Sales tax holiday back for limited items BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
Last-minute back-to-school shopping comes with a break on sales tax for clothing during Friday and Saturday’s sales tax holiday.
The 7-cents per dollar tax is forgiven on the same items as in past years — clothing and footwear items meant to be worn next to the body and costing less than $100 per item. The sales tax holiday does not apply
to a long list of items including school supplies, backpacks, computers, cleats and other athletic items. Fashionable accessories such as jewelry and handbags are also excluded. The Alliance encourages resi-
dents to look for deals in local shops. “Several locally owned small businesses are having additional sales on top of the taxfree holiday,” said Community Development Director Andrea

A Corinth man died in a single-vehicle vehicle crash Thursday afternoon after his truck went down a highway embankment. Coroner Jay Jones identified the victim as Tyler W. Thomas, 31, of Oakland School Road.
It happened about 1:45 p.m. on Highway 72 near the Alcorn and Tishomingo County line. Thomas was driving westbound in a 2013 GMC Sierra SLT pickup that went off the north side of the highway and down a steep embankment. It hit a tree on the way down and

“This is a wonderful opportunity for us. I’m excited.”
Alcorn Baptist Association
With the humble faith of a mustard seed, residents will gather in prayer on Saturday. Lifting their praises heavenward, all will bow their heads to ask for God’s continued blessings on the children, the faculty and the staff of Alcorn County and Corinth City Schools. Held at each school campus from 9 to 11 a.m., the meeting will mark the Alcorn Baptist Association’s 16th Annual School Prayer Walk. “We invite everyone to come out to the schools to pray for

flipped, coming to rest upside down. The driver was not wearing a seat belt, and he was partially ejected from the vehicle, said Jones. Thomas was the only occupant of the truck. The Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
Kossuth Elementary School may become the first Alcorn County school to offer state-ofthe-art wireless Internet. That according to Alcorn School District Director of Technology Rose Seaborn. “This is a wonderful opportunity for us,” she said. “I’m excited.” Seaborn told school board members this week that KES has been rewarded a $70,400 Digital Interactive Learning Grant from the Mississippi Department of Education Office of Technology. The grant will pay for the installation of WiFi for one school in the district. “We picked Kossuth elementary, because that school was Please see GRANT | 2A
