Nelms resigns, withdraws from election BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

Second District Supervisor Dal Nelms is resigning from office and withdrawing his candidacy for re-election. A letter announcing his withdrawal was delivered to the Alcorn County Democratic Executive Committee and Circuit Clerk’s Office on Friday, and

District Attorney John Weddle announced in a press release that Nelms is resigning effective immediately. The brief letter states, “Please accept this letter as my notice of withdrawal from the supervisor’s race for District 2 of Alcorn County. Thank you sincerely. Dal Nelms.” At this point, the ballot for

the Aug. 4 primary is set and cannot be changed, according to Circuit Clerk Joe Caldwell. Nelms’ name will still appear on the ballot along with the others running for the office. The Board of Supervisors will appoint a person to fill the post until the election winner takes office. Nelms was arrested Thurs-

day and charged with grand larceny after being accused of stealing cash from a money bag at O’Reilly Auto Parts, where he allegedly posed as an employee of the store. He was arrested in December 2014 in the state auditor’s investigation of embezzlement and forgery in a scheme to collect payments from county vendors in ex-

The Corinth-Alcorn County Airport is readying a hangar rehabilitation that could spur some new business. Airport Manager Donna Briggs presented some updates on the facility to the city and county governments this week while seeking formal acceptance of a grant and presenting the FY 2016 budget request to the Alcorn County Board of Supervisors. Both boards gave approval to accept the MDOT Multimodal Transportation Improvement Program Grant for rehabilitation of the airport’s original 1954 hangar, which encompasses 6,500 square feet and has adjoining office space totaling 1,200 square feet. The city and county will each contribute $4,905 for the $245,250 project. Both boards approved accepting the grant, with the city’s approval contingent upon the city attorney’s review of the Please see AIRPORT | 2
