City schools plan no change in taxes BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
The Corinth School District will request no change to its ad valorem tax levy in the 2015-2016 budget. The millage rate taxed to city residents for schools will continue to be 59.2. The district held a public hearing on its budget on Tuesday, and the board will adopt it in a special meeting next week. State revenue sources are increasing about $590,000 for the district to $14.386 million. “That more than covered the state-mandated increase

BY STEVE BEAVERS Prayer is the answer. The Alcorn Baptist Association is coordinating the 15th Annual School Prayer Walk at each campus in Alcorn County on Saturday from 9-11 a.m. “If we ever need our children and teachers covered in prayer, it’s now,” said association prayer coordinator Kat Chapman. “It only takes one tragic event or person to bring death and destruction to our schools.”
In the last two events, around 300 have attended across the county. “God expects us to take a stand and let people know whose side we are one,” said Chapman. “Our children need to know people are praying for them.” Event coordinators are slated to be at each school campus in both the city and county. “The risks and dangers get higher every year,” said Chapman. “Every day it seems we are losing more and more of
Dear reader: The Daily Corinthian presents its Candidate Questionnaire 2015 inside today’s edition. Many candidates took advantage of this free public service to let voters know more about them, why they seek office, why they are qualified for the office, what they plan to do and where they stand on various issues. Some candidates chose not to participate. Questionnaires were mailed to the addresses submitted to the circuit clerk’s office. When we didn’t receive any response, we made at-

for salaries,” said Finance Director Casey Palmer. Rising student enrollment has helped the district maintain an increase in per-pupil revenues coming from the state. Local taxes make up about 20 percent of the district’s revenue, and 57 percent comes from the state. The district’s largest expense is salaries and benefits, at $16.586 million, or 56 percent. Several staffing recommendations also came before the
tempts to reach candidates via the phone number submitted to the circuit clerk’s office. Any candidate who claimed they did not receive a questionnaire was given a second chance. Even then, several chose not to participate. We just want the reader to know at what length we went to get as much participation as possible. The questionnaire is our attempt to help every voter make an informed decision. Please vote on Aug. 4. Sincerely, Mark Boehler Editor
