Tourism tax posts near record month BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

The tourism tax on prepared food and lodging in Corinth posted its second-biggest month to date in the latest reported period. Tourism Director Christy Burns told the Board of Alder-

men this week that the Corinth Area CVB expects the tax to end the fiscal year about 6 percent ahead of the prior year. “On average, we are $6,000 above last year’s monthly average, which translates into about $300,000 in restaurant and ho-

tel sales, so we’re excited about that increase,” she said. Proceeds from the 2 percent special tax returned at midAugust totaled $118,216.57, an increase of about $7,100, or 6.4

Effort helps flood victims BY KIMBERLY SHELTON kshelton@dailycorinthian.com

Paying it forward, local churches, missionaries and volunteers are doing their part to help Louisiana flood victims. After watching the devastation in Baton Rouge and other flood ravaged areas on TV, Sandy Hughes felt compelled to do something about it. “A friend and I were talking

and we thought, ‘This could be us’! We decided it was time to stop sitting at home on the couch and do something about it,” said Hughes. “We came up with the idea of loading up supplies on a truck trailer at Walmart and then we met a group of local missionaries by chance who were planning on doing the same Please see VICTIMS | 5A

‘Cookies with the Queen’ so I thought what better way to invite back the contestants who won while wearing our dresses than to host our first ever ‘Cookies and Crowns” event. “We are also happy to welcome our ‘little miss’ titleholders since we added dresses for them in the past six months,” she said. It was Kim Borden’s mother who first introduced her to the wonderful world of flowers. The owner of Friendly Florist in downtown Iuka, Borden has been working at the shop for 33 years. “I inherited the love of flowers from my mother, who started this business in 1983,” she said. “I love this business. The old saying is true: If a person can do something they love, then they’ll never work a day in their life.” Married to Galelus for 26 years, the couple have two daughters, 18-year-old Madison and 13-year-old Molly. The family attends Mt. Evergreen United Methodist Church in Iuka. They also love to travel. “New York and Disney World are two of our favorite places,” she added.
