Joey “Jaws” Chestnut has figured out how to eat slugburgers. Major League Eating’s top ranked eater downed 41 slugburgers to claim his second consecutive World Slugburger Eating Championship. Chestnut’s 41 fell two short of the world record set by Matt “Megatoad” Stonie in 2014 and was nine more than runner-up Geoffrey Esper’s 32 on Saturday in downtown Corinth. The 5th annual eating contest got under way about 30 minutes later than scheduled while the musical entertainment went through a final sound check. Chestnut got off to a hot start and was on a world-record pace midway through the 10-minute competition. Major League Eating’s top Please see SLUGBURGER | 2A

Schools face challenge under new state rating system BY BRANT SAPPINGTON bsappington@dailycorinthian.com
Earning a top state rating is about to get significantly harder for schools in the Magnolia State. The Mississippi Department of Education is prepar-
ing to release the first school rankings under the newest version of the state’s accountability model within the next few weeks and school districts across the state are expected to see lower rankings even as student performance continues to
School gets new leader BY JEFF YORK For the Daily Corinthian
MICHIE, Tenn. — An excited young man will soon take the reins as the new principal at Michie School. Dr. Matt Alred was hired Wednesday to assume the position at the school beginning Monday. Alred, 36, spent the past three years as the principal at the Tishomingo County Alternative School. He has spent 13 years in education, including stops in different roles at Ole Miss and Mississippi State. “We are extremely fortunate to get a man like Dr. Alred to be a principal in our district and at Michie,” said McNairy County Director of Schools Wayne Henry. “He has experience at a lot of different levels. He is going to be a positive for Michie School and we wanted to get the best principal for the
school.” Alred and his wife Amy recently purchased a farm in Acton and found out about the job opening Alred through someone in the Michie area. They enjoy riding horses and believe the farm would be the best place to begin rearing a family. He was not a part of the first round of interviews when Henry hired John Massey for the principal’s job. “I’m impressed with the support of the school in Michie,” said Alred. “I look forward to working with all the teachers, students and parents.” His wife Amy is an instruc-

It becomes a family around here as several of our campers stay for eight months at a time,” said 68 -year- old Joyce Barnes. “Running the place is a lot of work, but it’s well worth it.” About seven years ago, Joyce and her husband, Danny, wanted to do something special for their guests. “Having the advantage of the back side of Pickwick Lake, the community as a whole volunteered to help with a Fourth of July fireworks show on the water,” said Joyce. “It’s turned into a pretty big deal and something we can really be proud of. It has grown to more than 300 boats gathered on the river to watch – it’s like a city, boats as far as the eye can see. People have told us the fireworks show is better than Disney World ... we’re just glad we can provide something like this for this amazing community.”
