Man facing murder charge

A sacred find

“I see no reason why those kids who have already been going to a different school in a different district should appear on the agenda. I would like to see them removed, so that we have hard facts on the exact number of actual transfers.”

Corinth man searches for POW’s family BY STEVE BEAVERS

A Corinth man found an unusual item while metal detecting over the weekend. Veteran Bobby McDaniel found a POW bracelet about six inches underground while hunting in a yard near the Kimberly-Clark Road. McDaniel wants to see the more than 40-year-old bracelet returned to a family member or friend. The name on the bracelet is Capt. Dennis Wilkinson. The date — which is listed as 5-10-72 under his name — is the day he was reported missing. The bracelets were a nickelplated or copper commemorative bracelet engraved with the name, rank, and loss date of an American serviceman captured or missing during the Vietnam War. McDaniel’s find appears to be a copper one.

Changes are coming for the way student transfers are handled for those wanting to be released from the Alcorn County school system. During a special called Alcorn School District meeting this week, board members discussed each individual student transfer out of the district – a task that has been absent from board meetings for some time. While 12 students were granted release from the district, only four were considered new transfers. The remaining eight students, according to Superintendent Larry B. Mitchell, had “already been going to a different district prior to this year,” yet still apPlease see TRANSFERS | 5A

Those who wore the bracelets vowed to wear until the soldier named on the bracelet, or their remains, were returned to America. The bracelets, created in May of 1970, were sold for $2.50 and $3. Between 1970 and 1976, approximately five million bracelets were distributed. Wilkinson, from West Palm Beach, Fla., was part of the LINEBACKER offensive in the spring of 1972, accord-

Special Agents from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation have obtained an indictment for a Selmer man accused in connection to the homicide of a Shiloh man earlier this year. At the request of 24th District Attorney General Matthew Stowe, TBI Agents began investigating the death of Sidney Layne Burks on May 5, a day after authorities from the Hardin County Sheriff’s Department found the body of the 55-year-old in his Pratt Lane home. During the course of the investigation, agents developed information leading to Terry

ing to the POW Network. The offensive objective was to keep weapons of war out of North Vietnam. On the first strike day, the entire force encountered heavy concentrations of antiaircraft fire and 16 MiGs were seen. Three of the MiGs were downed, but the Air Force lost an air crew. An F4E flown by Capt. Jeffrey L. Harris and Weapons Systems Officer Capt. Dennis E. Wilkinson exploded and crashed. The Air Force believed there was reason to believe the two

Liz Mincey is just trying to stay involved in her son’s school. The substitute teacher and stay-at-home mom rarely misses a meeting of the Alcorn School District Board of Education. “I want to be as involved as possible, rather it’s where I went to school at Alcorn Central or when I moved to the other side of the county at Kossuth – all three schools in this county are equally important,” she said. “I like to know what’s going on for the education of our children.” Married to Dewey for 10 years, the couple have one son, seven-year-old South, who attends Kossuth Elementary School. The family attends Wheeler Grove Baptist Church.

“New technology has been installed in some of the classrooms including 60-inch touch-screen monitors. We are hoping to have campuswide WiFi soon as well.” Pete Seago BHS Principal
