Some tough choices are ahead for the Alcorn Board of Supervisors. Supervisors held a work ses-

sion on Thursday as they started to comb through the budget for the new fiscal year. Most of the proposed budgets from county departments and outside agencies have already

been submitted. “We are where we need to be or below on a majority of the budget,” said Chancery Clerk Greg Younger. Supervisors discussed three

areas – regional jail, landfill and 911 – which pose the biggest problems in the budget. “They are the three albatrosses tied around our neck,” added Younger. “The jail was set up

to be paid for by revenue from prisoners and then the revenue was cut.” Younger told the board it Please see SUPERVISORS | 2A

Family, fun and fellowship. It’s what the Alcorn County Fair has always been about. The 6th Annual Alcorn County Fair is gearing up to provide the area with another year of good clean entertainment on Sept. 13-17 at the Crossroads Arena. “We strive to provide an event which is true to our agricultural heritage and assures fun for the whole family,” said fair committee member Zane Elliot. “Several of the activities are a tribute to old country fun.” Since the county fair was brought back in 2011, organizers have averaged 9,000 people. Attendance increased to an all-time high of 10,478 in 2015. “We have been fortunate to see attendance rise and we see it only continuing to grow,” added Elliot. The annual livestock show saw a record crowd last year with 137 head of cattle. “I know at one point we had over 500 people in the barn itself,” said event coordinator Patrick Poindexter. The livestock show is slated for 9 a.m. on Sept. 17.

The popular cheer-off is set for opening night inside the Crossroads Arena. “We are expanding the competition to Lee and Union counties this year,” said Danny Turner with the fair committee. Wednesday and Thursday will be free admission night to the annual event this year. Admission for Tuesday, Friday and Saturday will be $5 each night.
