Board OKs school hires for 2015-16 BY JEBB JOHNSTON

Trustees of the Corinth School District approved a number of hires in a Friday meeting in preparation for the 2015-2016 school year. The upcoming school year was the focus of much of the business, including efforts to prepare a single student handbook for the three schools, facility improvements taking place during the summer break, and the conversion to a new financial accounting system. Along with the new hires, the board of trustees approved the salary schedule for the coming school year. With one or two exceptions, Friday’s hiring “pretty well fills everything we have in the district,” said Superintendent Lee Childress. The district had a strong group of applicants this year, he said. Joining the district as project director for the Elementary and Secondary Counseling Grant Program is Chris Butler, who has been principal at Biggersville Elementary School. The district recently landed the grant of $932,698 for a three-year program aimed at improving student behavior and reducing the amount of time teachers spend on disciplinary issues at the elementary school level. Megan Anderson will join Corinth High School as a math teacher in a new position for a support class. Other hires for CHS are Please see BOARD | 2

It is known to some as the old museum building and to others as the old YMCA. Some will remember the cityowned building at 601 Washington Street as a home to both of those organizations through the years, as well as its use as the “Boy Scout hut.” Now in declining condition and considered an eyesore, its time is coming to an end as the Board of Mayor and Aldermen voted this week to demolish it. “It’s in bad shape and it’s just going to get worse,” said Mayor Tommy Irwin, who has nostalgic memories of playing quarterback on the grounds during its days as the Y. After the museum moved out in 2006, the city began to use the building for storage. Any documents that needed to be kept on file have been relocated to the old jail at City Hall.
