Legacy Run
BY BOBBY J. SMITH Corinth has a new venue to showcase live local music. Slated for the first Thursday of each month at Pizza Grocery in downtown Corinth, the Corinth Singer Songwriter Showcase is a new event where area songwriters and performers can perform their best tunes in an intimate environment. Event organizer Joseph Newell said the main objective of the Singer Songwriter Showcase is to promote local musicians. “Original music is rarely showcased in our area, and this is the perfect platform to expose the talent in Northeast Mississippi to each other and potential restaurants or bars

Riders were able to take a afternoon break and enjoy refreshments and fresh watermelon, compliments of the American Legion Post 6 Ladies Auxiliary. Following the placing of two wreaths in front of the post, more than $3,000 was collected for the Legacy Fund, which provides college scholarship funds for the children of disabled veterans and military personnel who lost their lives on active duty on or after 9/11. “The American Legion is so proud of our riders who go out each and every year to raise

More than 400 motorcycles roared through the Crossroads area on Monday as the American Legion Legacy Run made a stop in Corinth. “This is a big deal for all of us – a once-in-a-lifetime event for sure,” said local Post 6 Commander Tommy Watson, who lead the caravan of cycles from Jackson, Tenn. into Corinth on the five-day run. American Legion Riders from across the world left the National Headquarters in Indianapolis on Sunday en route to the national convention in Ohio. The ride will cover parts of Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia. Shortly past 3:30 p.m. on

BY ZACK STEEN Almost all Corinth and Alcorn County third graders are performing at or above grade level. This is according to a recent snapshot of student performance and retention of students released by the Mississippi Department of Education. The results are part of the Literacy-Based Promotion Act which was enacted to improve the reading skills of kindergarten and first through third grade students so every student completing the third grade is able to read at or above grade level. For the 2014-15 school year, 220 Corinth School District third graders completed the reading summative assessment. More than 95 percent of those students passed the assessment on both the initial test and the retest. More than 40 percent of Corinth students also scored in the proficiency levels on the third grade math assessment. “Corinth School District students performed well on the Literacy Based Promotion Act. We had over 95 percent of our students pass the test on the first attempt and close to 100 percent by the last retest,” said Super-

awareness for the needs of veteran’s families,” said National Commander Dale Barnett, who was also in Corinth as part of the ride. “The goal this year is between $1 and $1.5 million in scholarship money raised.” Since 2002, over $11 million has been donated to the scholarship fund, due largely to the efforts of The American Legion Riders who contribute significantly on an annual basis through the annual American Legion Legacy Run. They also support countless other national, state and local programs and charities for veterans, military families and communities. (For more information and to donate, visit legion.org/donate.)
Local governments will take unpaid property taxes to the auction block on Monday. The county tax sale is set for 8:30 a.m. at the courtroom of the Alcorn County Courthouse. The City of Corinth will conduct its sale at 1 p.m. in the board room at City Hall. Tax Collector Larry Ross said it’s important for residents to remember “that we are not selling land. We’re selling tax dollars.” Any properties with taxes not paid by 5 p.m. Friday will go to the sale. “We’ll probably have in the neighborhood of 450 parcels that will be exposed at the tax sale,” said Ross. Corinth City Clerk Vickie Roach expects 350 to 400 city parcels to be in the city’s tax sale. Buyers are looking to pick up the accumulating interest of 1.5 percent monthly in the event that the owner does redeem the property. Owners have a two-year window to settle their taxes, and it is unusual that an owner actually loses a parcel. After the tax sale, owners have to redeem the property through the chancery clerk’s office. Buyers usually pay the amount of taxes due. If there is any bidding over that amount, it is in $25 increments. While the number of parcels headed to the sale is typical for the county, property tax colPlease see TAXES | 2A

For longtime cosmetologist Kim Walker, the best part of the job is making connections. “I love all of my clients, and I love doing their hair,” said Walker. “I love the connection I have with my clients.” She has worked for more than 18 years at the Smar tStyle hair salon in the Corinth Wal-Mart. Walker describes herself as a “people person” who has never met a stranger. She credits her success to her relationship with God. “I owe it all to God. He is the reason I am what I am today,” she said. Her other pillar of support is Stephen, her husband of 16 years. “He’s always stood behind me and supported me in anything I wanted to do.” The couple attends Central Church.

Newell said he and fellow band member Phillip Hutcheson decided to take the initiative in starting an event for Corinth songwriters after playing the Tupelo Singer Songwriter Night on Monday nights. “When we would advertise ourselves for the event, people would ask us why there wasn’t one of these events in Corinth,” Newell said. “We decided from a marketing standpoint to not have the event weekly, but to have it on the first Thursday of every month.
