Preservation commission names chair

“These changes will make it more complicated. It’s now a three-page document.” Arch Bullard Board attorney

BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

The Corinth Historic Preservation Commission named a new chairman and heard a property proposal in a Tuesday session. The commission elected as chairman Robert G. Moore Jr., who was named to the commission by the Board of Aldermen in 2013. He is an attorney in private practice and serves in the elected position of county prosecuting attorney. Moore succeeds Claire Stanley, who will remain on the commission. He has been through the renovation process in the historic district with his law office. Moore holds a bachelor of business administration from Mississippi State University and a juris doctorate from the University of Mississippi School of Law. The commission’s agenda included a proposal for renovation work at 412 East Waldron Street, a commercial property in the preservation district owned by Mark Mills. The commission delayed action on the proposal and asked Mills to submit a more detailed sketch of the plans for the building. Mills proposes to build a pair of unpainted brick columns — one on the left side of the front entry and one on the right side of the front windows to separate the property from the Cottage Garden building. The 12-foot-tall columns would be capped with bent metal or an ornate cap. He also proposes re-bricking Please see COMMISSION | 2

Kossuth High School now has a dash of blue. The Aggies haven’t replaced their school colors of maroon and white. KHS added the blue in support for law enforcement by adding a bow to the top of the school arch. Blue bows started showing up around Alcorn County almost a month ago. The bows are in support of officers following the shooting deaths of law enforcement officers

“They give us a great deal of support and we wanted to do something to show our appreciation for them.” Travis Smith KHS principal in Dallas and Baton Rouge, Louisiana. “The support we have from law enforcement is crucial,” said KHS Principal KHS Travis Smith as the bow was tied to the arch. “They give us a

School board members worked on the district’s student transfer policy again this week, but made no changes. Alcorn School District Board of Education attorney Arch Bullard recently finished up rewriting the district’s student transfer policy, and on Monday night he presented his work to the board. “I reworked the current policy and attempted to make it a little clearer,” said Bullard. “I set out the requirements in steps and took the recommendations from the (P16) advisory council.” The newly introduced changes include a separate policy for pre-kindergarten students, a previously released renewal form to track the number of students residing in but not attending school in the district, the handling of each transfer as a individual item on board meeting agendas and a step-bystep process for students trans-

For more than 35 years, 79-year-old Jackie Grisham worked inside his cousin’s clothing store in downtown Iuka. “I sold a lot of suits and shoes to just about every man in Iuka during those days,” he said. Grisham’s Men’s Clothing Store closed in the 1980s and Jackie soon found himself at another job he fell in love with. “Knowing that, in a family’s time of need, I am able to help in some way is rewarding to me,” he said of his work at Cutshall Funeral Home. Jackie has one daughter, Melissa, and one grandson, Quinton. Jackie’s siblings are James Grisham and the late Hilda Price. His parents were Ernest and Mattie Grisham.
