Meeting will focus on school funding BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com

One of top advocates for better education in Mississippi is coming to the Crossroads. The Parents’ Campaign will give the featured presenta-

tion during next week’s Alcorn County P16 Parent Advisory Council meeting. Set for Thursday, August 11 at 6 p.m. inside the Biggersville High School gym, a one hour presentation will explain how

schools in the state are funded. The meeting will be open to the public. “It’s a true honor to have this group as our guest,” said P16 chairperson Jodi Fiveash. “Hopefully they can share some

insight into school funding and the legislative process that budgets school funding can be shared with our county.” The Parents’ Campaign was founded Nancy Loome and fellow public school parents

in 2006 as a way to provide all parents information about legislative initiatives concerning their children’s education and to give parents, educators, Please see MEETING | 2A

A native Alcorn Countian is backing the shield. Pastor Barak Stafford came up with the “Friends of Police” movement after talking with a

friend in Searcy, Ark. The uniting movement has now spread to Corinth. “There is a big communication gap in the country,” said Pastor Stafford, who grew up in Jacinto and graduated from

Biggersville High School. “I hope this encourages more awareness to building relationships in our communities.” Stafford was back in Corinth

Zynekkia Nunnally is now set for college. Brothers Making A Difference (BMAD) added the final piece before Nunnally left for Mississippi State University. The group presented the 2016 Corinth High School graduate with a HP Pavilion laptop complete with flash drive, anti-virus software and mouse. “She has always been a positive influence and hard worker,” said BMAD member Lamar Keith. “Zynekkia is on the right track and this will level the playing field for her at college.” Nunnally plans on majoring in Biological Sciences with the goal of becoming a dermatologist. “Everything is technology

The Crossroads Museum already had the lights and camera. It’s the action the museum has been missing. Organizers of the 15th Annual Crossroads Museum Photo Contest have remedied the issue by adding Hometown Teams as a category. “We didn’t really change any categories from last year,” said museum executive director Brandy Steen. “The only thing we added was Hometown Teams.” Organizers did away with two categories last year. The five divisions – Close-ups; People; Pets/Animals/Wildlife; Still Life and Vacations – are back again this year. “Hometown Teams will tie into the Smithsonian Exhibit which will launch on Nov. 19,” added Steen. “The category can include any sports-related photo.” Cost is $10 per entry for the first three entries and $5 for

each entry after that. The Best of Show winner will receive $150. First, second and third place will be awarded in each category. Each first place winner will receive $50. All second place winners get a 2017 entry fee waiver worth $10. All winners will be awarded ribbons. Entries will be displayed during the Alcorn County Fair on Sept. 13-17 and from Sept. 25 through Nov. 12 at the Crossroads Museum. The Hometown Teams photos will be displayed at the museum through Dec. 31. Winners will be announced prior to being displayed. Deadline to enter is Sept. 6 by 4 p.m. “The contest is open to everyone,” said Steen. “Photos which have been previously published are also now eligible.” Photos that have been a previous contest winner are ineligible. Matt Meeks is trying to grow the Alcorn Central Middle School football program. In his third year as head football coach, Meeks is ready for the season to begin. “My goal this year is to win. We’re going to have 50 or 60 kids playing and a real good group of eighth graders returning,” he said. “I love my guys. They are like my sons, and they gained a ton of confidence last year.” One of the coach’s top goals for the year is out scoring his alma mater Kossuth in the home opener on August 23. “I think we have a really good opportunity to beat Kossuth and prove to everyone that Central Middle has a team that can win,” said Meeks. Married to Chasity, the couple have one son, four-year-old Tristan.
