First Baptist will host concert series BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com
Summer is about fun and sun. First Baptist Church-Corinth is adding a little music to the equation. The church’s Summer Concert Series will see the Griffith Family performing on Sunday at 6:30 p.m.
The Griffith Family – comprised of the husband and wife team of Tony and Julie Griffith along with vocalist Amber Smith – knew since they were children they were called to the ministry. “Their schedule is taking them across the United States into churches, various concert
venues and stepping onto high profile stages,” said Jackie Huskey with First Baptist Church. “Their performance will be the second in the month-long concert series presented by First Baptist Church.” The group’s debut, self-ti-
“Working with the kids reminded me of where I used to be when I was their age, I saw a lot of ambition and drive in this group … they can make it in life as well as football.”

The Alcorn School District continues to lose students. Board members voted on Monday to release 12 children from the struggling district. This latest round of transfers comes just one month after board members granted the release of 58 students from the county school system. Much like previous months, board members were again divided on all but five of the 12. Ten-year veteran board member Mary Coleman said she voted against most of the transfers because of the reason given. “To me, ‘convenience’ is not a good reason for transfer, and it is why I voted against those,” she said. All 12 transfers received a 3-2 vote and were approved. Coleman and fellow board member Laura Studdard cast no votes. The five students all board members agreed upon gave reasons for transfer such as a parent working in another school district and student always being at other school district, according to Coleman.

Offering service with a smile, Wash Town employee Dondre Green loves being a Crossroads resident. “There’s so much history here,” he said. “I love where I’m from. It’s my home.” A 2012 graduate of Corinth High School Academic and Performing Arts Center, the 22-year-old enlisted in the U.S. Navy straight out of high school. His military career began with service aboard the USS Nimitz the 5th and 7th fleet during Operation Enduring Freedom. Stationed in Lemoore, California, at Naval Air Station Lemoore (N.A.S), Green served for four years as a culinary specialist or Navy chef as part of the VFA-154 Black Knights, which he considers to be the best squadron on base. Green is the son of Ivary and Victor Brooks and the brother of Deneaco and Chiquita Hubbard.

Among this month’s releases, there were four to Corinth, two to Booneville, one to North Tippah, two to Prentiss and two to Tishomingo. Board members agreed during a special session in June that something had to be done with to the rarely followed transfer policy. P16 chairperson Jodi Fiveash introduced four changes in an effort to tighten the policy. They would include a separate policy for pre-kindergarten students, a previously released renewal form to track the number of students residing in but no attending school in the district, the handling of each transfer as a individual
