great at the shows I did in Please see FESTIVAL | 2A

CHS football clinic set for women, girls BY KIMBERLY SHELTON kshelton@dailycorinthian.com

Attendees will spend a day in the life of a Corinth High School football player as Magnolia Regional Health Center and the Corinth School District Foundation hosts “Ladies of the Gridiron.” Slated for Saturday, July 25, the public women’s football clinic will be held from 9 a.m. until noon in the Corinth High School field house. “Girls and women ages 10 and older are invited to spend the morning with the CHS

coaching staff, a few of their wives and some of the players,” said Corinth School District Data and Marketing Manager Taylor Coombs. “So mothers, grandmothers, girls and ladies come one, come all to this great day of football.” The idea for the clinic came about as Coombs found herself reminiscing about the “Ladies Football Forum” from her Ole Miss days. “I remember how popular it was when I was going to Please see FOOTBALL | 2A
