Alcorn school board views attorney’s property findings BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com
The search for titles and deeds on two dormant school properties in Alcorn County is over. It appears the Alcorn School District owns only a portion of land at each of its closed schools in Rienzi and Glen. The findings are part of an extensive report complied by school board attorney Arch Bullard. “The Alcorn School District most likely owns only one tract of land in Rienzi which has road frontage and school buildings, but the second tract with some portion of a building has reverted to the Town of Rienzi,” Bullard told the Board of Education at the Monday meeting. “Alcorn County, not the school district, appears to own a tract of

The second tract at Glendale is most likely owned by the Alcorn School District.” Tract one on the Rienzi Elementary School property is three acres originally deeded from J.R. Henderson in 1920. “Although difficult to tell
from the land records, I assume this three-acre tract of land that fronts the road would contain the main elementary school buildings,” said Bullard. “There is no reverter clause, which would mean the land would be owned by the school district.” Rienzi’s second tract of land, Please see PROPERTY | 2A
Incumbent succeeds in ACE board election BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com
Harrison Childs’ third time wasn’t a charm. The Alcorn County native lost his bid at a seat on the Alcorn County Electric Power Association Board of Directors in its annual election held on Tuesday. Incumbent and long time board member Bobby Roberts took the top spot in the twoperson race. “Turnout was lower than normal,” said ACE Office Manager Eddie Howard. “We would, however, like to thank everyone who took the time to come vote.”
The Alcorn County Sheriff’s Department is issuing a warning to residents following a barrage of scammer complaints. “We received close to 20 phone calls Monday morning from citizens who were contacted by an individual identifying themselves as being from our office,” said Sheriff Ben Caldwell. “I have called the number back myself and a male answers the phone saying he is with the Alcorn County Sheriff’s Office. I asked who was speaking and he identified himself as a lieutenant which was interesting because we don’t have one. “Upon questioning, he even supplied our address,” he continued. “When I advised him that I was Sheriff Ben Caldwell, he hung up on me.”

According to Big gersville High School Ag teacher Ray Nash, agriculture is not just about farming anymore. “Agriculture teaches every aspect of our lives, and I try to teach my students that,” he said. For the last 19 years, he has been an educator at the Alcorn County school. “I’ve enjoyed the relationships with the kids and teaching them something they can use beyond high school – life long skills as part of career and technical education,” said Nash, who has also taken on the role of assistant principal without the title when BHS Principal Pete Seago is off campus. Nash is married to fellow Biggersville teacher Lori. The family has one son, 14-year-old Carson.
Almost 500 members took part in the election, with 408 casting their vote in favor of Roberts. In his third try at a director title, Harrison received 84 votes. Roberts, who has been on the board since 1996, rejoins fellow board members J.B. Darnell, Mark Gardner, Jerry Brawner and Sam Tull. Each board member holds a three-year term. The board is responsible for reviewing the association’s financials each month, along with approving new contracts and reviewing employee policies.
