The Mississippi Department of Corrections is offering Alcorn County the opportunity to house more state inmates, although the daily reimbursement for the new prisoners will
be at a reduced rate. With the county looking to bolster the finances at the regional correctional facility, it’s an offer the Board of Supervisors welcomed. MDOC will continue to pay the county $29.74 per day per inmate for
the contractual minimum of 240 inmates and will pay $20 per inmate per day for any inmates above the contractual minimum. The board on Monday apPlease see INMATES | 5

As school starts back this week, safety is a top priority. Although summer break for Alcorn County kids doesn’t officially end until Thursday, school began for the K-12 Corinth Warriors across the city on Monday. “We are excited to have each of our students back on all three campuses,” said Corinth School District Marketing Director Taylor Coombs. “We hope that everyone will be patient at all three schools and let everyone work out the logistics of drop off and pick up.” Coombs said teachers and administration will work their

“I heard tires squealing and a crash,” said Alcorn County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Dusty Essary. Essary was at Kossuth Elementary School checking on sprinklers when the accident occurred just before 11 p.m. Essary responded to the scene to find Mitchell trapped inside the truck upside down.
A member of the American Legion accomplished his mission. The widow of a former POW is thrilled he did. When Bobby McDaniel came across a POW bracelet while metal detecting last week near the Kimberly-Clark Road, he was determined to
return the item to a family member or friend. It took only a few days after the story appeared in the Daily Corinthian and shared on Facebook for a connection to be made. The name on the over 40-year-old bracelet was Capt. Dennis Wilkinson. The Please see BRACELET | 2

hardest to make it as easy as possible in the coming days. “Everyone should be extremely observant when driving in the school zones,” she added. “Students are adjusting at each campus to the way things work and we hope everyone will be on the look out for them. Also take extra caution with the school buses and be aware of them loading, unloading and stopping.” The Mississippi Department of Transportation also recently released back-toschool safety tips. When dropping off, don’t park alongside another parked vehicle. Doing so
