13 vie for Slugburger eating title BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com
Major League Eaters from across the country will converge on the Slugburger capital of the world this weekend. They will be in Corinth for the 4th Annual World Slugburger Eating Championship set for 4:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Historic Depot and C.A.R.E. Garden. The top ranked eater in the world, Joey “Jaws” Chestnut from San Jose, California, will return to the Crossroads this year in hopes of reclaiming the slug world title. Chestnut was narrowly beaten in the 2014 contest by Matt Stonie, who downed 42 slugburgers in 10 minutes. Stonie also recently upset Chestnutt at the July Fourth Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Championship in Coney Island, New York. “The greatest eaters in the world will travel to this corner of heaven in north-eastern
Mississippi to challenge themselves — and each other — by eating one of the most demanding foods on the circuit,” said MLE emcee Sam Barclay. “In this discipline, jaw strength and capacity are put to the ultimate test.” Three locals are registered to compete. Jeff Stark of Corinth will join former Main Street Corinth director Taylor Coombs and firsttime competitor and new Main Street director Brent Johnson. “I have never claimed to be a professional eater and I’m certainly not looking for a career change,” laughed Johnson on Thursday. “I have a personal goal of four slugburgers during the contest.” Johnson said he is looking forward to the friendly rivalry between he and Coombs. “Apparently it’s tradition for the festival chairman to take Please see EATERS | 2A
