Mr. Richard returning to library BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

Kids’ favorite Mr. Richard is bringing his show back to the Corinth Library. It’s been a couple of years since the musician and former Corinthian performed locally. He is set for 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 20, at the Corinth Library and will also perform at Booneville’s George E. Allen Library on Tuesday at 10 a.m. The free performances are part of the summer program at both branches. “He is a great performer,” said Dee Hare, assistant director for the Northeast Regional Library. “The kids and adults love his energetic performances.” He has performed at the libraries a number of times in the past. Richard Peeples moved with his family to Corinth while he was in sixth grade. He played in rock bands throughout high school and college. He later worked at Disney World, as a National Park Service ranger in Colorado and as a storyteller for the Orange County Library in Florida. With the help of another former Corinthian, Jimbo Mathus, who helmed the swing revival band Squirrel Nut Zippers in the ’90s, he recorded his first children’s album, “Might as Well Sing.” It was recognized by Parenting magazine as a “parenting pick” in 2005. Peeples plays a variety of instruments, including guitar, mandolin, ukulele and harmonica, during his lively shows. Please see PEEPLES | 2

BY JEBB JOHNSTON Legislation is advancing in the U.S. Senate whicht would expand Shiloh National Military Park, adding several historic sites to its boundaries. The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee on Wednesday approved the Shiloh National Military Park Boundary Adjustment and Parker’s Crossroads Battlefield Designation Act. If the bill becomes law, battlefields at Davis Bridge, Fallen Timbers and Russell House would become part of Shiloh National Military Park, and Parker’s Crossroads would become an affiliated area of the National Park Service. County school board alters candidacy rule BY ZACK STEEN

Former Corinthian Richard Peeples brings his show to the Corinth Library on Wednesday.

A county school employee can now seek public office without notifying school district administration. Alcorn School Board of Education members voted this week to strike the sentence in the district policy which stated that an employee desiring to seek public office shall notify the superintendent in writing of his/her intention. “I just don’t think a school employee who has decided to run for office should be required to inform anyone,” said board president Randy Wilbanks. “I was actually thinking this sentence had already been removed.” Board member Mary Coleman disagreed, saying the sentence should remain in the policy. “It’s a matter of respect, in my opinion,” she said. Coleman was the only board member to vote against the removal of the sentence. In recent months, the board has tackled a few policy issues during each

regular board meeting in preparation for an upcoming districtwide audit by the Mississippi Department of Education. In other news: • Board members accepted the low – and only – bid from Paul Fisher Oil Company received for gasoline and diesel for the 2016-17 school year. • Kossuth High School Principal Travis Smith received the OK from the board to enter into a contract with Ferrell’s Home and Outdoor to purchase a new lawn mower. The mower will be purchased at the state bid contract price of $9,470.23 at interest rate of zero percent for 36 months. • The board approved to grant an easement across district property to the property of Donald and Marjorie Pace near Kossuth Elementary School. The district will use the area to construct a new road which will allow parents easier access to drop-off and pick-up prekindergarten students at the school.

People of the Crossroads Wesley Stricklen, Iuka Photo by Opal Lovelace

Wesley Stricklen is a hit around the Fourth of July in Tishomingo County. The Iuka native and his friends are well known for hosting a large fireworks show at his home. “We all pitched in at the beginning and we would then shoot off the fireworks for a small group of friends and family,” he said. “We then hooked up with a wholesaler and realized we could get much more for the money. The first show was pretty amazing and impressed everyone who saw it. Now it’s an annual event.” The free firework show celebrated its third year this month. “There was so many people here,” added Stricklen, who owns Wes Professional Lawn Enhancement. The 33-year-old and his wife, Amanda, have one son, named Porter. They attend Oakland Baptist Church in Corinth.

also known as the Battle of Hatchie’s Bridge, happened on Oct. 5, 1862, in Hardeman and McNairy County as the Federals drove the Confederates across the Hatchie River. It was the final engagement of the Iuka-Corinth campaign. “The bridge across the Hatchie River has long since washed away and the banks of the river have undergone erosion,” says a National Park Service description, “but the 1,090 acres proposed to be included in the park boundary retain a high degree of integrity with much of the acreage remaining in agricultural cultivation or woodlands.
